The road's gettin' rough.

Narrator: To make history.

[Loud bang]
Darrell: Whoa!
- Take it easy.

[Engine whirs, huge bang]
- Oh my God!

[Tires skidding, splashing]
[Loud clanking bang]

Narrator: And the drivers...

- Holy [bleep]!
- [Coughing violently]

Mark: Darrell stop
the [bleep] truck!

Narrator: Are fired up.
Lisa: Mark jumped out!

- Fire! Fire!

Narrator: There's panic
throughout the North.

The melt's descended
on the winter roads

closing virtually every trail.

As the season rushes
to the final 48 hours,

remote communities are
desperate for supplies,

but as routes turn
to mud and slush

there's no way to get
all the loads delivered.

But the Ice Road Truckers
are refusing to go quietly.

[Horn blares]

In northern Ontario...

Art: Well, isn't this great?

Narrator: Art Burke's fightin'
through

one of the only roads
still open.

And it's a torn up mess.

- This was all melted
to hell, eh.

- I don't know how long this
Is gonna be open,

but it's too late now because
I'm already on my way in.

[Metal groans]
And you can't turn around.

Narrator: The village
of Sachigo Lake is counting

on the 20 ton load
of building supplies.

[Loud thud]

[Tires crunching]

- Just tryin' to get as far
as I can before it thaws out.

Narrator: But getting
to the remote community

over the swampy trail
will be a challenge.

[Loud splash, thump]

- I just hope to god
this stays frozen

until I get my arse outta here.

[Water splashing]

Going through a little bit
of rough terrain here.

This is [bleep] ridiculous, eh.

Narrator: There are two paths
to Sachigo Lake:

a marathon 450 mile route with
scattered small crossings,

or a 100 mile short cut,
but with one giant hurdle,

a notorious four mile stretch
across the ice.

[Truck rumbles]

- Don't ever buy a truck off
the ice road, b'y.

[Chuckling]

It might look good,
but inside it's [bleep].

Narrator: Art's elected
to take the shorter trail,

willing to tangle with
the mammoth crossing

to try and make it in fast.

[Loud splash, clattering thuds]

- I've never been
in an earthquake, eh,

but I imagine
it'd be just this:

me shakin' around like
a [bleep] fool.

[Truck rattling]

I forget over the summer
what this is like right.

I should be keepin' notes.

Get it tattooed on my hand
some place: [bleep] no,

and then every time I think
of this I just look at that eh.

[Bleep] no, don't go again.

When Mark calls,
"Ha, ha, [bleep] no!"

[Chains rattling]
[Loud thump]

[Truck rumbles]

Narrator: Ten miles back...

another Polar driver's pushing
towards the same destination.

[Truck rumbles]

- I'm on my way to Sachigo
with a load of lumber.

Narrator: But unlike his
counterpart,

Alex Debogorski's taking
the long route to get there.

[Truck rattles]

Alex: I'm probably looking
at about a 15 hour drive

over the ice road which has
been melting for a week.

Narrator: So the legend will
push plenty of extra hours

over bone crushing terrain.

[Engine rumbles]

Alex: First thoughts
on this road is it's...

[Clattering thumps]

It's smoother running over trees

than it is driving
on the road.

[Truck rumbles loudly]

The speed I'm going

a Sasquatch could just
walk beside the truck

and we could have
a conversation.

"And how are you doing today?"
[Sasquatch-like growling]

"Well, I'm glad you're happy."

[Truck rumbles loudly]

Narrator: Willing endure
the rocky additional miles

to avoid the giant crossing
on the other path,

hoping it's the safest bet
to reach the town.

- It's a very unique season.
It's ridiculously short, um,

it started off too warm
and it's ending up too warm.

[Truck rattling]

So the challenge today is to
get there and actually, uh,

get some stuff to this
community, as well as, uh,

getting there in one piece.

Narrator: With 200 miles ahead
of him...

[Truck rattling]
[Loud thumps]

- Holy mackerel.

Narrator: Over thawing muskeg

that's been pulverized
all season,

the vet will have
his hands full.

- I'm sure it'll get worse.

[Tires squeaking]

Narrator: Back in Winnipeg
at Polar headquarters...

Mark: Hello?

To North Caribou?

Well, we heard that road
closed last week.

Narrator: The end of the season
could present a big opportunity

for boss Mark Kohaykewych.

- If we have your blessing
we will, uh we'll get in there.

And how many loads?

That's a lot of loads
this time of year.

Well, there's no guarantees, but
I'm willing to give it a try.

Let me see whose left here.

I know a lot of guys
have gone home.

Give me 24 hours,
we'll get movin'.

[Sighs]

Just when I thought
the season was over

there's a community in Ontario,
North Caribou,

they've contacted us.

There's still some supplies
that need to get in.

The road's have been closed
for a little while,

but they're gonna reopen it
just for us.

This road's gonna have
a lot of challenges.

It's a rough road.

I got one shot to get
this load in.

[Phone keys beeps]
I'm short a couple drivers
for this convoy...

[Phone ringing]

It can't be just any drivers.

They gotta be top dogs.

Narrator: With everything
on the line for Polar

and a community in need,

Mark's bringing
in the opposition.

[Door shuts]

Years ago...

Darrell: I come up here to haul
these loads

and get as many loads as I can.

Narrator: When Mark employed
Darrell Ward,

the two often butted heads.

- You're done.
The door's right there.

- Right on I'm out the door!

- All right thanks. Yep, bye.
[Phone beeps off]

Stole another load from Polar.
Right on.

Narrator: And after Darrell
started his own business...

[Truck clanks]

- You get the [bleep] off
my truck, I'm leavin'!

[Tires screeches]
Thanks for the load, Mark!

Narrator: They became fierce
opponents.

- Partners.
- Nice.

Narrator: And the battle only
intensified once Darrell

brought aboard Lisa Kelly.
[Hands smack]

Mark: Darrell stole Lisa
from me,

it's certainly not good
for Polar.

I mean it's, it's hurtin' me.

I need some help.

I've got a call from
North Caribou,

they've got some loads
they gotta get in there, um...

I know the season's
pretty much done.

It's a late season run,
the road's gonna be crap.

It's been closed for a while

but we got the Chiefs blessing
to get on it.

I need experienced drivers
on this. I need both of you.

This is the final run
of the year

and there is no guarantee
we'll get in there.

- What do you think Lisa?

- Yeah. I mean, let's get this
stuff into the people
that need it.

- For the community

have to throw the rivalry aside

to benefit the communities.

If there's ever a year
that they have needed us

this is the year.

Narrator: To pull off
the mission of the season,

Darrell and Lisa
will be convoying

with Polar's top dog, Todd Dewey

and the company rookie,
Steph Custance.

Mark: All right, guys,
we got these loads going
to North Caribou.

We've got these building
supplies

that they're in desperate
need for

and, uh, they're counting
on us to bring it in.

Todd: Do we even know what
this road's like?

I know the roads are bad but,

I mean, do we know
or are we just goin' in blind?

- Nobody's been down that road
for a good week.

Um, it's enter
at your own risk.

This is the biggest challenge
I've taken on

in all my years
of business here.

Worst case scenario

is we're leaving stuff
in the bush till next year.

I don't know if we're gonna
be able to pull this off,

but I think with, uh,
the right team here

and the companies comin'
together,

I think we can get this done.

So we got housing materials
that's goin', we got one van

and the rest are gonna be decks.

Uh, Steph I'm gonna
get you on the van.

No time better than now
to learn.

Mark: Lisa and Todd you guys are
gonna be on the decks as well.

I know there's a really bad
hill there so we gotta start

pushin' trucks up
or pullin' trucks up.

We're gonna take the loader.

- Right. That's a good idea.
- Yeah.

Mark: So I think I've got
all the bases covered.

Darrell I'll get you to back up
to the loading dock.

We'll uh, I'll get the loader
on there and, uh,

and you and I'll hit the road.

- You and I'll hit the road?

Mark: You bet, bud. I'm hoppin'
in your truck, Darrell.

We're gonna have one trailer
just dedicated as a support
vehicle.

I'm gonna bring my loader.
I'm gonna operate it

'cause I know we're gonna need
it in sections of this road.

Uh, let's see if we can
just bury the hatchet

and get this done.

Darrell: Mark and I are pretty
stubborn, both of us.

Bull headed, stubborn,

but we're gonna have to throw
that aside to get this job done

for this community.

Let's get it done.

Narrator: The five man convoy
will need to push

over 400 grueling miles
to get to North Caribou

on a road that's already been
shut down for the season.

It's a feat neither company
has ever attempted before.
[Chains clank]

Darrell: You outta be chaining
this [bleep] down.

- Hey, let's not start fighting

before we get out there,
eh buddy?

[Loud bang]

- All right.

This season is absolutely crazy.

I mean, if there's any chance
of failing

on any of these loads
this is the one.

Steph: I've got a great
opportunity now

for me to prove myself.

This is like really
my opportunity to show, like,

"Hey I'm here,
I, I want to do this.

I'm not gonna stop
at any rate."

Let's get goin'! Time to convoy
the [bleep] out of this!

Hammer down, boys!

[Engine rattles]

Todd: [Laughing] I don't know
what's gonna to happen.

When I say epic, I mean epic.

Mark stepped up to the plate.

We're gonna work together
with two companies

to see if we can get
the job done.

- This is gonna get
interesting.

- Yep, let's get out of here

before the weather
gets too warm.

Mark: All right, let's do this.

[Door shuts]

- Well, what do you guys say,
are you ready

to get this convoy
going or what?

- Let's get on the road, boys.
It's time to hit the road.

- Yep, I'm ready, let's go.
[Beeping]

- Just got my truck, papa Todd.
I'm hopin' we're ready.

- Here we go.
It's a big convoy, baby.

- [Bleep] yeah! [Bleep] yeah!

[Horn blares]

Narrator: Deep in Northern
Ontario...

[Trucks rattle and rumble]

Lisa: I would say we're on
the winter road

but this sure doesn't look
like a winter road to me.

I don't think I've ever seen
it this thawed out before.

Narrator: The historic
two company convoy

is bearing down on the melted
trail to North Caribou.

- This is gettin'
to the point now

where it's not even
a road anymore.

[Loud thumps]
- Whoa!

[Truck rattles and groans]

- Holy mackerel.

- First time you've ever been
on one of these roads, huh?

- Ah, they weren't kiddin' when
they said it was closed.

Narrator: The road's so damaged
by the thaw

it's been closed
to all traffic.

- You and I both know how hard

this winter was
on the communities.

- Oh, I know.

Narrator: But with the tiny
village desperate for supplies

it's been open exclusively
for the four truck convoy.

- How's everybody doing back
there? The road's getting rough

and everybody role call in.

- Copy.

Todd: Yeah, we're just tootin'
right along here.

Everybody's keepin'
a nice steady even pace.

- I'm comin' up too.
[Truck rattling]

[Bleep]!

[Truck rumbles]

I'm pumped.
This is my uh, first convoy.

We're going in on
a closed road.

You gotta washed out
mud and tracks.

It's a war zone out here.

[Loud thumping]

- The ice roads have melted all
the way down to like bare dirt.

[Truck rumbles]

We got ourselves one [bleep]
freakin' rough

nasty lookin' muddy ice road.
[Loud boom]

I ain't never seen the roads
like this ever.

- It's gonna be a long ride
in here

on this rough-[bleep] road,
isn't it?

- Yeah.

Narrator: As bad as the
400 mile route is now,

it'll only get worse
as the day wears on.

[Chains clanking]

Mark: It's a pretty big risk
I'm takin' here.

If these temperatures
get any warmer

we're gonna be in real
rough shape.

- Yeah we are.

[Chains clanking]

- Wow.

Steph: Hammer down,
boys and girls, hammer down.

- Get 'er done.

[Metallic clanking]

- This is gonna be a crazy-
[bleep] trip.

Narrator: As the convoy pushes
forward...

200 miles to the North East...

[Truck engine whirs]

[Truck rumbles]

...a legend's in the thick
of it too.

Alex: I've been on a lot
of roads than this one,

but it's sittin' right up there
with the worst.

Narrator: On the trail
to Sachigo Lake

it's been a slow painful ride
for Alex Debogorski.

- Lower back's pretty stiff
and my upper, you know,

my neck is sore from all
the bouncing back and forth.

My arms are sore from hangin'
on to the steering wheel.

Narrator: To avoid an four mile
ice crossing

Alex has taken the long route
to the remote village.

Alex: The challenge of course
is still to get in here

unload my load and get out
before the road uh, gets worse.

Narrator: A road packed
with plenty

of extra muddy and rocky
terrain.

And though he'll avoid
the monster crossing
on the short cut...

- I'm comin' up to
the ice crossing.

Narrator: He'll still have
to tangle

with a mile long stretch of ice.

Alex: I'm a lot nervous
about the ice crossing,

'cause if it's in the same
condition as the road

it's questionable.

This looks like I'm gonna
be sliding on through
the mud here.

Narrator: With conditions
the way they are...

- Holy mackerel! Oh baby.

Narrator: even a short crossing
could prove deadly.

[Engine hums]

- Well, we're on the side
of the lake here.

We're on the-we're almost
on the ice.

There's a bunch of ice here
but it's kinda broken.

Doesn't, doesn't look
really too great.

Almost looks like somebody
went through the ice

and then it froze up
on top of 'em.

[Ice cracking]

I'm gonna put my coat on,
my hat.

If there's any problems
on the ice crossing

you don't want to jump outta
the truck with no clothes on,

'cause you may end up with
no truck, cold and wet.

It definitely doesn't look
very healthy, uh, but,

but what're ya gonna do?

You can't, you can't jump
across it...

and there's some things
I don't have control over.

I have to hand off to God.

[Airbrakes hiss]

[Ice cracking sounds]

[Engine rumbles]

If you have a dry crack
it's not a problem,

they're froze together,
but you have a wet crack

that means the crack
is all the way through

and it's wet and it'll slip.

is splintering everywhere.

can barely withstand
the pressure

from Alex's 10 ton haul.

crossing's within sight.

it's also where the ice shrinks

to its thinnest level.

Narrator: Alex may be grateful,

but with over 150 grueling
miles to go

he's far from home free.

- Might take forever to get
there because it's so rough.

Narrators: While Alex

200 miles to the South

the unprecedented
two company convoy

is fightin' the thawing road
to North Caribou.

- How's everybody doin'
back there?

- I'm rollin'.

- I'm rollin'.

- Yep, ten-four, I'm right here.

Narrator: The 400 mile path
is a mine field of rocks,

divots and mud,

but for the five person team
failure's not an option.

[Loud thumping]

- Oh, there's a hole there.

[Loud thumping]
Whoa, whoa.

[Metallic groaning, creaking]

Watch the rocks.

[Metallic groaning, rattling]

Slow her down on the rocks
here kids.

We don't want to bust
any tires.

[Loud clanking]

- I think the biggest concern
isn't, uh,

falling through holes
at the moment,

it's trying not to pop
our tires on rocks.

[Loud rattling]

Narrator: For the veterans
managing the terrain

is taking every ounce of skill
they've got.

[Trucks rumble]

Narrator: And for the rookie...

- I'm trying to make sure
I'm careful

and watching where I go.

Narrator: Is trying to prove
she can run with the big boys.

- [Bleep] hairy, yeah,
and I'm trying to do my best.

I'm just tryin' to be careful,
make sure I watch my mirror.

[Rattling thumps]

Do the best I can to make sure

my trailer is followin'
properly.

I can blow a tire and then
we're gonna be here

for a hell of a lot longer.

[Engine roars]

[Loud thump]

snow splattering]

Narrator: On the rocky road
to North Caribou...

Todd: Holy smokes!

[Engine idling]

- [Bleep] ah.
[Engine turns off]

[Bleep] man.

[Engine starts up]

Narrator: The harsh trail
proved too much

for rookie Steph Custance.

And now towards the back
of the convoy...

[Tires skid]

she's stuck in the ditch.

- Ah, hey Todd?

Todd: What's goin' on there,
Steph?

Narrator: Up ahead...

- Ah!

Narrator: Word of Steph's
misfortune

is reachin' the front
of the pack.

Todd: Okay. I'm just comin'
around the corner.

Steph's got herself stuck
in a hole.

- Well, that's all on Todd.

I guess that's why he's
at the tail end of this.

- We don't have to go
back there.

- He can pick up the pieces
I guess.

I'm too far ahead.

- Todd you got that for Steph?
You're lookin' after that?

Todd: I'm gonna see if I can't
get a rope on her here

and give her a little tug back.

- He'll get her out.

- I didn't want to have
to do this run

with the rookie driver there,
but I don't know,

she's gotta learn sometime.

Narrator: With the road
deteriorating by the hour...

- Oh [bleep].

Narrator: Todd'll have
to act fast.

- Just what I didn't want,
stop the convoy.

Narrat: Or Steph and the
top dog could find themselves

separated from the convoy.

- Yeah, I was tryin' to watch
these pot holes

and all these [bleep] rocks
here,

I was lookin' in my mirror

and lo and behold
I drive off into it.

Tood: It's all right it happens.

Just be on the radio.
As soon as I tell you

just put it in reverse.

- Okay.
- Just let 'em start turnin'
backwards

and I'll just give her a good
tug. She should come right out.

- Okay.
[Chains clank]

- It's always somethin' up
here, man, always somethin'.

[Door shuts]

Steph: Yeah, I'm ready.

- Okay, here we go.

[Engine grinds, loud clank]

[Tires grinding]

Steph: I'm good I should be
able to get out from here.

[Airbrakes hiss]

- It's all it takes sometimes
is a good little tug

on somethin' to get somebody
out real quick.

Could have been a hell
of a lot worse than that.

Narrator: Todd's got the
22-year-old outta the ditch.

- Thanks papa Todd!
- [Chuckles]

Todd: Oh, no problem.

Narrator: And the back half
of the convoy

hustles back onto the road.

- Let's get goin'.
[Door shuts]

Narrator: But with 200 miles
of disastrous road conditions
to go...

Mark: Everybody moving?

- Steph is out and rollin'.

Narrator: The miracle mission
is far from over.

- Hammer down!

Narrator: 150 miles
to the North

on the trail to Sachigo Lake.

[Water splashing loudly]

- So far this season this
is the worst [bleep] kicking

the truck got yet eh.

Narrator: Art Burke's
on his own.

[Loud rattling]

- I got to beat the clock
here eh.

That's the clock shinin' there.

If I don't beat that

Narrator: Even in the best
of circumstances

this road is one of the most
challenging in all of Ontario.

- The road is all full of mud,
big ruts in it eh.

Narrator: But as the warming
weather continues its assault...

It's an all out battle
just to keep moving.

the wild card chose
to take the shortcut,

the good news, he's finally
entering the home stretch.

- We're gonna go out on a limb
here pretty [bleep] soon,

'cause we're gettin' close
to this lake.

Narrator: The bad news,
he's about to face off

with one of the biggest
crossings in Ontario.

- This is the ice crossin'
that I [bleep] went through

last year I think.

It's crackin' when I'm walkin'

maker on the same crossing.
