- It's complicated. That's what people say when they think you can't handle

what they're talking about. Like geometry. Or world peace.

Or relationships. But doesn't that just teach us

that things that are complicated are scary and bad?

Can't complicated just be complicated?

Or even better, can't we find a way to simplify?

And then I perform my special bicentennial song,

which I still have to finish writing... with Tyler and Piper

on backup vocals. - And I get my minions

to pull down the tarp, make a short speech, reveal our barn quilt and say:

"That's all, folks. Hope you enjoyed it, because none of you will be around

for the tricentennial." - Nice job, ladies.

Although, I think you could lighten up the end.

This event's getting a lot of buzz. Local businesses

have sold all their tickets and we're on track to make over 25 grand.

- Oh! That's a lotta Hamiltons. - How do you plan on spending the money?

- A robot. A monkey. A robot monkey.

- I've got a committee working on ideas. Now, say goodbye to your friends.

You've got homework. - Ladies, I bid you farewell. - Hey.

Has Tyler ever said anything about me?

I think he was sending out vibes.

Oh no. Do you have a crush on him?

- Me. Have a crush on Tyler Flaherty? - He's cute.

- Sure, if you're into classic good looks with a touch of roguish charm.

- He's the only guy in town who cares about something other

than sports, video games, or jokes about bodily functions.

- Wait. Do YOU have a crush on Tyler Flaherty?!

- More like a crushlet. But if you swear you don't like him,

I'm gonna start sending vibes back and we'll see what happens.

- I... I don't. - Great.

Now that we're friends, I'd never want a boy to get between us.

- Stop wiggling! - I'm not wiggling.

- Oh, you are definitely going to make an impression on stage in this.

Look at you. Cute as a doll.

- I don't wanna look cute!

- And I don't wanna be a stone cold fox, but facts are facts.

Who put those bees in your bonnet?

Is it Amy? Your dad said you two still haven't worked things out.

- Well, there's that and... - You still haven't finished your song for the bicentennial?

- And that... Plus...

Piper wants to start sending Tyler vibes.

- And this is a problem because?

- We're too young, obviously. - Obviously.

- It is NOT a crush. I just don't want Piper to start liking Tyler,

and Tyler to like her back, because the thought of them getting together

makes me want to-- - Toss your cookies? - Yes.

- Sounds like a crush to me. - It's all Tyler's fault.

Last night, I was feeling particularly vulnerable,

and, well, he called me... "amazing".

- Jerk. - I know.

What should I do? - First, you have to figure out what you want.

- I want to go back in time and erase the last 24 hours. - Until time travel exists,

maybe talk to Piper? - Right. OK.

Yeah.

- Maybe you wanna change first. - Good idea.

Thank you.

Hey, so remember how I said I didn't have feelings for Tyler Flaherty?

Of course you do, it was like three hours ago.

Anyway, well, surprise!

Oh, hi.

- Piper can't talk right now.

- Stand down, Abbasi.

I don't care if Holly knows. My mom and I are moving to Des Moines.

- But... I thought you loved it here. - I do.

But my mom can't find work,

and if we can't find $500 for rent, we're gonna get kicked out of our house.

- I'm so sorry.

I wish there was something I could do.

- OK, new subject.

You said you needed to talk? Something about the bicentennial?

- Yeah, I just...

I agree with the mayor. I think we should change the last line.

We may not want to call out humanity's fragile existence. Who knows,

maybe we'll even find a way to reverse global warming before the ocean rises

and obliterates most of the country.

OK.

Oh, nice costume.

And Grandma said time travel wasn't possible.

- Hey, Holly. Just practising for the showcase.

Your old man's still got it, huh?

- As long as you don't want me to define what "it" is, yes.

You have still got it. - Hm. What's up, sweetheart?

- So, I wanted to ask you if I could get

an advance on my allowance, and I know it's going to seem

like a lot but-- - Yeah, how much?

- $500.

- Did someone kidnap your horse? - No.

- Then how could you need so much money?

- Look, I can't tell you,

but I promise I'd never ask if it wasn't important.

- Well, times are tough,

but there's a fifty underneath the cookie jar.

I know it doesn't get you close to your goal, but... - It's still a start.

Thank you, Dad.

- I think we need more glue.

- So you just gave Holly $50? - Don't you trust our kids?

- Yes. To run away to Chicago, drive underage and get engaged. I mean, for all we know--

- How long have they been at it? They sound just like my parents did

right before they...

- My parents are not... They're in love.

- When was the last time you saw them do something romantic together?

- I don't keep track of that stuff. - So you don't remember.

And would you say they have common interests? - Not really.

Besides, everyone knows opposites attract. - Actually, that's a myth.

Relationships that aren't based on common interests and values

do not work.

- Where are you getting this junk from?

"Are my parents getting divorced? A comprehensive checklist."

- Check four or more and your parents are headed to Splitsville. But don't worry.

Divorce is no biggie. When my parents called it quits, I got tons of cool crap.

- I can only check three. So there. - Ooh!

You know? Cornstarch might help. I think there's some in the pantry.

- Before you go, Mrs. Hobbie, is that a new shade of lipstick?

- Yes, it is. It's Mango Tango. Just thought I'd switch it up.

- Roger that. - Since when do you notice my mom's makeup?

- "Have you noticed a change in your parent's appearance?"

And then there were four.

- These boots are definitely not made for walking.

- You know, you could really use an extra hand around here.

Piper's mom's looking for some work.

- She came by, she was really nice; it's not in the budget.

Your open mics really help to keep the doors open, but we're still scraping by.

- Still waiting on those refills.

- You rest those tootsies.

- So it's unanimous? We spend the money on planters for Main Street?

Great. I'll get my landscape artist to write up a quote.

Any questions? - How are you going to spend the rest of the money?

We raised over $25,000.

You can't possibly be spending it all on planters.

- We also need flowers. Not mums, though.

Too generic. Oh! Verbena!

- Don't you think there might be a better use for the money?

- Uh, who doesn't love flowers? - I know, but-- - Holly,

with the bicentennial tomorrow, we have quite a bit to do, here.

Did you finish your song yet? - Well, no, but it's almost--

- Better get to it.

- UGH!

Oh, hi.

Do you need something? - Yeah, my mom forgot her phone.

- Great. I mean,

not great that she left it, but great that you're here with it.

You're a very responsible son.

What are you doing?

- Trying to get inside.

- Yeah, of course you are. What?

- Oh, young love! (barking) - No!

- Martha Wainwright!

Is the mayor inside? I have to drop this money off for the bicentennial committee.

(barking) Shush! Not again!

Would you take this money inside?

- Yeah, of course. - Shh, shh!

- "Dear Ms. Parish,

"please find the enclosed salary owed to you

"for your final week at the pickle factory.

Sincerely, Katherine Hobbie."

- I love parades! But not as much as I love you. - I think I'm gonna be sick.

- Who's that guy talking to your mom? - That's Luke Floyd.

He went to high school with Mom and Dad. I think he's some bigwig for the government now.

- They look very, uh, friendly. - Stop.

You heard Robbie, they just went to high school together. - But I think they used to date.

- Hey, Chase!

(imitating a guitar riff)
