we'd pedal to the Snappy Snaps,

print out some photos, and then come

And then this is where we used to live,

Not been down here
for probably at least five years.

It is weird, but it's, you know,
my mom and dad aren't together anymore,

this was when they were happy.

ERT are doing Formula E

They don't have the same backing
as some of the other big manufacturers.

the car doesn't have the same efficiency

that the others do.

We all have the same batteries,
and our powertrain uses

the battery less efficiently than others.
So, yeah, we're the worst on the grid.

We're a small team,
and we've been struggling

for the last couple of years.

I struggle with motivation, to be honest.

It's stupid.
Someone needs to fucking change it.

Sérgio, how much would you have to be paid
to walk around in that now?

I would go with just the right--
It wouldn’t help me with anything.

They are great friends,

the fastest teammate I've ever had.

He'll say he thinks he's better than me,
and I say I think I'm better than him.

I think we agree on a lot,

and we've learned to deal
with the sort of difficulties

of being in the team at the moment,

for the first ever E-Prix.

It's a narrow,
twisty circuit, and it could cause drama.

The sun is shining.
The fans are out in force.

There is a hugely exciting atmosphere,
both down on the grid

and in the grandstands as well.

An amazing qualifying
for Sérgio Sette Câmara in the ERT.

Tokyo's on city streets.

It looks like there's quite a few dips
and weaves and bumps,

so it's gonna be pretty tight,
pretty hard to overtake.

Might end up with a few nice cameos
of people who aren't expected

to be at the front,
and they're able to hold at the front

and be a bit of a cork in the bottle
and get a result.

Others will try to pass,
and we'll just have to put the elbows out

and try to defend.

And, of course, the guy behind us
is not happy, but…

and multiple E-Prix winner

will be looking to get some points
on the board.

So I’ve started this season,
the first two rounds. This is it now.

This is the time to go winning together.

I want to be the driver
to bring Porsche their first championship.

António Félix da Costa

is probably one of the most universally
liked drivers,

always with a smile on his face.

Almost always.
Not early this season, he wasn't.

Da Costa down there
in 16th place.

What on earth has happened
to António Félix da Costa's season?

It has not been one to remember so far.

I've seldom seen a driver
more confused by a downturn in form.

António had a really tricky
and difficult start in the season.

Three races without any point.

I think it was a big disappointment
for him, but also for us.

Porsche, you know,
they're very analytical, strategic.

They're very driven by what's being talked
about at the board level.

There's a lot of pressure to deliver.
You've got to get the results either way.

We are here to fight for wins.
We want to fight for titles.

The target is that we want to fight
for the championship until the last event.

When you work with Germans,
you don't get a lot out of them,

you know, and they're very cold,
brutally honest.

And Florian is attracted to performance.
He's attracted to winning.

With Porsche, it's very simple.
You have to win.

I'm racing for a German manufacturer,
and my teammate,

Pascal Wehrlein, is German.

We are very different culturally,
and I would say he's closer

to the brand than what I am.
I don't speak German, for starters.

Pascal is probably one of the fastest
ever teammates that I've had.

He's been really hard to beat.

Right now, da Costa’s 15th
in the Championship table,

and Wehrlein is second.

My teammate is winning a lot,
so questions start to come.

There's a lot of pressure.
Their expectations are very high.

If you don't perform,
they will be looking elsewhere

for someone who can deliver.

You're getting him. Good luck.

Formula E, anything could happen.

All ready for the five red lights.
Who is going to be big in Japan?

One of the best feelings
in the world is two, three minutes

before the lights go out.

The mechanics have left,
the car is switched on.

It's just you and the car in that moment.

You see every driver around you, you know,
that's it, that's now, it's time to go.

That tension, that nervousness,
that anxiety, all of that, it's like,

"Am I going to make it through
the first corner?"

"Will someone hit me? Will I hit someone?
Will I gain a place? Will I lose a place?"

All of those million thoughts are coming
into your mind, and I love that.

I just love that feeling.

Lights out, we’re racing in Tokyo.

Sérgio Sette Câmara there,
an amazing qualifying

for him inside the ERT.

Dan Ticktum, Sacha Fenestraz,
Sébastien Buemi, all down the lower end

of the field.

It’s so tight as they concertina up.

And da Costa involved in the action there
as well in the second of the Porsches.

How can I go forwards here?
I have to take some risks.

It's a very, very tight kink
in the tightest corner of the whole track.

And I'm trying to surprise people.

Do it, do it, do it, do it.

Da Costa there

into turn one, gets it done clean.
Clinical and decisive there.

Good job, good job.

Seems like he's beginning
to find his rhythm.

Sitting in seventh place,
it's all concertina-ing up

as they're sort of bumping
into one another.

When I tried to overtake Sette Câmara,

he really pushed me in the wall.

In this moment, I'm like,
"Okay, let's come back swinging."

I've been there before.
I love the struggle.

Da Costa has merged ahead
of Sette Câmara,

so the two Porsches there working
absolutely brilliantly together.

That’s pushed Mitch Evans
into the wall at turn nine.

Disaster for Jaguar here in Tokyo,
their 100th race.

And unfortunately,
we say "Sayonara" to the Kiwi.

Mitch Evans,
I'm afraid, is out of this race.

We're halfway through
the race and Dan Ticktum

looks like he's struggling.

I like people knowing
what the fuck's going on.

You know, like, I don't…

Like, if I'm going backwards in a race
and generally not having the efficiency

to go forward it's very frustrating
and enough to make anyone frustrated.

I think Dan Ticktum's big problem
is he's struggled to manage

his adrenaline in races.

When it's mixed with pressure,
I think adrenaline can be quite dangerous.

I created a reputation
for myself very early on.

He had an incident in his early career.

He was at Silverstone racing
against a competitor.

It was my first year
of car racing, Formula 4.

It was 2015, I believe.
I was 15 years old.

If I won Formula 4,
I would have a paid drive

in Formula 3 the next year.

And at that point,
this is where money starts

to become so enormous
that my dad told me

that he basically couldn't afford it,
so I need to get that sponsorship.

Effectively, he caught up
under a safety car

and rammed
the said competitor off the track.

It's just a lot of emotion,
you know, a lot of red mist,

and I just got to him
and just put him on the grass.

Yeah, I hit him on purpose,
and I got banned.

I had to face a tribunal
as a 15-year-old boy,

pleading basically on my knees
to not ban me for life,

because that was on the cards.

There are certain things
that are kind of borderline

unforgivable in racing,

and one of them is properly putting
marshals in danger.

He suffered the consequences of it.
He got banned for two years.

A lot of people
don't understand what it's like

to have the level of adrenaline,
to have this level of passion.

They just don't get it.

Da Costa needs to turn
his fortunes around here

and get himself onto the podium.

I need to be one of the guys up front.

When you're not in that position,
you have to work to come back.

It's all kicking off here, isn't it?

You've got da Costa in third place,
Dennis in fourth position.

Da Costa, sniffing a chance of victory
for the first time since,

what, Cape Town last year it'll be,
won't it?

He seems to have really found
another gear, if you'll pardon the pun.

I'm putting myself
in a tricky situation by going around

the outside of these aggressive guys.

He’s going to take over third place.
So, from attacking to defending,

to losing places there,
for António Félix da Costa.

A mistake can be done,
but not a second time.

We lose positions with Porsche,
it’s unbelievable.

It's going to be
absolutely critical to the chequered flag.

Jake Dennis takes third place,
but António Félix da Costa

just misses out on a podium with fourth,

and his Porsche teammate
Pascal Wehrlein in fifth.

Every human being
will hate owning a mistake.

It's normal. I don't like it. I hate it.

And I know that there are voices
in the team saying,

"One more race like this and he's out."
"He will not finish the season."

It's just unfair driving
from some of these guys.

And we lost the podium.

Damn it!

From outside, to be honest…

If I don't brake, I'm in the wall.

From outside, it doesn't really look
like that. We'll see.

A little bit disappointed with that.
I hope they look into it, because…

if we open a precedent for this,
then, yeah, it is what it is.

that Nico Müller tested for Porsche,

which would suggest
that they are evaluating

a change in their lineup.

Speculatively, they are possibly looking
to replace António Félix da Costa

at the team next season.
So a bit of a bombshell, to say the least.

Rumors start to go around
of how in danger my seat is.

I might get fired imminently.

They're putting a direct competitor
in my car, so…

the alarm is going off, right?

You know, it's quite obvious
that there's one side of the garage

struggling and one side of the garage
not struggling.

So if on the eventuality
of changing someone,

it's obvious at the moment
who that would be,

obviously my side of the garage.

I'm not stupid. I can see what's going on.

So I'm having to cope with the bad stuff,
but also with a lot of other stuff

that is just occupying my brain

with bad words,
bad scenarios, bad situations,

not happy thoughts, you know?

I should be having the most fun
and proudness of my…

Ever career, and I'm not.

Like, what's wrong?
Like, what are we doing wrong, you know?

I mean, I'm living my dream at the moment,
racing for the best brand in the world.

I need everybody to be on board,
the same plans.

But obviously, that comes with results.
So I mean, it's a snowball.

The only way as a driver you get a team
behind you is if you perform.

So there are no miracles in the world.

So yeah, we need to perform
and get the team behind. That's it. Easy.

Fuck, why am I hitting the ground so much?

There's a fissure, a fracture
within the da Costa

and Porsche relationship at a high level.

He's one of the stars of Formula E,
and there he is with a team

that doesn't appear
to be fully behind him.

How are you gonna get out of this?

I think some of people's judgments
of me are fair and some aren't.

You know, people just jump
on a bandwagon, and, you know,

unfortunately, that hasn't helped.

But it's deserved at the end of the day,
because I did the thing.

Hit him on purpose, and I got banned.

A lot of pressure, stupid kid,
you know, whatever.

Look, there's Dan in his school uniform.

I have got a lovely shot
of all of you in your uniform.

There’s me, I’ve got a little mohawk
going on, a little purple shirt.

Absolute swag, mate.
I thought I was the shit. Look at me.

It was a difficult one,
because I'd served my punishment.

But obviously, as a consequence of that,

my punishment wasn't over
at the end of that year.

It was the reputation
I'd created for myself.

And unfortunately, even to this day,

like, it's still just a vast hate train
of people that just,

you know,
slate me at the earliest opportunity.

They don't know me.

It was the most horrific experience.

And it's a shame
that people hold onto things like that.

Because when you're 13, 14,
and you're under that much pressure…

and you don't really understand
at that age, I think, you know,

I understand how the emotion
got the better of him, and…

you know, I'm okay with that.

Not necessarily what he did,
but I understand it.

Because I know the real Dan.

And this is where I start
to get emotional. Sorry. I…

But I do. And I think
he gets a really hard time of it.

He'd do anything for me or his brothers.
He would, and--

But he does wear his heart on his sleeve.

So there's some good things about that
and there's some bad things about that.

But anyway, he's doing all right.

The medieval town of Misano,

on the Adriatic coast,
has been the home

of one of Italy's main racetracks
since the '70s.

Now, it’s being brought
into the 21st century

as it’s going electric.

Here we are in Misano, round five or six,
round six of the season.

I think, you know, in the race,
it's gonna be mayhem.

I think it's gonna be a,
yeah free-for-all out there.

I've been here before,
so that obviously helps a bit.

But I mean, I've not been here
for six years, so…

it's kind of like coming back here again.
Some of the curves are different.

So, apex of turn two,
you will not be able to cut,

and you won't be able to cut this either.

Why can't we just go out here?

I'm not walking the whole pitlane,
I’m not doing it.

I freaking knew it.

Nobody disputes
that Dan Ticktum isn’t quick,

and he’s evidenced
that in everything he’s done.

I can't say too much at the moment.

Let's say, I mean,
I've not had loads of people,

but people will start talking about
next season now around this sort of time.

You know, a few teams
know my contract's up,

so I might get more interest this year.

Everyone loves a bad boy.

But if you're a brand,
if you're a manufacturer,

do you want the risk of Dan?

That's the real question.

Dan's challenge
is to shake this reputation.

You know, he is a crasher
and he bumps into people

and all this sort of stuff.
His real challenge this year

is to try and create this clean slate
where people go,

"Oh, actually, he is a driver
we should be looking at

with a top team for the future."

If I'm gonna leave here, I will,
it'll be to go to a top team, you know?

Porsche, I know da Costa
hasn't been performing

as well as I know he can, so…

I don't know what his contract
situation is, if I'm honest, but…

Yeah, that would be nice.

I feel like he just doesn't take it
that seriously sometimes,

which is why, like, none of the other car,

like, brands or manufacturers
would touch him,

because he's too much of a risk.

He's still a bit of a liability.

We should talk about
António Félix da Costa.

There's a few rumors sort of bubbling
under the surface here

this weekend that his relationship
with Porsche has become strained,

- should we say, "You're so diplomatic."
- Yeah.

Strained? I heard broken.

We're gonna have a bit of an exclusive
interview now with Team Principal

Florian Modlinger to find out
a little bit more.

Florian, thanks for talking to us.
Could you first of all just explain to us,

it is pretty unusual to do
an in-season test

with a driver from a different team,
isn't it?

I don't know if it's common or unusual.
Everybody can build his own opinion.

Testing other drivers
is a standard process

because we look for spare drivers,
we look for rookies.

We do this in regular time frames
in private testing.

And how is the relationship between you
and António Félix da Costa at the moment?

I think for my side,
no difference than before.

The problem is, I'm the idiot.

I am the guy that, "Okay, he's done.
They're trying to get rid of him."

So, I get questioned.
I get the same question 50 times.

Are you worried about your future?

Zero.

- No?
- Not at all.

Yeah. Yeah, sure. I mean, yeah.

Do you see yourself
with Porsche next year?

Yeah, I can, yeah. Sure.

We are in Misano
for the very first time.

We're very much looking forward
to qualifying here.

I thought,
I was never gonna need a manager again

when I signed up with Porsche.

The truth is, things change.

I'm not saying I wanna go.
I don't want to go.

I've been told before in my life,
like, never, ever make a decision

when you're very happy
or when you're very angry.

So, this is going to be a huge session
for António Félix da Costa.

He knows that all eyes are on him.

We're trying to do a preparation to

build a fast race car
and try and go win a race,

and it's just white noise.

And everyone, it's not just the media,

it's just everyone coming,
putting a hand…

a hand around my shoulder,
what happened, this and that.

I can't say too much.
But I also don't want to be a victim.

I don't know, it's just too much going on.

We're keen to see how they're gonna
get on over the course of this session.

There are track limits
and then there's the grass.

Doesn't look like
that cost him too much time though,

but bringing a little bit of dust
as he goes beyond the blue and white curb.

Push. Push, push, push.

Compared to his teammate at the moment,

reasonably big gaps actually,
of nearly half a second,

which is slightly surprising.

So, not an ideal final run
there for António Félix da Costa.

He'll be disappointed with that,
to not make it through.

Last sector, he lost three-tenths to
Pascal. Three fucking tenths.

Likewise,
Porsche will be, as we said,

weakened where he's under
a fair bit of pressure.

On a personal ego side of things,

I'm disappointed after qualifying, 100%.

I'm really trying for it not to get to me.
It's just… It's just…

white noise.

Well, 22 drivers

in the ABT CUPRA and the ERT,

in 16th and 15th respectively.

The most comfortable place
for me to be is when my helmet is on

and I'm on my race car.

That is the most comfortable place
in Misano for me to be in.

Who is going to be
the master of Misano?

Da Costa starting 14th,
11 places behind teammate Pascal Wehrlein.

He’s on the backfoot, and he’s fighting
for his teammate against the odds here.

As you come
onto the exit of turn seven,

look at how many cars
we've got side by side there.

You’ve got Pascal Wehrlein
going side-by-side,

and also António Félix da Costa
looking for a lunge on the outside

into turn eight and nine.

A lunge is like, when you're
quite far from the car in front and you…

you dive super late. Like, that's a lunge.

I do love a lunge.

Your moves need to be assertive.
You can't try an overtake.

You need to go for an overtake.
You need to do it.

That is an absolute
disaster for Pascal Wehrlein.

I see in my mirror

that Pascal has a crash
and he breaks his wing.

So, he's out. He's out of the race.

And in that moment, my mindset shifts.

António Félix da Costa,
who has now gone

from almost playing rear gunner
effectively in this race,

to now leading Porsche's challenge
by some twist of fate.

Da Costa up into second,
Bird’s just dropping back here now,

slotting himself in behind.

Oh, look at that.

Günther pulled a wheelie.

I need to win this race.

You will never win a race
if you don't tell yourself that.

And what a turnout
for the books this would be

if da Costa gets himself
onto the podium in a race where

he’s been talked about
pretty much all week in the press.

has made a fantastic amount of progress

through the field.

as we head into the final sector
in the Tag Heuer Porsche,

through into turn 12, and unless
da Costa makes a mistake,

unless Rowland can try
and invent something and maybe

go for a last gasp lunge
at the final corner,

I think this is gonna go the way
of the Portuguese driver.

an amazing performance by the ERT driver.

in Formula E. Absolutely huge for them.

I've got a lot of pressure.

I don't know if I'm gonna be here

I think I’ve got a 80% chance
of being here, maybe even a bit more, but,

you know, there’s always a chance,
it’s not a 100%, there’s no doubt.

what the hell happened

to António Félix da Costa.

He’d been the main talking point
ahead of the race

with whatever was going on
between him and the Porsche team,

and then produces
this barnstorming drive

with chaos all around him to win,

and I wake up the next morning
and he's been disqualified.

It’s like, what the hell?

Yeah, man, fuck.

It's a thing that involves a catalog

and a very insignificant component
called a throttle-damper spring.

Yeah, so maybe like an hour
and a half, two hours after the race,

I got informed by my team that we lost
the win, zero points.

Yeah. All that fight for nothing, but…

yeah, fuck, yeah, whatever.

I don’t… I haven’t been disqualified
many times in my life.

Yeah, it is what it is.
It's one of the worst feelings, man.

I just felt like I've punched
this black hole,

and it's just not
meant to be at this point.

of the weekend in Misano.

Yesterday, we saw drama with António
Félix da Costa taking the chequered flag,

but latterly being disqualified
some five-hours

following the conclusion of the race.

So, Karun, can you just explain to us,

what is the difference between this spring
and this spring?

Well, apart from being one gray, one red.

That spring had no performance advantage
whatsoever,

but ultimately, it’s in the rules.

When we’re driving, I think
‘cause we’re so in the heat of the moment

you think everything’s against you
and you think the whole world

is caving around you, and it feels
like what you’re driving is really bad.
