With Jake, honestly,
feel like straightaway,

everything has
been pretty, like, straightforward,

and we've been pushing
in the same direction.

It will be definitely a…
a really good experience

to have Jake as a teammate.

He's a really fast driver.
He's a really humble guy as well.

He's been champion last year,
so it could be easy in this situation,

like, being a bit more arrogant.
It hasn't been the case at all with him.

[Nicki] The garage is divided in two.

They each have their own
chief engineer, mechanic.

You are potentially quite separate,

but obviously you are there
for the good of the team.

We did pretty well
in that last one back in London.

Formula E World Championship,
in Mexico City.

Forty thousand fans all in place
for this race here this afternoon.

This is gonna be hugely exciting.

When you are defending World Champion,
history's on the line.

Not many people can say,
"I've defended a world title,"

and Jake knows that.

[reporter] Before the start of your races,

you don't have people
with microphones in your face.

- You don't have all this noise.
- No, for me, I would enjoy this, actually,

because it… it helps
to keep your mind off the race.

That's how I am.
I… I never want to focus on the race.

I want to just keep my mind off it,
relax, talk, just hang out.

And then when it's time to go,

then I can take a deep breath,
and then you can focus.

[Radzi] There are 22 drivers
representing 11 teams.

So, you have two drivers per team.

[Karun] I think, if you look
at the racing drivers,

you get a whole range of people,
and that's what makes it interesting.

You've got some who are cool,
calm, and calculated.

You've got some who are fiery
and passionate and get angry.

And you've got the ones in between.
But I think, ultimately, at the core,

every racing driver is just
a horrendously competitive person

who hates to lose.

Um, difficult race from 14th,
but we got some points.

But ultimately, it was a pretty rough day.

[Karun] Jake put together
a fantastic season last year,

but winning back-to-back championships
in Formula E, I think, is incredibly hard.

Just because of the standard of drivers
being so high.

[Mitch] Since I was a young boy…

driving fast feels easier than walking.

Just feels so natural. I feel like,
that's kind of, like, my natural habitat.

You know, I… I race
because I obviously love driving,

but I love it to try and be better
than everyone else,

and finding ways
of overcoming my competitors…

tryna outsmart them.

I've been
one of the most consistent drivers

in the category for a number of years

and finished top three
in the last three seasons.

[Radzi] Being a racing driver,
it's a solitary experience.

Losses can define you
for the good and the bad.

I don't know if anyone wants
a world title more than Mitch.

He's been close
but no cigar so many times.

[Nicki] He's one of the best drivers
in the paddock, hugely experienced,

um, really quite consistent.
But this is a proper opportunity

to finally take
that driver's championship title.

[commentator 1] Welcome along to Diriyah.

We're in the desert, and we're in
for our only night race on the calendar.

We're here in the outskirts of Riyadh
on a UNESCO World Heritage site,

and here we are
ready for the Diriyah E-Prix.

[Jake] I'm feeling good
going into the quali.

Hopefully, we can just have
a clean session,

and no drama, and then have a…
have an easier race.

It's Formula E. It never happens.

[Michael] To become world champion
in a very competitive series like this,

you know, that's definitely
one of the highlights of our racing team

since… in the last 20-some year.

I'm all about competition, you know,

and for us here,
the competition is just so tough.

I mean, it's as good as it gets
anywhere in the world.

to qualifying for round two.

Let's see how it works out
for the reigning champion.

[Karun] Races like Diriyah,
where the tracks are quite narrow,

qualifying is super important,
track position is super important.

You have to qualify well.

It… it is the most important qualifying,
I think, of the season.

We finished strongly last year.

We started Mexico reasonably well.

Um, it's been pretty obvious,
uh, as a team.

Mitch, he just wants to win. Like,
he's an absolute winning machine, right?

He loves racing. It's in his DNA.

He's incredibly natural
as a racing driver.

I feel like this is a Mitch Evans year.

He's got the experience.
He's got the speed.

He's just got to put the season together
to get that championship.

[Sam] Now, with Nick Cassidy in that team,

Jaguar will be, I think,
living up to their billing as favorites.

They've known each other
since they were kids.

Now, they're racing for the same team.

[Mitch] Since Nick joined the team,
every interview we've had

is all about our friendship.

[Mitch] We started in Auckland,
New Zealand,

go-karting together at six,
and growing up.

We're best mates.

We talk every day. You know,
we're… we're really good pals.

for 80% of their lives.

Two Kiwis from the same town,
racing in a World Championship.

It's a lovely story, and I just see
nothing but harmony there.

[Mitch] And now,
racing in a World Championship,

um, racing for one of the biggest
car manufacturers in the world.

[Andrew] Probably the most interesting
inter-team battle on the grid.

This is gonna be one of the brilliant
subplots of the season.

[Sam] The journalistic part of me
wants to see a great scrap,

and, you know,
a tooth-and-nail thing going on.

[Mitch] Obviously,
we wanna beat each other.

That's just human nature.

I really wanna win the championship,
but if I can't win and Nick does,

I'll be so happy for him.

[Sam] However, my feeling is that
they kind of need each other,

and Jaguar really want to get
that team's title.

They genuinely are good buddies.
They're good mates.

They're also very professional.

They also know that when, you know,
the helmet goes on

and the visor comes down…

they're racing against each other.

[Sam] If Nick Cassidy
wins the championship and Mitch doesn't,

and there's a few flare-ups along the way…

that's gonna be
a major test of any friendship.

[Nick] It doesn't matter
if you're best mates or not,

the team's always gonna have complications

if they have two drivers
fighting for the World Championship

at the front of the grid.

But find me one team principal
who doesn't want that.

[music concludes]

We have two lions,
but that is what it takes to win.

You don't fight for titles

without two incredibly strong drivers,
right?

When you're world champion,
there's definitely less pressure,

umm, but the expectation
is… is higher than ever.

[Karun] It's really quite impossible
to predict how things are going to unfold.

Jake thinks about the big picture.
He is quite a cerebral driver.

I think, he does race with his head
rather than his heart.

I think Mitch is fiercely competitive.

I'm sure Mitch has arrived into the season
knowing it's his best chance

to get that championship.

[Mitch] When you approach any season,
you kinda wanna hit the ground running,

get points on the board.

It just takes a little bit
of pressure off.

You just feel like you get a bit
of momentum, and that's really key.

they're all fast racing drivers.

I think you almost have to take that
as a default.

What separates them is this…
is the way they go about their racing.

[Jake] You've put in so much hard work,
you've put in so much effort,

you don't wanna fuck it up, basically.
It's important to deliver for the team.

You get nervous,
but as soon as those lights go out,

that just goes away immediately.

In the car,
I do have a different side to me.

Your blood's full of adrenaline.
You just want to win.

You have to be ruthless in our sport.

I do get pretty aggressive sometimes
on track.

[tense music continues]

[Mitch] If you're a bit soft,
you're gonna get pushed around.

The type of person that sets out
their goal to become a racing driver

is someone who has to be
incredibly focused, incredibly determined,

and unshaken by the highs and lows
that are thrown at them.

[Jake] I was eight years old
when I first started.

My dad used to race before I did.

Uh, nothing at a professional level,
but just for fun.

I loved watching him.

Because my dad's a mechanic,
he knew everything about go-karts.

That's what he did as a job.

I was pretty decent.

QI won some big races.

When I turned 12,

I got approached by a person
called Martin Hines.

And he said, "Come into our team."

"We'd love you to drive for us
free of charge."

I just thought
Jake had got something special.

He was a bit more aggressive in areas,
but exciting and very determined.

And all of a sudden, they tick
all the little boxes and you think,

"Perhaps we've got a champion here."

[interviewer] And you think
Jake is in that company, do you?

I wouldn't be standing here
talking to you if I didn't.

[heroic music playing]

[Jake] At that point, it then turned
way more serious for me.

And these guys paid for… for my racing

until I turned professional
at the age of 21.

I got sent the bill
of how much it came to,

and I pay a percentage
back to my sponsors now.

But I'm more than happy to do this

because I definitely wouldn't be
where I am today without these guys.

[intense upbeat music playing]

Well, so, Dennis telling the team

he'll do the fastest lap
at the end of the race.

That's supreme confidence
from the reigning World Champion.

You have to have the ability
to really manage

the race in terms of your strategy,
be comfortable that you're not leading,

but you know that it will come good

from a workload point of view

[Nicki] I think the beauty of Formula E
is that it's so difficult to predict

who is going to be coming out on top,
because it is so competitive.

The likes of Porsche, Jaguar,
huge names, big budgets,

so the stakes are incredibly high.

But in motorsports,
you can't win every time,

you're not gonna get pole position,
fastest lap,

and the win at every race,
you know, it's impossible.

So, all of these drivers are very used to,

you know, weathering the highs
and lows of motorsport

and ultimately there's probably
gonna be more lows.

So, this is what they're trained up for.

not had the start of the season

that you'd expect
from the former World Champion.

Yet to score a single point,

it's totally out of character
for the Porsche driver.

It is so hard to perform in Formula E
day in, day out.

I will never be satisfied

in season six.

And as for now, I still am.
I think to do it once is very, very hard.

From the first memories that I have,
I was involved in racing.

and then my uncles were racing as well,

and I was lucky that my family was able
to support the start of my career.

I do consider myself very privileged.

Being competitive, it's…
it's a foundation of my personality.

my World Championship in 2020,

it was the pandemic…

and it took me a long time
to win that thing.

What I felt when I won,
when I crossed the line,

I peaked at some kind of emotion
that it's hard to explain,

but so quickly, after maybe…
an hour after, it was…

it… it came down, and I was like…

"Man, it goes away quickly.
I need to do this again."

I hate not winning, that's clear.
I create my own pressure,

and the perfect world,
I want to win every race.

Morning.

Now, we gotta go to the simulator
for three or four days,

and these cars are so complex.

Basically, we can set this car up
corner by corner.

It takes a lot of time and a lot of work,
a lot of engineers.

We've got about three or four settings

that we can play with
during the braking phase,

and we can tweak those four independently
for every corner.

And once you get that in,
then the car will change on its own.

It's important work.
It's important that the sim

is as similar as possible to the real car,
which is always…

That's the difficulty
of running a simulator.

You can simulate a lot, I think.

We've had a bit of a break, like,
almost a month,

so it's good to get the whole team
back together

and kind of warm everything up for…

for next week.

Acting as team principal in a race team

means you are responsible
for the race success,

to keep people motivated,

and to keep all distractions away
from the team.

There's a lot of pressure.

With Porsche, it's very simple.

Everything they get themselves into,

with a lot of the new cars as well

that are about to make history

But for me as a driver,
it's insane to see some of this.

six years ago

where I started to really care
about history and older cars

and really appreciate how pure it was
to… to drive these things.

But then you come here

These guys have put a car in the museum.
That's… that's special, you know?

if you're not performing,

you will be questioned,
and you will be under pressure.

But I'm not worried because I know
how to go around the corner fast.

There's a lot of people behind the scenes
working incredibly hard on strategy,

but ultimately, when the lights go out,
it's all down to me.

[Mitch] I was definitely on the back foot,
headed into São Paulo,

but I won there the year before.

So, I thought,
"Okay, this is a bit of a reset."

and he sets the fastest lap here
at this point as well,

as he now tries to challenge
and does indeed go up into third.

is always in the back of your mind.

It's never nice to see
another car heavily damaged,

especially when it's your teammate
and also a really good friend.

which have been together for seven years.

So, to beat someone
who has had that longevity of continuity,
