He was real hero of mine's,

fantastic bloke. Guy was incredible

and he was awesome. Down in Mexico where

I first started down the Vicuna Chula,

Mexico at the big XRF 250,000 Watt

station down there. Bruno was hanging out

with me that night and I was on the air

that night and he kind of during the show

he kind of like grabbed the microphone.

He said you're listening to the Wolfman

Jack show and he goes. Like

this and well.

The name just kind of stuck

after that. Yeah, I'm a collector

from Bruno File. We call him.

There's about 20 of us all

over the world. Is that one

guy? Yeah, Malaysia. Tang

Tang, uh, writes me all the time. It

takes a lot of about six months to get

here, but he, he loves Bruno, loves him.

I think the language barrier helps.

Bruno gave me a a invaluable

piece of advice. He said nothing

succeeds in life like excess.

So I always remembered that, and I think

it's worked for me Well, if it hadn't

been for Bruno, there would have been no

Beatles.

And I'm Dick Clark, welcome to another

edition of Rock Heroes. Now. This week,

we take a timely look at a man

who is quite literally one of the unsung

heroes of American rock'n'roll. Tonight,

we turn the spotlight on Bruno Ratline, a

man whose influence on music and

musicians is legendary in the world of

entertainment. He even played a vital

role in the formation of The Beatles.

Yeah, he introduced me to George one

night at the Cavern Club, and that's how

it all started. You know, I

was derelict on the street and he brought

me into this club, introduced me to

George. And while the rest is history,

Bruno is a legend. But like so many

legends, things began very modestly, in

Bruno's case, in a small subterranean

club in Trenton, NJ. Rare footage of an

early performance by Bruno and the Bad

Boys, his first band. Has only recently

been on Earth. What's going

on with you?

You're going home.

Trenton's Tunnel Club no longer exists,

but in the second-half of the 60s it

was the focus of all rock innovation in

New Jersey. Now Bruno was the center of

a healthy local rivalry between New

Jersey musicians, many of whom still

remember very clearly those formative

years. My career started. Listening to

this man and and hearing the stories and

reading the newspaper articles of the

club dates, of course everybody went. I

was only 16 years old at the time and

I think the peak of his career. But I

snuck in one night through the fire exit

and I've seen nothing ever like it since.

What about the baby?

You love it.

As good as the band was, we felt

our problems came from Bruno's attitude.

He wouldn't talk to agents, he wouldn't

talk to managers. He wouldn't talk with

the press. He still won't. Which is why

I guess you're here talking with me. You

know, I've, I've worked with them all. I

from Whitney to Sly, from Joplin. To

Aretha. But I'd have

to say that the one that I really wanted,

the one that got away and that keeps me

up at night, it's gotta be Bruno.

Hey. Bruno

and the Bad Boys were offered a deal by

the exciting new West Coast record label

Technograph Records. Now the label was

dedicated under its unorthodox founder

Jamal Subgum, the third to bringing a new

level of technical excellence to the

record business. Now Bruno was signed as

part of the label so-called Second

Revolutionary War of Signings designed as

a counter. Tech did the British pop

invasion of the late 60s. I was a

freelance photographer in those days and

I I did a lot of photos at

record company signings and press

conferences for bands. But I'll never

forget the day the Bad Boys signed their

contract with Technograph Records. It was

insane. The the president, Mr. Jamal.

Bubble gum was one of the most feared

record company chiefs around and his his

tantrums and his temper were were

legendary. But Bruno was absolutely

fearless in those days. So after they

signed the contract, Mr. Subgum had this

this corny cake brought out. Bruno hated

it. You know, you could see right away.

And he winked at me as I was taking the

picture, so I knew something was gonna

happen. And sure enough, he offered Mr.

Subgum the first piece of cake and his he

bent forward to take a bite. He just

shoved it in his face. And I kept taking

pictures and he kept plastering his hair

with the frosting, and pretty soon the

whole band was in on it. And they were.

He was caked with cake from head to foot.

How's work on Bruno's first album Neared

Completion? Arrangements were made for

Bruno to make his first appearance on our

national television show American

Bandstand. What do you think of Bruno? I

think he's groovy. And you, he's OK, OK

and you. I love him. I'm I'm Marian

Kimberly all the way here from Trenton,

NJ. I'm the president of Bruno and the

Bad with Fan Club. And control yourself.

coming right up. When the Bad Boys did

bandstand, their albums hadn't been

pressed yet. And since I'd done that

cover photos, they asked me to make a

mock up for Dick Clark to use on the

show. I've still got it here. Kept it all

these years. I guess it's quite a

collectors item. Battle of Mission.

Right. We

thought that everything that's worth

imagining, she told me stories that

would milk the story.

People hold a massive.

She threw a little kiss. So Shine

says you will then disappear into the

night. From

there on, a $10.00 bill underneath

the bed in a box.

They used to play the record and you'd

fake it, but I couldn't hear the track

loud enough to keep the beat and this

really threw Bruno and the band off.

Wow. I'm

not very good looking.

You didn't cook it just like

you made mine.

A Manhattan home. We were all very

excited to get on Bandstand, especially

with two of the biggest groups at the

time, The Beach Boys and Freddie and the

Dreamers. There was a bit of confusion as

to who should open the show.

And it was decided that Bruno should open

the show. He didn't like it. Of course.

There was always a sense of rivalry

between East Coast bands and West Coast

bands. And there was a battle as to who

would go on 1st. And Bruno. Bruno was was

scheduled to be going first and he wasn't

too happy about that. But they did their

song. Anyway, and it was called coming

right up, but a fight broke out and kind

of messed things up and Dick Clark of

course cancelled all the the rest of the

tapings and stormed out mad. And we were

pretty mad too, you know. Ohh.

You know, in the bad boys, ladies and

gentlemen, Bruno, do me a favor,

introduce me to.

Bruno, Bruno says. Yeah, I can't believe

what you just couldn't keep. Excuse me,

I couldn't. The whole point

it's been like. You're talking about

a job, Jim. Come on. Yeah.

You can't use this, though.

What about you? What are you doing? What

are you doing? No, it wasn't entirely

Bruno's fault. Very few of the problems

that stood between Bruno and superstardom

in those early days were his fault, but

they were there just the same. Now,

following Heart on the heels of the

bandstand debacle was perhaps the biggest

disaster of them all in a devastating

blaze, those unique offices. Technograph

Records, together with the recording

studios on the 1st floor, were reduced to

a pile of ashes, and amongst those ashes

were the remains of Bruno's first album.

Then the masters were completely

destroyed and months and months of

intense recording had literally gone up

in smoke. Ironically, the only recording

of Coming Right Up to Survive was the one

he cut. At Bandstand, he felt that

he was to blame, inasmuch as he

was the last person in the studios

before the fire and there were those

who agreed with him. With that fire,

I practically lost everything. And there

are rumors. That.

Bruno was involved in it but

I don't think so and I

don't hold any grudge against him.

As a matter of fact, after

the technograph was burned down, I

went into another business like I

have opened Indian Restaurant and.

As a matter of fact, Bruno

still comes to my restaurant and

we are still good friends. He

is very fond of tandoori lobster.

Lamb vindaloo, vegetable biryani and

garlic naan bread. I think

that if. It hadn't

happened. Bruno would

have been haunted by that fire forever.

So.

And I I would assume that most of the

people there had never seen Bruno

perform. And uh.

Guy was incredible and he was awesome. I

think it was responsible for bringing him

out of that that. The cardiac

state he was in because of the fire and

it really bored him out and God knows

what would have happened if there was no

wisdom. Ladies

and gentlemen, please welcome Bruno

and the Crayon Jungle.

You know, Jefferson Airplane wasn't in

the main Woodstock film, and we felt

pretty badly about it until we found out

that Bruno wasn't in it either. And Bruno

told us that it was probably cooler not

to be in the film anyhow, the fact that

he wasn't on the album.

I mean, a lot of the people in the

industry, I don't know how many people

remember about him or know this about

him, but he was the one who wanted to

make Woodstock a free festival.

And I was captured.

That's what I was thinking.

Just to not help myself from shouting.

What's your name? What's your name? I'm

looking here, come here.

Just before we were about to go on,

we heard like half a million kids all

shouting Boo Boo. That really scared us.

And then we turn around and notice that

Bruno was standing talking to one of the

road managers and the audience had

spotted him and they weren't shouting Boo

at all. They were shouting Bruno. Bruno

It became instantly not fun because we

discovered that we had to follow Bruno,

which led to those immortal words that

everyone noticed me for, which started

out my career where and I say on

camera we're scared shirtless.

Let's go, let's go.

On the way home.

I'm gonna say, what do you say, boy, you

better leave my daughter alone after

Woodstock, you know, kind of went to our

heads, a lot of us. And he said he

would never perform for fewer than

400,000 people again after Woodstock. And

I didn't follow him after that, but I

heard he was back in the clubs about a

week later. Back to this

crime. I thought

around another stone.

For those of us who were there.

We know. We know what he did to

those people and.

We were lucky the guy was.

It was clear that with Woodstock,

something had happened to an entire

generation. Music found itself in what

was to become known as the psychedelic

era. Bruno showed us this film. No one's

home, you know, I think that started the

whole sideline era.

Our journeys just begun quickly

take your place.

My eternal travelers admitted

and spayed.

Dead Wanderers we all through the seed

of southern bliss.

There, behold the gates of nothingness.

Everyone knew about Bruno's film No

One's Home, and I would say

that even for that time then

the lyrics were really hideous. Forests

of ice streets. Phone.

Forests of ice, streets of

phone chimes ring out. We're

all alone.

You know, we're really serious about

peace and love during the 60s, and

it may seem ridiculous, but Bruno was

just as serious as the rest of

us. And it may seem trivial now,

but it didn't seem silly. At the time,

although some of the music was.

Shadows of light. The silent voices

moaned forever more. There's no one

home.

There wasn't so much Bruno singing that

impressed me. It was more the amount of

acid he took before he sang. He just, I

think he took more acid probably than

anyone's ever taken in the whole world in

one go, you know, And it really impressed

me. He never had anything to do with

drugs. He never allowed

anyone even connected with the band to

have anything to do with drugs.

What he would do was just before he

went on, he'd gobbled inordinate amounts

of sugar cubes. He loved the stuff. It

gave him energy.

They must have presumed he was dropping

acid.

Company me brothers and sisters of

failed away this wayward weary place

blinding Peking duck dark in our

sight. Beware the torches that burn

not light. Fabled forces unfold clear

like solitary soldiers armed with fear

of soul. The spirit of Evermore

inside out. They blocked the door.

Fantastic. Pretty good.

Divergent energies flow as we

are here and we are

there, scattered together for all

to share. Celestial salesman shine

Just passed.

There came a point after the psychedelic

period that Bruno evidently had enough of

beads, bell bottoms and dayglow posters.

So he fired the band,

he fired me.

And he took off to Detroit to find his

roots. He moved to Motown to live in a

ghetto tenement Times were tough,

especially for a young white musician in

Detroit. Hi, friends. Bruno here of

Bruno's Corvettes. I got 3 words for you

today. Corvettes, Corvettes, Corvettes,

Corvettes. That was 4 words. We got

deals, deals, deals, deals. I got 60.

may still be where we sold that one just

like that. The cars are going going,

folks, Trust me. We thought that was

ridiculous, a talent like Bruno selling

cars. So we called him up and suggested

we get together and record a song.

Naturally, he agreed. So we cut this

incredible version of Under the

Boardwalk, and then we got together and

performed it on a local Detroit

television show. Called Bless My Soul, a

sort of soul meets gospel show. I

think that Don Cornelius was the host.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, feast your

eyes on two of the greatest attractions

in all of show business right here

on one stage, the incredible incomparable

Bruno and. The

mighty, mighty

temptations.

Big enough down here with us under the

boardwalk. Left through there

when the sun beats down and melts

the tile up on the roof.

And the streets get so hot we should

tie your feet. More fire.

Under the boat.

Under the boardwalk. Ohh

son, under the boardwalk.

People were being abused.

We'll be falling in love with the

bow Bow Bow Wow. That was the

first time I had ever seen Bruno

perform, and he was great. That version

of Under the Boardwalk should have been

a smash, but it was never released

and I could never understand why.

Ohh, the sun.

We'll be having some fun.

Detroit recharged Bruno's musical

batteries, but it didn't pay the rent. He

needed something new, something very

commercial. Go with.

Go to boogie. Boogie down Boogie. Yeah, I

remember when I first heard Ty and my Tie

I, I thought that was a big hit record.

I, I liked it a lot, but of course, I

also knew it was a few years ahead of its

time, you know, maybe a few years and

about 3 months actually. I think we could

have actually created the songs that

we've done in our careers, but had it not

been for Bruno's assistance. He was there

when we got out. Yeah, I remember we were

writing How Deep Is Your Love? And he

came up with How Deep, and when we were

writing Saturday Night Fever, he came up

with Saturday. I remember Bernie Taupin.

Writing this song called Bernie and The

Jets and I thought it was a bit

egotistical and I played it the Bruno.

Bruno said no, you should call it Bruno

and The Jets, which I thought was even

more egotistical, but you know, Bruno was

Bruno. And I thought, well, I'll have to

do it. And then of course he fired the

band. So between the two of them I

thought neither of you are going to call

it Benny and The Jets. Yeah, I

got all kinds of stuff. I mean, I

defy you find somebody with more Bruno

Bilia than me. Nobody. So.

OK. Love

this tie. The

hat. This hat.

Put on where this happened just starting

out. To sweat.

What do you think?Coming right up,

I guess it must have been the early 70s

when Kiss first got together. Basically

we were part of a band called the Sergey

Kaczynski Orchestra. We did a lot of bar

mitzvahs, weddings, things like that.

Things started to get a little tight,

little tough. Bruno came up with this

idea that we should wear makeup,

costumes, leather, things like that. He

told Sergei to smash the according to at

the end of the show. Things really

started to pick up for us then. Sergey

crushed his foot with the accordion. He

was always one of those people that when

he spoke, people would listen. Yeah.

Yeah, even as an average. But he was

never really average, was he? No, He was

one of the kind. Say average of the kind.

You say that in inverted commas, like.

But as with most of the key figures of

the rock revolution, not everything that

Bruno touched. Turned to gold. Now take,

for example, a moment in musical history

that Bruno would probably like to forget.

He had a band called Bruno's Basement.

And then, in typical Bruno fashion, he

went one step too. Are he decided they

should be women? Four women bass players?

Well, you know, we tried to talk him out

of it.

The commercial failure of this disco bid

and the firing of The Jets, topped off by

Bruno's basement disaster, seemed to be

just about the last straw for Bruno.

Something snapped and suddenly he was

gone. He had disappeared. Nobody really

knew where he was. My good friend told me

that he was choreographing bands for

Motown Temptations. 4 tops, that kind of

thing. But I'll tell you, someone else

told me that he was doing speech writing

for Jimmy Swaggart, and if you knew

Bruno, I think he was probably doing

both. I'm walking up 6th Ave. and I buy a

hot dog from one of those Sabrett stands

and I'm walking away eating the thing and

I hear the Blues like. Nobody can sing

it. And that's gotta be Bruno, right? I

love the guy. Turn around and he's gone

in a crowd. The stand is still there,

though. But I was never sure. I was never

really sure when when Bruno disappeared.

I remember everybody in the business kind

of like saying, boy, that's, that's

really the hip thing to do, you know,

disappear. And then in the weeks that

followed. Mick Jagger disappeared, you

know, ohh, Rod Stewart disappeared, Bob

Dylan disappeared. Even I disappeared,

but I only disappeared for about a week

because I had to come back and do

a, a, a gig in Sacramento, you know,

an oldie show. And I don't know why

I I really came back either because all

the accent. . You know what I mean? Well,

there's lots of rumors why Bruno

disappeared when I heard he went to a

monastery. But yes, I personally heard of

him was the day that I went down to the

local Police Department because he had

stole one of my amplifiers. And if you

see him, tell him I want it back. You got

this incredible idea, an invented

Domino's Pizza. When Bruno disappeared,

all sorts of rumours, you know, that he

was, you know, Howard Hughes, his gay

lover. Nobody knew where he was, as far

as I know. And we didn't know what he was

doing. We figured maybe he'd gone off to,

to learn something. It's sort of like

Jesus going off into the wilderness, you

know, I mean, I hate to be sacrilegious,

but there is that. Parallel. He was

Bruce Lee. He, he

lived at Double Roll and then, uh.

He just chose to.

Continuous career as as Bruno

and. Killed off Bruce Lee But

then, as the 70s were drawing to a

close and everyone had given up all hope

of Bruno reappearing, he was rediscovered

on the stage of New York's Metropolitan

Opera House. Singing opera. He dedicated

his elegantly bruised vocal stylings to

the music of Verdi, Vogner and the rest.

He was a flamboyant if. Slightly erratic

Anyway, the thing that really kills me?

So when you talk about Bruno being gone.

He's not gone. Never was.

The guy still performs. He's

still out there, in fact.

remarkable as Brutos would resurface. And

now, in 1987, that is precisely what has

happened. This will be remembered as the

year in which Bruno returned with a new

band and with the new album called,

appropriately enough, the Return of

Bruno. And this time, he's going to go

the distance. I'm Dick Clark, and you've

Yeah, a lot of people don't know this,

but, uh. I was the guy that invented

Gumby. Yeah, I did that. I invented that.

I I got scooped which we had some

problems with the my wife and I basically

created it. We.

Did we are not working, but we we made

him we made some discover the products

with the product that we had some bugs

was the first one that originally called

gumby well no the original name we were

going to call him Jimmy yes that doesn't

work for me well my aunt and uncle Jimmy

and he was down on his luck and I figured

we get his name in there but there's. I

jimmies. So that didn't work out too

well. Not that many Jimmy'z eating the

whole thing actually that didn't come
