Putting in them new windows

Third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander.

My team and I are building
on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
"The Rock" for nothing.

We fight the elements year-round
to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it!

When you live on an island,
water is a huge part of life,

now and back in the day.

For years and years,
people have lived and worked

along the coast in
Newfoundland and Labrador.

And for me, if I can work
near the water, I will.

I want the chickens to have
a great view of the ocean.

Look! I'm next to the ocean.

Bring out my toys!

What do they know, huh?

And we're in the middle of
a doozy project in New Perlican.

Michael and Karen's house
hangs a bit over the water,

and their foundation
wasn't going to last.

The neighbours are
always on the lookout that

we don't end up in the water.
- And we don't wanna end up

in the water.

So we replaced
the old pillars with new beams

and custom-built cribs.

We got to get this beam up
tight now to this log,

and then we're going to put in
one more crib

and this beam is done.

Looks mint!

And when you live
in New Perlican,

you need a stage.
There's over 20 of them here.

A stage is basically a shed
on top of the water

used to store your fishing gear.

But the homeowners wanted

a place for the guests
to hang out.

To save time and gas driving
back and forth,

we're building it at the shop.

When it's done, we'll haul it
and install it,

and throw a big ol'
stage party to celebrate.

But you can't have a stage
without a wharf.

And since theirs got
washed away in Snowmageddon,

I also got my buddy Aaron
to build that too.

So we're gonna brace
this crib,

we're gonna put our poles out
and get ready for decking.

So another job done.

Next up, the stage.

It's early morning and just
starting to get daylight,

and we're gonna start
the stage.

So we got Paul and Holly
here now framing it up

and we got the plan.

Place is going 8 by 10.

So we're not building a floor,
which seems a little bit odd,

but the floor is
actually the wharf,

the dock that's sitting over
in New Perlican that's all done.

So just gonna be four walls,
all braced up with a roof on,

lay it in place and
the floor is the dock.

That's your dancefloor.

We're building it to fit
perfectly on the wharf.

We're using the old doors
that they got,

so it's two old doors on
the front, old one on the back,

three old stained-glass windows
they got out of the building

that we're gonna build
frames for, put 'em into it.

We're gonna do scallops
in the eaves,

paint it all
different colours.

The homeowners want this
to have a mermaid theme,

so there'll be a custom piece
on the front door,

and more custom features inside,

including furniture
we'll make from materials

they already have.

Basically reuse,
recycle and make it unique.

So the doors, we're reusing.

We just have to build the box.
The windows, we're using,

they took it outta an old
building over New Perlican.

So we just had
to build the frames.

The lumber on the inside
they recycled.

So it's a lotta recycled
material here, which we like.

So there's no sheeting
on the inside,

no insulation,
no nothing.

It's just basically... well,
the old fishing stages,

it wasn't really for design.
They were mostly for work.

Just gonna be studs.

That don't mean us.

Oh, my.
- It's definitely gonna
be unique,

it's definitely gonna stand out.
It's gonna be pretty bright.

Apparently, they're putting
a mermaid on the...

on the front of the door.

I was hopin' it was
gonna be my cut-out.

Best kind. When I comes back,
I'll "sea" it done.

Sea...?

It's great to be
buildin' this here because

on days like this
when it's miserable,

to be all the way
to New Perlican and to come back

at the end of the day
and be soaking wet

would just be miserable.

So to have this here
and we're able to jump into it

if we get a free minute

really helps keep us
with a full schedule.

It's a rainy old day.

You gotta pivot very fast.
So we're gonna pivot inside.

We got a special little project.

See what it's gonna be.

So if you look around
New Perlican,

there's definitely a lot of
iconic stages which are

all different colours,
built a certain way.

Then each one of them
kind of resembles

the homeowners, you know,
unique thing about it.

We're gonna set this one apart
for Karen and Michael.

They definitely want it
to stand out

for them havin'
a little business.

They're gonna wanna be seen
and we're gonna make sure

it's gonna be seen.
You know, they want to see it

when the fog starts rolling up.

To match the mermaid design,
we're using cedar shakes

to create a fish-scale effect.

We gotta cut all of these
scallops out of cedar shakes.

They come in square and
we gotta make 'em round.

There's a whole lotta them,
and then

we gotta paint 'em all
different colours.

Yeah, I'm pretty comfortable
on a bandsaw.

Shouldn't be too bad.

Michael and Holly gotta
cut a lot of cedar shakes.

Probably... I'm gonna say,

if I had to guess right now,
100 shakes that they gotta cut.

Probably got 20 done.

Now is like the well-greased
machine.

Michael marking 'em,

Time now for Matt and PJ
to work their magic

with some old finds that Sam
dropped off

from Karen and Michael's shed.

These windows have
to be used in the stage.

And the green on this glass
is very inspiring to me.

They're definitely not
new vinyl windows.

These are some old
stained-glass windows.

I'm thinking probably 70...

60-70 years old.
It's a design decision for sure.

First thing you have to do is
make sure they're...

they're stable enough
to be used.

And then, we have
to square 'em up

because they're never square.

And us cabinet guys, we like
everything really square.

Really, really square.

Hmm.

These are for the back
of the stage.

The doors for the stage
we got are older doors.

They're all out.
They're squish-squashed.

Just years and years

of weather definitely created
problems with these doors.

As carpenters, we don't like
something that's out of square.

It's just... it's not right.

We gotta fix it.

It's the outsides of
the bevel on this one.

It's got to go this way.

Little bit more tricky
to work with,

little bit more time-consuming.

But it's definitely
a good experience for sure.

That's beautiful.

In Brigus,
Paul and Holly's

caught a break in the weather,

and can work on the addition
at Irish Town Road.

We're finishing up
the framing,

getting everything secured
and that now before

the big storm moves
in the weekend.

This is
a massive renovation

on this 60-year-old home.

Bill and his family won't
recognize it when it's done.

We're pushing the back wall out
for a larger dining room

and back porch with laundry.

The whole living area
will be opened up

and have a lot more space.

Then, on the side of the house,
we're adding a large extension

to create a main-floor
bedroom for Bill,

with a large walk-in closet,
a washroom,

all wheelchair accessible.

We made great progress
on this new design.

The structural work is done,

the concrete slab floor
is poured,

and the addition at the back
is framed up.

And when Paul's finished,
we can add a roof.

I love progress.

Today, we got to get
these remainder walls up,

sheeted and get some
additional bracing on

with the longer walls
and everything.

You don't want 'em
to blow down in the centres.

Just me and Holly here
to hammer this out

and we'll get her done.

At my shop,
Paul and Holly

are framing together again. Only
this time, it's for the stage.

Holly, how wide are they?

- This is like 15 and an eighth.
- That'll work.

The goal: get it
all framed up and sheeted

so it's ready for
the sea-blue clapboard.

Everyone these days seems
to want to have their stage
stand out.

So, this owner is really
taking it to the next level

with the colour scheme.

And they're gonna have
stained glass over the door,

so that's definitely a one of

that I haven't seen yet
in a stage.

We're hoping to get some
shingles on, clapboard on,

make some good progress.

The "under the sea"
theme is really popping now.

The colourful shakes are meant
to look like a mermaid's tail.

Even though it's raining,

we're not underwater
with the design yet.

That's why I called in
Sam for some sign-off.

- A beautiful day to be outside.
- I know!

But hey, goes with the theme.

We're 'posed to be under
the sea, aren't we?

- That's right.
- It's getting wet.

So here it is.
- Ooh, it's looking good!

I love the scallops.
They're beautiful.

It's looking good.

So if you notice,
we got the coffee

painted on the clapboard.

So this is Chantilly lace
and this is Swiss coffee.

- It's not much of a contrast.
- No.

It almost looks more like
a mistake than intentional.

Yeah, that's what
I was thinking.

That's why I called you.
So do you wanna go

all Chantilly lace?

Or do I wanna go
all Swiss coffee?

- Totally up to you.
- I have to think about that.

Big decision.
Coffee or lace.

Let's do the Swiss coffee
on everything.

Cool. And for the ceiling,

you wanted some patchwork
for the old boards?

Do we have enough of
that pallet wood

of Michael and Karen's
for the ceiling?

- No, we don't.
- Do we have like a good amount?

What I told the b'ys to do
is work from both sides,

and it might be a centre strip
of a foot or 2 ft.

- Okay.
- And then, we can do some other

kinda wood or do
something different.
- Yeah.

- You cold?
- I'm froze.

So we're here in Irishtown
and we got a whole lot goin' on.

We got everybody here.
We got Harvey, we got Al,

we got Paul, we got Michael
and we got Nikki.

Someone's finishing off
the roof,

someone's up at the shingles.
Kinda moving around.

Whatever we can get done,
it's a lot better

when it comes
to the home stretch.

A renovation this size,

you can have many
different projects.

That's why we can have
the full crew.

There's tasks everywhere.

And if you get a lotta people,
10 tasks is being done

in the same time, 'cause
it's no good to have

10 people holding one piece
of two-by-four.

The goal is always try
to get as far as ahead

as we can without
waiting for something.

We're waiting on windows,
but we can still

put a little bit
of the roof on...

So we were able to sheet over
this side of the roof,

but we're still waiting
for roof trusses.

And those are for
the bedroom addition.

But on the second floor
of the house,

the homeowners want to add
dormers at the back

to bring in more light.

A dormer is basically a window
built out from a roof.

Unlike a skylight, it'll add

more headroom in a space
and a view.

And since the homeowners wanted
to replace all the shingles

with new ones, no better time
to add it now.

Sometimes it goes really good,
sometimes it goes really bad.

But he's just getting into it.
We'll see how...

see how it goes.

Takes a little bit of
skill and know-how.

It's like anything.
You're cutting into the roof.

That's all the structure.
So you gotta know

how to put it back together.

It'll all work out.

Gonna be mint.

So we're trying to sister up
a few rafters to the roof

to keep the roof line goin',
and then

we're gonna stitch in
some dormers.

I don't have the muscles
the b'ys got, or the swing,

so I struggle a bit more
with the framing.

Watch yourself.

I would've done anything today.

I'd have picked and shovelled
a grave hole today.

Anything to get out of here.

So I gotta suck it up
and get through it.

Yeah. So...
we almost got this opening

for the dormer all framed up.

It's got a couple of joist
hangers put on,

a little bit of sheeting
to trim up

and we'll be on to getting
the walls framed.

It is pretty cool,
though, in all honesty,

when you're doing a dormers.
It's not every day

you gets a chance
to do a dormer.

Not everybody wants
a dormer in their house.

So it is pretty cool when
the dormer's done

and you sees it
all put together.

It's worth the stress.

Ah! Oh, my god!

The custom work
continues at the shop

for the stage, only this time

the final details
will be finished

by Michael the homeowner.

This is the front door
for the fishing stage,

created this little spot up here
for the homeowner.

He's goin' to make
a stained-glass piece,

custom piece to fit in here.

I've never seen a mermaid
front door on a stage before,

but it's gonna be
interesting to see.

This window that
I'm making right now

is going overtop of the door
that's going into our stage.

The name of the stage is going
to be Mermaid Landing.

So we thought that we would
have something

to go with the theme, which
would be a nice mermaid tail.

Clear pieces are now
all cut out

and that's going to be
the clear part of the window.

All these pieces here
that you see

that are still on templates,

they will be all the fin of
the mermaid coming off.

And the little pieces
on the side here,

you see they're still...

the pieces of Bristol board
are in there.

That's going to be little
pieces of seaweed on each side.

Right now, I'm just cutting...

rough cutting my...
my pieces out.

I've done a score line on here.

That's released the surface
tension of the glass.

So I put my pliers right up
to the edge

where the score line is.
And then, I just break it off.

But you can see there's
little rough edges

and that will be on the grinder
to take care of that.

Now it's not sharp.

All the rough edges are gone, smooth.

It's a little wet but goes
right back into the pattern now.

Once all these pieces
are cut out and ground,

I use this copper foil

to go around each piece
and this is self-adhesive,

so it sticks to the glass.

This is the template that Matt
cut for me at Newfound Builders.

And it's an eighth of an inch

smaller than
the existing opening.

So I have to adjust this
a little bit

because with all the foil
going in here,

I'm going to have maybe
100 layers,

which is going to just
push it out a little bit.

So you have to kinda cut
the glass a little bit smaller

to allow for the copper foil.

And hopefully it'll fit.

We're back at
Irishtown Road in Brigus,

where the wait is over
for the roof trusses

for the addition.

The roof trusses are engineered,
built off-site.

The homeowners wanted just
one... like a shed roof.

Basically, that kinda looked

like the old store
back in the day

and that's the look that
they wanted to go with.

I'm down on the ground
being the grunt today

and I'm sliding them up, passing
them to Michael and Nikki

and they're getting them
nailed on.

Is that an original?
- That's an original.

I've been down on the rope,

I've been up top.

But today, I don't have Paul.

I'm up here by myself.

Every time, you get
a little bit more trust.

And he's not yelling at me
either, so it's a good day.

So we got
the trusses up.

They went pretty smooth.
Everything's lookin' good.

Finish off with
some sheeting.

Winter's creepin' up
pretty fast,

so the quicker we can get it
buttoned up and clapboard on,

moved into the pretty stuff.

Isn't it always
gonna be pretty?

No. Every day working with you

is not always pretty, either.

- Nikki, 4 or 6 ft?
- I prefer 4.

So roof is all buttoned up,
looks amazing.

We're ready for
the trades to get in,

get the electricians,
plumbers rollin'.

Get this place clued up.

Now, now.
Don't rush too far.

Gotta get some torch
on the shingles done.

- Let's just hurry up and
get it done so we can--
- They're not coming in

if they can get a little bit
of water on 'em. Remember,

the b'ys are made of sugar.

With the sheeting done,
we gotta bring in specialists

to do a torch-on-roof.

This side over here
is a low slope roof.

The existing roof is a 6/12.

You got a nice peak for
the rain to actually run off.

Right here on the addition,
we're doing a 1/12.

So take like a 6/12,

a 1/12 is pretty much
almost flat.

Anything below a 4/12, you need
to go torch on, not shingles.

Because with shingles,
the water and the ice

will actually get up underneath.
That's the risk.

With flat roofs,
once you torch it on,

you shouldn't have a leak.

Another major step done
in this reno.

And down the road at my shop...

PJ and Matt fixed and primed
the old doors

and are ready for
my star painter, my mom!

I always help Randy
at my spare time,

whenever he needs me to.

Only just a call away.

I really likes being busy.

I'm not one for sittin'.

If mother's help
is up for grabs,

I'm not saying "no" to that.

There's plenty of painting
on this job.

So Betty's working
on the inside

gettin' the final coat.

It was
Chantilly lace...

and now I'm changing it
to coffee white.

As you can see, when
I'm rolling it on,

it's brighter.

And I'm workin' on

all the exterior paint,
ready to go.

It's not too often I gets
to work with Betty no more,

bein' so busy. But me
and Mudder are the dream team.

We got a mutual respect.

She knows what I needs,
I knows what she needs.

We got all the roofing
work done at Irishtown Road.

Gonna be mint.

And we even got started
on the electrical.

But just when I thought
we're back on track...

the window and door order is now
delayed by a month.

Which means we can't
move forward

until everything is installed
and watertight.

Supply chain issues
got me again.

There's a huge backlog
on so many materials right now,

so I wanna make sure
we don't fall behind

on the design materials too.

So I'm meeting Sam and Sasha
a bit earlier than normal

to lock in the design.

This is looking great.
I am super impressed

with the difference here. Wow.
So much more open.

It is. We gave it a little bit
more headroom,

we made it open concept because
it used to be a wall here.

Dividing the kitchen
and the living room
and the dining room.

What a difference.
But still lots to do.

like a calm kinda

So we were thinking maybe

we could do some wainscotting,
in a soft, more muted tone.

a wallpaper above it

that's a little bit more fun.
But still soft.

So this is kinda
living room, dining room.

We're gonna do this whole space.

That's really gonna make
a big difference,

a little bit of texture.

We knocked out this wall,
we opened it all up.

We added a beam.

And we actually blowed out
this addition.

It was a little porch
on the back.

Now they're making
a bigger mudroom

because they wants
the washer and dryer.

The layout for me
is really nice.

We're gonna have
our stove here,

lots of countertop space,
which is great to work with.

Yeah.
- We've got our sink underneath
here, nice area to look out to.

And then we have
our fridge here.

So I mean, it's a great layout.
It is.

So the b'ys in the shop are
building the kitchen.

Should be able to hit
the deadline

and make it look awesome too.

I'm super impressed.

I do. But what about
everything else?

we're still waiting on windows,
we're still waiting on a door.

Yeah, that's outta my control.

And then you have extra
cabinets here

right to the ceiling with
some glass cabinet doors

so we can display some of
their beautiful things.

And we got a big island.

Right. An island that
they didn't have before.

- Exactly. It's so nice.

So you brought along
the samples

for the cabinet doors.
- We did. That's the ones that

the homeowners picked out.
- Yeah, I'm really happy with

how that's looking. It's gonna
be nice and fresh, clean.

And then, we got
the backsplash. I think...

adding that in, we can kinda see
now the style with it.

Yeah, so we need
something to kinda elevate it.

Right?
Yeah, exactly.

So we have this one.

I'm not loving it.
I find it a bit shiny.

I like this other one
a bit more here.

This little... yeah,
that's really nice.

- There's this one.
- Yeah, that looks deadly.

I like those a lot.
I do like the texture of this.

I like that it's a little
bit of a modern vibe.

Yeah, it's got like
a crackle effect.

So we can either
stagger that or stack it.

Once we put in our hardware,

our décor pieces,

this is all a bit more neutral,

We can actually pull it off too.

the same floor throughout
this whole space.

They want everything on
the main level because

they're thinking of a future,
make it wheelchair accessible,

once they get older.

So every door is made for
a wheelchair

and even their bedroom
that's in the other end.

I can see
the difference in the size.

This is gonna be
their bedroom.

So this is the new piece

we built on.

This is a great space.

This little area down here
for some seating.

And we got a washroom
here and a walk-in closet.

Plus, their shower is actually
wheelchair accessible too.

Just thinking of
the future, really.

All those things,
that's really important too.

They need to make sure they can
wheel in over the tiles.

- No lips, all little details.

No transitions.
It's seamless transition

for wheelchairs and everything.
Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

The flooring here, I believe
we have some samples

for us to kinda look at.
I did.

And we need to pick out a colour
so we can pick out the flooring.

The feel of the house is that
kind of soft,

creamy, neutral vibe.
- Yeah.

- So we're gonna wanna stay...
- Go with those like
green undertones.

We wanna stay away from anything
too red or too yellow.

So I think this is

probably your best option.

putting the stage on the flatbed

and bring it to New Perlican.

But we just got word of a big
winter storm's blowing in.

So now we gotta pivot,

and race against
Mother Nature.

We got everybody, seems like
they're now gonna help us.

We got Aaron, you know,
his buddies.

Byron came along.
Even the old man came out.

Jeez, you're bright

Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

By now, we're pros at
loading and hauling buildings.

But every structure
is a little different,

not only is this one bigger than
the rest we're after building,

it doesn't have a floor.

We gotta get crafty.

All the other jobs, we used
our own trailer,

just because the structure
was able to fit.

This one's a lot bigger.

Couldn't fit our trailer,
so now we got Aaron's.

We're lookin' for
something 10 ft

to go across
that stage there.

This structure is 8 by 10.
So 8 wide.

Our trailer can only take
a little over 6 ft.

8 ft will work, but we still
need something 10 ft.

- Throw the strapper back.

What are you gonna do,
go through the window holes?

I was gonna go
around the whole thing.

- Yeah.

We're gonna strap 'er
on there now and hopefully...

hopefully she holds.

The boom truck's gonna do all

is break 'em on route.

In New Perlican,
the snowstorm hit,

and another's on its way.

But the sea is calm, so we can
finish some installs today.

So Nikki and Paul's here now
doin' the final little details,

and then find out what we gotta
do in the next coming days.

And then turn it over
to the homeowners.

Today, get it all painted,
get the two windows in.

Touch up on the outside,
touch up on the inside,

get the door/table mounted.

Sounds good. We add a nice
little wood stove here now,

and a few moose sausage frying,
maybe a touton, have a feed.

We don't wanna do any
of the final touches.

Like we didn't put in
the windows

because it was being shipped.

Newfoundland roads got
a few bumps into it, right?

Potholes that
you lose a truck in.

So the windows had
to go in after.

But as you see, it's a little
bit of a challenge.

Because there's water
on both sides.

The worst job we got
is the window.

It's high tide in the morning.

It'd be a lot easier to do
when the tides are lower

'cause you could probably get
around certain spots

with your rubber boots.
But hey,

you gotta do
the worst job first,

save the easy stuff for after.

So we're just gonna get at it.

Couple of strap marks
back there

on the other side
and that was it.

And like everything,
time's a-tickin'.

We gotta get it in before dark

and get outta here
before the snow comes.

What if I dropped it

I've got a hold

I'm trying to figure out
this table here

that Matt got pre-assembled.

He wrote me some notes
on the table leg

and it's 18 and a quarter inches

from the centre of the window.

So level legs on top,
you know,

it's not much to mess up there.

So if something goes wrong,
it's not very good.

So far so good.

Few screws here,
few screws there.

And voilà, here's our table.

The fold-out table
is just one of

many custom pieces
for Karen and Michael.

Another big one is
a large mermaid

that's being painted
for the front door

by a local artist.

Where it's going on
the front of a fishing stage,

it's probably gonna get
beaten up with the elements,

so we decided to paint it
on plywood,

that could be removed and...

during the winter months.

I think the mermaid design,
it works so well

'cause, of course,
the lore of Newfoundland

and the ocean and mermaids,

it's... I think it's just

such a part of storytelling and
tradition here in Newfoundland.

And I'm really excited now
to see what Randy and Sam

do with the final build
and how it all comes together.

And perhaps maybe head out
to New Perlican

and see it for myself.

This is made out of
recycled fishing rope.

So today, I'm at the fishing
stage putting it all together.

I've got a trunk full of stuff
here that I'm gonna bring

into the fishing stage.
So it's not your traditional
fishing stage,

so we're bringing in a lot of
unique and fun items

that maybe you wouldn't
typically see in there.

So I've got Asha on board today,

so she's helping me
design and style,

and then Paul is
in there now.

He's installing some brackets
and some door handles,

and actually some lace curtains.

Whose grandmother's
coffee table

did you take those off?

So are you talking centre
of this right here,

This is my favourite day,
this is what I wait for.

Look at this guy.

You know, when I start
a project, like this is the...

the end goal. This is the day
that I'm most excited about

for sure, is install day.
Lotta fun.

They're lined with concrete.

- Which is good
so they won't blow away.
- Yeah.

It might need a little
of Paul's special touch.

I don't know.

This project was just
so much fun for me.

It was something completely
outta the box,
outta the ordinary.

It was a little bit
traditional Newfoundland,

but with a whole other
kind of a twist.

Essentially, it's really
four walls and some doors

and some windows, but there's
a whole lot of character

that comes in this space
as well.

It's really a lot of
reused pieces, new pieces,

colour, collectibles, antiques.

And we also included
a lot of things

that are Michael and Karen's.

Because we really want it to be
an expression of them as well.

Because this is where they're
gonna be bringing guests.

So it's an important thing that

it really showcases
their personality as well.

There's definitely
a real mermaid presence

in the stage here,
starting with

the custom-painted
mermaid on the door.

I also wanted to bring
the mermaids

inside the mermaid brackets

and little mermaid
sitting on the windowsill,

along with a lot of
other nautical

and fishing pieces as well.

So really, the design of
this fishing stage was

we want it to look like it's
always been here, in a way.

We don't want it
to look brand new.

So the three windows here
in the fishing stage,

they came out of
an old fisheries union building

in a community nearby.

So Michael was very happy
to scoop those up.

It's just fun to use
what you have

and use it
in a different way.

For example, the ceiling
of the fishing stage.

We could have used
brand-new board,

but Michael had old pallet wood
in his garage.

And it adds a little bit of
interesting character as well.

So the table that we have
in this space,

we need to have a table
where people can, you know,

play cards or have a bite to eat
or something like that.

So what we decided to do was
have a custom fold down table

that can move out of the way.
But we didn't just build

a new table, we used a door that
actually came out of the house

that Karen and Michael live in.

So we were able to take it,
sand it down.

For the legs, what we did was
we added the legs of

a headboard from an old bed
that was also in the home.

And then, so the two
double doors,

those are old doors that came
out of the house as well.

So we just sanded those down
and painted those

a fun red on the exterior,

and then a warm white
on the interior.

There's definitely
a sense of pride

and a sense of remembering
the traditional roots

of what a fishing stage
is all about.

And I'm really excited to see
Karen and Michael's reaction.

This was a tangly
project right from the start,

but hey, it's all done,
laid in place, looking great.

So now it's time
to show the homeowners.

In New Perlican,

the last part of
this waterside job is finished,

and I can't wait for Karen
and Michael to see it.

This was a tangly project
right from the start,

trying to do the cribbing
under the house,

getting the wharf here, even
getting the stage in place.

We stuck to the 100,000-dollar
budget and...

we beat the winter freeze.

But hey, it's all done,
laid in place, looking great.

So now it's time
to show the homeowners.

Let's go get 'em.

since we moved and
it's been long enough.

We kinda built
this structure

kinda like an old stage.
We framed it up,

and then the clapboard on
the outside is actually

the inside board,
painted the white colour.

You wanted that feel of
still the old stage.

And it is. It truly is.

And I know you had
a lot of old stuff

like them windows.
They're from
the SUF lodge in Winterton.

They called us
and asked us if
we wanted the windows.

And that was the perfect place
to put them.

These doors would've
come out of the house

and it's so wonderful
to see them here

instead of up in
a back building.

And this table
actually folds down,

so these legs was
the old bed that you found,

they fold in and
the table folds down.

I love that idea because
it'll certainly give us space,

and this door came out
of the original house.

That's what
we're all about,

repurposing, reusing
and not throwing it out.

And you guys brought us
the palette board,

and that looks lovely
on the ceilings.

I love it.

It kind of matches
the colours on the outside.

This is a colourful stage.
Yes it is.

There's a lot to see.
It's gorgeous.

I just can't stop
looking around.

Everything in here
is just about perfect.

We made your house

I don't think there's
any one part that's favoured.

I think it's that whole package
is just incredible.

The gables are gorgeous
on the stage, the colours,

right down to the smallest
little pieces.

It's just so put together,
I just love it.

I'm really happy that
we stuck with the mermaid theme,

it really ties everything that
we have together,

and we've got quite a strong
mermaid presence now.

And it's fun to touch on that.

it's an 8 by 10 structure
that could be built anywhere.

You could have one of these
in the mountains,

you could have one of these
in the backyard

for a guest to stay at,
it's un-serviced.

It's just four walls and
a couple of doors

and some windows,
but it also comes

with a whole lot of character.

Reused pieces, new pieces,
colour, collectibles, antiques,

and a lot of soul
went into this.
