on the end of the wharf.

I'm Randy Spracklin.
Third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander!

My team and I are building
on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing!

We fight the elements
year-round to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it.

It's a catty day
in Brigus.

Not only is our big job
on Irish Town Road going well,

Grady's off school today,
so he's hanging with me.

Checkin' in on the job site,
see how it's goin'.

We're diggin' it out
for the addition.

Build the addition
is gonna be nine feet out

and then a little bit of a deck.

This 60-year-old family home
was also the village store

back in the day,

but now it's going through
a major upgrade

for the whole family to enjoy.

We're building onto the back,

for a larger dining room.

It'll be open concept
with new custom kitchen

and a living room at the front.

On the side where the old store
used to be,

we're adding a new main
bedroom,

walk-in closet and ensuite.

The whole main floor
will be wheelchair accessible.

The demo went well.

Easy boy. You're old.

Someone else back there?

And the beam installs
for the open floor plan

and dining room bump out
is done.

Now we're digging
for the foundation.

We gotta dig down four feet,

pour the walls, then we can
finish pourin' all the floor.

Big concern was actually
hitting cliff,

but it seems like
it's only big rock, so...

so far, so good.

But I'm not gonna count
my chickens

before they're hatched.

My number one helper today
is Grady.

Workin'. He's takin' notes.

What we discovered in there.

No cliff, just big rock.

You know, they'll be
at that the rest of the week.

And then we gotta get
the foundation crew in,

get that poured.

Lookin' good so far,

but still got
a long way to go.

While me and Grady
supervise the big dig...

the old man is scoping out
our next project,

which is very different!

He sent me because
he didn't want to come!

He sent me 'cause
he's really busy, I guess,

and he said this was
a nice, easy project

for me to look after.

He's down in New Perlican,

about an hour north of Brigus,
right on the ocean.

New Perlican is a small
community, around 200 people.

Everyone knows everyone.

And that's the way it is
in a lot of these small towns.

every place in Newfoundland
is cool, but what's so cool

about this place
it's like 20-odd stages here,

which really is picturous

and super colourful
around here, for sure.

A stage is basically a shed
on top of a wharf

used to store your
fishing gear.

But it's also like a gate
to get to your boat.

It's an iconic look
and structure.

A lot of old places,
stages and houses

were supported by pillars
and hung over the water.

In Battle Harbour, we seen
a lot of this underneath

the old stages and the wharfs.

So it's unique
to all Newfoundland, Labrador,

and also in Fogo.

So for this job,
we're building a stage

for Karen and Michael,
and they want it to stand out!

But first we need
to build a wharf.

They used to have
a wharf here.

And according to
what they're saying,

it all got taken out to sea
in Snowmageddon.

So it...
there's no more wharf.

I think the wharf
is probably the easiest part

of this whole job.

He's right.
Building on water isn't hard,

but if we don't time it right,

we'll be building under water
for the next part.

This house is probably
a little over 100 years old.

Part of the structure
is on stilts and cribbing.

The cribbing and the stilts
are in dire need of repair.

It's a unique build.
It's only found in Newfoundland

and over the water
is something I never expected

to be living on.
And it's just different

and funky and cool.

And it just... we like it.

The stilts is a very
unique look.

Not a lotta stilts
in the area,

although you will find
some in some other outports.

But we're the only stilted
crowd around, really.

This place is 100 plus years,
and they used the...

the cribbing,
which is this stuff here,

and they also used pillars.

The purpose of it,
cribbing is built like a box

with some extra weight
with rocks into it,

lets the water flow
in and out through it,

holds the structure in place
and all the...

all the pillars,

well, they're just
fully supports,

holds up the structure.

This would have all
been done by hand.

Randy woulda hated it!

So the work under
the house starts by replacing

the rotten pillars
with brand new,

custom cribbing
and support beams.

Then we're building the wharf

using some large cribs
for the foundation

and some big ol' logs
with pressure-treated lumber
on the deck.

On top, we're building a stage
with one-of-a-kind features

inside and out.

We'll repurpose
windows and doors,

and add loads of colour
and really make it stand out,

but also fit in.

The total budget for this job
on the water is 100,000.

Generally, people are really
proud of their stages.

They keep them colourful
and they decorate them

with lobster pots and buoys...
- Netting...

...and netting and all kinds
of really cool things.

They call them funny names.
They're great. I mean,

it'd be really nice to have
a nice funky stage here, too.

We love challenging
and creative projects,

but we've got to
get it all done
before the weather turns.

For one thing,
this'll be all ice.

So just no way to do it.

Plus, I'm steppin'
in the water here now.

It's pretty cold already,
so I definitely don't want to be
doin' it in the winter.

The biggest challenge with
this one here now is gonna be
a couple things.

One is gonna be the tides.
That's gonna work against us.

So try to do all our work
at low tide, of course.

And the other one we need
to prop this up while

we're doin' all
the construction underneath.

The reason they don't close in
these buildings

is for the dampness purpose,

'cause you want to keep
the air flowing through.

So then when the water comes up
and water goes out,

you wanna keep the air goin'
through, so it dries it all.

So you know, this is the type
of place that you don't close in
and want a basement.

Yeah, so Randy give me
a little camera and he said,

"Make sure you gets me
some pictures."

Notice a lot of these pillars
in here even weigh more

than the ones on the outside.

Back here looks like it's gonna
be a bit of a problem.

It's gonna add to the job,
for sure.

They got some concrete
pillars done years ago,

with buckets by the look of it,
'cause the shape of the bucket's

still there. But the concrete's
startin' to deteriorate.

Plus we got a...
a rock wall that's back here

to contend with. So...

it's a little more than
Randy probably was thinking,

but it's something
we can get done.

And something we will get done.

No job scares you away,
but it adds to the stress level.

We probably got a four-hour
window for the tides
goin' in and out.

Luckily, not a lot
of ice comes in here,

but when it does, you can
always see a little shift.

And the neighbours are always
on the lookout

so we don't end up
in the water.

We don't wanna
end up in the water.

In Brigus,
the Irish Town project
is motoring along.

The foundations for
the bump-out and new bedroom
addition are dug out.

Now Todd and his crew
can set the forms

for the foundation walls.

It's a little bit
of challenge. When you're
working with all houses

outta square and you're tryin'
to get the foundation regular

and square with the house,
you got to try to work

with the whole house.

With a little bit
of complication there,

but we got it figured out.

Everything is step
by step by step.

Yesterday, we come
and done a footing,

we poured the footing.

We come and do the walls,
we poured the walls today.

Randy's given us today
to get it done.

That's okay. Yeah, that's fine.

So we try to do it
in two to three hours.

You know what I'm saying?

I always has fun at this.

You got to.

If you don't have fun at this,
you'll be some contrary.

I'll tell ya.

Just over
in North River...

we're deep into the second
phase of a big project

for Sasha's long-time
family friends,

Nancy and her brother, Tommy.

Oh, just look.

They loved phase one,

the new custom gazebo
off the existing deck.

Oh, this is unreal.

Oh, look at the cushions

and the benches, Randy, Randy!

But that's put the pressure
on for the final stretch:

a new kitchen and a refresh
of their main floor washroom.

Starting to look
better already.

We're keeping the footprint
of the washroom

and the red tub to save money,

but giving the rest
of the space a full update.

In the kitchen,
it's a huge change!

It'll have all new cabinets,
counters, flooring,

and a bump out will add
more space

for appliances
and more cabinets.

But a special feature
is the breakfast bar

with a big window.

You can enjoy
your morning coffee

and a great view of the river.

Ah... looks so good!

Wow, what a transformation.

I'm here at North River today,
and we have pretty
much everything done.

The plumbing is done,
the electrical is done,

the team is really
moving quickly.

I just have to go
through the design finishes

and make sure everything
is ready now

for Randy and their team.

They're gonna love this.
Like, look at this view.

It's... it's so beautiful.
And the great thing

is we have the coffee bar
over here,

so you go from your really fancy
little coffee area
in the morning,

or in the evening if you want
to have an evening drink,

'cause the stove is right here,

it's somewhere
to sit and talk to people

if they're cooking.
So yeah, I'm really...

I'm really happy with this.

I feel really good about
the overall design.

I feel great about
how everything is moving along.

My biggest dilemma
is just making sure

that I choose
the right backsplash.

So we've got the base cabinet.

I like the stone
effect on this,

'cause it kinda ties it
into that kind of
country old feel,

but I don't like how stark
it is, and I think that's

gonna be an issue in the end.

So I'm leaning more towards
this softer,

little bit more creamier tile.

I think it might be
a little bit easier to clean,

as well,
which is extremely important.

If people looked at this
they would laugh

because they're like,
they're both just white

backsplashes, but they're not.

There's a difference in colour,
there's a difference in texture.

It's very important that
it all flows properly

for Tommy and his family.

This little champagney
bronze tone on top.

I think that's
gonna be the winner.

With all the jobs
on land under control,

I'm heading north to meet
the sub-contractor, Aaron,

to get started on the jobs
that are in the water!

We're in New Perlican today,
and hey, dock starts.

A lotta work. Well...

a lotta work
for Aaron and them.

This is for the wharf.

I knew Aaron...
well, he grew up in Brigus

just up over the hill.
You know, I knew his ol' man

and his brother and everything.
His ol' man is Byron,

so when I was on council,
he was the mayor there.

I knew Aaron, he helped out
in Harbour Pond.

He did the slipway out there.

That project turned out mint
and so will this one.

On shore, we're building up
the point with large rocks

for the start of the wharf.

In the water, we'll add
two large custom-built cribs,

and reuse rocks from the cribs
of the old wharf to anchor
them.

We'll join them together
with a few 18-inch-thick logs.

And that's what the b'ys'll
build the decking onto.

And when the wharf is done,
we'll add the stage

that we're gonna build
offsite at my shop.

So the cribs is actually
gonna be made out of six-by-six

pressure treated and then
we're gonna do a three-ply beam

that's gonna be like two-by-ten.
And then we gotta X-brace 'em

with two-by-six,
so it's a whole lotta lumber

and a lotta screwin'
and nailin'.

It's definitely a lot
of planning trying to get

some of 'em in place to get
the job done.

Plus, hey, we're dealin'
with the conditions.

This is an ocean.
It's not like a pond.

That ocean goes in and out
with the tides

and depending on the weather
and where the moon is too,

tides could be higher, lower.

So it's a lotta planning.

So we're gonna place
this crib.

We're gonna put our poles out
and get ready for decking.

Aaron's my son and we own
the business together.

The ol' man, he's not up
on this as much as I am.

So he... he tends
to listen sometimes,

but he got different ideas.

He don't stop much,
and he talks less,

and smiles less.

But he's... he's eager
in getting the project done

and there's no time
to be standin' around.

He's right down to business,
let's get at it and do it.

Randy and Scott and Aaron
and I are very, very similar,

you know, they've got
a very similar work ethic,

you know, Randy likes to do
stuff a little bit
different than Scott.

And boy, that's everywhere.

We gotta go out now
and ballast that crib

with the rock from
the old previous crib.

It all got to be hand-bombed
from one to the other,

make sure the crib
is stationary on the bottom

and solid and stuff like that.

Then there's a bit of X-bracing
and things of that nature

that gotta be done.

The end result is just as good,

sometimes maybe better.
But age is always honourable.

In Brigus,
the foundation walls

are set at Irish Town Road.

So it's time for the plumber,
Shawn,

to finalize the kitchen
plumbing

before the slab-on-grade
concrete floor goes in.

It'll be quite interesting.
There's a few little issues
here and there,

the older homes.

The walls are thinner,
the floor joists are thinner,

so we gotta give some careful
thought into our plumbing,

how to reroute our drain
so we're not compromising

the structure of the building,
as well.

She gotta go down my end.

Now we just gotta get
our plumbing done

and by the end of the day,
this'll be ready for concrete.

With the plumbing set,

Terry, Rick and their team
can pour the floor.

We're just pouring
a concrete floor
in Irishtown Road.

That wheelbarrow weighs
about 150 to 200.

Depends on the driver,
if they fill it up, right?

Some days are harder.

So by the end of the day,
you're pretty sore.

Across the way
in North River, it's a big day.

The floor in this kitchen
is done and tiled.

Harv and Uncle Al
got it all prepped

for just in time
for the cabinet install.

Sasha's chosen two colours,
cream for the uppers

and a fancy green
for the bottoms.

That's gotta be tree green,
or maybe it's moss?

Either way, it'll look mint,

and with the hardware
and the counters installed,

we'll be ready to do
the backsplash in no time.

An hour north,
in New Perlican...

it's a windy old day,

and the tide's coming up
on a really tough part

of this project. But...

This job has to be done.

Lookin' at them sticks,
probably ain't gonna last.

Another windstorm and a little
bit of ice,

their house turns
into a boathouse.

Right now, we've got
to take out another couple

of those beams that's holding up
the house and we gotta...

get our...

and we'll be able
to work from that.

This old house is held up
by dozens of old pillars

and some rotten old cribbing

that all needs to be replaced.

Our task is adding a dozen
new cribs under the house.

We'll build beams
and slide them on top of
the cribbing

to support the weight
of the home.

Aaron and his crew are back
and are starting at high tide,

so when it's time to go
under the house,

the water must be much lower.

Time is tight.

So, this old crib now
gotta come out and the...

for the new ones to go in.

You can't look in
the phone book and find someone

that does cribbing underneath
an old house

and build a wharf
or an old stage.

So you gotta know people.

That's one thing good about it
is we know Aaron

and, hey, he knows us.
It's a win-win.

Just like the wharf,
we're prebuilding the cribs

with pressure treated lumber
and are reusing rocks

for ballast so they
don't float away.

One thing about high tide,

it's easier to put the cribs
in place

until we can anchor them
in with more rocks.

The old cribbing was there,

but it wasn't doin' anything.

It never had any weight
of the house whatsoever.

The new one will...
we're gonna jack the house

just a little bit
and wedge in our beam

and we will have...
it'll hold the weight.

That's gonna be
the main beam goin' down

through the structure
to actually hold up the house.

An engineer drawed it up,
so it's a certain size of beam,

so many plies, and it gotta
run so many feet.

There's gonna be three beams

goin' underneath the house

and then there's cribbings
underneath the beams.

So they're just gonna lay
the beam,

then they're gonna put shims
into it

and call 'er good.
She'll settle.

We got to get this beam
up tight now to this log

and then we're going to put in
one more crib

and this beam is done.

Toughest beam is gonna be
the first one.

Once we get the first one in,
we know we got something solid,

so should be pretty
smooth sailing.

Finally back in Brigus,
finally Irishtown.

Foundation's in,
the floor's in,

and we gotta frame 'er up,
get ready for the roof.

We got Paul, we got Harv,
we got Nikki.

Rocks. Everywhere you goes
is rocks.

We got Michael.

We been waiting a little while.
This is their family home

and they're tryin' to figure out
what to do to the addition.

You know, there's windows
that they're tryin'
to figure out.

You know, is the sitting area,
is the bedroom.

It's better to wait,
get everything finalized,

make sure that you're movin'
forward the way you want to,

and then start buildin'.

Nikki got stuck
with the crap job again.

I does the work
Paul don't wanna do.

Nikki's takin' out the window.
That window gotta be

moved over probably like
a foot or so.

Right there now,
they wanna shift it

towards the outside wall.
So we gotta take it out,

reframe it,
then put it back in.

This'll put the window
in a more centred spot,

which is perfect
for the new layout.

All ready to take that
window out. I needs a hand.

- It just needs to be pushed.

Everything's let go
and I'm done.

goin' back in, right?

she once was.

She's come a long way.
But the thing is,

she still likes to ask
all the questions.

But she do know the answers.

But she just wants
confirmation to make sure

she's goin' in the right path
when you leave her alone.

He's still got patience
for me. That's all that matters.

After all these years,
he's still got patience for me.

She's comin' along.
So it only be a matter of time

now she won't even
wanna see me no more.

We've been delayed
waiting on some window

and door decisions,
but now we've got sign off,

and can start building
the addition and bump out
at the back.

We haven't done framin'
in a while.

It's a good day for it.

It definitely is a lot easier
to change it on paper

than it is actually wood.

So when you get it all framed up
and then you change your mind,

it's a lotta work
and a lotta money.

We just got another call
and another little tweak.

More tweaks, more changes.
That's construction.

The problem you're gonna have
is this distance right here.

The good thing is
we don't have it all framed up,

so it's easy to change.
Bad thing is we might need

to change material,
but you know...

you just take it as it goes
and you order more stuff
and you get it done.

That I could do an easy flip.

Homeowners is always nervous.
You know, this is
a big renovation.

There's a lotta money
they're puttin' into it.

They wanna make it right. But...

when they gotta think about it
a lot, that's a bad day.

Decisions.

It's like standin'
on the end of the wharf.

You either gotta jump in,

In Brigus,
some new changes to the design

by the homeowners won't affect
the overall footprint,

so we can still get 'er
framed up and stay on track.

'cause it freezes
and we need water to move.

over it and everything.

You know, we're a little bit

try to finish everything off,

I figured I'd lay a few tiles.

the cribbing is done,
the wharf is done,

bring on the next phase
of this project,

the stage!

We're gonna build it outside
the shop

to save on fuel costs
and travel time

back and forth to the job site,
which is an hour away.

It's a new build,
but Karen and Michael

want a lot of old-time flavour.

So we're repurposing
old windows, recycling doors,

adding a scallop-shake trim
detail for a cool feature,

and it'll have loads
of colour.

So I called in Sam
to raid the homeowners' shed

and find all the right pieces

so the whole project
ties together.

Wow! This is incredible!

When we moved here,
we discovered the older doors

and things that were
taken out of the house.

And we'd really like to see
those used instead

of just throwin' 'em out.

It's important for us
to re-use and recycle materials

we already have that are
very special, in the fact

that they are actual
artifacts or antiques.

They could be used
wonderfully in the stage.

This place I feel like
has been here

for a really long time.

It was probably used
to store animals at some point.

Now it's got all these
incredible pieces

and I don't even know
where to start.

Everything that I'm seeing,
like, even the smells,

it reminds me of like,
my childhood

visiting my great-uncle's
fishing stage.

It's reminding me
of my nan's house,

it's reminding me of my home
in Cape Royal,

it's just...
it's everything to me

that's special
about Newfoundland, really.

Traditionally, a fishing stage
is where you're, y'know,

getting everything ready
to go for a fish

and then when you bring
your fish back, is where

you're gutting your fish,
so it's very utilitarian.

But that's not what we're going
for with Karen and Michael!

They more so want it to be
a guest experience

for their BnB, so they want
it to be a place where maybe

you can have lunch, or you
can have a small get-together,

so more of a social place

than what it was
traditionally used for.

And there's so many
fishing stages here
in New Perlican itself,

and what I love about them all
is that they are all

brightly colour-painted,
so they really stand out

when you enter the bay
and they're beautiful.

These windows have to be used
in the stage,

and the green on this glass
is very inspiring to me.

I just see incorporating this
colour into the palette

of the whole stage
but also putting these windows

in the stage for sure.

I feel like everything
is going through my mind:

what Im' going to use,
where I'm going to use it,

how we're going to use it.
These fishing stages

are only small, you know,
they're not very big,

so I want to pick
all the right pieces

to incorporate into this design.

I love this storm door
back here,

and it looks like it could
probably tell a few stories,

along with everything
else in here.

It's a different design
experience for me for sure.

It's four walls
with some windows and a door,

but it's pretty compact

and there's a lot of ideas
that we want to incorporate,

so just how we're going
to bring that all together.

So Michael told me
that these windows

came from a community
called Winterton,

and actually, they came
from an old

fisheries union building,

they were just gonna be
thrown away.

So it's pretty incredible,
I'm really happy.

I feel like my mind is just like
running with ideas,

to be honest,
so I just need to like,

take a visual inventory
of everything that's here

and get some ideas
of what we're gonna use.

Got a lot to do, I have to pull
all of these ideas

that I have in my mind together
and make a plan,

and I also need to call Randy
and talk to him.

We have to get going on this!

We're here in North River
on the home stretch.

Got everything pretty well done,
other than plumbing

and a little bit of electrical.

It's all about the finer details
and that's what takes the time.

Shawn and them is back
to do the tub, the faucets,

then it's good to go.
Homeowners come in
and enjoy their space.

Are the wheels staying
on the wagon
or are they wobbly?

- Ah, they're on.

When you drop into
a job site with Shawn,

he likes to have a chat
just as much as me,

so usually when we stop
in there,

sometimes it takes a little bit
longer than it should.

I tell you something
I done years ago.

Ever see them uh, string art
with nails and the...?

- Yeah, yeah.
- I done them one time

back in the summer camp
years back when I was a kid.

That was pretty cool to do.

Mind the little short legs.

When you looked at the tub
first with the roughness of it,

it actually looked like
a real cast-iron tub.

Until you actually picked it up
and it happened to be

a fibreglass acrylic.

But we got a good joke
on the guys.

They got a kick out of it.

Cast-iron?!
You can see through it!

The sun got me!
She could see through it.

You gotta have that
relationship with your trades.

You know, basically,
I'll probably see them

more than I see Melissa.

So we have a lot
going on here today,

it's a big job,
it's my family friends,

I love these people,
a little bit too much for me

to take on by myself,
so it's so nice to have

Sam and Aisha here.
When really, I need to bring
my girl in on this

because I can't do it
on my own! So...

There's a lot of pressure
in this and as you can see,

there's so many details.
I don't think people realize

sometimes how many things
that you need to add to a space,

but without all these
little details,

it just falls flat;
it doesn't feel cozy,

so having the girls here
is making me feel so good,

but I absolutely love this job,

so this is just like hanging out
with my girlfriends,
to tell you the truth.

I think the homeowners
are going to be thrilled,

and it's gonna be
really beautiful.

What a transformation!

It's really come together
and I'm so, so excited
for them to see the space!

The kitchen is done
and we are so happy!

I can't get over the difference
of the functionality
in the kitchen.

Honestly, by blowing out
that wall,

putting in that extra
bit of cabinetry, it's unreal.

And then the cabinetry
is a dark green on the base

and then a little bit
of a lighter, kind of like
a beige green on the top,

and because of that,
I really wanted to add in

some softness by
bringing in that kind of
champagne-bronze hardware.

And it wasn't even like a brass,
it couldn't be that.

I was very particular
on the tone with it.

It's actually called
"champagne bronze."

It gives a bit of a vintage feel
because we wanted to bring it

back to a little bit
of a cabin vibe.

It's an older home.

And it kind of gives it that,

I don't know, a little bit
of a glow.

The wood features
in the kitchen

are actually a huge element

and it energizes it,
brightens it up,

and then it connects it again
to the wood

inside the cabin.

We wanted to keep
the countertops nice
and light and fresh,

so when I did it, I was like,

I want to have the brick
because the warmth,

the warm brown tones
with the green and the white,

its just a natural feel.

You chose well.

The favourite feature I think
for me in this whole space

is actually the breakfast
nook over there.

Get that ready in the morning
and then sit over

and look out the window,
I mean, that view,

it starts your day.

- Yeah!
- Taking in that view

and enjoying the outside.
- Mm-hmm.

The bathroom for me, I think
it was just the most fun for me.

It was um, when I got
that red tub,

the first thing I thought of
was I want it to be

happy and bright,
and feel good.

The tub is the room.
Everything in that room

is designed around that tub.

All the plumbing is so old
in that tub,

had to get adjustable pieces

that were able to move
to fit the side.

It was very unique.
And then I think it's just

so special
because it's their mom's tub,

it's something they really
wanted to keep.

Doing the wainscotting
halfway up,

that's a little bit
of detail which changes it up.

That added a ledge around
the room, which is really nice.

Yeah, I wanted a ledge
because I think a ledge again

is a little something different,

it's somewhere to
place your things on.

I love that you didn't
shy away from colour,

even though there was a red tub.

You can put
those two colours together

and they work really
nicely together.

It was really important,
we actually thought
about all that that,

like the artwork,
put in there with the red tub,

the colour of the red
in the puffins,

and the picture plant,
and bringing in Newfoundland,

that's all Newfoundland themed,
and then the light,

actually, was a nice soft,
again, wood tone.

I'm all about bringing in
as many textures as you can

but keeping it in a simple way.

Overall, the bathroom
just feels fun,

and we've definitely
listened to everything

that they wanted,
and I'm really happy

to be a part of this.
Tommy's been a big
part of my life.

He was my... when I first
started my first company,

Tommy's my lawyer,
and I remember him saying,

"One of these days, you're gonna
design something for me!"

And here we are.
So I mean, it really worked out,

and I'm very happy
to be doing it for them

and having Sam helping me do it.

Thanks for letting me

Phase one is done.
The homeowners love it.

This project was pretty big.
It had phase one, was outside.

Phase two was inside.

And the budget to do it all
came in at 150,000.

We had a kitchen,
we had a washroom.

Phase one is done.
The homeowners love it.

But when you look at it now,

it's so expansive.

And behind the walls,
everything was upgraded,

from plumbing to electrical,

it just makes everything
energy efficient.

Rhonda can have
her cup of tea.

Adding them two windows
added a whole lotta light.

the space so open for...

You know, you have the kids
over, the grandchildren,

and it's gonna be gorgeous.
I can't wait.

And that was the thing
when we did this,

you wanted to actually
take the light in,

but you wanted to enjoy
that view. Like...

But like you said,
it looks smaller on the outside

and when you come in,
it's so expansive

because, you know,
it goes right back.

It's perfect.

And you got this lovely bar.
'Cause this is where

the fridge used to be.
- Just mind the fridge here!

Just walk around
the fridge!

And now you created
more cabinet space,

you got a little mini fridge.
Well, we still got a fridge,

but it's...
not in the way anymore.

Wine fridge
and a mini fridge.

Oh, that is beautiful.

It was just remarkable
that such a small addition

could make that big
of a difference.

It was... we weren't expecting
that at all, were we?

I guess the windows.

You know, the windows aren't
the whole wall.

They're just nice,
they fit in neat,

but they encompass
the the whole river.

So you got...
you have a view plane

from one corner of the house
now to the other.

As soon as you came in,
you could just see the kids,

their spouses, the grand--
new grandchildren.

We could just...
I could just vision

so much wonderful
family times here.

One more addition

We were using it
as a takeout window

when we were renovating.

We even gave you a bath tray
