I'm Randy Spracklin.
Third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander!

My team and I are building
on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing!

We fight the elements
year-round to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it.

Here in Newfoundland,
when the weather's good,
we're outside!

Any why not?
There's so much to see and do.

And if I can take on some
outside jobs, even better!

That's why I'm so excited
about this next project
we're about to start.

Mobile is a place,
you know, a little over
a hundred people.

It's about an hour
outside St. John's.

A little bit.
And people come here, you know,

watch the puffins,
watch the whales.

But it's also known
for the song, Mobile Goat.

Probably come look
at chickens now.

That's what it's gonna
be known for.

The Luxury Chicken Hotel!

And these chickens
are going to live large

on this prime piece
of ocean side real estate

with a five-star view!

I'm meeting the homeowners
Russ and Lynette
to finalize the plans.

So this is where you're plannin'
on puttin' the chicken coop?

Yeah. When, when we uh,
first acquired the property,

it was a vegetable garden,
by the looks of it.

And he thought he'd give
a hand at it but he got outvoted

because I've been wantin'
chickens for a few years now.

So I win.

I met Lynette in Toronto
in 1988.

We were married in 1989,
in Newfoundland, in St. John's.

And I promised Lynette's mom
that day that I would

bring her back one day.
It took, me 33 years,

but we decided to spend
our retirement years

and the rest
of our life on the island.

I've been wanting
a chicken coop for a good two,
three years now.

And when we got down here
and stepped foot on the property

that we now live on,
I saw chicken coop
all over the area.

In the beginning,
I thought about maybe saltbox,

you know, your typical
biscuit box home, or whatever.

And then it was suggested,
why wouldn't you do

a fishing stage? As soon
as somebody suggested that,

I knew that's exactly
what needs to be here.

because apparently,
they're starting to, you know,

fade away.

I would say, you know,
a good access point

will be right around
the middle here,

so it's not too much
to come all the way down

to access the inside
of the coop for myself.

And that's the important
part for Lynette,

that she has access to the coop.
The important part for me

is I want the chickens to have
a great view of the ocean.

So... the front part,

make sure they got a great view.
- There you go.

Absolutely.

This chicken coop
is gonna look like an old
stage,

so it's actually gonna sit on
sticks raised off the ground

about three feet, and then
we're gonna frame it up
like a house.

All wooden structure
with clapboard on the outside

and then its gonna have
a nice little caged in ramp,

shingled roof.

So they'll have lots of space
outside to run around,

and inside they can hang out
and just roost!

This is a luxury chicken coop.

You know, we got a budget
of 40 grand

and we only got a month.
Just hopin' nothing runs a-fowl!

I'm gonna have to do
a little bit of research
for the chickens.

I know nothing about 'em.
Not a thing.

Other than make food out
of the stuff they lay, or...

themselves.

Knowing nothing about chickens
and building a chicken coop

doesn't sound like
a good formula...

Oh, well, hey, we knows
how to build a house,

so we're gonna build it
like a house.

That's why it's gonna be luxury.

- Perfect.
- It's gonna be like a mansion.

Yeah.

Next thing is actually
get a placement,

find out where we're gonna
lay it at and then

bring in the excavator,
bring in the fill
and start buildin'.

From what I know about Randy,
he likes challenges

and he likes unique projects.

What is more unique
and what is more challenging

than a luxury
chicken coop hotel?

Coming back here
and moving back home

to Newfoundland
was a no-brainer,

having Randy do it,
because he's able to envision,

you know, everything
that I came home for.

The Mobile chicken coop
ain't our only big job.

Outside Brigus, in North River,

we've got two major projects
on the same property,

for Tommy and his sister Nancy.

I love this place.
I mean, these are very dear

family friends of mine
and my family

so I can't wait for you
to take on this project with me.

On one side of the house,
we're expanding the kitchen

with a new bump out
that we've got all framed up.

On the other side of the house,

we're building a custom gazebo,
with enough space

for their large family.

It'll have bench seating,
a fire pit,

and killer views
of the river.

The eight foundation posts
are in,

so it's ready to frame up.
My right-hand man

and new dad Paul

is teaching the newbie Holly
and Michael how to do it.

Gonna be a good day today.

Robert slept well last night.

The octagon gazebo
just isn't the typical

square box frame up.
It's a little more layout,

a little more mass.

Just gotta remember
everything now.

It's been a while
since I framed one. I think

last one I done
was out to Gushue's.

I'm not the only one
with a little bit
of a challenge today.

They're gonna be challenged too.

I don't think Holly's ever
seen a gazebo framed.

And I don't think
Michael have, either.

They're just gonna have
to pay a lot of attention,

be extra careful and it'll
all come together good.

You're not plumb.
Your saddles won't sink,

your posts will be crooked.
Now's your chance to adjust

if you're not right.
- To my eye right here,

I would say this is straight.
- Give 'er.

I don't mind bein' the teacher,
as long as everyone

wants to listen
and pay attention and...

all the time in the world.

Things are movin' along.
It's taking a little bit
longer than expected.

But you gotta get it square,
you gotta get it right. So...

there's a lotta work
to this gazebo.

Once we gets this deck on,
now it'll be smooth sailing.

Rain's starting, so we'll
be packed up for the day.

It's all coming together.
It's all starting out

nice and straight, square.
So it should follow through

nice and smooth.

So we're out in Mobile
today getting ready

to start digging,
getting the foundation,

getting ready
for the big chicken coop.

We gotta limb some trees,
take some branches off...

just trim 'em up.

Whatever the boss
wants me to do, I gotta cut...

learn how to cut down trees, apparently.

Run around, keep Randy happy.

That's a hard job in itself.

Nikki told me this morning
she never used
a chainsaw before,

so that's gonna be fun.

The new coop is going
where the old potato garden
was.

We're going to create
a path to the coop,

but first we have
to clear some trees.

He wants the job done today,
not next week, see.

You wanna try it?

So it's uphill
and then downhill.

Just don't cut yourself.

As long as she don't hit rocks,
we're... we're A-okay.

It's actually pretty fun
when you gets
goin' at it, though.

Now I go get
my Christmas tree.

a clear path to the coop area,

on the old fence.

I've got my crew
stretched across the Avalon

with two very different
outdoor projects.

In North River, we're building
a gazebo with custom features
inside and out.

The homeowners want to use it
before the weather turns,

so the pressure's on
to get'er done.

And on the other side
of the Avalon,

we've got an outdoor project
that's a first for me!

We're in Mobile today
and we're getting ready

to put in the sticks
that's gonna be the foundation
for the chicken coop.

Al skinned the bark off
some old logs

to give it that old-time feel,

and Al and Harv prebuilt
the base for the floor.

Now it's Paul
and Michael's turn.

This is the first time
the b'ys been on site,

so I wanna make sure...
looks just right

and then I'll head off
to the other jobsite.

The base will sit on top
of the skinned logs,

we call 'em sticks,

that will be cemented in place

to look like the bottom
of an ole

Newfoundland fishing stage.

The coop will sit on top
of this foundation.

We'll add a ramp,
fence, a whole lot of colour,

and finish it off
with a proper pathway.

We'll start buildin'
the structure off site,

get the floor done, the walls.

We're just gonna use a boom
truck and lay it in place.

Done deal.
- Lay 'er in.

This is not your
standard foundation.

Standard, I suppose, back
in the day when you're doing

like a fishing stage
or something like that.

It's like sticks. That's what's
gonna keep the structure up

outta the ground. The only thing
we're doin' different,

we're puttin' concrete in.

There gotta be a bunch.

It gotta look like a stage.

Probably six each corner.

In the middle, you know,
probably have them a little bit
like this,

a little like that.

And then we'll pour
a foot of concrete.

I've never really built
a chicken coop in my career,

so you know, it's basically
like any small outbuilding,

like a shed or anything.

Just wingin' it.

So I gotta put three posts down
each side for burying,

and I gotta whack the rest in
at some weird angles,

just make it look catty.

Just give 'er.
You're doin' great.

The foundation for this build
is a little unique.

Just give it a little bit
of Newfoundland twist and theme.

We're gonna try and make it
look like a landlocked
fishing stage.

I'm gonna give Paul creative
freedom how to put the sticks.

Still, I'll wanna look at it.

He's definitely good
at building.

The design part? Eh...

Ah, that's deadly,
buddy. Deadly.

Notice how I'm not
left yet, so...

I wouldn't put it too much
on an angle like that, Paul.

- This is only temporary.
- Oh, really.

Randy left me with,
you know,

a little bit of creative time
to lay the sticks out.

Only thing is when I was
puttin' on my temporary brace

he said, "Not that much angle!"

Just to keep it
from fallin' over.

Like... I'm like,
"Randy, it's a brace. Relax."

That's good.

Save that for me wood stove.

That's not a true piece
of lumber that you buy

at a lumberyard. It takes
a little bit of an eye

to make sure that the sticks
are straight and plumb.

And you're just takin'
a best guess and your eye

is the main thing,
and you get the floor on top
nice and level.

Anyway, I think I got it
in pretty good.

Randy, you happy
with the creative vision

there now on them angles?

Oh, it's all lookin' good.

That looks good.

So we're gonna
bring in concrete,

'cause we want this chicken coop
not to be all wobbly

and, you know,
movin' in the wind.

So we're gonna
pour the concrete,

then we'll backfill it,

then we're ready to build
the structure

and lay it in place.

Everything went smooth,
no trouble, no mess.

Couldn't ask for a better pour.

Level it off roughly.
It don't have to be perfect,

'cause we're gonna bury it all.

And got all the gear packed
in the truck.

Just make sure
it's all tied on.

We're goin' for fish 'n' chips.

Back in North River,
the natural finish on the
gazebo

is fitting perfectly
with the surrounding trees.

To complete the natural look,

the crew needs to install
hundreds of untreated

cedar shakes on the skirt,
the roof, and the cooper up
top.

So today, we're down
in beautiful North River.

My hometown. And we got myself,
Holly and Al.

So the last day
I worked at the gazebo

it was piss-pouring rain.

We were mucky and dirty.

We had to stay
to get the tubes in.

That's comin' a long way
since then.

Paul and Holly have put
a lot of work into it.
It's startin' to look good.

I don't know how long
we've been here anymore.

What is this, our third week?

I think it's
our third week.

So the goal for today
is Holly and Al's

gonna try to bang on
some cedar shakes.

Cedar shakes is a fun job,
but this amount cedar shakes

is probably like 25 bundles
of cedar shakes to go on.

Monotonous.

I've worked
with cedar shakes before.

It's a lot of fun,
it's just tedious work.

but it's enjoyable.
You're in your groove.

It's nice to come here
in the woods and just relax

and pound on some cedar shakes.

I'm gonna go up top on the roof,
of course, and try to get

some soffit closed
on the coupler.

Cooper!

, who cares,
I'm on the roof.

So bein' an octagon
and all, the eight sides
is a bit of a trick.

You always got your 22
and a half.

You have to do a lot
of miter cuts.

So it's time consuming,
but it's pretty cool.

Not everybody can do an octagon,

so I'm trusted to do an octagon.

My confidence level
is slowly creeping.

Two years in
and I'm feelin' pretty good.

Next thing I'll be a JP,
journey person. Look out.

Cedar shakes
are pretty common,

so normally you do
a one-third exposure,

so we're going with
a five-inch exposure.

Staggered design, which is
a half-inch stagger up and down.

But it also matches in
with his cabin, too,

which is done with shakes.

And that's Randy's
favourite look.

So keep the big guy happy.
Keep the customer happy.

Havin' a shake party up here.

Yeah, you're shakin' in fear.

One shake at a time.

Today we're back in Mobile

and I got Nikki with me.
We gotta put in a few

extra posts in the chicken coop.

They are gonna carry
a little bit of weight,

but they're more for decoration,
the look of, you know,

an old fishing stage.
Then we gotta backfill
all the sticks.

That's what's gonna keep
the structure up
outta the ground.

It's the creative part.

Tryin' to figure out,
make it look like an old stage.

I want it to have
that old rickety look,

like it was built
back in the day.

It won't be on the water,
but I want it to look
like it belongs there.

Nobody got the vision
like Spracklin got the vision.

That's all it comes down to.

You're the only one who
got this in your head, buddy.

And then one right here,

between these two strappings.

I think that'll fill the gap.

Then we can chop
off some of them.

white spots on it,
you know, nice and greyed.

that one rock

that's in the woods
to make it look pretty.

It's all about the look,
you know? Just not only
for the place,

but the outside, too.
Needs to kinda have a good feel.

They got big rocks
up in the driveway.

So just addin', keepin' to it.

It'll go to the look.

Labrador, here we come!

Takin' Randy here
on a little trip to Labrador

where he haven't been
there before.

So... should be a good time.

I haven't been to Labrador.
Heard a lot about it,

but I haven't set my feet there.
So first time.

I think the team got it.

We got all the projects
figured out.

And I heard there's no
cell service, so I hope
there's no trouble.

That's right. Sometimes
it's good without a phone.

Definitely, I betcha,
when I get back in cell range,

it's probably gonna be
"ding, ding, ding, ding..."

I'm sure.

Next stop, Labrador.

But to get there,
we're flying from St. John's,

to Gander,
to Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

So we arrived here anyway.
- Yes.

You probably knows this place
a lot better

than me after being here, so...
- Quite a bit better.

You'll be the person
on the map.

I'll drive and we'll make it
to Battle Harbour.

Now we have to drive five hours
to Mary's Harbour,

catch a ferry and travel
another hour

to this very remote island,
Battle Harbour!

So we're on the road.

Uh... not so much.

- No?
- Your six songs. No.

Made it.
Not there yet, though.

Yeah, that's the ferry.

Probably once a schooner,
now a ferry.

All aboard.

Battle Harbour was the hub
of the fishery back in the day,

and once the salt fish
capital of the world.

It was booming in the
19th and early 20th century.

This was a fishing community
pretty much.

Fishing was their livelihood.

The fishery kinda
ended in '92,

but before this, Battle Harbour
was a booming place.

And once the fishing
was down, well,

everybody moved to the mainland.

So no one lives
there full time.

Basically it's from
spring 'til fall,

and then place shuts down,

wintertime comes,
and the ice comes,

you got polar bears.

Polar bears wanna get inside,
they'll break stuff.

And just the wear and tear.
So you gotta come back
and fix it all.

Vandals, them polar bears!

And now it's a massive
restoration project

where old buildings
have been brought back to life.

Preserving history is what
me and the old man love,

so we're excited to pick up
inspiration

for our projects back home.

Battle Harbour is pretty
amazing. The place itself.

But you can see
the whales go by,

sea lions,
might see an iceberg.

Every building that's here
was here. Right from...

I would say.

Over the past 20 years,
a lot of hard work

has been done restoring
these buildings.

And there's still more to save.

It's living history,
which is what we love.

It's awesome.
I like the church.

The church has needed,
you know, a lot of repair.

It was almost to the point
of actually gonna collapse.

So they all got together
and fixed the church

and then onwards and onwards
and onwards.

Old shed.

Look at the old house
on top of that hill.

Oh, yeah,
that's pretty cool.

They've restored about
20 buildings

and still a lot of work to do.

It's... it's awesome.

Made it.
Place is pretty deadly.

For me it's really special.

When I was 12 years old,
I actually come down

in the coastal boat
and this was one of the stops.

So to see it then and now...
not that I can remember

a lot since I was 12,
but it's good feeling.

My only coastal boat when
I was 12 was a rubber dinghy.

Didn't come
to Battle Harbour.

Way up north
in Labrador,

me and the old man
are on a research trip,

visiting the restored fishing
village of Battle Harbour.

Getting here was the first
adventure,

and our next
is gonna get chilly!

Today we're gonna see
the iceberg.

How you makin' out, Tony?
- How you doin'?

Icebergs only come
one time a year.

So if you can get out
to see one, definitely.

Father-son takin' off
for a trip, no one else. It...

It's a plus.

My god, look.
Sun is shining.

We're goin' out
through the tickle.

Right through the tickle.

Tickle is any body of water

that got a piece
of land on both sides.

Pretty cool.
The whales come right through.

Definitely this time of year.
Probably after the capelin.

You know, icebergs been around
for thousands of years.

Thing about it is you take
little chunks of it,

drop it in your drink,
lasts the whole night.

Don't matter how hot it is.

Newfoundland gets a few
icebergs, though Labrador
is the home of them.

Basically, it's only
a little ways away,

and they'll crack off
and then they'll come
to Labrador first,

Newfoundland second.

- Yup.
- Drinks third.

Just don't eat yellow iceberg.
It's dinosaur pee.

Iceberg.

Not a big one,
but a nice one.

Look at the water
meltin' off it like anything.

Yes.

Look, that's the iceberg
right there.

Right down underneath us.

This is pretty cool,
but it's not how it's big...

like right underneath
that is massive,

so you don't want
to get too close.

- No.
- If it do roll over,

we might roll over.

It's not like it's gonna
give you a little warning.

It's just gonna go
and next thing you know,

hit the boat and we'll go.

We haven't seen icebergs,
probably,

in the past four years
down in Brigus,

so this is pretty cool to...
- I'd say longer.

Yeah, probably
even longer.

It's one of those things,
you know,

you might see,
'em you might not.

But when you do,
it's pretty cool.

It's one big glacier,
cracked off,

floatin' down here
and eventually it'll melt

in someone's drink,
or in the ocean.

You know, being cut off
is definitely nice.

But always in the back
of your mind,

"What's goin' on in Brigus,

what's goin' on on all
the other job sites?"

It might be cold as ice
in Labrador,

but back down in Newfoundland,

Paul and the crew
are working through a scorcher

in North River
to finish the cedar shakes

on the new gazebo roof.

Today, we got Nikki and Holly
up on top

and Al and Michael's down
clueing off few

of the odds and ends
on the bottom.

Hopefully, on our last day
of cedar shakes.

So it's shaping up well.

We're getting close to the end
and she's narrowin' in.

Installin' cedar shakes
is very labour intensive.

It takes a lot of time
and patience and...

to get it done and
get it done correctly.

But main thing is
to stay focused,

because it's not every day
you get to do a full cedar roof.

It's a rarity.
So... it's kind of a luxury.

Bein' at the cedar shakes
for so long is enjoyable.

I'm almost sad
that it's gonna be over.
I've really enjoyed it.

It's monotonous
and it's tedious,

but you're in your zone. Like we
could be here for an hour

and nobody's even talking.
Everybody's just doin'
their own thing.

Just enjoyable.

Hey, you can't really
complain about work today.

Sure, look where we are.

What a picturesque view.

You got the hills
in the background, on the river,

sun's shinin'.

Real rare sight.

Oh-ho, bite me.

My only complaint
with the cedar shakes

is when you're doin'
an octagon roof,
it's a lotta cuts.

So you're used to seein' us
in a lot of the more

miserable Newfoundland seasons,
like the rain, the snow,

the wind. But we're gettin'
a little bit of a treat

here on this project and we're
gettin' some sunny weather,

some blue skies.

But all this hot weather
is challenging.

You know. You still
gotta stay hydrated,

make sure you're drinkin'
enough water.

And it can add a lot
of fatigue to you, as well.

You know what?
This is too hot today.

Back in Labrador,

me and the old man are checking
out the restored

fishing village
of Battle Harbour.

It's an island,
so the only way to get here
is powerboat ride,

ferry ride and... you're kinda
away from everybody.

It's very remote.

There's no cell service,
no power lines,

it's a living museum
and more of a tourist place

than a fishing town now, but...

Back in the day, you know,
it was people that came

from Newfoundland,
got dropped off here,

they fished the whole summer,
and they went back
in the wintertime.

And then there was people
that lived here.

- Fox went by.
- They live heres...

Fox went by.
He just ran down there.

We love saving old buildings
back home,

so this is a perfect way
to see how the history

of this island's been preserved.

Pretty cool spot.

Yes. Amazing how
they build it all up.

I know, what? Build them
houses with hand tools.

How 'bout you try
that next project? No power.

Mmm... No.

Oldest building

Pretty cool, huh?

And how they build them beams.

Well, they put the knowledge
of shipbuilding

into this construction
of actual buildings,

using the knees
actually for support.

And the old barrels.
Kept the molasses into.

Even though this
is only a vacation,

there's still lots to learn
from what was done years ago

and how it's all put together.

Oh, definitely.
It's like the way they actually

used the keel of the boat
to hold up the beams.

Look, the old-timers built this
here hundreds of years ago
and it's lasted.

I'm sure there's little
unique things

that we can bring back
and use 'em on a project.

Where we gonna go now?
- That's pretty amazing.

We'll go around
and look at the salt shed.

Quite a few pillars
under there.

I'd say there's over
a thousand to take
all that weight.

The structure is similar
to how we're building
the chicken coop foundation,

except we're using
a lot less pillars.

And a lot less salt!

Back in the day,
this place was filled to the
max

with salt to preserve the fish.

No wonder there's
so many pillars!

Old salt shed.

Yeah, I know.
Pretty amazing, huh?

A lot of hard work
to fill this whole building

right to the ceiling
with salt.

Yeah. It was used
to preserve the fish, of course.

Now preserves this
old building. It looks like...

You can see the salt
pouring through the wood.

Look right through the heads
of the nails.

See all the salt
coming through.

Pretty crazy.

Pretty amazing.
They actually saved this town.

And to be able to preserve this,
this is what it's about.

This is part of history,
part of our culture.

So to save it,
I think a lot more coastlines

should be able to do
the same thing.

It's a hidden gem, for sure.

Back in Newfoundland,
the weather's turned sour
in North River.

The cedar shakes are done,
the screens are installed,

but there's a bit more to do
before the homeowners

can use the gazebo
and enjoy the good weather...

when it shows up.

So Paul and Holly gotta
work through the wet

to build and install
the benches that I designed.

Seeing as it's raining
and everything Randy said,

"Hey, I got a nice little
inside job for you down
in North River!"

Holly's out doing some
preliminary cutting in the rain.

It's a little miserable,
if I'm being honest.

Basically, we got
seven benches to build,

we got one to go on each wall
on the outside.

Each one is going to have
a little armrest

slash end table
and that's going to be attached,

and the benches are going
to be floating, so if someone

wants to give a little bit
closer to the fire,

they can pull the bench in.

Perfect.

It's another rainy day,
and Paul picked the short
straw again,

or maybe he just loves
working in the rain,

but today, he's at the shop
framing up the 6x10

chicken coop for Lynette.

This morning with me,
Michael and Holly are stuck out
here in the rain.

We're workin'
on the chicken coop.

Mobile's about an hour away
from the shop,

so it's easier
and more cost-effective

to build it off site.

We save on travel time and gas.

And when it's built,
we load it, haul it,
and install it.

Framin' a chicken coop
is pretty well the same
as framin' a house.

You get a blueprint
and you get a layout

and you just follow the plan.

So that's where that goes.

- Okay. And then...
- Don't nail the bottom in,
as well.

The shop's not really
available to us anymore

One time, we used to build
the little sheds inside

on chicken coop.

Got the framing up,
so the guys can get ready

to start making
the egg catching boxes
and everything in the shop.

Because they'll be able
to get some final measurements.

Back in North River,
this 65-thousand-dollar gazebo
is almost done.

Paul's on site to help Sasha
with some final details.

This is a special one for her
since Tommy and Nancy

ain't just her clients,
but her close friends.

Talk about pressure!

- Hi!

I just got the first hook
put up, what do you think?

There's enough room there

to get turn the buttons

Exactly.

North River is a very calm
and peaceful area.

The first thing when you drive
up to this space is you notice

the never-ending trees
that go all the way off
with the water.

It's so calming,
it's so peaceful,

and they have this beautiful
cabin here,

but they really needed
an extension of that.

And especially with the hot tub,

somewhere for them to sit
and enjoy the night.

So it is a perfect
setting for a gazebo.

Kay, some custom cushions!

Let's see. Oh yeah!

- I was expecting more prints.
- No way, baby,

that's gonna be the pillow part.

Got it all figured out, Paul.

Oh, I'm so happy with these,
they look so good!

And they're gonna be great
because if they get marshmallow,

or anything spilt on them,

they're gonna be easy to clean
off, which will be nice.

And the good news--

The seating looks like
it's built in,

and when people first look at it
they think, oh!

These aren't moveable!
But it actually is able
to come out,

which is a really huge
design feature.

you're able to kinda
clean around it, which is nice,

and two: you can get closer
to the fire, so it is
a great feature to have.

We're gonna do a nice, calm,
casual, restaurant kinda feel.

This gazebo is all wood,
and the thing about the wood

is that if we just leave it
with that, it's just going
to fall flat,

there's really nothing to it.
So we added in plants outside,

that's going to bring
the energy of the greenery
and the textures,

and then the inside
of the gazebo,

the most important thing
was adding in those cushions.

Gorgeous!

We even added in some
local art

to add some kind of feeling.

That's really what
brings it to life.

The weather vane is great,

it's just like a little piece
of jewelry on top,

adds a little bit of charm

and it really was
that little finishing piece

that we needed.

I envision them using
the space with their family
a lot of the time.

This is somewhere they come
on the weekend,

they share out this cabin
between both families

and it's somewhere they're gonna
come up and enjoy themselves

in the evenings
and the mornings.

I can see them enjoying
their morning coffee out here,

but I can also see them enjoying
the evening fire.

It's somewhere
that they come out,

and kind of have their own
little quiet time.

It's going to be honestly,

just such an overall feel
to the house,

it's a little bit more
of a retreat now!

your classic bench, you know,

thinking about benches fixed,
it's just one flat board,

but we got a back to it,

and we got like,
little tables in between them,

but also there's benches
can be hauled tighter
to the fire

if you're someone
that loves the heat.

Or it can go all the ways back
and you don't like the heat,

or hey, you can take it
on this patio.

You can move it anywhere.
You can bring them
in the house if you wanted to.

I mean it's, it's like
a villa not a gazebo.

No, no.

Well, that's what
we try to do, right?

I tell ya, though,
I'm not gonna be

referring to this
as a gazebo anymore.

No, no.

And I mean the beauty
of North River is that view.

I like the height. The height,
it's the right height

that you don't lose the view,
you capture the view.

And I can only imagine what
it'll be like the nighttime.

Oh, here in the nighttime
with the lights and the fire.

And the table around the fire,
you lay your drink down.

Oh my gosh, just look.

I love the coziness
of the inside of the gazebo

and just, I have all these plans
in my mind of all the memories

we're gonna make as a family
in there,

and I have great memories
of my mom and dad.

My mom's still with us,
but my dad,

and how happy they would be
for us to be doing all of this.

So this, I just,
it's very emotional,
to be honest with ya.

It's kind of the continuation
of a tradition,

which is nice,
and its brand-new memories.

I mean, it'll be things
that we'll use,

we'll have them for a lifetime
and our kids

will have it for a lifetime.

It'll be a few rum and cokes
out here, let me tell ya.

It's just, I had no imagination

that it could come to this.
It's absolutely gorgeous.

It is. It's way beyond
our wildest dreams, isn't it?

It really is.
Yeah, it's spectacular.

It had to look good,
but it had to be useable as well

so every inch of it,
the ground kind of fell off

and they had a nice bit
of height, so you got
storage underneath,

you got benches that can move,

you got tables
that's next to it,

you got a fire pit
in the centre.

Kind of checks all the boxes
where it looks great

but it works great too.

doing this, when we were
here putting it together,

every time I put something down
I was like, "Oh gosh,

this is so good!

We were so excited.
- It's got everything we want.

And I mean, the thing--

Feels pretty good
to have the gazebo all done.

That was a full team effort.

You know, it was a dream
of theirs to have a gazebo,

somewhere to sit down,
somewhere to not get

eat by the flies, but enjoy
the outdoor space still,

you know, have that fresh air,
and I think we achieved it.

Our mom especially
loved the river,

the mountain and the moon,

and all of that is captured

in an unbelievable
way inside of there.

So that makes it extra special.

We're going to name it
after our folks,

so we're gonna call it
Ter and Tommy's Terrace

because it's not just a gazebo,

it's a whole lot
more than a gazebo.

The gazebo was
this spectacular,

I can't wait to see the kitchen.

Stage one is done,
and it feels amazing.

Now onto stage two.

Turning the inside space
we demo'd

into a dream kitchen
for their whole family.

I think that
they are thrilled,

which is the main thing
that we wanted.

That's the number one thing.

If they're happy, we're happy.

On to the next.

so don't count our roosters
before they're hatched.
