Getting the kids

But over the hill in Brigus
is a bigger challenge:

Finishing Ruth and Graham's
house

before the Blueberry Festival.

It's been a year of hard work,
right from the start.

We're making a duck pond!

Good place for making
a swimming pool, huh, Randy?

The ground floor has a garage
and a guest room...

The main floor
is all open concept

with kitchen, dining area,
and living room

that looks out over the pond.

Upstairs, Ruth's got a study,

and the main bedroom
has a big walk-in closet,

an en suite,
and a picture-perfect view

of the harbour.

That's a good place
for a propane tank!

The old man can't do it,
'cause he's too slow!

This is a huge job.

It's hot in here!

Jeez I can't !

Oh boy!

But every detail
is looking mint!

Pine on the ceiling,
Tile in the bathroom.

Tile, wood, we do it all!

On top of all the work
at the house,

we're building
their custom kitchen too.

We should be able
to pull it off if all goes well.

With the Harbour Pond job
so close to finishing,

time to start something new.

I got an interesting call
about a job in North River,

which is a perfect location!

I grew up just, you know,
down the road in Brigus,

probably about 15 minutes away
and you know,

you might see water
in the background.

The funny thing is,
it's fresh water.

It's actually a salmon river.
Where I live at is ocean,

so mightn't see
whales goin' here,

but you see a few salmon
and eagles go by.

Usually I'll meet the client,

you know, figure out the design,

then bring in Sam and Sasha.
Right now,

Sasha's bringin' in me.

She got some projects
that needs to go on here.

This is the place?
- This is the place.

I know. Isn't it amazing?
We're right on the river.

I love this place. I mean,
these are very dear

family friends of mine
and my family,

so I can't wait for you
to take on this project with me.

I have known Tommy and his wife
for quite a while, actually.

They're a huge family friend
of my whole family,

the Hutton family, all the way
from my grandfather and my dad

and myself. So Tommy
is actually my lawyer!

Definitely a nice place.
Look at the A-frame house,

big windows.
- I know. It's a cozy

cottage cabin that you want
to come to, you know?

Around 1980 our parents
built this,

and our dad subsequently
passed away,

and our mom kept the property
and she enjoyed it.

She's still alive.
She's 97 and she thought

it would be nice for myself
and Nancy to take it over

with our kids and families.

- And now even grandchildren--
- Yeah, it's gone down

through the third generation,
which is nice to see.

When we said we had a project,

I knew Sasha had worked
with Randy.

It's nice to have someone local,
you know, do the project.

So we knew his work.
I'm, you know,

really enthusiastic,
as is Nancy, I think.

So this house, we have
quite a few things to do.

Down here is where
we're gonna do our gazebo.

I mean, they have a fantastic
outdoor space already.

There's this huge lawn,
they have the hot tub area.

Just to have then the gazebo.

- Yeah, yeah.
- They're a huge family,
so having them here,

all those spaces, they're gonna
have some good parties.

Yeah, yeah. Definitely.

The gazebo is in where
the hammock is goin', is it?

Yes, yes. So in there,
we're gonna get just simple

wood gazebo, nice look
to tie in with the house.

So the gazebo's gonna be level
with this deck of the hot tub?

- Yes.
- So you walk right
straight onto the gazebo.

So we're probably gonna have
to cut down a few trees in there

to make room for it.
- Yes.

I love working
on outdoor spaces,

and I got some catty ideas
how to build it.

It's gotta have eight sides

so they have lots of room
to hang out,

and I'll attach it
to the existing deck.

I'll keep the natural finish
on all the materials

so it ties into the wooded
area.

And I'll add cedar shakes
to the bottom skirt,

and the roof for added texture.

Inside, we'll add a firepit
and lots of bench seating,

so they can sit down
and enjoy the views.

And hey, you got a big pond
to jump into.

People swim in that?
- Well, you could be the first
one to find out.

- I was thinking you jump in.
- Randy, not happening!

This is a good place
to make a bet. Hmm...

So we have this fantastic
space out here.

It's huge, but we have
a very tiny kitchen inside

that needs some serious help.

There's something really
magical about this place to me.

I mean, this huge ceiling,
dark beams. It's beautiful.

We want to keep this warm rustic
charm in through the kitchen.

- It's a catty spot.
- It's pretty cool, hey?

- Yeah, for sure.
- I love it.

So let me show you the kitchen.
Just mind the fridge here.

Just walk around the fridge.

There's just you and me
in here right now

and it's already
a little bit tight.

Can you imagine having
a family in here trying to get

breakfast in the morning,
cooking a turkey dinner?

- No, buddy, not gonna happen.

So I think the main thing
is this here,

we are going to blow
this out a little bit.

- Okay.
- And that's gonna be a full
wall of cabinetry.

That is where we're gonna
have our stove and that is where

we're gonna have our fridge.

Really big difference.

So this is gonna be
a coffee bar,

this is gonna be a huge space,
open shelving,

you can see all the way through.

We're still keeping the design
of the sink here,

new cabinetry, obviously,
throughout the whole place.

It's gonna be a huge
change for them.

- Definitely.
- I mean, huge change.

Sasha's vision for
the layout makes a lot of
sense.

So I'll give her more space
by removing the walls

and making the bump out bigger

for extra cabinetry
and appliances.

A new breakfast bar will have
a large window.

It'll have the perfect view
to start the day.

Definitely an interesting
project. We're gonna
do a big gazebo.

We're gonna have to use like,
big eight by eights.

It's gonna have to be
concrete pads, beams to open up.

There's a lot of technical
stuff but, hey,

we're lookin' at making it
look awesome

and that stuff will come.

The total budget to get both
projects done

is about $120,000.

and we're gettin' ready

to do some demo.

We're getting rid of
the old kitchen bump out.

some demo, anyway.

We're going straight down
with the new addition.

Today, our goal is rippin' off
that piece

that's attached
to the kitchen. Makin the deck,

takin' that apart.
Then we'll plan for
the diggin' and buildin'

and the windows and everything
else that comes with it.

that's a lot more solid
than I thought.

Basically, we're just
gettin' it out of the way

and buildin' a new addition.

It's like any jobsite,

there's a whole lot goin' on.

tile guys are here,
the electrical's
gonna be finished up soon.

We got countertops still
comin' in, the b'ys finished up
on the cabinets.

You name it, the plumbers,
the ventilation guys.

Big long list.

Plus, a major feature we built.
It's huge and heavy!

It's an eight by eight
solid-oak barn door.

It's gonna hang
on a slide-track

separating the open-concept
kitchen from the spare room
at the front.

Great idea...
but it's tangly to install!

So it's gonna be me,
Al and Harv.

Got the big guns helpin' us.
Got a little bit of a task!

Doors are easy to hang when
they're not eight foot wide,

eight foot high,
and all solid wood.

The door is probably

and we gotta try to attach it

out of Styrofoam or something.

there's no debate

about the custom work
for Harbour Pond.

It's on track and looking mint!

the vanity fronts

for Harbour Pond vanities.

PJ's out in the spray booth
sprayin' the doors

for Harbour Pond's kitchen,

and I'm getting the countertop
on the go for the kitchen.

Bit of everything
on the go here today.

This is the oak we're gonna
use for the countertops
for Harbour Pond.

Most people like stone tops,
granite tops, laminate.

Depends on the customer.

A butcher block is another
popular top.

This is gonna be like
a custom build

instead of small strips
like butcher blocks.

It's gonna be a bit
wider of a strip.

We're gonna go with
the four-inch rungs

on this countertop.

We'll see how it turns out.

We should have these countertops
pretty well glued up

in about a day and a half.
Glue time is the longest.

Just waitin' for the glue to set
so we can work with it.

But it shouldn't be
too bad at all.

Back at Harbour Pond,
some finishing touches

are being done inside.

And on the outside,
the old man and Harv

are finishing up the railing
on the balcony.

I come here on the intention
to do some rock work,

but no rocks showed up yet,
so I'm gonna give Harv

a hand cuttin'.
Take the easy job.

Is it just square cuts?
- Yup.

- So you want half weight?
- Oh, for sure.

Perfect being Harv's
assistant.

You haven't think about
nuttin' when he puts it...

When he puts a mark on it,

paint pressure-treated

In North River,
me and the new rookie, Holly,

need to finish what Paul
started on the foundation

for the new kitchen bump out.

We're building a large piece
on the side

to give the kitchen a lot
more room, better flow,

and a new window will
bring in more light.

It's a catty spot to cook up
a feed and take in the view!

The foundation for the add-on,
it's only half dug out,

which means it's time
to jump on the machines!

So we got the skid steer
and we got the mini,

and over here,
Paul got a good start,

but we gotta try
to finish it now.

So you're gonna drive
the skid steer.

- Okay.

So we gotta get this dug
out today

so we can get the concrete in.
So once we get the footings,

the walls, then we can
actually start the woodworking
on top of it.

Before we start,
I need to teach Holly

how to drive the skid steer.

It's part of the job,
but it's the fun part for me.

Hopefully, Holly will be
best kind on the skid steer.

on track,

PJ's had to call in a favour.

in the workshop at home
with his father.

to get a template

for the cut-out for the sink,

We got a slipway goin'
in today, so they're doin'
some diggin' for that.

We got some cribbing also going,
in which is,

And all it is, a slipway is just
a place to launch your boat

and some cribbing is to just
keep the dirt up on the sides.

So a place to tie
a boat on and... yeah.

Just keep the dirt
more than anything.

You're gonna take whatever's

It's a mossie old day
at the job site in North River,

and we've got two
projects on the go.

The kitchen bump-out,
and the new gazebo.

Paul's got to take off
the concrete forms

so we can start building
on the new foundation.

The new kitchen layout
is much bigger

and has better flow
for family gatherings.

Plus, it'll be brighter
with the new large window.

But before we can start
to build,

we've got to waterproof
the foundation,

then backfill it with
a ton of stone and dirt.

I got stone ordered yesterday
for ten o'clock today,

so... let alone that,

I got Nikki over
on the other side.

We're gettin' ready
for the gazebo build.

While one foundation is done,

we're getting
the other one started.

The gazebo is eight-sided,

so we need to create eight
concrete pillars

for the foundation.

The structure will be made
of wood and trimmed out

with a whole lot
of cedar shakes.

And I wanna get concrete
ordered and poured today.

So I gotta get to work.

- Yeah, perfect. Roll 'er.

Today we are laying out
for a... octagon...

- Gazebo.
- Gazebo!

Trickiest part is gettin'
all your tubes laid right,

then it'll be free flowing.

To make round concrete
pillars,

we're using 18-inch
cardboard tubes

that we'll bury six feet
in the ground

which is below frost line.

Once they're in place,
we fill them with concrete,

let 'em dry... and bingo!

We got nice, round
concrete posts,

and a solid foundation
to build on.

Don't worry about me.

As long as he don't

we're waterproofing
the foundation

before it gets backfilled.

We're covering all
the snap tie holes

so no water can get in,
covering it with a bit of tar.

Basically it's just gonna
protect it from the weather.

And the rocks and stuff
throughout the time.

You might wonder how
we can pour concrete today

and like lots of times
we can't because of rain.

Today, everything is in a form,

everything is contained.

It's not like we're trying
to do a finished slab

for a house build,
something which needs to have
a super-pretty high-end finish.

So it's just a little rough pour
and it's all formed.

Everything's protected anyways.

Apparently, it's PJ's
brother-in-law
that's driving the cement truck.

Trevor. I won't remember a name.
I'll just call him my buddy.

Everybody got a buddy
who everybody calls Buddy.

Funny thing is,
when you're in Newfoundland,

if I say, "Buddy over there
with the chainsaw,"

or, "Buddy with the excavator,"
some look like him to be,

"Yeah, I knows buddy."

If I went to PJ I'll say,
"Hey, we had buddy
droppin' off cement.

You know buddy?"
He'll be like, "Yeah."

So we just finished off.
Got all the Sonotubes poured.

Nikki just finished drawin' out
the last one

and she gonna be perfect.

doing their jobs.

all working around each other.

And so the countdown
is really on, because today,

we have got to finish
this project.

The homeowners are adamant.

The Blueberry Festival
is happening very soon.

So we have got to be done
so that they can host

and celebrate the festival
and take it all in,

in their brand-new home.

Okay. I've got the pillows,
I got the baskets.

So these are going
in the closet.

And then this is going
in Ruth's den.

That's right. What do you

I'm thinking of putting

Oh, my gosh. I love them.
They're gorgeous.

This is a great feeling.

The new build that we've
done here is finished.

They're gonna be so happy
with this house.

And even though
it's a new build,

it has a lot of character in it,
which is the main thing,

I think, in the end of the day.

It's not just like
a cookie cutter feeling at all.

I love that this
is their old piece,

and these are their old books.
Graham and Ruth's old books.

Oh, it's so beautiful.
It's that great kind of like,
old vintage look.

With new builds,
it's important to incorporate

old things or things
that you've brought
from other homes,

antique pieces, things that
are really important to you,

whether it's old photographs
or things from travel.

The overall style of this home
is kind of a country

vintage chic kind of feel.

kind of throughout it,
but it's kind of an old,

charming, vintage
kind of French...

Like, the kitchen has
that French charm.

I feel like you just said

coastal traditional.

I'm gonna keep it

It's open concept,
yet each space

has its designated area.

Behind us,
we have the cozy area.

Some layered rugs.
We have the propane stove.

Dining next to it.
And then the kitchen is open
to that space,

which is super important,
especially in Newfoundland.

That's good.

We're just here makin'
the plants happy.

PJ and Matt killed it
with this kitchen.

It's unbelievable.

High expectations
are comin' out here now.

The custom cabinets,

the beautiful wood backsplash,

the range hood,
the floor-to-ceiling cabinets

over by the fridge.

Yeah.

The colouring in this house,
I really love.

It's tying in the sea,
but in a softer way,

so it's tying in
a little bit of the soft

bluey-green kind of colour
in the kitchen

with that soft cream
in the island.

But then the floor is also
more of like a sand colour.

So it's not a dark harsh colour.

We really kept it
light and airy in here.

Up in their bedroom,
we have that soft blue,

which, again, is just tying in
the whole feel of the house.

It's very cohesive.
Until you get to Ruth's room.

Yeah, exactly.
That's a different thing.

A lot of times I say
have fun with like a powder room

or have fun with an office.
Have fun with a space

that maybe not everyone
is going to see

that's really special to you.

- Definitely.
- And I think that's what we did
in Ruth's room.

The homeowners
are gonna be so happy.

Their house is done.
It's ready to move in.

And it feels like a home.
Which is great.

So they just need to get

for Blueberry Festival.
