My team and I are building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it the rock for nothing.

We fight the elements year-round to get the job done.

It might be tough for some but not for us.

Because when this is your view, it's worth it.

Welcome back to Newfoundland!

Summer is always our busy time of year, but you gotta love it.

You know, nice, sunny weather. You wake up in the morning,

the birds chirping, going to the job site.

Nothing better.

Then the madness happens.

Get it done, Son.

New job here in Portugal Cove.

It's gonna be a good one.

Deadly view, anyway.

Looking out at Bell Island, looking out over the ocean.

This house is another catty build,

coming after a large year of awesome projects.

We did a massive reno in St. John's.

Look at that.

Found a beautiful chimney.

And that was a real head-scratcher at times.

Man-oh-man-oh-man.

Ros, the homeowner, loves colour.

Oh, my!

This is not our house!

And we saved a couple old biscuit box houses on the Avalon.

We're really down to the wire.

We got every trade you can think of is in there now at something.

Wow.

I love it. It looks incredible.

We're in Petty Harbour today and it's going to be a tangly one.

Some think we should have torn it down

and started over but that's not what we do.

But it wasn't easy!

There's always some kind of challenge building here in Newfoundland.

There's a storm coming.

And part of the Trans-Canada Highway washed out,

creating big delays for our supplies.

So today most of the windows have arrived.

It was a scramble, but we got it done.

And if it was easy?

Everybody would wanna do it.

This year's going to be really challenging

because we have big supply chain issues

and that's going to put delays.

You need multiple jobs so you can pivot.

Lucky for me, there's a lot going on.

Lotta unique projects and a lot of Newfoundland flavour.

That's a first for me, to see a ship's mast holding up the floor.

Not every day you're building a chicken coop,

not every day you're lifting it over the trees.

They had a little bit of trouble trying

to get the wharf done and this is hurricane season.

It's all muck.

Who got this brainy idea to build out here?

Burger and fries.

All I got is roosters, buddy.

So we got the good, bad and the tangly jobs.

Back over in Brigus, down on Harbour Pond,

there's one good and tangly job

waiting for us to finish.

It's a brand-new house for Ruth and Graham

that my old man kick-started last year.

And before winter, it was framed up,

roof on, and looking mint!

Hey, main level.

Kitchen, living room.

It's coming along.

The old man wants me to finish it up.

The homeowners just arrived.

But we'll see how that goes.

I'll hand the rest over to Randy

so you can call him from now on.

The clapboard's gone up and she's looking bright,

just like the dory in the pond!

The colour is definitely unique to Newfoundland, for sure.

As you can see we're not afraid of a pop of colour.

I hope the homeowner don't have too many pets,

'cause he's gonna have another 40 or 50 ducks to be buddies with.

The inside's coming along too.

Mario's got the walls ready to prime,

and we can move ahead on some finishing details.

We're into the stage of doing trim.

Al is doing ledges right now

and I'm just putting some plastic on the inside of them

for the painter Mario, so he can spray them without messing the windows up.

When you're at the trim stage, it's a good thing to be at, so...

There's a lot going on, it's fun.

It's a Newfoundland feeling, Newfoundland vibe,

and it just feels happy.

Let's see inside, is it gonna be as good?

It's gonna be a little bit better.

On the ground floor, there's a drive-through garage

plus a guest room.

The main level is all open concept with a custom kitchen,

dining area, and a cozy living room

that looks out over the pond.

At the very top, there's a study for Ruth,

and the main bedroom has a walk-in closet,

and custom washroom.

This home with deadly views of Brigus

has a budget of 500 000,

and we've got two months to get it all done

so the homeowners can enjoy the blueberry festival.

Yes, look at this beautiful room!

Oh, it's coming together, Randy.

Looks like Scott's been busy.

He's done a great job. Wow.

I'm excited about working in a newer home.

Yeah. There's not the same concerns that we have,

you know, these vintage type older homes

where, you know, leaks just happening.

We don't have wonky stairs that Nikki's gonna be cursing us out.

We only have really from here to here.

So we're gonna do full cabinetry in this wall area.

Yeah, and that's going to add the warmth.

So this kitchen's going to have cream all through here.

And so this wall here, we're doing this great little like...

To work well with the creamy cabinets that'll be here.

It's going to be such a fantastic space

for entertaining and I know they love to do that.

just what you need in your bedroom.

to bring in some wood.

on this architectural ceiling.

a little bit of a pattern, a little bit of texture here.

Ruth's retreat!

So this is where that texture is going, in this room?

It's gonna have lux wallpaper,

it's gonna have texture, it's gonna have deep moody tones.

It's going to be maximal design instead of minimal design.

I need to go search for what all this stuff is, fancy-dancy colours.

So I'm gonna go figure out how to build me cabinets

While I wait for the design details for the inside,

outside things are looking very different.

The old man's finally seeing it my way.

He's on a machine!

He's digging holes for a new gate,

and then he's got to build a pad for the propane tank.

Sometimes I have to use the excavator.

It's mainly because Randy makes me.

Pick and shovel is my way to go, though.

And you know something different?

I never broke not one single thing.

Randy would have the corners off 'er.

That's 'cause he's a snail!

The excavator, I'm a little bit slow on

but I get the job done and I don't break nothing.

Maybe I'm getting old. Can't get up out of the hole.

It's better to be a snail and not break anything.

Took him two days to put in four posts.

It was eight posts, sorry to tell you.

I spread six loads of topsoil in four hours.

Yeah, you never had nothing to hit.

Down at Harbour Pond in Brigus,

the old man's on a machine!

He may be in charge of the project,

but he's taking forever getting the ground ready

for the new propane tank.

On this job here, the old man keeps trying to slide it over

and I keep sliding it back, so he's looking after this whole place.

I'm just here for the grunt work.

I wanted to put that off of my shoulders

and get the homeowner to keep calling him, but it never happened.

Too many other jobs. I got ten, he got one.

- How heavy is that? - Heavy.

I'm just putting fill right there, right?

The old man can't do it 'cause he's too slow.

...the next customer to satisfy is near St. John's,

on a community project that's too fun to pass up.

So I'm in Shea Heights starting out today,

just outside St. John's and I gotta do an outside classroom.

So I must go see the principal and make a game plan.

Hopefully, I'm not gonna get in trouble.

I used to a little bit when I was younger.

Memories!

We checked in with the kids, teachers,

so there's a big wish list.

One thing about kids, they got no filter,

so they'll tell you really how they feel.

So this is our outdoor classroom dance.

The community of Shea Heights, it's a very close-knit community.

We looked at the great work that Randy and his team have done

and we knew that would be a good fit for our school.

Welcome to our planned outdoor learning classroom.

Okay. Cool.

Nice big space.

This is a place for everybody to come and learn.

Absolutely.

We're a K to 9 school

and this will be a space that's accessible all year long,

where we're going to encourage our children to come out

and just have a lot of fun and have a great space

for learning that gets them outside of the school.

Oh, okay. Right on.

So a blank canvas here.

We can actually build something to sit around.

We can build some vegetable gardens.

What do you think about that?

I think that's brilliant and that's what

our kids have been asking for.

However... we can't use wood.

Oh, man. Can't use wood?

I'm going home.

You know, we do have some concerns

for fire hazards and having wood pieces out here.

Well, the good thing for you is that we do work with wood,

but we work with rocks, we work with metal,

so we don't really have to go with the wood.

So, kinda leave it with me.

So I see they definitely did some patchwork around the walls.

So are we gonna do something with this?

Oh, we'd love that. And we had a student

who actually designed a beautiful mural...

- Okay. - For our Eagle Pride group,

to represent our LGBTQ community

and we had a parent jump on board

who's offered to paint that mural out here for us.

Oh, awesome.

Cool. So basically,

learning place, remove all this, make it flat,

mural all around the wall, have a garden,

which I love a garden.

You know, there is some other fine details

where we can't use wood. That's what we love.

I know you love wood.

- I love rocks too. - But I can count on you

to be able to do that and think outside the box.

I'll put my creativity hat on and come up

with a game plan and start bringing equipment in.

That's what school's all about, my friend.

Randy mentioned to us

that he got all F's for "fantastic."

But I am sure that he would have gotten an A-plus

if there was more outdoor learning spaces available for him.

Get our classroom done!

With school out for the summer,

the mural painter, Nicole, can get started right away.

It's a great little cozy corner.

Whenever I see a new wall, I see new potential

and I can see this mural flowing right across

these two walls and bringing it all together.

I've been painting since high school,

or since I was a kid, so it's a hobby of mine.

I enjoy it.

I'm a heavy equipment operator and it's awesome to be at this.

With this project, what was interesting was that

they had a child that did a drawing and won the contest.

So we're gonna take that drawing

and incorporate it into this piece.

This looks about 800 square feet.

The prep work has to be done first, so wall washed.

And I'm glad it's gonna get spray primed.

I am trying to map out this mural

before we actually start putting the paint to it.

I just use sidewalk chalk. It works great.

This is just to get a rough idea of where everything is being placed.

It's supposed to rain on Friday so I got two days.

So I'm trying to get chalk done on day one

and get the outline in black paint on day two.

And then it'll be like colour-by-number-ish

when we get going.

We're gonna go with the Pride palette

and we're gonna run a nice rainbow ribbon

right through this whole mural.

It's all about community and the school

and the kids and the staff are just amazing.

It pulls everything together.

I'm really excited to work with Randy and his team.

This is gonna be a nice project.

Outside St. John's,

the Shea Heights outdoor classroom project

is right on track.

Josh, a local landscaper, wanted to get involved,

which is awesome.

We're taking out all the old grass,

everything that was a little bit dilapidated and unmaintained.

And we're replacing it with brand new topsoil,

brand new sod, kinda just beautifying the area

so it looks nice for when the classroom kids come out, right?

Randy mentioned it to us about the job and stuff like that.

We said we'd be all on board.

It's always nice to help the community,

especially with the kids involved.

It'll be nice to see them kinda use it for years to come, right?

What we're gonna do then is come in with brand new sod

and make sure everything is good and in tip-top shape.

The whole idea of an outdoor classroom I thought was really cool.

I'd love to have seen that when I was a kid!

It's a hot day in Brigus,

and work at Harbour Pond is right on schedule.

The new engineered flooring went in without a problem!

And Harv and Al have taken the bathroom from

builder basic to Newfound-Mint!

I'm doing tile.

I don't mind it.

The tiles are...

And they're going up here,

There's no issues, only it's hot in here, no joke.

Oh, bring on the shower.

On the outside...

...the stairs to the front door are getting installed.

And now it's time to tackle that "lux" feature

We don't just keep the big changes

limited to the job sites.

We gave my company its own upgrade, too.

This year definitely changed from last year.

You know, we kinda got a little bit more busier.

Hent we built a piece onto the shop, so the wood shop is grown.

We added on this space and as you see,

we got an assembly bench here, that's our spray booth.

Then we got the drying rack, 'cause when the b'ys are spraying all the stuff,

you need somewhere to lay it and dry it.

This is where all the final details go in.

So, you know what?

The old man was the go-to for in the shop...

...then we added PJ,

and we added Matt last year.

So two of the b'ys are the go-to.

The old man still is in here dabbling, you know,

when he got time to do other stuff.

So having everybody from the b'ys in the wood shop

to the old man, to everybody out in the field,

to everybody in the office,

it's us to figure it out and how we're gonna build it.

And that's what we love about it,

and that's why we can pull off all these awesome projects.

The biggest challenge is getting materials

for all the custom work we do.

But today we've got everything ready to go for a dining table,

and the big job, making the kitchen for Harbour Pond.

Deadlines are tight, but they're on it.

We should be able to pull it off if all goes well.

As long as doesn't change.

Everything lines up right, it should work out.

Randy wants it done yesterday as always.

We work together great. We've done it for years and it just works good.

Scatter a little scuffle in between,

but it works out in the end.

Making the table out of birch

and our inventory that come in for the table

is no longer in the inventory.

Could be trouble.

Scott had decided to use some of our birch for his project

that was for our project

and somebody's got to break the news to Randy.

I think I'll leave that one for PJ.

It took like a month for us to get this birch in

to get this table built, and now,

no more birch.

So we're hoping we don't have to wait another month

to get the other pieces to finish it.

Summer's short in Newfoundland,

so we gotta grab every adventure when we can.

Which is why me, Nikki, Paul and the old man

are headed way up to a catty little spot

called Herring Neck.

Not too far away from Twillingate,

right in the Atlantic Ocean.

So we're in salt water. It's cold.

It won't be trout fimming around, it'll be codfish.

They have a Dory Festival here including a rowing competition

that anyone can join.

And you know how much we love to compete!

So how big is a dory? Is it much bigger than a kayak?

Depending on if it's a sea kayak they're probably the same length.

Good stuff.

All the boats are made of wood, which we love,

but they were used for fishing back in the day, not racing!

Could be tricky!

A little bit of competition on the go, I think.

I didn't have too much experience rowing dories.

Rubber dinghies, yes.

This here's gonna be pretty new.

But it's bragging rights when we leave Herring Neck

and go back to the rest of the team.

You can't go back saying that you lost.

You gotta go back saying that you won.

Is the pointy part the back of the boat?

So we've been rowing boats for a long, long, long,

long time, since we were 10 or 12 years old.

- Probably 10 or 12 old. - Old enough to know how to row.

We grew up racing with our friends,

just in the harbour out here.

Typically our confidence level is fairly high.

- Absolutely, yes. - That we're going to medal...

- At least. - ...in the race.

And we got the community behind us.

Usually everybody is rooting for us, you see.

Back on the Avalon, we're racing again,

but this time,

it's to finish the outdoor classroom

at the Shea Heights school.

We got three picnic tables to go together.

It's really exciting to see this project

finally come to fruition.

Pretty much, they can come out,

be little farmers, be creative.

Oh, they absolutely will!

They're going to love it when they see it.

To see that everybody pulled together,

like having our students heard

and the collaboration with you guys and the rest of the community

makes my heart full!

That's the thing, we made sure we had the students being heard.

They wanted a quiet corner,

so we made them a quiet corner over here.

Oh, I can see the kids sitting there

reading their book or having a little chat with one another.

And then we did this lovely garden.

Beautiful. And these are the rocks

that our students have painted.

This was such a blank spot, you know,

overgrown and now look at it,

it's a wonderful area where kids are gonna want to be,

and staff are gonna want to be.

It was a beautiful space

and it was a big challenge you put to us.

We did.

The one rule, we couldn't use wood.

That's what we're all about, using wood!

So you really had to think outside the box.

We came up with a solution to actually do metal tables.

Well, part of education is giving you a good challenge

and you certainly have met that challenge.

I wanna take a seat! I want to get in here.

When you're here working,

you can really let your imagination soar

as you sit here looking up at that mural.

And then, if I was going to do a report card,

I could do: Randy, an absolute

Totally exceeded our expectations.

You know, definitely it was a big wish list from the kids.

It's going to be hard to get them to come back inside I think.

I know! I think you created something

where they're probably not gonna learn inside anymore,

they'll only learn out here! - They are!

It's hard for me to pick a favourite part,

because everything represents something the students wanted.

I love the mural for our LGBTQ+ group.

The beautiful garden, quiet spot, we really needed that.

And then these beautiful tables where the kids are gonna come outside

and just spend their days and learning in a new and unique environment.

It's really worth seeing.

This is amazing.

It's great to see that you've written

"Welcome to Shea Gardens" on our new white board.

Father Shea's family donated the money for us

to make this classroom happen

and then we know that the students can use

the white board for their learning and all their projects

they're going to do out here. I can't wait for our students to see it.
