Things were back in motion again.
I was weeding through all the boring stories so I could find out the most
interesting ones.
But I will say, there was none more interesting than Handyman Nathan.
Because when he wasn't doing apartment repairs, he was working his way through
almost every woman at our complex.
And when he said he'd do anything for money, He wasn't lying.
But as it turns out, he'd also do any one.
Watching people without their knowledge always creates moral dilemmas when faced
with something like this.
Do you speak out?
Do you do nothing?
For me, I've always tried to remember I wasn't supposed to be watching, and
therefore I wasn't supposed to do anything at all.
When the pastor's wife came home later that afternoon, I waited for the moment
that she'd discover what had happened, but her reaction was not what I
I couldn't comprehend it.
There wasn't even a hint of shock or rage on her face that someone had robbed
her of a lot of money.
Just that cool, calm of religious perfection that made no sense to me.
no audience to judge her, and yet she remained unjudgeable.
When I saw her outside the complex shortly thereafter, she wore that same
of contentedness. She wasn't stewing about it at all.
She just waved and smiled as if nothing had happened. How could she really be at
peace with losing all that money?
But, as it turns out, money was the least of her troubles.
The self -loathing thought.
Where are your pills?
I'm not going to do it again, Laura.
Where are your pills?
When are you going to stop this?
I just can't keep pretending.
What pretending?
Pretending that everything's okay when it's not okay.
Of course. Of course it's okay.
We have each other.
Maybe you should talk to someone.
I can't let anyone see how weak I am.
You are not weak.
What about a therapist?
I don't want anyone knowing about this.
You've been struggling with this for months now, and you haven't touched me
in... I don't know how long.
You can't shut me out.
I know.
I just hate that some kid swoops in, half my age, into the church and
listens to him. That used to be me.
Then make them listen. Stop letting others get in the way of your success.
I just want something to go right.
Life is hard.
But love is what gets us through.
You taught me that.
Oh, baby.
Come on.
Don't succumb to the darkness.
There's light.
So nice.
You should do it more often now.
Yeah.
I know.
One hand.
Can you hear that? Yeah.
Perfectly.
Thank you.
Hmm.
I've missed this.
Oh, yeah.
Oh,
that
feels so good.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Aside from Laura, the rest of us are just a public facade and a private
All of us.
Every last one of us.
