I mean, there's only, you know,
three in existence.

Every once in a while,

a film comes along that
defies the laws of physics,

logic, cinematography,
common sense, and art itself.

This film seeps into your skin
like cheap grape jelly

past its expiration date
and leaves you broken,

sobbing on your phone
to your best friend,

consulting the authorities
on the best way

to rearrange your synapses

so that it can be erased
from your brain scape.

Sometimes a film explodes
with so many non sequiturs,

smash cuts, and cheesy
special effects

that you end up
hating yourself for watching it

and yet proud of yourself
for surviving it.

"Things" is such a film.

Back in the late '80s
and early '90s

when video stores
were still thriving,

"Things" was everywhere.

In a world where amateur
filmmaking was still the sort of

thing that usually ended
with broken dreams,

half finished projects,
and parents forcing their little

auteur to get a job and stop
wasting their money,

two men in Toronto,

specifically the Scarborough
neighborhood of Toronto,

defied the odds
and got one of the cheapest,

most inept films ever made
into video stores

all over North America.

You were about to be
assaulted by "Things."

If you've never seen it before,
you're going to hate it.

If you've seen it once,

you're wondering why you
should ever watch it again.

But if you've seen it
twice or more,

then you're a VHS pervert
who knows that it spawned

more drinking games
and late night conversation

than movies that cost one
million percent more to make.

And I'm using that number
precisely.

"Things" is grainy,
out of focus, badly lit,

badly acted, dubbed with voices
that don't match the movements

on the actors mouths,
full of static distortion,

sections where the sound
drops out entirely,

long sequences where
characters are drinking beer,

telling nonsensical stories, or
simply walking around bathrooms

with flashlights,
full of trite dialogue,

hard to follow,
starring a mullet head

with a mustache so bad
half of it falls off

in one of his scenes,
with a Casio keyboard soundtrack

used to accompany entire
subplots about needing to pee

without disturbing
the paper mâché ant creature

with fangs, crab legs,
and pincer jaws

that may or may not be
hiding in the bathtub,

all while the cast
tosses off one liners

about Aleister Crowley,
Salvador Dali,

and why it would have
been better for a brother

to have been born as a midget.

[Laughter]

Just when you think
all of these elements

are about to make
your brain throb

like a giant blister
about to burst,

you'll suddenly start asking
philosophical questions

such as, why is the father look
the same age as his daughter?

Why is porn star Amber Lynn
giving us news updates

between scenes?

Is this an actual film?

Maybe it's a dream.

Maybe I'm on drugs,
and this is my punishment

for just saying yes.

-Why did that guy get
a tape recorder out of

the fridge and then put his
jacket into the freezer?

Why is everybody drunk
or stoned in every scene?

Why am I getting a headache
trying to understand the plot?

Is there a plot?

What is that?

Why is he doing that?

What is he holding in his hand?

When will the mustachioed mullet
man in the blue knit

pullover sweater stop fighting
off the giant rubber ants

that came out of
his brother's wife's womb

after she was inseminated
with toxic fertility drugs

by a sadistic scientist
who can't stop smiling?

[Laughter]

When will this be over?

Yes, you'll be asking all of
these questions and more,

but fortunately for you,

I'll be here to guide you
through it all.

And a little later,
we're going to have

one of our special friends
of the show,

our favorite Canadian,
you know who I'm talking about,

join us from his home in Tampa

to explain the overarching
philosophy of things

and the reasons it became
a cult favorite among

video hounds and lovers of
"worst movies in history" lists.

Now, I don't want to call it
the worst movie in history.

I mean, I do, but I won't,

because every time I think I've
seen the worst movie ever made,

someone comes along to outdo it.

So let's just say we're going
to meet "Things"

on its own terms.

So bring out the alcoholic
beverage of your choice.

We're doing a shot every time
somebody grabs a beer,

a shot every time
somebody gets attacked

by a caterpillar with teeth,

and we're going to keep
a stack of cheese sandwiches

on the table in front of us
to be consumed in their entirety

during the infamous extended
make a sandwich sequence.

We're going to buck up,

we're going to fortify ourselves
with "Last Drive In" stamina,

which we've honed through
hundreds of hours

of enduring the detritus
of horror culture.

And we're going to survive
and prevail, right, Darcy?

And now we present an experience

that will be imprinted deep
in your psyche forever.

The story of a couple who
desperately want to have a baby

but are unable to conceive.

So they employ a hooker in
a Halloween mask as a surrogate,

but apparently fail to get
the results that they want.

The details are not
clear on that.

So they then decide
to hire a sadistic doctor

who likes to cut off
the body parts of subjects

while they're still alive.

But somehow this results
in toothy monsters

erupting from the womb
and scattering through a house

in the woods where
the woman's brother

and his beer drinking pal
happened to be camping out,

causing alarm on a news show
hosted by Amber Lynn

when they don't return for
two weeks and run out of beer.

Sure, we've seen it before,
but have we seen it

with insects folded
into giant cheese sandwiches?

I think not.

Let's look at those
drive in totals and get started.

We have seven dead bodies
two breasts,

one dead dog, one completely
naked surrogate mother

wearing a devil mask
with beard and eyebrows

and dog tags
between her breasts.

One sweater in the freezer,
one tongue extraction,

one blackened attack zombie,

mini-monster hacking,

close up puke-a-rama,

gratuitous Satanic Cult dialogue

Drive-In Academy Award
nominations for Amber Lynn

as the newscaster reading
off cue cards

that are placed
to her extreme right,

causing her to force her eye
sockets into creepy positions.

Barry Gillis as the mullet-head

who finds the "Horror
of a Thousand Ugly Brutal Cuts"

video in his refrigerator,

then recommends
the Bestiality Network

and tells a long story
about Scottish teenagers

who kill a fat guy

and suffer the wrath of a live
torso-eating serpent.

Bruce Roach as Fred,

who goes around
examining plastic fish

on the walls, quote,
"Looking for a cockroach snack,"

consuming beers,
and saying random things like,

"Isn't this Salvador Dali's
famous Devil's Daughter painting

believed to have been
burned years ago?"

But then gets sucked
into the third,

fourth, and fifth dimensions
through a hole

in the kitchen cupboard.

Doug Bunston as Doug, who says,

"Really no time for stories,
Don, my wife's dead"

and, "Better watch myself.

I'm not very good
at electricity things",

and "Gimme back my hand!"

And Andrew Jordan,
the director and co-writer,

for lines like,
"I'm gonna shove you right

under the floorboards,
yeah, that should do it"

and, "The blood is just dripping
like maple syrup!"

And "They ate Susan!
They ate her to the skull!"

One star.

You know, we waited till week 8
of the season to do this.

You know we have to
punish you once a year, right?

Just think of it as a workout.

You know, your viewing muscles
will be much stronger

after you endure this.

And remember, you're going
to despise this,

Let's start with
the full-frontal woman

in the devil mask.

Andrew Jordan, the director,
and Barry J. Gillis,

the star -- Barry is the guy
with the mullet

and the mustache -- they decided
they needed nudity in the film,

but their big star,
porn star Amber Lynn,

would not agree to get nekkid
for the measly $2,500

they gave her
for one hour of work.

So they hit the streets
of Toronto

looking for a hooker,
and they found one,

but not before Jan Pachul,
the guy who plays

Dr. Lucas the torturer,

gets arrested
for soliciting prostitution.

So the hooker said
she would get nekkid for 'em,

but she didn't really want her
face to be seen, so they said,

"Okay, well, then we'll put you
in a Halloween mask."

So that was the only reason

apparently that she's wearing
the Halloween mask.

These were
first-time filmmakers.

You're so shocked, right?

And so they didn't realize
that if you just post

a casting notice that says
"some nudity required",

you will get dozens
of applicants.

You don't have to troll
the streets

searching for
women of the night.

So, at any rate, Amber Lynn,
star of 350 X-rated films

and more than 200
nude layouts in magazines,

probably did not realize
that the production values

on her first mainstream
crossover film

would be worse than the cheapest
porn film she ever made.

She came to the set with her
boyfriend/limo driver/agent.

He served as all three.
Triple threat.

And he intimidated everybody
so badly that the filmmakers

were afraid to ask her
to do anything

that she didn't want to do.

Hence the cue cards
are in a weird place

so that she's always
looking off camera

as though she has no idea
where she is.

And she probably didn't have
any idea where she was.

She was actually in Toronto
to appear at

the House of Lancaster,
the first and most famous

fully nude strip club in Canada,

and she was being paid $25,000
a week to dance on stage.

The bigger question, of course,

is why is Amber Lynn
in this movie at all?

What is the purpose?

And, of course,
it's unanswerable.

Just as it's unanswerable

as to why we have
an extended sequence of Doug

searching through a kitchen
cabinet for a pill bottle,

or why Bruce Roach,
the guy who plays Fred,

the guy who looks
like Wolfman Jack

after a three-month coma,

goes through the kitchen
cabinets saying,

"Hmm, hmm."

And then stares
at a plastic fish

and decides that
it's a plastic fish.

Why Fred and Don have
an extended conversation

about beers, Satanism,
and weird TV channels,

why Don puts his jacket
in the freezer,

or why a certain Dr. Lucas
is killing one of his patients

body part by body part.

Of course, you're thinking,

"Well, it will all
be explained later."

No.

It won't be.

Roll the film.

Ah.

Should I talk about
the Casio soundtrack?

No, I think I'll just let it
speak for itself.

You know, This is about
the fourth time

I've watched this movie,
and I have a confession to make.

I own the DVD.

Now that I've seen this, though,

This is a Canadian movie.

And what better Canadian
than the close friend

of "The Last Drive-In,"

star of the AEW wrestling
franchise on TNT,

lead singer in
the metal band Fozzy,

Mr. Chris Jericho,
who has agreed to join us

from his in-home studio
in Tampa, Florida,

to help explain the insanity
called "Things."

You knew your way
around a video store

in the late '80s, early '90s.

This movie was in
every video store

in North America.

How did it get there?

-Joe Bob, this shows you
how much I appreciate

your friendship
and appreciate being on

"The Last Drive In",
and the fact that I showed up

to be a part of this piece of
shit movie called "Things."

This is by far the worst
movie I've ever seen.

And I saw it back in about 1991.

And when I was asked
to be on the show,

I was like,
"Sure, what are we doing?

'Sleepaway Camp 2'?

'Zombie' by Fulci?"

"No, we want you to
do 'Things.'"

And I was like, "You have got to
be F-ing kidding me."

Watching this back,
I am embarrassed to be Canadian

and be associated with
this piece of tripe,

salacious garbage
known as "Things."

I'm saying that first of all,
and I know you know me,

Joe Bob and Darcy,
I go on a rant.

First and foremost,
there's a saying for for fans

of movies like us,
"It's so bad, it's good."

This is not so bad it's good.

This is so bad.
It makes you want to literally

take a drill,
driller killer yourself.

I want to driller killer myself
just thinking about this movie.

And I'm caught in the middle
of it here on

"The Last Drive In",
specifically because

I like you guys.

-Okay, well, you established
yourself the previous time

you were here as the expert on
bad movies.

And so we thought, "We've got
to test him with this."

But the guy who plays Don,
Barry J. Gillis,

he has what is often described
as a hockey-hair mullet,

which I guess must be
a term in Canada.

Can you describe for us
the hockey-hair mullet?

-Well, hockey hair
is what you're seeing.

It's the epitome of,
you know,

business in the front,
party in the back.

But the reason why
it's called "hockey hair"

is because in this time frame,
actually, even now,

if you watch the NHL now,
you put the helmet on

and you see the little tendrils
of hair coming out

of the bottom,
you take the helmet off,

and there's nothing on top
because you don't want

to have sweaty hair,
but you still want to look

like a rock and roller so you
keep a little bit long.

So, yes, the best thing
about "Things"

is Barry J's hockey hair mullet
for sure.

And even that sucks.

-What do you think
of the "Things" themselves,

the actual critters?

I assume the Things are those
furry creatures with teeth,

you know, which we see
from time to time.

-The creatures in this
are terrible.

They're basically like they went
to a Halloween store

and bought ants
and then put some kind of

H.R. Giger teeth on
the front of it.

So I don't know.
I don't know what they are.

I don't know what the things.
Are they aliens?

Are they something that Don
created in a laboratory

with his old sandwiches?

Are they demons from the deep?
Did they come out of the toilet?

It's the literal
drizzling shits

and the fact that we used
to make movies in high school

better than this and the fact
that our movie isn't being

watched on "The Last Drive In",
which was called

"Don't Go to Uncle's Earl's
Cabin For the Weekend,"

featured a serial killer
called "The Bag Man."

Why? Because all we had
was a paper bag.

Cut some holes in it.
There's your serial killer.

The bag man is better
special effects

than the frickin "Things."

-Well, you're assuming we
wouldn't show that, Chris.

We might show that.

as we try to navigate
the deeper meanings

of the first Canadian
straight-to-video indie flick

to attain international
infamy -- "Things."

Roll the movie.

You know, 20 years --
I know. I agree.

20 years after it was made,
they started showing "Things"

in actual movie theaters,

and they invited the star,
Barry Gillis,

to one of those special events.

They had a theater in Montreal
set aside for it.

And as you might expect,
he couldn't stop talking.

Everybody got drunk,
the film broke down twice,

which made it
an even better film.

And speaking of which, I hope
everyone knows this.

Two shots every time
they drink a beer,

one shot for
every creature attack.

I do not want to have
to tell you again.

They actually had
a "no drugs" policy

on the set of "Things."

But they did not have
a "no alcohol" policy.

So they were just drunk,
and they admit they were drunk.

-Wish I was drunk now.

of such hits as

"Dawn of the Dead"
and "Creepshow",

is once again
taking his copyright case

to the Supreme Court
of the United States.

Pirates continue to distribute

thousands of copies of

fishing rod.

When he was young,
they all bothered him

because he was thin
as a toothpick.

And as you got older,
they laughed at him

because he was fatter
than a fridge.

One of the boys took a hammer
to Harold's head.

The claw of the hammer.

And the others slashed
his stomach open with a machete.

Harold died from blows
to the head.

But it wasn't till the machete
slashed him open

that he smiled.

The first time the boys
had ever seen him smile.

At that instant,
out of the flames of hell,

a large serpent like bees burst
out of Harold's bloody stomach

and devoured both killers
and proceeded to consume

everyone else in the town
that it set its eyes upon.

It had a hunger
that couldn't be satisfied

until it every torso
in the town.

movie ever just for fun,

truth is they were trying hard.

So I was like, "Oh, shit."

So when I met Ann-Margaret,
I was like, speechless.

Like, I couldn't even talk
around her, you know?

And he wanted me
to do this one line

about Cecil B. DeMille,

and she walked over and stood
next to the director,

John Frankenheimer,
while I was -- he says,

"Run the line for me,"
and I was like...

He says,

feel real comfortable.

the "Hobo with a Shotgun" guys

said about this movie.

Rob Cotterill, the producer,

said, "I don't know
how to categorize it

or even really
how to process it.

It's just an onslaught

of "Hobo with a Shotgun," said,

"A lot of people say the opening
15 minutes of 'Suspiria'

is like a nightmare
caught on film,

but 'Things'
is actually a nightmare."

about "Things" in a second,

about "Things,"

and why we did it.

You know, it's always fun

to talk about the worst movie
ever made,

and certainly, "Things"
may be a candidate for that,

but maybe we should think about
not being quite so snarky

and start looking at films
like this

as cultural artifacts
that are worth saving

because the only reason
we would watch them at all

is that they were made
with dedication.

but "Things" is entertaining

the people behind the camera,

in front of the camera,

are taking it dead seriously.

If they were goofing off,
we would know it,

and it would just be a lame
exercise, guys messing around.

These guys weren't
messing around.

They were trying
to make a by-god movie,

and maybe they didn't
really make a movie,

in the sense that we think of
movies as having a beginning,

a middle, and an end,
a theme, a through-line,

an emotional arc,
music that serves the story,

but maybe they created
something else in the year 1989

that stands apart, like a piece
of giant avant-garde sculpture

in the middle of a corn field
in Kansas.

Maybe it ispostmodern,
as the director calls it,

because its sophisticated
technological equipment --

cameras, sound equipment,
editing equipment --

in the hands of people

who have no technological
sophistication, you know?

We've heard from
the film-school geeks.

Now we should hear
from these guys, too.

Maybe they are artists
after all,

artists searching for a gallery,

and we were happy to be
that gallery tonight.
