you're gonna rewatch

Season 5 of "The Walking Dead"

because you're trying to
remember what happened

between the escape from Terminus
and the discovery

of the new survivor community
on the Hilltop.

You know, I saw you watching
24 consecutive episodes

of "Friends," Darcy.
That is not right.

That is wrong.
-I have no excuse.

-I can't watch a show
where that many people

are living in the same place

and commenting on one another's
lives all the time.

-You mean kind of like us
right now?

-Yeah. Too real.

-It was on.
I watched it.

-Exactly.
It's on, so you watch it.

One thing I gotta stop doing

is watching
these political talk shows

that are always polling people.

-Oh, I just hang up on them.

-Hang up on who?

-Anyone trying to get
my opinion.

-Well, they're always wrong
anyway.

You know, taking polls assumes

that people tell you the truth,
right?

But people already know
that polling is

some kind of game,
and so they automatically lie.

Some people don't even realize
they're lying to the pollster,

but they are lying.

-They never get my opinion.

-Well, I know, but even if they
did get your opinion --

I mean, think about what happens
when you go to a restaurant.

First you get the menu, right?

You have all these choices.

And then everybody at the table

discusses
what they're gonna order.

You know,
I don't know why people do this.

They could just read the menu
and order, right?

But they feel the need
to discuss

what they're gonna order.

And while they're discussing
what they're gonna order,

they tell you
what they're gonna order.

But first they tell you
what they might order.

"You know,
the pork chops sound good.

I bet you they make a great
hamburger here, though.

Oh, I have hamburger
all the time.

I shouldn't get that here.
What are you having?"

So now the person has suggested
two things he might order,

and he's asked for a third
suggestion from another person.

So the next person says,
"Well, I thought I'd order

the flaming
teriyaki pepper steak."

And the original guy goes,
"Ohhhhh!

Flaming teriyaki pepper steak.

Yeah!
That sounds great!"

And then they talk about it
some more,

and they discuss it some more,

and they go into stuff
about their diet, you know?

"I've probably had
enough red meat for today.

I should look at the salads."

And then they discuss
nine kinds of salads

that they could possibly have.

And then they make a decision.

You know, they go,
"You know what?

I'm gonna try this crabcake dish
with the red sauce."

So end of story, right?

So they fold the menu.
They have a cocktail.

They wait around
till the waiter gets there.

The waiter looks at 'em,

and they say, "I'll have
the pork chops."

In other words, they never order

what they just said
they were gonna order.

You know, half the time,
they don't even order

anything that they've
discussed ordering.

But they're not lying about it.

Two seconds before the waiter
asked 'em the question,

they were certain,
in their heart of hearts,

that they were indeed ordering

the crabcake dish
with the red sauce.

But at the moment of truth,

the stomach sends a message
to the brain,

and they just blurt out,
"Pork chops."

You know?
You see what I'm saying here?

You know, there are three kinds
of opinion polls --

polls that you take at the stage
when the menus are passed out

and you're
looking over the choices,

polls that you take at the stage

when you ask other people
for their suggestions,

and polls that you take
at the moment

when you make your final
decision and announce it.

The only time you can't take
a poll

is the moment when you order.

By then, it's too late.

In other words, opinion polls
assume that the person

answering the pollster's
question knows what he wants.

Which, of course, he never does.

You know,
he wants the pork chops.

He just hasn't
figured that out yet.

And, speaking
of unexpected life choices,

nothing like a fast-moving
zombie apocalypse

to ruin your plans,
and we've got the ultimate

"Giant Corporate Biotech Firm
Makes a Boo-Boo" plot tonight.

A film that pretty much scores
100% in all opinion polls.

I don't think I've ever found
a single person

who doesn't love this movie.

Of course, you know
what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about
"Train to Busan,"

the South Korean thriller

that took the festivals by storm
in 2016

and then rampaged
through the horror universe

like an out-of-control
virus on a runaway train.

But surprisingly, we're still
finding people

who have not yet discovered it,

so we're showing it tonight
in all its two-hour glory,

and since there are those
people who don't yet know

how a train movie and a zombie
movie are connected,

I'll leave the plot details
till later

and just say that, ever since
"The Isle" in the year 2000,

the Koreans have been figuring
out new ways to do horror,

and we should be grateful to
guys like Yeon Sang-ho,

the writer/director,
for taking tired American themes

and injecting them
with new life.

Who thought you could do
an original zombie story

in the year 2016?
But he did.

And, by the way, when we talk
about this movie tonight,

I would like to give out
the names in the Western style,

with the given name first,
surname second,

but, you know, like, the
director's last name is "Yeon,"

so he would be called
Yeon Sang-ho in Korea.

In IMDB, they call him
Sang-ho Yeon,

and the only reason
that I'm not doing that

is because
it's a sensitive issue.

It's a cross-cultural thing.

And so we're gonna give
the last name first,

and then the first name
after the last name.

All right,
did I totally confuse you?

All right, let's look
at those "Drive-In" totals.

We have...91 dead bodies.

9,000 undead bodies.

15 full-bore
zombie-attack set pieces.

4 motor vehicle crashes.

One runaway train.

One reanimated zombie deer.

Zombies falling out of
helicopters.

Zombies climbing all over cars.

Zombies flying through windows.

Zombies bursting out
of train cars.

Zombies falling off roofs.

Military zombies with weapons.

Cities on fire.

Baseball bat Fu.

"Drive-In" Academy Award
nominations for...

Gong Yoo as the fund manager
turned zombie killer;

Kim Su-an as the unbearably cute
10-year-old daughter;

Sohee, as the schoolgirl
in love;

Ma Dong-seok as the
working-class loudmouth fighter;

Jung Yu-mi
as the pregnant woman;

and Yeon Sang-ho,
the writer/director,

for doing things
the "Drive-In" way

in a country that has only had
drive-ins since 1995.

Can you believe that?

that our leviathan
mother company, AMC,

has announced the end
of "Walking Dead"?

You know, speaking of zombies.

Can you believe that?

I mean, they only did --
I don't know -- 978 episodes.

I was just getting into it.

You know, how will we even

get to know the main characters
at this point?

[Laughter]

Actually they're not really
killing it.

They're doing 24 episodes
in the last season,

but those episodes are airing
over a two-year period,

and then they're announcing
two spin-off series,

which will bring
the total number

of "Walking Dead" spin-offs
to four.

So, you know, half of
the "Last Drive-In" audience

is "Walking Dead" people.

And I don't mean people
who watch "The Walking Dead."

I mean people who have been
on "The Walking Dead."

They employed every actor
in Atlanta

at least nine times each,
you know.

That thing is shot in Atlanta.

You know, that thing just eats
actors like a zombie virus.

When you apply for any job
in television,

the first question they ask is

"How many episodes of
'Walking Dead' have you done?"

If it's less than five,
you're an amateur.

-Obviously we're dealing with
a new type of zombie here.

These are fast zombies.

And, yeah, I know -- We saw
those before in "World War Z,"

but the zombies were about
the only interesting thing

about that "World War Z."

There is no justice in the world

when "World War Z" makes
more money than this movie.

One thing you'll notice
about these zombies

is that their bodies can contort

into all sorts
of different positions,

and that part of the film
is not CGI.

They do use CGI,
but the weird movements

are the creation of a
choreographer named Park Jae-in,

who is herself a gymnast
and a dancer,

and she runs
a pole dance academy in Seoul.

I didn't know there was such
a thing,

but God bless her for that.

And she's done choreography
for a lot of movies

and for a lot of pop singers,

but her zombie training
for this movie was extensive.

The training to be
a featured zombie

required two to three months
of work in her studio,

and she trained
about 20 to 30 actors at a time.

She had done zombie movement

for one previous movie,
"The Wailing,"

but it wasn't anything like
the scale of this movie.

The director, Yeon Sang-ho,
made an early decision --

He said that there had to be
a fundamental difference

between Asian zombies
and American zombies,

and he compared it
to superhero movies.

He said, "If an American actor
appears in spandex, it's fine,

but if a Korean actor does,
it looks weird."

And what he meant was that the
makeup and costuming decisions

made in the West
don't always work in Asia.

And he thought
American zombie movies

were too focused on makeup,

so he said, "I'm gonna focus on
movement instead of makeup,"

and decided to spend
a whole lot of time

choreographing the action.

So what do we know about
these zombies?

We know that their origin

is from a biotech factory
in a rural area.

That's the whole purpose
of showing the deer

that becomes a zombie deer.

A beautiful image, by the way.
That's an amazing moment.

We know that the leaders
and business people in Korea

know exactly where
the zombie outbreak started,

because in the opening scene,

we see the fund manager
selling all his stock.

It's because he knows
the so-called "small leak"

is not small at all.

He has inside information.

We know that the time between
being bitten by a zombie

and turning zombie yourself
is just a few minutes.

And we know
that they attack in packs.

And the more of them
that gather together,

the more rabid they get,
so the effect is that victims

get torn apart
like a pack of wild dogs.

And we know that they rely
on their eyesight.

They have to see you
to want you.

They react to movement.

That one scene where the zombies
go crazy in the car

that's full of
the high-school baseball team,

that's just a foreshadowing
of what we're gonna see later.

These were extremely complicated
scenes to photograph.

They sometimes required
20 takes for each moment

so that the focus
could be adjusted

and the room could --

you know, space could be left
in there for the CGI later.

Only a guy with a background
in animation

would have the eye
and the patience for this,

and that's exactly
what Yeon Sang-ho was.

He had made dozens
of animated movies.

He made two animated features,

and they weren't the kind
of flicks

we associate with animation
in the West.

They were
adult-themed social dramas.

Very bleak.

His combination of live action
with animated action with CGI

is what made the magic
of this movie possible.

Okay, let's get back to it.

Zombies outside the train,
zombies inside the train.

He's reduced
the available safe space

to a single passenger car --

a tiny patch of real estate

that's the only sanctuary
in this universe.

Roll the film.

♪♪

You know what? I'm not
a big fan of pole dancing,

but I'm not surprised that
the first pole dancing academy

[Laughs] is in Korea.

The actress who plays the
schoolgirl, her name is Sohee.

She was already famous

for being in a K-pop group
called Wonder Girls.

And Korea kind of owns the
acrobatic erotic dance category.

You know, girl groups
and boy groups.

They must teach that stuff
in elementary school.

But if you look at
the user comments on IMDB,

half of them
are just praise for Sohee,

which, come on, guys, kind
of a minor supporting character.

And they call her
"that cheerleader girl."

It's not a cheerleader outfit.

It's just a school uniform.

But I guess the Wonder Girls
were so famous

that guys just fixate
on that one character.

Of course, if this was
a Jim Wynorski film,

she would be a cheerleader.

There'd be a whole train car
full of cheerleaders.

They'd be
on a cheerleader outing.

You know, there would be
no baseball team.

We would have cheerleaders
in every scene.

You know,
"Train to Cheerleader Camp."

You know, running underneath
the main story here,

we have an obvious
class-warfare subtext,

with our main character,
the fund manager,

getting special treatment --

friends in high places who tell
him some secret way to get

to a place of safety
that no one else knows about,

while the burly, brusque husband
of the pregnant woman

instinctively knows
that he's a "bloodsucker,"

and even his own daughter,

still untainted
by the corruption of society,

knows that just might be true
of her father.

So as you'll see,
as the story progresses,

the subtitle of this movie
could be

"The Education of Seok-woo,"

Seok-woo
being the character name

of
the fund manager/absent daddy.

That actor is well known
to Korean audiences.

His name is Gong Yoo,

and he's been a Korean star
for more than a decade,

ever since he had
a popular breakout role

in a 2007 TV series where
he played a romantic lead.

He actually had two other
hit movies in the year 2016.

One of those
was "The Age of Shadows,"

which was the official
South Korean entry

in the Academy Awards
for Best Foreign Film.

We're not yet at the stage
where Korea

would nominate a zombie film
for that distinction.

But here's
the interesting thing.

Gong Yoo is a super athlete,
known for doing his own stunts.

Rock climber, skydiver.

He studies a particular
Russian martial arts system

called Systema,

and his personal trainer
for martial arts

happens to be Ma Dong-seok,

the actor who plays
the abrasive chubby husband

of the pregnant woman,
who hates him in this movie.

Ma Dong-seok emigrated
with his family

to America in the year 2000,
when he was just 19 years old,

and he became a mixed martial
arts trainer for Mark Coleman,

who was one
of the very first champions

in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He also trained another
UFC champion, Kevin Randleman.

And both of those guys
became pro wrestlers

after they retired
from mixed martial arts.

Unfortunately
Randleman died early.

He died at the age of just 44.

Anyway, Ma Dong-seok is
well known to Korean audiences.

Often plays a heavy, almost
always in a supporting role,

but beloved nevertheless.

And as you can see,
great chemistry

between Gong Yoo
and his former teacher.

Okay, let's get back
to the 2016 Korean mega-hit,

"Train to Busan."

Gong Yoo is a very private guy,

doesn't do any social media
at all,

and so there have not been
that many interviews with him,

but I saw one where he was asked

whether making the movie
was scary at all.

And he said, "Yeah, it was
a little scary working

with some
of the more athletic zombies,"

but the scariest part of it
for him

was thinking that someday he
might have a daughter like that,

and it made him
totally freaked out

by the responsibility
of raising a child.

So good luck with that,
Gong Yoo.

Movie stars never have
any problem raising children.

As we have all noticed
over and over again,

for, like, the past century.

So, yeah,
that'll be a piece of cake.

This may be my favorite part
of the movie.

There are so many
excellent dramatic sequences

that it's hard
to choose just one,

but the combination of writing,

character depth,
and zombie effects right here

is hard to match.

With very specific geography.

They're four cars away
from their loved ones.

They're gonna have to fight
through the zombie zones.

It's a classic situation
from the old Westerns,

where you have to cross
the wild frontier

to get to the townspeople
that are in peril.

And it's three people
who do not belong together.

The brusque working-class guy
takes charge.

The baseball kid is too young
and in love

to know he's facing death.

And it's the star of the movie

who seems the least useful guy
right now

as they wrap their hands

and they get ready to party
with the undead horde.

I also think the sequence

in the Daejeon train station
is incredible --

the way the swarms of zombies
force the disembarkers

back up the stairs
and the escalators,

and then the military rescuers,
they turn zombie,

and they double the attack,

and then the way the
last three people we care about

barely make it
back onto that moving train.

The station they stop in,
by the way, Daejeon,

that's where all the trains
from all directions converge

because it's smack-dab
in the middle of South Korea

and it's halfway between Seoul
and Busan,

which is on the seacoast.

So they use that huge station,

which would normally have dozens
of trains moving through it,

but today it's a ghost station

about to be swallowed up
by a zombie horde.

There's also
a major turning point here

that almost gets lost
because of all the action,

and that's when the little girl
realizes her dad

has secret information

and that they're going to
a place of private safety

without telling the others,

and she says,
"This is why Mommy left."

Ooh.

You know,
every place in the movie

where there's a choice
between self-sacrifice

and self-protection, the dad
makes the wrong decision,

and his daughter zings him
about it and, you know.

Until now.

Something about that last zinger
hit home.

I'm not sure
exactly why the director

entitled the film
"Train to Busan"

instead of, say,
"Train to Daegu,"

which is another major city
in the country,

since the train
could be going anywhere

and you could have
the same plot.

But it could possibly
have something to do

with the Busan International
Film Festival,

which is the largest
film festival in Asia

and which is held every October

and which is the launching pad
for many Asian films

that go on to achieve
an international following.

I gotta think
"Train to Busan" as a title

is bound to gain attention
at the Busan Film Festival,

but as it turns out, he didn't
have to worry about that,

'cause he was chosen
for a special midnight screening

at the Cannes Film Festival
earlier in the year.

So pretty soon the film
was being booked

into every country in the world,
including India,

where it became
the first Korean film

to have a nationwide theatrical
release, as well as Hong Kong,

where it became
the most successful Asian film

ever released there.

It played art houses and
specialty theaters in America

and never seemed to quite
break out beyond that.

And I'm not sure why.

You know, maybe because zombies

were reaching their saturation
point in this country,

and so when you read
the synopsis,

you just have this "been there,
done that" reaction to it.

At any rate, it ended up making
100 million bucks

at the box office, which,
for a Korean film --

totally unheard of.

All right, great sequence
coming up right now

as they fight their way to
their wife, daughter, and lover.

The men of Korea fighting
through to their women.

And the odds are against them.

Roll it.

The other reason they might
wanna use Busan is that,

in Korea, that's a tourist
destination, you know?

A million people a year go there
just to eat the fish cakes.

And I don't know
what fish cakes are,

but I have to think it's some
version of a salmon croquette.

That's the only thing I know
that they'd call a fish cake.

Their other Busan specialty
is raw sliced mackerel.

You have to go there to eat it
'cause you're supposed to eat it

immediately after
it comes out of the water,

so you won't get sick, you know.

Pull it out of the net, eat it.

They don't say this, but I think
if your raw sliced mackerel

gets a little too old,
like, six hours or so,

you end up with Busan Tummy,

and since raw sliced mackerel

sounds a little dodgy
to begin with,

I gotta think that's painful.

Nobody wants mackerel malady,
right?

I don't even have to comment
on it, I don't think.

An action sequence that was full
of that much intense emotion.

Character and plot
working together seamlessly.

Great piece of writing,
perfectly directed.

Yeon Sang-Ho, the director
and writer, is a painter.

That's his college major.

And his early career was devoted
to animation.

His debut film was called
"Megalomania of D,"

an animated film
about an artist who goes crazy.

In 2011 he got a lot
of international attention

for a film
called "King of Pigs,"

an autobiographical film about
being bullied in middle school.

He made a film
called "The Fake,"

about an outcast who challenges
a bogus evangelical preacher

in a small town.

But the market
for serious animated films

is painfully small,

and so he eventually decided
to move over to live action,

and "Train to Busan"
was his first effort.

So I think you can see all the
animation influences, though.

He attempts things
you wouldn't normally try,

especially when depicting
the zombie hordes.

And it turned out to be
a good decision.

He followed it up with another
live-action movie in 2018,

called "Yeom-lyeok."

I don't think it was ever
released in the United States,

but it's being billed
as the first

South Korean superhero film.

Of course, every North Korean
film is a superhero film

because it's intended to worship
the superpowers of Kim Jong-un.

But, anyway, Yeon Sang-ho

did this film
about a bank security guard

who gains superpowers one day
after drinking water

from a mountain spring
that's been zapped by a meteor.

And then he uses psychokinesis
to fight the local mafia,

who control
a construction company

that's threatening
his estranged daughter.

So once again with
the estranged daughter theme.

I assume psychokinesis is
the same thing as telekinesis,

which means manipulating objects
with your mind.

Anyway, I hope it eventually
makes it to this country,

but I'm gonna make it a point

to go back and watch all those
famous animated dramas, as well.

I should also mention
Park Joo-Suk,

his co-writer
on "Train to Busan."

He has one other credit.

He wrote a movie
called "Hwayi: A Monster Boy."

"Hwayi: A Monster Boy."
In 2013.

There's a whole heck
of a lot of weird filmmaking

going on in Korea,
and that's a good thing.

That's a great thing.

Okay, let's get back
to the flick.

This is like zombies
on an epic scale.

And Korea does that, you know?

The other thing they do
on an epic scale is churches.

Like, in the U.S., we have that
Joel Osteen church in Houston --

40,000 members,
so we think, man alive,

that is
one big humongous church.

But in South Korea, they have
a church with 830,000 members.

[Laughter]

One church.

And they're Pentecostals.

They're tongue-talkers.

You know,
I don't know about you,

but 830,000 people
talking in tongues

in one building at one time --

We're gonna need the director
of "Train to Busan"

just to do the animation
on that.

Then we're gonna need
Michael Bay

to do the special effects
on that.

And then we're gonna need

the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration

to do the sound,

because they don't just hear
that in heaven --

They hear that
in the Andromeda galaxy.

being dragged behind that train.

The sacrifice
by the high-school lover

so he can die
in his beloved's arms.

The sacrifice by the engineer

trying to save
the selfish businessman.

And, by the way, the actor
who plays the businessman

is veteran actor Kim Eui-sung,

and the actor who plays
the baseball-playing boyfriend

is Choi Woo-sik.

And both are well known
in Korea.

So, if this were
an American film,

we would be five minutes away
from the ending.

The daughter is saved.
The pregnant woman is saved.

The dad will now fight
the selfish CEO to the death

in a symbolic struggle
of good versus evil,

and the three of them
will coast slowly to safety.

But this director

wants to go about
three levels deeper than that.

He wants to take us to places
we never thought we would reach

when we started watching
a zombie movie.

I'm gonna let it run
to the end now.

The heartbreakingly wonderful
conclusion to...

"Train to Busan."

And if you don't cry,
you're dead.

You need to be checked
for zombiism.

Roll it.

I say this as a guy who rarely
tears up over movies, but damn.

You know, it's always said
when we have

these Korean-American
cross-cultural exchanges

of various types
that we need to understand

the cultural differences
between the two countries

in order
to understand one another.

And not really.

This movie proves
we all live in the same place.

I remember when I just got out
of college

and friends of mine were joining
the Peace Corps,

and I was considering it myself.

We all wanted to go
to whichever was considered

the coolest country to live in.

So a lot of people went to Fiji

or one of the African countries
or Kabul.

At that time, Afghanistan

was considered exotic
and drug-friendly.

And it wasn't considered violent
or dangerous at all.

But most of the jobs
were in Korea.

Because Korea always had
a shortage of English teachers.

Tens of thousands of people
wanted to learn English,

and the Peace Corps was trying
to make that available.

And the potential
Peace Corps people,

most of them,
they didn't wanna go to Korea.

It didn't sound exotic.
It didn't sound fun.

But today, if you talked to
those people who did go to Korea

for a five-year deployment,
sometimes more,

they love that country more than
they love their own hometown.

And I think we've learned
since then

the Koreans are often
more American than Americans.

And now, with a zombie movie
like this out there,

we oughta start trying to be
more Korean than the Koreans.

For one thing, they use CGI
a lot better than we do.

For another thing, they're
not afraid to do the ending

that you don't really want,
but the ending you need.

So watch this.

Jung Yu-mi is the actress who
played the pregnant survivor.

She had co-starred with Gong Yoo
once before.

The two of them starred together

in an acclaimed film in 2011
called "Silenced,"

a docudrama based on true events
about a deaf school

where the students were sexually
and physically assaulted

over a long period of time.

She played
a human rights activist,

and Gong Yoo played a teacher,

and they work together
to end the abuse.

The little girl in "Train to
Busan" was played by Kim Su-an.

She's been in a dozen films
since 2011. Great actress.

"Train to Busan" ended up being

the sixth-highest grossing
domestic film of all time

in South Korea.

Grossed $100 million worldwide.

One month after it was released,
the same director

released an animated prequel
called "Seoul Station."

Of course, all the studios
started bidding

on the English-language remake
rights,

and Gary Dauberman is currently
writing the script for that.

He's the guy
who wrote "Annabelle"

and the latest version of "It."

Unfortunately, Yeon Sang-ho
got talked into doing a sequel

that was originally called
"Train to Busan 2,"

but was released last year
under the title "Peninsula,"

and it got kind of bad reviews.

It wasn't really related
to the original story.

It takes place four years
after the zombie devastation

when a soldier returns to Korea

who had been overseas
the whole time.

And they went
full-scale Michael Bay with it.

It's all effects, no emotion.

This happens a lot
when you're not really ready

to write the sequel, but there's
enormous financial pressure

on you to write the sequel,

and so you hurry it up,
and you make compromises.

Anyway, come on over, Darcy.

on "Train to Busan"?
