third generation builder,

My team and I are building
on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
a rock for nothing!

We fight the elements year-round
to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it.

(Randy): It's the weekend.

You'd think we'd want a break
from each other, but not us.

- Could've come back farther!

- We love an adventure.

- It just fits.

- The whole team, you know,

we're all gettin' together
going for a bike ride.

So, we're leaving from Brigus,
driving four hours

down to Argentia.

Find a place. Sit on the beach.
Have a boil up.

It's the thing we usually do,
you know, around Newfoundland,

and it's a thing that
all the team gets together.

You know,
so many projects on the go.

So much stress in the week.

It's good to get on the bikes,
go for a run.

Leave it all behind.

Watch out!

- Super early!

Nice day off, and we're rolling
in at the normal time, 7 AM.

Gettin' ready to go.

But hey, nobody minds
taking a day off

to get a good quad ride in.

Right on Newfie tradition.

- It's a hard, you know,
thing to say

if it's worth getting up
this early to go for a ride,

but you know,
when we gets out there

and we gets a good meal cooking,

all that'll be forgotten about.

- Let's see, some Newfie Steak.

Some mac and cheese.

And end it off
with some chocolate.

- You enjoy yourself.

There's a boil-up,
fine feed, good laugh.

- Yeah, we work

We're like a big family.

(Randy): The four-hour ride
across the Avalon

to the beach is a perfect time
to clear your head.

(indistinct shouting)

The past year has been busier
than ever for me and my crew.

We started and finished
some amazing projects

in Brigus and beyond.

I'd say we've had some
happy clients.

- Wow. Oh, wow!

- Oh!
(laughing)

- This is fabulous.

- Ah!

- Oh, wow!
- Look at that!

- I love it.

(Randy): So, yeah, it's time
for a little celebration.

We work hard,
time to play hard too.

We made it!

There's nothing better.
It's beautiful.

Look, the mountains, the ocean.

We're at the edge
of North America.

Start a fire. Have a big feed.

Who wouldn't want to do this?

I definitely can't talk
to you anymore.

We're hungry. Cook some food!

(upbeat music)

(indistinct chattering)

- Lonely man baloney.

(whistling)

- Randy's not a bad cook.

- She never said
I was a good one.

(laughing)

- Yeah, that's what I asked.

- What d'you got, a taster
on the go yet or what?

- Nope. No tasters.
- Oh! Look!

The first one, I told you,

your hand in the pot helping,
but not any tasters.

- A long ride.
Everybody's hungry.

So, we got some chowder.
Moose sausages.

Some fish and brews over there.
Some bacon, baloney.

(Paul): Macaroni and cheese?

- Eh...

For the old man, anyway.

- I'm gonna cook the toutons.

Nice easy job. Definitely
a Newfoundland tradition.

Basically, it's just bread dough
fried up in a frying pan.

And Paul stood up doing nothing.
We gotta get him on a job.

(laughing)

I said get in and get at
something, Paul.

- I brought you the sausage.
That's good enough.

What'd you bring?
- You gotta cook 'em too!

Oh, look at that!

- Toutons.

(Randy): The day was awesome.

You know, we started in Brigus,
four-hour drive on the quads.

Everybody had a good time.

Had a boil up.

Now we're playing
some axe throwing.

What better of a day
can you ask for?

No.

(shouting, cheering)

- Come on. Sink your bull's-eye!

(laughing, cheering)
- Bull's-eye!

Show you how it's done, huh?

- The rookie!

(Randy): Back to work, and back

to one of my biggest
projects in Brigus...

My mom's house.

Since my dad and I have
been building it ourselves,

with some help from
the rest of the team,

our budget is $200,000.

The house has two bedrooms,
one for my mom,

and the other
for the kids when they visit.

It's an open-concept layout,

and the kitchen looks out
over the forest.

So you have a cabin
in the woods feel.

I really wanted this to be
the perfect place

for the family to get together,

and that's exactly
what it's going to be.

The stakes are high,
because I wanna make Mom happy.

Building this place has been
a personal project

for me and my dad,
that started as a tree lot

that we cleared.

Watch your noggins!

Then we dug for the foundation,
and got the footings in

before Snowmaggedon buried it
in snow for the whole winter.

I ain't moving that.
(laughing)

But once spring came,

the crew's been helping us
to get back on track.

It's been a lot of work
to get to this point,

but now it's finally ready
for some finishing touches.

So, I called in Sam and Sasha,

who I've worked with on
many projects before,

to really help me with some
final details

to make this house
extra special for Mom.

- Ah, this is so fantastic.

- Oh, this is great, Randy!

- Wow.

- So, this has been me
and my father's

weekend project,
trying to get my mom in.

Now I gotta get it done,
and I gotta make sure

that this is gonna be perfect.

- Yeah, I love the layout.

Nice and open, yeah.
- I love the trims.

- Love the trims.
It's my favourite.

- The wood trim, it's gonna be

pine stained the same colour
as the floor,

because we're going
with a herringbone throughout.

- Oh, I love that.
- Love that colour.

I love that you're doing
the herringbone pattern.

It's gonna look so cool.

You're really taking that
wood feeling from the outside,

and bringing it into your house.
- Yeah, definitely,

and this is only primed now.

So, we need a little bit of help
on the colour of the space.

- Yeah, keeping it light in here
is gonna be important.

- Exactly. You can bring pops
of colour in your furnishings.

- So, you're saying
all the walls, keep them white?

- Yeah, definitely!
Your features are gonna pop out.

So that wood element is really
gonna be the showstopper.

(light music)

(Randy): This is gonna be
the living area.

- I'm thinking for
the fireplace bump out here,

maybe doing like,
an accent colour.

- Yeah.
- Definitely.

- Right? The rest of your
walls are all white.

- True that.
- Maybe do a focal point

so they stand out.
And then maybe with that colour,

we can tie that in
with our furniture.

- Yes.
- I'm thinking with the space,

we can maybe look at having
like, a sofa back here.

- Sofa back here.
- End tables.

- Maybe two chairs over here.

A nice rug, ground the space.

Bring in some colour.
- For sure.

- Great place for the kids
to run around?

- Perfect.

(Randy): And I got
the kids' room started,

but my mom's...
that's a tough one.

So, this is the main bedroom.

- Beautiful.
- Oh, this is a great space.

- Do have any ideas
for the design in here,

what you wanna do?
- I have nothing!

(laughing)
This isn't my specialty,

so I'm gonna leave that to you.
- We'll take care

of your mom's room, no problem.

- Well, it takes
a whole load off of us.

It's been frozen in time,
so we gotta speed this up.

So, I'll let you make
the decisions,

and I'll just go get to work.
- Okay, sounds good. Let's go.

(upbeat folk music)

(Randy): With Sam and Sasha now
working on my mom's house...

that frees me up to take on
a new project in Bay Roberts.

My company is always happy
to lend a hand to the community.

This church is a big
part of this area.

You can see it for miles
across the bay,

so this one's extra special.

I love anything that's old.

Like, this church
was built in the 1900s.

It's just amazing how
they built it years ago.

So, anything we can do to
help to fix it up

and keep that alive,
it's pretty cool.

(upbeat music)

We gotta fix the bell tower.
There's some screens

that are blown off.

Just over time,
and the wind on 'em,

and the birds picking at it,
it got a lotta use and abuse.

So, we got the lift here.

We're getting up,
fixing them screens.

Just trying to prevent
that to happen again.

- Going up in the lift today.
We gotta do some work here.

I'm not too bad with
the heights. It's the swaying.

(Randy): We got Paul
driving the lift.

And we got Nikki and Josh
going up in the basket.

So, they're the ones
that's gonna be hands on

fixing the screens.

This is a good little
project for them

to actually get that experience
of getting that height

and getting what it feels like.

It's like riding a bike
for the first time.

- So the tip's gotta be flush
with this basket?

- There's always concerns
when you're dealing, you know,

50, 55 feet up in the air.

The weather here
is always windy.

You know, it's gusting probably
50, 60 here now today.

And no matter what way
the wind is blowing,

it's blowing down here.

We're always fighting
against it,

because no matter what
you're doing,

everything is blowing
outta yer hand.

(Randy): We started a new job
repairing the screens

on a church bell tower
50 feet in the air.

It's the windiest spot
in Bay Roberts.

- Oh, okay, so gotta be
perfectly flush, okay.

(Randy): In the last year,
Nikki's made a ton of progress.

She's losing more of that
rookie tag on each job,

but today is a whole
new challenge for her.

Nikki's going to new heights
for this one.

When you get up, that thing
is gonna start swaying.

Definitely when the wind goes,
and now look,

it's getting miserable
over there.

Nikki, are you nervous?
(laughing)

- My biggest worry today
is the wind and the sway.

I'm a bit nervous
when the sway kicks in.

It hits your stomach hard.
You gotta kinda be on your toes.

- It's like being on a boat.
- Yeah. You gotta have a lot...

- She'll have her sea legs
before the end of the day.

- Absolutely.
(Randy chuckling)

(microphone feedback)

- I think she's
a little bit nervous.

A little bit.
- Go on. She's petrified.

- Her knees is shaking.

- That's good!

- Now, can you get me? Hey? No?

Well, we'll just do S.O.S.
- Ha ha.

(Randy laughing)

Are you not coming up for one
little look with us first?

- Nothing to look at!

- It was nice
knowing you, buddy.

- We'll joke around, but we
don't want anyone to get hurt.

Josh is going up with Nikki too,

and we'll make sure
they're all hooked on

and they can communicate
back and forth.

- That's what I said to Josh.
- As soon as you feel...

That's why I wanna
have the radios.

You don't need that.
I'm gonna take that one off.

Hey, I wouldn't
go anymore up tilting.

I wouldn't tilt

(Randy): How was it?

- No.

- Yeah. The stabilizer
is coming up!

- Hey, you got her done or what?
How you're down here?

- No.
- Why not?!

- Because you were all
down here drinking coffee

and we were up there
blowing away!

- Look, even the crows
are wondering what you're at.

(Paul): Waiting
for it to rain.

(Randy): Break time's over,

and so is Nikki's fear
of the sway.

That's awesome.

So, it's back at her
to finish the job,

and then we can call it a day.

(folk music)

(saw whirring)
So, all hands on deck.

We got a lot of people
in the shop

just because we got
a whole lot of projects

and a lot of stuff to get done
before the winter.

Including my mom's place.

She's been renting a place
until we're finished

building her house.

I'm pushing hard on the weekends
to get it all done.

We got the kitchen
cabinets built,

so that was a big thing
off the list.

Dive right in.

And we started painting. Well...

kind of.
(laughing)

My mom loves the kids.

So they're getting a room
across the hall

when they stay over with Nan
for sleepovers.

And I thought
I'd make some beds

that are like tents,

and some giant
night lights for the wall.

They're gonna look like clouds.

All I gotta do is build them.

(upbeat music)

We're actually gonna make 'em
raised off the wall,

put some LED lighting behind it,

and the actual cloud
stepping at different

widths off the wall.

It'll give a nice glow.
It'll look pretty catty.

We gotta shingle Tony's roof.
- Yup.

- Been a long time
on that roof, though.

We shingled that,
what probably...

- I'd say roughly like,
17, 18 years ago.

- Time flies.
- Mm-hmm.

- I remember that was one
of the first jobs

that you let me have
a little bit of control

instead of just being a helper.
- Mm-hmm.

- Graduate from being a rookie
to actually cuttin' some wood.

Nailing stuff on.
- I know.

- So, were you nervous
letting me...?

You know, she never blew down
or fell down,

so me nailing them walls on...
Pshht, must have been good.

- You done a good job,
but I'm still nervous

right now, today,
worried for your safety.

- God...

- That's it. Father, son.

You always worry.

- Oh, yeah.
- Yes.

But you're getting better.

Another 10, 15 years,
you'll be as good as me.

(laughing)

- What?!

(upbeat music)

(Randy): Well, I must have
done something right.

Tony's place is still standing.

But the roof?
That's another story.

So it's time to fix it.

Yeah, so we're here
shingling today.

This is one of the very first
houses that I actually worked on

with the old man,
and grandfather, and me uncle.

So, it means a lot here.

And now we're
re-shingling it again!

(upbeat music)

The roof is in such
bad condition.

The last time we had
a big rainstorm,

actually, a little bit
of water got inside.

So, this is very urgent
to get it all fixed.

It put a little bit
of a wrench in our timeline

plus our schedule.

- We're gonna flip it
and put it on top.

Okay.

- First section straightened
away yet, Nikki?

- Almost. I'm downhill
a little bit,

but that don't bother me
if it don't bother you.

- Most important
is you level this way.

- Okay.

- We got the whole team.
Paul and Nikki's on the roof,

so they're taking all
the old shingles off

and putting new shingles on.

And then we got Cody and Al
on the ground.

They're trying to prep all
the shingles,

get 'em gummed,

and actually get them
up to Paul and Nikki.

The thing about shingling,
everybody gotta be in sync.

Hey, Nikki? How come
Paul's side looks clean?

- I was busy
setting up scaffold.

- Ah.

- Don't go startin'
with no rookie talk.

- That's what they call it.

(upbeat music)

We got a very small window
to get this done.

Just yesterday,
it was white in St. John's.

Coming out here,
we don't have much,

because we're at a lower
sea level, but it's coming.

Once the wind picks up
or the weather changes,

yeah, we're... we're backlogged.

But, hey, we gotta try
to get it all done.

The big challenge with this one,
it's a 12 on 12 roof.

That's a 45-degree pitch.

Good for shedding rain
and snow...

but a challenge to shingle
because it's steep.

Where the house is located,
beautiful views.

You got a pond on one side.

Ocean on the other.

But that comes with a price.
It's windy.

When the wind kicks up,
especially coming off the ocean,

it can blow shingles around,
it can blow planks.

You think about it now,
you're probably like

30 feet in the air.

You're up there
on a 45-degree angle

trying to hold on,
on a calm day,

but when it's like gusting
80 to 100, it's not too nice.

- Easy.

- A shingled roof out here
next to the ocean,

you're lucky to get,
like, 15 years.

If you were inland,

you'd probably get,
like, 20, 25 years.

That's the breaks of being
here on the ocean.

In this area, extra gumming,
extra nails is a must.

If not, we'll be picking 'em up
in the pond or in the ocean

come another day or so.

(Randy): In Bay Roberts,

we've been working
on the church

helping with some maintenance.

It can be seen for miles.

And being on the hill,
it can get hit by strong winds.

So we fixed the screens
on the bell tower,

and now we're going underground.

We're bracing up this floor
in the basement in the church.

The old floor joists
got a bit of bounce

and its right where
everybody walks up the aisle.

So, what we gotta do,
we gotta put a beam

to brace all that up.

As you see, them beams
are 100 years old.

They're cut all over the place.

It's a lot of span
on them old logs.

To reinforce the floor,
we gotta attach a 50-foot long,

two by ten beam to the joists.

We'll build forms
for concrete pads

and install posts between
the beam and the pads.

And that'll be the extra
support needed

for another 100 years.

Nothing's level,
nothing's square.

Trying to work with it.
Other than that, though,

Harv, it's going well.

- We'll get it done today.

We got our holes dug
for our concrete footing,

so this concrete
is to hold the jack posts,

and then it'll go up
to our beam.

That's the reason why
we got it dug down right here.

Alright...

I'll get me nail bag.

(upbeat music)

We got a span of 50 feet...

(Al): I got this end.
You go to the end.

...and we'll sister 'em
together two by ten

with glue and nails
to make the support beam.

So, uh, we got the beam up
in place.

We got the pads made
for the footings.

The concrete's coming.
We'll get them poured.

(truck beeping)

We're gonna take it by buckets
and carry it in.

It's all muscle.

(Randy): It's the only option
getting concrete in here.

We can only use buckets,
just because

there's not enough room
to get a wheelbarrow

or cement truck in,
so many hands make light work.

We got the cement poured,

so we'll just make a little
flat surface here,

and wait for the cement to cure,

and lay the posts on,
then we're good to go.

(upbeat music)

Back in Brigus
at my mom's new place,

it may not look like
a big job,

but it's an important one
to finish a house.

It's the trim work.

The custom window boxes
are in and stained.

The rich colour adds
that woodsy feel,

which... what I was going for.

But we still need
to trim out the windows.

And Al's like the old man.

He got the patience to do it.

- Windows can be
a challenge, yes.

It's just a matter of taking
a little bit of time

and extra time to do it,
and it's perfect.

I'm not afraid
of a challenge, no.

I'll get it done.

I don't mind
working for Randy.

You know, he just got
stuff that gotta be done,

he'll tell you what gotta
be done, you go do it.

Other than that,
he's pretty good, normally.

Or to me, anyway.
I dunno about anybody else,

but to me he's good.
(laughing)

Maybe he's afraid of me.
I don't know.

(Randy): Down on the Bay,
the winds have picked up.

But we got a small window
to finish Tony's roof.

Nikki and Paul did a great job
on the bay side of the roof.

Now it's time for the pond side.

- Today, we're finishing
shingling this roof.

The big difference is...
the weather.

Of course.
Welcome to Newfoundland.

Yesterday was mild,
not so much wind.

Today, it's twice as windy,
twice as hard, obviously,

to get it done.

- But, the sun is shinin',

and this is
the three-day window,

so let's get to it.

Come on. You're not gonna
get it shingled down here.

(laughing)

Nikki, she finds the cold
a lot more than I do.

The thing is, you just gotta
put it out of your mind

and the cold's the cold,

the job's still gotta be done,

so it's just as well to smile
and be happy than miserable.

The wind's supposed to come up
later on this afternoon,

so it's much better for us
to get it done now

while it's not blowing a gale,

because it just gets to be
a big pain

when you start losing
your shingles

and you gotta spend more time
holding onto to 'em

than actually puttin' them on.

(suspenseful music)

- Nobody wants to be
shingling a roof in a snowstorm.

This is just the start of it.

The quicker you can get her
done and get out of here

it's the best-case scenario.

(Randy): At the bay
in Brigus Harbor,

we thought we had a three-day
window of clear weather

to finish Tony's roof,
but I should have known better.

We got hit with three seasons
all at once on this project.

But we can't stop now.

- We never really beat
the weather,

but we're gonna get it finished
now before...

it gets too bad.

We're just here taking off
our roof brackets now

and we'll break down
the scaffold, and we'll be off

to the next one. I'm happy
enough to have this done.

- An hour to finish up.
An hour to get this down.

And we're pulled out. Done.

Makin' our way down.
Back on solid ground.

(Randy): Just because
it's the weekend,

doesn't mean
I can slow down.

I got to get my mom
into her new house,

so I'm asking a huge
favour from Jason.

- So, what is it this weekend?

- I got some fun on the weekend.

- What's that?
- It's herringbone flooring.

- Hold on a second here.
You didn't say anything

about herringbone on the phone.
- Well, if I would've said that,

you wouldn't have come
on the weekend!

(laughing)
- Always a surprise, Randy.

- I called in a favour.

We need to get
the flooring all done,

and if our team is too busy,

or we just need a good
flooring job,

we'll give Jason a call.

I'll owe him one now.

- Where?
- Throughout.

Living room, kitchen,
dining room, two bedrooms.

- What's the timeline?
- Yesterday.

(laughing)

That's the flooring over there
if you wanna have a look.

- Yeah. Herringbone.
- It is.

Herringbone looks deadly.

But it's tangly. So many angles.

And you're lining up the points.

If it's off a little bit,
it's gonna look so wonky.

It's just not like
a straight flooring.

We could do this place
in one day.

Herringbone is probably
gonna take two or three days.

It's an oak floor, engineered,

and it can be either
glued down or clicked.

We're going with
the clicked version just because

it's quicker, easier.

- Nice.
- Yeah.

- It's a nice floor.

There's a little bit
of math involved

with your cuts, and you know,
everything's cut on a 45.

But measure twice, cut once,

and, uh, get it done.

You're gonna have an arrow.

Which way are you thinking
that you want that to run?

- Uh... probably the way
you're going now?

- Okay, good.
(laughing)

And what's your focus
point here?

You could start it
in the middle in here,

but you're gonna have furniture.

Nobody's really gonna see
if it's even against the walls.

where it's wide open.

- I guess really coming in
through the front door.

When you're coming in
through that front door,

you open it up,
there it is.

- Yeah. We'll have it centred.

- I think that'll

Then you can come out,
fan out into the kitchen,

the living room.
- Continue all the way through.

- Yeah. It's a special look.

It's not what
you see everywhere.

And it is for Mom,

We got two weeks to finish
the rest of the house,

and we need this flooring done
to keep moving ahead.

Without the flooring,
you know, we can't finish off

the baseboard trim.

We can't bring in the furniture.
So, it hinders a lot.

I'm saying Jason got time,
but he really don't.

He got two days,
so if I come in Monday,

I'm hoping this is all done,

'cause we got a stack load
of work to get done.

(upbeat music)

(Randy): We're starting
the week by finishing

the last bit of work
at the church in Bay Roberts.

We gotta put some
siding on the back.

It blew off, so we gotta take
that off, put the new on.

I don't know if we're gonna
get around this.

It's, uh, pretty tight, so...

it's a lot bigger than
what we pictured.

We ain't gettin' around there.

It's gonna be five...
five-fourths or twenty.

You're looking for
about 24 hands

and that's pretty well
what you own.

- Yeah.

We can't get the lift
around the corner. It's too big.

So, uh, it's back to climbing
on the scaffold.

It sucks.

We gotta be done
by the end of the week.

But weather is a big factor.

There's supposed to be
more wind, more rain,

so not looking good.

(upbeat music)

It turns out I was right.
We got hit by rain and more.

- Just here now finishing
off the siding on the church.

It should take us probably
a couple days by the time

we get all the way to the top.
It's pretty high.

- Oh...

- It's not that bad of a job,
but it's not the funnest

this time of year.
With all the cold,

the siding gets pretty brittle,

so it's a little harder to cut,
and it takes a little longer.

But we're gonna get it done.

(Randy): In Bay Roberts, we only
have one more thing to finish up

at the community church,
the siding at the back.

But this early part
of winter is misery.

Rain, snow, wind.

- Froze to death.
(Paul): Nikki's a wuss.

It's not warm enough for her.

(Randy): But we gotta
push through.

And after all the effort,

it's a great feeling
to finish a job

that means a lot
to the community.

(folk music)

Back at my mom's new house
in Brigus,

it's just days away
from Mom moving in.

So, the whole team's here today

doing some finishing touches.

Jason was here,
got all the flooring down.

He did an awesome job.

And the electricians are here

finishing off the heaters.

Right now, we're just trying
to get Mother in the house.

But there's still a lot to do.

It's all the little details
that take so much time,

so all hands on deck.

The big install for me today
is in the kid's room.

- Come give me a hand
to lay this up, please.

I built these really
cool cloud shapes

to be giant night lights
for the kids.

- I can't wait to see
the final plug in.

a pretty cool idea
for a kids' room.

- Uh, we'll get the other one

and then we'll adjust it all.

(Randy): Before the rest
of the furniture can come in,

there's a few more custom
features to take care of.

- These are floating shelves

going next to the fireplace.

It's, uh, gonna be all glued.
No nails.

If I use nails, I have
to fill every hole.

And it just don't look
as clean as just glued.

Randy does all the design
and does all the figuring,

I guess we'll call it,
then he hands me off a drawing,

or tells me what he wants,
and, uh...

I try to make it
happen from there.

(upbeat music)

So now I just have
to glue them together

and fold it together
like a book, and we're done.

(Randy): I love all
the custom touches we're doing.

The house does have a view
of the forest,

so I'm adding wood features
wherever I can.

And since the old man
is the pro in the shop,

I'm getting him to do it.

- We're making not
your traditional spindles.

It's gonna be from
floor to ceiling.

Randy comes up with
all the ideas, pretty much.

But it's a lot of work.

This is eight hours'
worth of planing,

then we got a couple hours'
worth of cutting,

another four or five hours'
worth of sanding,

and then we have installation.
So, yeah, a lot of work.

Basically, this is the idea.

Yeah, I just have 40 more
to make and I'll be done.

(Randy): Hmm. Is he complaining?

Well, I could've got him
to install them too.

(upbeat music)

But Nikki and Paul
are happy to jump in.

A lot of long hours
and hard work

has gone into this place.

So I'm thankful
to all the team,

and I can't wait
for my mom to see it all.

No pressure on me.

- They're plumb right now.

(Randy): I can't believe it.

The day is finally here.

The house that Dad and I built
for my mom is just about ready.

I got Sam and Sasha
finishing things up

so Mom can open the door
and move right in.

- I just feel like Betty's place
was so much fun

for us to do. It was a little
Scandinavian house.

And I feel like it really
came together in the end.

- We decided to kind of go
with a neutral,

natural kind of a palette.
Simple, streamlined.

We really wanted the nature
to come in through the windows,

and that really to be
the highlight of the home.

- There was a really cool
mural wall that we did

with some leaves,
and so we basically

went outside,
found these leaves,

and ironed them
to actually make them flat.

And then we just framed them.

- It really brought
the outside in.

Being minimal doesn't need
to be cold and sterile.

So, the chairs that we did,
we painted them

all different colours.
Nothing too loud.

Kind of a nod
to the Jellybean Row,

the colourful houses
of Newfoundland.

So, it was nice to bring
in some colour

into a white canvas space.

(upbeat folk music)

(Randy): Big day today. I gets
to show my mom her place.

I'm a little bit nervous.
You know...

it's like buying
your mother a present.

You never know
if she's gonna like it.

You're trying to think of all
the things that she do like

and put it into this one gift.

So, this is one big gift
that I'm trying

to let her open up.

Let me go get my mom
and see if she likes it,

because she can't return it.

the different shades in it.

- This herringbone flooring
was a lot of work.

But this house,
especially being for you,

we wanted to throw everything
at it to make it look beautiful.

especially because
we're in the woods.

(laughing)

- I like the wood.

This is a good place
to spend some time

with the whole family,
gathering in this living room.

The kids'll be able
to come over.

It looks nice now,

- So, we built
the dining room table.

That was custom.
- Real nice.

- And we brought the colour
from the spindles.

- Yes.

- The chairs,

Yeah, this is made

- Yeah, like Grady says,
"You're only three apples high."

- Oh, yes.

that's just what I am.

- Everything's in here
custom made, tailored to you,

what we can actually do.

Because this was a special
build to all of us,

'cause it was for you.

I got to say, really nice.

We made a little nook
for the two kids to be able

to sit down,
eat their mac and cheese.

stuff ready for supper?

I made this island big
so you can be here prepping

all the turkeys,
the Jiggs dinner.

- Yeah.

We wanted it to blend in
with the cupboard doors.

Figured we'd do something
a little special.

- It's real nice.

I won't have to clean
no fingerprints now.

getting them deals

in the supermarket, so...

and blocked in,

but it's well worth it.

We had so many projects.

So many different ones,
from renovations to new builds.

- We've, uh, battled everything
from weather,

to deliveries,

to time pressure,

and we always come through.

You know, along the way
we've had a little bit of fun

with cook up, boil ups,
the scattered little meal

and, uh, you know,
it's a good experience.

- I'm happy we're here
and we got through all this,

and we're ready to go.

It's more meaningful
when it's family.

And I considers
Betty like family.

And in the end, to walk in
and see the finished product,

and to see Mother...
are you gonna cry?

- We definitely wouldn't
be able to do this without,

you know, having
the whole team together.

It was a uphill climb, but hey,

everybody pulled through,
everybody came together.

We're like one big family.
That's what it's all about.
