(Nikki): So Randy and Paul

are sittin' in a nice warm shop
while we're out in the rain.

third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander.

My team and I are building
on a giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
a rock for nothing!

We fight the elements
year-round to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it.

(upbeat music)

(Randy): After a long winter,

it's summertime in Brigus.

right now,

but you never know when
the weather is gonna turn.

You gotta get it done
in the short season we have,

'cause everybody wants
to enjoy 'em.

Right now, I'm on my way
to meet up with the homeowners.

It's a new project
right up my alley.

Cory and Leo live in
a hundred-plus-year-old house

in Bay Roberts,
just outside of Brigus.

It's not the house they want
renovated, it's the barn,

which is in really bad shape.

Looking at
ain't gonna scare us away.n

This is the thing that
we live for, and love doing.

I just needed to check
on the condition

to see if we can
actually turn it

into the entertaining area
that they want it to be.

So you're trying to
renovate your old shed?

- Yeah. That's the idea.

- What are you looking
to do to it?

- I bought this place about
five years ago,

and we just sold our house
in St. John's

a couple months ago.
- Okay, nice.

- So we're living out here
permanently now,

and it's a small house.
Much smaller

than what we had before,
so we need more space.

We haven't had the time,
or the money, or the energy

to deal with this,
and it's getting bad.

We lost some of the roof
last winter during Snowmageddon.

- A lot of people did.
- And so it's been leaking

since then. You'll see
I tacked up a couple

of tarps up there,
which helped a little bit,

but, you know, it's just
a temporary fix.

We wanna restore it.

But I don't wanna change
the look of it at all.

Like, I wanna keep it
as original as possible.

- Yeah.
- The roof is sagging

in the middle. I love that
it sags in the middle.

That's part
of the history of it.

I don't want it to look
like a new barn.

- That's our specialty,
old historical places,

keeping history alive
and renovatin' them.

You know, a lot of people
would look at this and think

it's firewood, or just tear
it down and build a new one.

We never look at it that way.
It tells a story.

You got a little bit
of history to the area.

And that's what we love
about it.

- And finding a contractor
who understands that,

like, was quite important to us.
- Definitely.

- Why don't we have
a look inside

and see what we're dealing with?

Finding homeowners that want
to save an old structure

and keep an old barn
like this alive,

it's pretty unique
to Newfoundland.

The locals say the original
owner was a merchant

who built two homes on
the property for his daughters.

The barns like this was used
for storing fishing nets

back in the day.

So why tear it down?
We can fix it up.

This is keeping history
alive, keeping the story,

and that's what we're all about.

- It's pretty twisted, you know?

(Randy): Definitely the way
the logs are cut,

these old beams,
it kind of tells us

that it's a hundred plus
years old.

We learn a lot from it,
how we can actually

take their ingenuity and put it
in today's construction.

Tell me what
you're trying to achieve.

What's your vision?
- Well, we're flexible.

We just need
extra space, really.

Some of it will be for hosting,

you know, for entertaining.
We've got all sorts of furniture

in storage right now
we can't fit into this house,

but it would fit nice
into this space.

- But I can see where,
you know, we gotta fix

the floor,
'cause that's rotted out.

And I'm sure you sills
is gonna be gone,

which basically
is the foundation.

All this stuff is doable,
and it's fixable.

We fixed one not too long ago,

so I kinda know
what we're getting into

and what to expect. But looking
up through this hatch,

I see you got a lot
of roof work, so I'm gonna

climb up the ladder
and have a look.

So what's your vision up there?

(Cory): That'll be kind of like
a sleeping loft

so that if we have extra
guests in the summertime

we've got space there for them.

- Ooh! Nice space up here too.

- You made it up there.

- I can picture sleeping
quarters up here.

Probably like
a spiral staircase.

You know, climb up
through the hole.

Yeah, so I see what you were,
talking about outside

that the roof
is kind of bowing.

So one more year, yeah,
and you probably wouldn't

have much left.

- The other thing
we talked about

was maybe adding
windows on that side.

- Yeah, 'cause the sun
rises on this side.

- We get excellent light
from that direction.

- Perfect. Well, I'm gonna
climb down

and get the plan going.

The shape that it's in now,
it's definitely not gonna last

another winter. If we had
a whole lot of snow onto it

and all that water hittin',
it could collapse in on itself,

which I know they don't want
and we don't want either,

so the quicker we can
get it done, the better it is.

And our budget to save it
is $60,000.

(upbeat music)

Now that I've seen the space,

I got a great idea
what we're gonna do with it.

So I'm gonna go back,
do some hand sketches,

and get this thing done
before weather hits.

It can change any time.

And there's plenty to keep
my crew busy in the meantime.

(Randy): Back in Brigus,
up on the hill,

there's the never-ending
Mitchell house.

We're about 65%
of the way through

with this big renovation.
We got it all drywalled,

we're working on the trim,
and then on to the paint.

The hardwood floors got
to arrive from the mainland

before we start all the big
finishing touches.

- Finally, it looks like
a house. We got the walls up,

and the roof is sheeted
and shingled.

Oh, God! Don't go too close!

And we're waiting for cu

Like I said, we're busy.

- Well, boys,
the adventures begin.

- Today is the first day
we're at the barn,

so we got my father,
we got Al, we got Nikki,

and we got Cody.

The barn looks like
it might fall down,

but it's in pretty good shape.

So we basically have a box.

for 100 years,

so probably sitting on some rot.

So we'll start at the bottom,
and then we'll work our way

up to the roof.
We'll keep the character

by giving it new purpose
for Cory and Leo.

On

an entertaining space
the main floor is gonna be

a vintage wood stove

to keep things warm.

is gonna be a loft space,
ond floor

perfect for hanging out
or a place to crash.

And we have to replace
the floor,

but that's a bit up in the air

on how we're gonna do it.

The idea with the floor,

either to go wood or concrete.

Starting to add it up
and figuring it out.

As great as lumber is,
it's still only got a lifespan

of 40, 50 years.

Concrete, it'll last forever.

So crunching these numbers,
I'll speak to the homeowner,

see which way he wants to go.

I'm kinda going with concrete
on this one a little bit.

I was just looking for the sill

We gotta remove it all because

and we're gonna put a whole
brand new floor down.

I really expected rot,
but not this much.

Like, this whole wall
is kinda decayed, gone.

Big problem.
Hopefully we can fix it,

and hopefully we can keep
the shed up

while we're doing it.
- Are we gonna jack it?

- There's a risk of actually
collapsing it.

- It's only from these three
over here, you can see,

that's buckled outside.
- The old man, he wants

to jack it up,
which is a risky thing,

because if we try to jack it,
it could actually go...

We're not gonna do that, Nikki.

(Nikki): I almost agrees
with Randy.

- I'm kinda,
keep her as it is,

and fix it as she is.

So the sills are so rotted,

they need to be
totally replaced.

(Randy): But to get the sills
out from underneath,

turns out we do need
to jack up the walls,

but no more than an inch.

Big risk. You know,
when you're jacking up anything

like that, that old
and there is still rot

in the building, you got
a risk of that all falling down.

- Only a risk to them
younger people, right?

Us older folks are after
doing it a million times.

- Live and learn, I guess.

- You should smell that
when you're cuttin' it.

It's like, totally...
Like, that actually smells

like old lady perfume.
And that's all you can smell

hitting your face,
is old lady perfume.

I got a log cut
to the height you asked for.

- We're gonna use this old log,

'cause we gotta take that
brace out.

As you see, there's a little
log in the back.

That's what's holding up
this whole structure.

So we gotta take that out
to remove the floor.

It's taking a whole lot
of strain,

and taking a whole lot
of weight.

So we gotta put in
temporary posts

so we're able to remove
this one little round stick.

- That stayed up.

- That one little stick
was holding up

the whole structure.

They're only temporary
right now,

but they're actually
holding up the whole structure.

So it's very important
to have them in place.

- We're gonna jack up this roof.

We're gonna try Scott's theory
and see if it works.

And then when it don't work,
Randy's gonna laugh,

and we're gonna figure out
a different way.

- You think this is

so make sure it's level.

we're switching out

the rotted sills holding up
this hundred-year-old barn.

We're using old logs
as temporary posts

to support the centre
of the structure.

- You're starting to stress

nothing is level.

So when we raised
the one side just a smidge,

a post in the middle
shifted and fell.

- Watch out, watch out!
- What, what?!

- It fell the other way.

When he gets his mind
there's no changing it.

- We'll jack
'til she falls down.

- Nikki, it's not going nowhere.

to get at them sills.

the bottom of the studs
to see if they're rotted out.

(Scott): I'm finding a lot
of rot in the sill.

Everything that's rotten,
we're gonna replace.

And this is one
of the better ones.

The solution is to cut out
all the rot

and replace it with some
new 6 by 6 sills.

(upbeat music)

- I like the restoration,

but this stuff is catty.

It's getting into
jacking stuff up,

so yeah, I got creeped out
for a little bit.

But... Now look at it.
She's solid. Rock solid.

(Randy): Now that we got
the floor taken out,

you can really appreciate
and see

how they took these sticks
right from the floor,

right to the roof.

This is one piece.

It'll last so long because
you chopped down the tree,

and the tree was probably
like a hundred plus years old.

You can see all the rings.
The tighter the rings,

the older the tree is.

So on a new piece of lumber,
as you see,

the grains is a lot wider.
This is maybe a 20-year-old tree

opposed to this is like
a 100-year-old tree.

This is definitely stronger
and gonna last longer

because it's tighter.
That's why I love the old stuff.

So we kinda take that,
put it in today's building,

and we make places that last
this long.

(upbeat music)

I have on the go,

I'll always take on
a new challenge.

Back in Brigus,
I got a call from Justin,

who I did some work
for in the past.

He got a challenging
new project for me.

We renovated their house
about five years ago,

and now they want us back
to build a dock on land

with a ramp to a floating dock.

(Justin): We bought this house
probably five years ago.

It had a nice little
waterfront lot.

We're big boaters, big sailors.

(Randy): They parked their big
sailboat out in the channel

out next to Molly's Island,

and to go back and forth,
they need a place

to park their little dingy.

This is

a land and sea job.
On land, we're building
a 10 by 10 dock

to sit and enjoy
the ocean views.

Then we have to haul over
a 10 by 20 floating dock

that was washed ashore
in a bad storm.

And we gotta anchor it
to the ocean floor

using 5 by 5 concrete blocks

that are 3500 pounds each.

And finally, we'll connect
them both

.

Not a problem, I hope.

To start the land dock,
we actually gotta dig trenches

for a big concrete
foundation, basically,

and then put wood on top of it
that's bolted to the concrete.

We before we geteds

because that is the ramp
connecting the land dock

to the floating dock
to make it as a whole.

(beeping)

It's definitely
a fun little project.

Growing up next to the ocean
all my life,

and looking at the wharves
and the boats,

all that kind of stuff,
so to be able to go over

and build one not too far away
from where I grew up

excites me for sure.
I wish I owned it.

(upbeat music)

While the concrete sets
at the Ladha dock,

we're back in Bay Roberts
where we started renovating

this century-old barn.

On the inside,
the old floor is demoed,

and we fixed up some
of the support beams.

It's a good start,
but there's a way to go yet.

and I got the old man

but we want it to last

another hundred, so we're gonna
beef it up and make sure

- The whole floor is tipping up,

so we're gonna remove
this whole section,

for the new staircase. So we're
gonna have a little rail here

and then our stairs are gonna

We're like oil and water.
We don't always mix.

So while he's on the inside,
I'll tap into the original
well,

which is as old as the barn.

This is the well
that everybody would use

back in the day.
People still use 'em.

You used rock walls
to build up the sides

and feed the water
right to the house.

Let's see how much
water is in the baby.

(Scott): Measure it.
See what it's gonna be.

- Five and-a-half feet
of water. So you're good.

I'd use this well.
Perfect for drinking, for using.

Way better than town water.

I thought I was gonna
have to run the water

from the main house
to the barn.

So it was great news
that we found this old well.

than where I'm digging,
so all the water from that well

is coming out in my ditch.

Oops. I sprung a leak.

Off to get a pump.

A little bit of a pain.
I wasn't expecting, you know,

to dig this and have
all the water going out.

So now I gotta get a pump
to start draining out the well

to drain the water level
below the ditch.

So that way then I can
actually work, and not have

a swimming pool.

- Here we go.
- She's going down!

But actually,
the well is really good.

We can hardly pump it
fast enough that's coming in.

So I have to stick a hole
in the side of that well

and dig out the line.

I really love working
with It's pretty cool.res.

Like, I'm hittin' something.

But sometimes it's not.

- That water level we were
talking about inside the well?

Well I kinda... I struck it,

and now all the water
in the well is coming

out in this hole. As you see,

my boots are only so high.

A lot of water.
It won't go down.

(Randy): Me, my dad, and Al
are at the barn

trying to turn an old well
into a new water line,

which is a struggle.

It was a little bit
of a struggle

trying to get that pipe
through the rocks,

but I made that hole,
I got the pipe in,

and now there's water
inside the barn.

(upbeat music)

The next part there now,
I'm gonna fill

that ditch back up,
and then I'm gonna start
running

the electrical conduit.

It'll be a little bit
easier this time

to put power in the barn.

While I'm doing that,
my dad and Al are inside

finishing the floor joists
to create the loft

on the second floor.

The key to working
with my old man

is he was doing his own thing
on the inside

and I was outside digging,
so, you know,

I was in my element,
he was in his.

Perfect. It was a win-win!

(upbeat music)

Back down on the harbour,

it's a big day
for the Ladha family

and their new floating dock.

But before we can install
this thing,

we gotta get it
to their property first.

The homeowners are involved
in this process.

They're sailors,
so they love the water,

so this wind, they don't mind
that at all.

They love sailin'.
So I'm just here to get it

in the water safely,
and then they're gonna tie it on

and haul it over.
Better them than me.

- Funny story,
my brother gets a text

from Dave Mitchell,
a friend of ours,

and he said, "I hear you's doing
a floating dock."

Word travels fast in Brigus.

And he said,
"Well, don't build one,

'cause I have one to give you!"

That floating dock Dave had

on the other side
of Brigus Harbour,

where there's a commercial
fishing dock and everything.

But after what we call
Snowmageddon,

which was a, you know,
once in a hundred year snowstorm

and literally a hurricane,

picked up that dock
and launched it on a beach.

So we're gonna have to get

some equipment in
and lift it up,
and then once it gets floating,

then myself, and my brother,
and some friends

will get some smaller boats
and tow it around.

- It definitely was a free dock,
but it came with a price,

because we had to get
the excavator in,

we had to get it in the water,
and then we had to sail it

across that channel.
Not fun on a windy day.

(Justin): I've towed a lot
of stuff in a lot of different

kind of boats but, uh,
I've never actually towed

a big floating dock.

It's 15,000 pounds.

I wasn't sure we were
gonna have enough horsepower

with two small inflatables

and a 15-horsepower engine
to do it.

At the end of the day,
it's a good story,

and the dock ended up
where it was supposed to be.

(Randy): So phase two done.

Now, we just need to get
a dive crew to chain the dock

to the bottom
of the ocean floor.

Easy, right?

(upbeat music)

Between the Ladha dock
and the barn,

we're keeping real busy
right now.

But on top of that,
the brand new house

that me and my dad
are building for my mom

got shut down
over the winter.

So any chance we get,
someone's up there working on
it

no matter what.
(Nikki): Ready?

- Today, Al's up there
with Nikki

and one of our summer hands,
Hunter.

so she's kinda,

If we don't get a plan, we don't
have a project to build,

but with the rain and the wet,
the caulking won't stick.

You can't tape the windows.
The tape won't stick.

in Brigus,

Nikki's having a rough old go
in the rain

getting the windows in.
- Good enough for a duck.

If this was a nice calm day,
there's no reason why

we couldn't have all these
windows in today.

But with the rain and the wet,
the caulking won't stick

to the house wrap.
You can't tape the windows.

The tape won't stick.
So you're better off calling it,

and coming back another time
and going at it.

- If I can predict,
Nikki's in there

definitely swearing on me.

My ears are definitely
burning right now.

(laughing)
Any minute at all,

she's gonna barge in
through the door.

"I'm off today 'cause I'm wet!"

(Nikki): Where you at?
(Paul): What's up?

- Do you have all
the windows in?

- We got five in out of 15.

- Five?
- Five.

(Paul): How many windows

put in that day out the rain?
It's just two.

- But all jokes aside,
I am comfortable enough

to do windows. Like, I knew
what had to be prepared

and how to do that.
I knew about the caulking,

I knew about levelling
them all off the bottom.

Like, I was comfortable
to do the windows,

it's just the weather
wasn't cooperatin' with us.

(Randy): Okay, so you're
coming in Saturday?

- No, I'm not coming
in Saturday!

What do you say about that?
(clicking tongue)

(Randy): Nikki'll get it done
another day.

She's not a quitter.

(upbeat music)

The tides have turned,
which is perfect,

because we got a lot
of people on site

to finish up
the Ladha job.

Today, it's all about
connecting the docks,

and we got some deadly
weather to do it.

The floating dock will be
anchored to the ocean floor

by a diver.

My team is building
the land dock.

Then we'll lift
and install the metal ramp

to join them together.

So, uh, it's gonna be a big day.

(upbeat music)

Uh, I think they got her.

We lifted the two concrete
anchors in the water.

They're ready for the divers.
The idea of the divers,

they gotta move them out,
put them in place,

hook up the chains
to the floating dock

so it don't move.

- WSo that's what this wholent.
We use set-up is for. gear.

Unlike scuba guys,
which have a limited

amount of time because
of the tank they wear

on their back, we have the air
from the surface,

so you don't run out of air
when you're down there.

We have

with an orange lift bag,
to float the blocks

pull them over into position, e
cut the rope,

so then the dock is held
in place,

and won't be able to move.

(Randy): But all the sand
down in the water

makes visibility poor,

so it's a tough old time
for these divers.

- It all went pretty well.
We had a good day for it,

light air.
So we're happy with it.

- And with the sun
still shining,

And then this project is done.

(upbeat music)

Back in Bay Roberts,
I'm back at the barn.

So today w

We gotta start the roof.
e're here.

We're bracing up all
It's Althe roof trussesold man.

because we gotta get
this beam out of the way.

This gotta go out of the way,
dig down, pour concrete floor.

Then we start on the inside,
make this a living space.

The original roof trusses
are resting

on the original studs
that frame up the building.

The weight of a hundred years
of snow, rain and wind

has put a big bow
in the centre.

That roof ain't gonna last
another winter.

It almost ain't lasting
another fall.

So we gotta get it done.

We're puttin' new wood
alongside the existing trusses,

getting rid of these collar ties
and puttin' them up higher

so we're gaining a little
bit more headroom.

And then we're puttin'
a ridge pole in.

It goes from one end
of the shed to the other end

and sits in the middle
of the peak

and carries all the roof load.

That way then you don't have
these big old

collar ties down in the way,

which is holding up the roof
there now.

This rope has lasted
a long time.

- No way.
- Yeah.

- Yes.
- Just the rope?

- Just the rope.
(Al): So don't cut the rope.

- Shut the front door.
(all laughing)

- I sa

y with the dipping roof,
keep that bend, keep the look.

It happened over the years,
and it's settling.

So when you try
to take that settling away,

you got a risk of actually
