IVAN ZIVKOVIC, COPRODUCER,
PLAYS ALEKSIC'S BROTHER

In spring of 1944,

I brought Innocence Unprotected
to the village of Rakovica,

It was a complete print,
as well as negatives and sound track,

I placed it in a sealed,
watertight canister,

wrapped it in asbestos,
and buried it over there,

where it stayed until the Liberation.

I only dug it out in 1 946
and took it to Belgrade,

safe, sound and unharmed.

AS THE SERVANT

You know how it was.

My wife and I had to flee
from the Sarajevo theater company.

The Ustasa regime drove us out.

Our stomachs "Ied us in search
of bread," as the Croatians say.

Then this film came up.

"Let's help 'em
and earn some money."

Miskovic was
the main guy in charge.

He had connections
with the Germans

and got film stock from Germany.

A certain German officer

provided him with film stock
from the black market,

and Miskovic repaid him
with ham, salami and other food.

That's how the film was made.

AS THE SAD ORPHAN, NADA

In one scene,
Bratoljub physically attacks me.

In self-defense I crack
his head open with a vase.

I mean, I crack a vase
over his head.

came out of my belly button.

but Bulgaria's too.

It's been acknowledged
that Bulgarian cinema

was born
out of my belly too.

So I was quite prolific.

So we made this film,

hoping it would be good
and we'd make some money.

But after it was finished,
and after the premiere,

AIeksic grabbed the film
and took it on the road

on a tour
through Serbia and Banat.

He got all the gold and glory,
and we got nothing,

so we'd worked for nothing.

They filmed for 2 1/2 hours.

When we got out,
it was quite a sight:

miniature ships, this big.

The battle for Stalingrad
and the Volga

is a life-and-death struggle,

Oil drives the whole front,

It's the life-giving force
behind the army, the navy,

and, above all, the air force,

Oil fuels heavy industry
and all transport on the Volga,

The Volga provides the whole
Eastern Front with oil and gasoline,

By now even a child understands
the importance of oil

in modern warfare,

Whoever controls oil commands victory,

Without oil there is no victory,

We shouldn 't talk too much about it,
and you know why.

Everyone denies that anything
existed before the war.

They say everything began
with Liberation in 1 944.

By 1 929...

at my request,

Stevan Miskovic was already
filming some of my routines.

From then on up to 1 940,

I regularly filmed
all of my routines,

the novelties in my repertoire.

That footage led to the idea
of making a film

in which our own language
would at last be heard on-screen,

We needed you amateurs,
so to speak.

You weren't amateurs
in terms of your own art,

but everything else
was new to you.

No offense taken.

No offense meant.
I'm sorry, but it's a fact.

I mean amateurs
in terms of cinema.

You were to join me

the two of you,
simple tradesmen, Iaborers,

to roll up your sleeves
and make spotlights,

while I joined in
as your third partner.

We came up with the idea
of sandals with plywood soles.

when the film premiered.

When I had the idea for the film,

I meant for it to be shown
after the war.

Circumstances Ied it
to be shown during the Occupation,

but it was meant to be shown
only after the war.

You remember the premiere?

For over a month
people Iined up to see it

at the People's Cinema,

INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED
It was the first talkie in our language,

and a huge success for its day,

And I spoke the first line,

It was really something,

I 'm sure you remember when the film
was shown at the People's Cinema.

Y es.

It was a crowd
of the common people,

and they applauded so loudly
it almost sounded like a protest,

It wasn 't just
enthusiasm for the film,

It was a protest against
the German film in color

being shown next door,

Golden City.

That film was in German,
and ours was in Serbian,

To the point that the Germans

even flew in
a man from Berlin

to see this film
that was competing with theirs,

Many people
wouldn 't believe that today,

Or that the film was banned,
or that we went to prison,

NEW SERBIA

Here in Serbia, drive belts are now
being produced from cardboard,

The cardboard
is first cut into strips,

The strips are converted
into special links,

Five such links
are joined with one of steel

and fastened to a steel shaft,

These drive belts are very strong,

The prime minister, General Nedic,
said in his speech,

"l want to see my people once again
free, united, and happy,

The survival of our nation
comes first,

and we shall defend it
by every means available,

so rally
behind the Serbian banner,

There are some people

who still think only of Yugoslavia,

but I ask them,
'What about Serbia?

What about the Serbian people
and their future?'

Brothers, do you want a Serbian
cooperative peasant state

where the peasants ' voices
are heard,

or do we descend again
into nebulous uncertainty

and lose sight
of what is truly Serbian?'

for Colonel Milos Masalovic,
