Third generation builder,

My team and I are
building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing.

We fight the elements
year-roun to get the job done.

It might be tough for
some, but not for us.

Because when this is
your view, it's worth it.

(Uplifting music)

Me and my old man
love renovating old houses

here in newfoundland.

What are you making there?

And over the years,
we've found a lot

of catty stuff inside them.

I love anything old and...

That's why I kind of keep it.

You never know what you're goin

to find in a renovation.
Some of this stuff

was buried up in the floor.

Some of it was
buried up in the walls.

Look at that!

Tie that onto your fishing line.

The collection's pretty big,

but it's sitting in my
shed, collecting dust.

Look, even this
old carpenter tool,

you know, found this.

Found an old door off a stove.

That actually came
from a floor out in brigus.

And I found an old key.

I found that in a
wall somewhere.

I was hoping it would
be a key to the vault,

but I haven't found the
vault yet, so I'll keep the key.

(Laughing) And that's the thing,

all this stuff is laid
out in the shed.

But I want to actually
show it off, put it down

on the wall, and all of
these got some kind of story.

And who knows, when
someone walks in,

they might be able to tell you

a story about
these single things.

I love the history
behind the things I saved,

so I thought, "why not share it

with people who
come into the shop?"

Today's the day I get everything
out of my shed and lay it out,

so we can put it on the wall.

It's definitely a collection

and every old job

we go to, it's always
a treasure hunt.

You never know
what you're gonna find.

- A little bit about the
history of all what we did.

And what they did, years ago.

'Cause some of this stuff
is 100, 150, 200 years old.

So...
- I'd say it's only

a sample of your
collection though, ain't it?

- You know, it's
a little taste of it,

little taste of newfoundland.

This old pick that we
found in petty harbour.

- Oh, neat.
- Found a treasure.

(Laughing)

How many people actually used

that pick to make that basement?

- The other side of it,
too, is how much digging

do you think it done to
get wore down that much?

- Oh, quite a bit.
- Too much that one to do.

The old man probably
like it. I likes an excavator...

- I love it. (Laughing)

- Randy, you certainly collected
a good few of these old nails.

- Oh, definitely. Every
old piece of wood

I can save, got an old nail.

That's an old square nail.

So that was hand-forged,
made right here.

- I would never see any of
this if I wasn't with you guys.

Like every time
we find something,

you guys fill me
in on the story.

- Would you know what
this is, Nikki, or how to use it?

- Not a clue.

- It would have an
adjustment screw,

but it'd be like a scribe.

You put your pencil down
through, then Mark something.

Just what it is, yes.
- Yeah, an old scribe.

And what we all
know is the insulation

that they had in the houses
years ago. Newspaper.

We should be
able to get the year.

1929, April.

The cellar was built back

in the 18th century
and when we dug it up,

there was an old
horseshoe we found.

Which way do it go?

- Always up. Never down.

- Do you know the reason, Nikki?

- No. Bad luck if it do?

(All): All the
luck will fall out.

- This way here,
just keeps going.

Like a lucky charm.

(Laughing)

- This is newfoundland
history right here.

- I learnt more here
than I did in school!

You've always said to me,
"every piece tells a story

and every one of these
pieces got a story behind it."

- You never know
what you're gonna find.

(Rhythmic music)

Down the bay in
upper island cove,

a lot of work has been done

at Grant's 100-plus-year-old
house inside and out.

I got the by's in the shop

to make some window
boxes for the front,

and we finished the
piece on the back.

It's for a porch, pantry
and new washroom.

We're building the new
kitchen and we added a window

for loads of light and
views of the ocean.

We've still got a lot of
work to do in the living room,

building the feature wall.

But upstairs flipping the
bedroom with the bathroom

worked out mint!

(Upbeat music)

Grant and his family want
to move in for the holidays,

which is around the corner.

We're really down to the wire.

We got every trade
you can think of

is in there now at something.

A whole lot of tools and
a whole lot of movement.

Plus, Sam and Sasha
have more ideas too,

but we're ready for them.

Hope I didn't jinx myself!

What do you think of the view?
- Oh, it's so beautiful.

- The view is awesome.
- It's beautiful.

And look at this trim work.

- Well, that's the
view I'm talking about.

- Oh, you're not
talking about that view!

- No!
- They're both fantastic.

- We drove up here

and we were so impressed by
the beautiful landscape, the ocean.

- Yeah, exactly. The outside,
the nature that surrounds

this house is definitely
the inspiration for this home.

- Wow. Look at this space.
- Oh, wow.

What a difference this makes.

- Putting this piece
on worked out well.

- Yeah.

You love the space
where you can walk in,

lots of space for
their coats and boots.

- Then you open up right

to a nice big kitchen
and dining room.

- Yes.
- Exactly! Wow.

- Look at this. I love it.

(Randy): Because of
supply issues and timeline,

I've got Matt and pj in the
sho building the kitchen.

- This home deserves a
really special, unique kitchen,

because that's what Grant wants.

- This kitchen is gonna
have that beautiful greenie-blu

tone which is pulled,
again, from that ocean.

And then that backsplash.

It's gonna be kind of
traditional but warm colours.

Everything about
this house is warm.

- It is.

(Randy): And in the living
room there's a whole lot to do.

- Woo-hoo, look at this.

Wow, this is great.

- It is.

- So, this is a really
cozy room for the family.

They love to do
movies, get together.

So we're gonna have
a nice sectional here.

Fill up the whole space.

And then, we'll have a couple
chairs over by the window

looking out over that water.

I mean, that view is insane.

- Next to the woodstove.

- Exactly. So super
cozy, super warm.

- And you know, tall
shelves over here.

Some shelves on the bottom.
- Yeah, got it.

- That's about it. (Laughing)

- Some wall sconces.
- Some wall sconces!

- You're worrying
me with your...

- We'll just wing it.
- Oh, god.

- We need to go upstairs
and talk about some more.

- Upstairs too?

- Yeah!
- But I got sweeping to do.

- Come on, Randy!

- No, come on!

So, this used to be
the bathroom, right?

- Well, where I'm standing
used to be the shower, tub.

- Thought you were gonna say
something else when you said "sh..."

(Laughing)

- No, that was over there.

(Laughing)

- Well, now this is
where the bed's going.

- And we're really bringing
in that outdoors inside.

We're gonna do a
grass cloth in this room.

- You're doing what?
- A grass cloth wallpaper.

- Do you have to mow it?
- Do you have to mow it!

(Laughing)

No, this is just
maintenance free.

(Laughing)

- That is not what's
going in there.

- If you look out that window,

you see a lot of that
tanned colour long grass,

that's all around this house.

So we really wanted to
emulate that in the bedroom.

- Exactly.
- So, that's where the grass cloth wallpaper

kind of comes in.
- Oh!

See, me out there, tall
grass means I got to mow it.

- Not in here,
though. (Laughing)

- He's losing his
mind. Let's walk away.

- I got to go
check out this tile.

- Grant and his family
absolutely love upper island cove.

It's a great place for their
family to all come together

and experience newfoundland.

What a wonderful cozy
home they're gonna have.

It's a new day and we
need to get painting!

Down in island cove today.

Gonna meet Mario, see how
he's doing with the painting.

- Huh! The day is
over and he shows up.

Who is gone by lunchtime?

I've been working
with Mario a long time.

He doesn't like to be rushed,
but I need this one done now.

I might have to bribe him!

- So are we gonna be in for
a time frame on this, or what?

- We will. Are you?

- That's a good
question. Depends on you.

- What do you mean
it depends on me?

We got it all done, b'y!
- Oh!

- He might complain, but
he never let's me down.

Jason also has a big job:

Laying brick tile for
the whole main floor.

- It feels really good to
be almost finished this job.

- Jason is a brave man
to take on a job like that.

- I've laid about 4000

of these through this house.

- I've... tiled before.

Jobs from backsplashes

to flooring, to wall,
whatever. And that there...

- Then we get the
joy of grouting it.

- That's a challenge
right there. It is no joke.

- On the plus side,
it's not herringbone!

(Laughing)

we're pushing hard
to get everything done

for Grant's move in date.

I've built and renovated
a lot of homes.

I love seeing things
come together.

And the living room feature
wal is going to be extra cool.

- Hey!

my god. This is beautiful.

- Interesting day today.

We got Jessica coming
here all the way from gander

to do a...

Wooden wall art on the
wall around the TV surround.

This is a TV frame that
we built and you're gonna

put your art right here.

You know, Jessica is an
artist and the woodworking

that she's gonna do
will tie into this old home.

She loves the older
homes, as well.

So, two of it will
go hand-in-hand

and hey, it's made out of wood.
We love wood, she loves wood

so hey, it's gonna look good.
What better do you want?

- I started as a labourer.

What I used to do is when
I was working construction,

was collect all the old trims...
- Okay.

- and make artwork out of them.

And now, I do feature
walls in the homes.

- So how do you lay it out?

You just... All
different angles or...

- Yeah. I usually kind
of start in the middle,

maybe like right
here and come down,

and then I'll branch off.

But it's all intuitive. I
don't really have a plan

before I come to a wall.

And then, I do it on the spot.

- You're like us. We
never have a plan.

We just start tearing into it.

- Yeah. Perfect! (Laughing)

(Upbeat music)

- Pretty already.

(Randy): It's crunch time.
Nikki loves Jessica's work,

so I figured, why not?
See if she can lend a hand.

- Jessica's work
is very inspiring.

It's very unique.
It's traditional,

it's newfoundland,
but yet it's quirky

and it adds pop to every home.

- This is wicked.
I'm keeping you on!

(Laughs)

It's just me usually.
And so to have someone

take the pieces and cut
them for me was a huge help.

It was awesome.

(Saw buzzing)

(Laughs)
- I loves this.

Any chance you can work
with somebody different,

besides Paul and Randy... mint.

(Rhythmic music)

- Coming together.

- What we throw
away, you are taking

and reusing again and
making beautiful art out of it.

We should almost
start stockpiling

some of our garbage for you!

- I will take it all.

(Randy): The crew and I always
have personal projects on the g

and Paul's no different.

But his has been
a long time coming.

- We started building there
a little over two years ago.

And now that we've been
in the home now about

six months, it's time now
to start finishing things.

- It's fully
functional right now,

but obviously it doesn't
look nice and that's

the next big project, is
to get the... kitchen done.

- It'd just be nice to have
our first big gathering meal

here and have a full kitchen
and have everyone over.

- We got the temporary kitchen,

we got the hand-me-down stove.

This is where we prep.
- Appliance storage.

We've just been using
some folding tables.

You know, cheap, easy to get.

Plus hey, it never hurts
to have an extra table

kicking around, especially
for large gatherings!

So, it's an investment
in the future!

(Laughing)

- Living in a construction
zone for six months,

it's not too bad, but can't
wait till it's all finished and...

I don't know, how much
longer do you think?

(Laughing)

- Ah, it's like anything.
It'll never be done.

(Upbeat music)

My buddy Johnny,
he owns a kitchen shop

and he's heading up.

So when he arrives, we're gonna
install some cabinets together.

So, gonna be interesting.

That's it. Easiest kitchen
counter I've ever disassembled.

(Chuckles)

- You made it out all right?

(Laughs) You're good.

- Yeah. Well, all looks
in one piece there.

- I went out there the
other week with Johnny

to his shop in bonavista.

He give me a hand
with my range hood,

really put some special
touch on with the design.

- So what I'm doing now,

I'm just uploading
this into... the cnc.

- Yup.

- So that it knows what
to cut and away it'll go.

So this here is our new
cnc machine that took us

from cutting by hand,
which would take us normally,

on average, probably
four days for a kitchen.

So, we can cut all our boxes
now within about two hours.

It's been a great
addition to our business.

- That a man!

- See, you're an
old pro already.

- There's no pro to it,
the machine does it all!

- That's it. That's
pile number one.

- This is heavier than
I remember. (Laughs)

(Indistinct)

- So having Paul
as one of my clients

is a totally different
scenario for me.

I've got high expectations,

so we got to try
and get this 110 %.

(Rhythmic music)

- Alyson got a
little bit of an idea,

because with the
design of the house plan,

but it's gonna be a big surpris
when she sees it all done.

- Got another couple hours
to go and she'll start looking

more like a kitchen.

All I got to figure out now

is what type of hardware
we need to really set this off.

(Randy): Down in
upper island cove...

We're flat out to
finish Grant's house.

And we still got to
install the kitchen,

Jason got to finish the tiles,

the stairs got to be painted,

the electrical got to get done.

I got to stop talking
and get to work.

(Laughs)

Weather's always an
issue here in newfoundland,

but I never expected this!

(Upbeat music)

(Dramatic music)

On the west coast
of newfoundland,

it's a disaster.

One of the biggest rainstorms
in history blew over...

And washed out the
trans-Canada highway.

It's the only road that
runs across the island

from port aux
basque in the west...

To St. John's in the east.

And now, it's gone!

We've got a lot of stuff
coming from the mainland

and that's on that ferry.
Now it can't be delivered

until the highway is re-built.

Not what we need
in the 11th hour,

but we've got to push on.

(Upbeat music)

- So today we're
in upper island cove

and I'm installing the kitchen.

- Thankfully, we
built the kitchen.

Pj and Matt nailed
their 1-week deadline.

So Paul's on site to
keep the install on track.

- Yeah, so it's a
bit of a push today

and a bit of a time crunch.
I got to get this kitchen

installed and right, because
the stone countertops

are coming tomorrow.

(Drilling)

It seems like I'm at
nothing but kitchens lately,

'cause I'm down
here doing this one

and I'm at my own in nights.

So... it just seems like

I'm on a... full-time
kitchen binge.

(Rhythmic music)

- It may have been raining on
the west coast of newfoundland,

but in brigus, it's snow.

And shipping delays
has hit the new build

at harbour pond too.

The old man's been managing
it, but I can take it over

when the other jobs wrap up.

- Got to make sure
everything's on track.

'Cause we're gonna have a
whole lot of subs, plumbers,

electricians, us doing
windows, clapboard, shingling.

And the list goes on.
- And on.

- The house is for
Graham and Ruth,

who want to move to brigus
from St. John's next year.

(Horn honks)

It's a three-storey house
with the garage at the bottom.

On the second floor
there's a kitchen,

dining and a living room.

And on the top floor,
it's a study, bathroom,

bedroom with great
views of brigus.

It's definitely challenging
building a new house now.

Even renovating.

Material costs went up.

Even trying to get material
right now, you know,

it's delays on everything.
From the plywood

to the windows, to
the siding. You name it.

But it's all framed up
now and looking deadly!

- That's our biggest
task right now.

Getting those decks sealed.

- The best part
about this house,

you can sit on one
side of the house,

look out over the ocean.

with anyone that walks by.

- Be up about 20 degrees,
it'd be better though.

- Always have a yarn.

I think there's gonna

- It's coming along.

Just basically a tub,
shower, two sinks.

Next step for us is
make this watertight

so we can start the inside.

All hands-on deck!

The homeowners just arrived.

- You drives all the way
to brigus to feed the ducks?

- We come out here
pretty regularly anyways

to have a look at the house.

and third floor are great.
We can look right out

We almost got the roof sheeted,

two days to go and a

We lost yesterday
because of the snowstorm.

So now, we got the
electricians we got the plumbers,

we got the counter guys.

You know, we got us
doing the TV, me and harv

doing the range hood,
Josh doing the door,

al outside doing a little bit.

Man, oh, man... And
we even got Mario,

good ole Mario painting.

We're jammed in here
like a can of sardines!

Hope Sam and Sasha can
wait a day to do their finishes.

Unless they're... I don't know,

gonna sit out here on the patio.

In upper island cove,
the time crunch is over.

Sam and Sasha have done
their final touches for Grant,

who's arrived from Ontario.

- Oh, it feels so good
to be done this house.

It truly has come together.

- We really wanted to
bring colour into this home.

We wanted it to
be a quaint cottage,

but we wanted it to be vibrant
and we wanted to have fun.

So, we brought in a lot of
deep saturated greenie-blues,

but then also paired it with
some really beautiful pinks.

But not...
- Not harsh.

- Yeah.
- Just soft.

- It's a lot of colour,
but in a soft way.

So when you look out the window

and you see that sunset,
it's the same colour

outside as inside.

The backsplash is actually
one of my favourite things.

That was the
inspiration for the kitchen.

- We really wanted
to bring the colours

from the backsplash
in the cabinets

and the wall
colour and it really

came together beautifully.
- Tied it all together.

Oh, I love this brick floor.

It is honestly...

This is a house
that's gonna be used.

This is gonna be a fun house,
it's gonna be a family house,

it's gonna be a lived-in house.

There's animals and kids
and everyone running around,

it's okay. It's like,

it's gonna be able to
hold up to a lot of stuff.

It's one of those floors you
look down and you're like,

"is this stone, is it brick?"
- Has it been here forever?

Or is it new?

And I just love that texture.
Bringing in something different

that's not a wood, it's
not a painted colour.

It's something completely
different. And it really adds a lot.

- Jessica waterman really
killed it with the feature wall.

With that trim work that
she does and then painted

the accent colour, it really...
- It's the room.

- It's the showstopper
for the room.

Also, there's cabinets below
to hide all your media stuff.

- Super important.

- And then a bookcase
on the side. Right?

To display everything.
So a lot could fit

in a small space, even
when you don't think you can.

- You just have to really plan it out.
- You do.

Grant and his family
were up for anything.

So we went pink in the bathroom.

- But a soft pink.
- Yeah.

- It's very soft and
muted. It's calming.

- And we grounded it with a
lot of black accents, as well,

which also brought
in a little bit more

of a masculine feel
against the pink.

The house definitely has a
new feel to it, with it's new

modern bathrooms and
kitchen, which is lovely.

But the house still has

the soul that this
home always had,

that's really important
to Grant. Right?

- It's amazing. They're
gonna be really happy

to have this place
as their family home.

(Soft music)

- You know what?
Feels pretty good.

Look what we did.

Now that it's all done,
bring Grant in and show him.

We've been speaking
on the phone, emails.

But we haven't met in person.

So this is gonna be the
first time he's gonna see

his place all renovated.

Yeah, a little bit nervous.

But it feels good to
hit Grant's deadline

and stay on budget of $200,000.

so that's been a huge challenge.

out in my absence.

think of the place?

- I'm shocked, there's
no words actually.

The extension looks seamless,

which I didn't think
was gonna happen.

- That's one thing about
when you're doing any kind

of renovation, if
you can blend it in

like it's always been there,
well then, we did a little bit

of a good deed.
- Yeah it looks great.

- Wait till you see inside.
How it all blended together.

for 50 years, since
I was a newborn.

my mom lived literally

in the house next door,
which isn't here anymore.

So, yeah... it's exciting.

- Looks pretty good, what?

A lot warmer in here.

My mom and dad retired
here and... they loved it here.

That was kind of
everything to them.

was all made in our shop.

countertops and got them right

from the sorting depot.
So got things moving along

a little bit faster than what
they're supposed to be.

It's been a bit of a wait

with everything going on,
from the boat not running

to the highway
getting washed out.

So it's a bit of

an exciting time now.
We're getting back on track

and we're gonna
get them installed.

- It's been exhausting
trying to get all this done

in such a short period
and with all the delays

It's a good feeling

time there the weekends,

so I made a trip out central
to Alyson's dad's camp.

This is a piece of wood
which he had been storing

for a future project.

got the rustic look.

that's gonna go
on the fireplace.

'cause he passed a year ago.

he's done a phenomenal job.

We've got that soft
white and that soft grey,

which is a beautiful,
just a simple contrast.

It's not a lot, but we
need to add some wood,

we need to add some greenery,

a little pop of colour
here and there.
