Third generation builder,

proud newfoundlander!

My team and I are
building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing.

We fight the elements
year-roun to get the job done.

It might be tough for
some, but not for us.

Because when this is
your view, it's worth it.

(Uplifting music)

On a day like today,
it's hard to believe

old man winter's knocking
on the door. But he is.

Knowing weather can turn anytime

put us in a time crunch,
especially jobs along the shore

petty harbour is
a nice little town.

It's tucked in between
two mountains.

People been fishing here,
way back in the 1500s.

So, nice little place.

There was no roads
coming into petty harbour.

So when you came in
by boat, there probably

wasn't even a wharf.

So you had to
have a place to live.

So you would start
building a house.

And there's only so much room.

So you build it in
the side the cliff.

It worked back then. And
hey, we're still building them

on the side the cliff.

There's a lot of old homes,

lot of renovations to do here.

That's why we love
coming here. Set our Mark.

(Laughs)

Janet and Liam's
place is definitely making

a Mark here now!

We're blending the
history of this place

with modern updates,
which is what I love to do.

We started this
job in the spring

after the foundation
work was already done.

Then, we set a
course to finish it all up.

The piece we built on the
house is for a new porch,

living room, laundry
and a bathroom.

We're using the original
footprint of the house

and making it into a huge
kitchen and dining area.

And a big island will
have a beer tap for Liam,

who's a brew
master in St. John's.

And on top of that, we
spruced up the second floor

and added a washroom.

This place is coming along.
There's only a few things left.

It feels good when
you get to this point.

When you start, you
got an open shell.

There was an old wooden floor,

there was an old basement.

This add on wasn't done.
We came a long way.

Still a long way to go,
but it always feels good

when you start closing in,
when the drywall goes on.

It starts taking shape.

You can see the final product,

you can see what
you're working towards.

And after way too
many shipping delays,

the last batch of windows
and doors finally arrived,

so the crew's wasting
no time to get them in.

- So, today I've got myself,
Harvey, al, and Jamie.

We've broke up into a couple
of teams, multiple hands,

hopefully gets the
work done faster.

We finally got a nice day,

so we're putting the
extra windows and doors,

getting her fully enclosed.

When the sun shines like this

and you actually get
to wear your t-shirt,

you take advantage and
get the outside buttoned up.

(Randy): With the
house sealed up,

time to bring in the sparkies
for their final touches.

This is Patrick,
our electrician.

So, any time we need
something wired up,

he's usually the man to do it.

- It's always a project,
there's always challenges.

This one is...

A little different again.
Never... not one is the same.

- We're doing in-floor heat,

we're doing the
tankless water heater.

There's many more
stuff we're upgrading from

the old home that we're...

Was built probably
a hundred years ago.

Meaning we had
to put in a new panel

and a new mast and new wires.

Now that it's all hooked up,

Patrick's taking
down the old one.

- Biggest challenge on this job

was trying to
conceal the electrical

where we had exposed
floors and ceiling.

You know, took extra five,
six hours, but it got done.

And the homeowner's happy.

- Homeowner was happy,
we're happy. Win-win.

When you're getting
close to the finish line,

there's a whole lot of
trades got to come in

and there's a whole
lot of moving parts.

This is the bench?
We got to paint it?

- Yeah.

- We're sitting on the
bench that we got to refinish.

We just discovered it

in our little pod there,
Sam brought us in,

showed us something
we got to paint.

How good do you
want to make it look?

Just because there's a lot of...

- Yeah and that's
fine, that's fine.

We're going with the
older kind of a look.

It doesn't need to be perfect.

- So, any
blemishes... It's okay.

- We don't need
to fix it up. Yeah.

- Petty harbour isn't the only
job rushing to the finish line.

Down in upper island cove,
Grant's hundred-year-old house

is going through a
major update too.

One, two, three...

With the back of the house
open to the new addition,

bring on the plumbing
and electrical,

so we can get our
finishing plan into action.

Well, most of it anyway...

We're having more supply issues

Grant and his family need
a kitchen to cook up a feed

when they move
in for the holidays...

We're gonna take it on.

We don't want to
wait for it to come in.

And it's always better
when we can actually

have it all in our hands.

We can kinda work
around our time.

This is what I'm at
here now, drawing it up

so the boys in the
woodshop can actually build it.

Hot off their victory at
the company cook off...

The b'ys came from
building kitchens,

so I'm sure they're after
having just as tight as timeline,

but I'll definitely bring
this drawing to them,

tell them they only got a
week and see how they react.

So, I got all the
measurements there.

Got it all drawed up.
Double pulls right there.

Drawers is gonna
be 154 inches long.

You know, apron sink,

which we're probably
gonna need to get that sink.

- Gonna need that apron
sink to make the apron frame.

- Hopefully it's
not on the boat.

- And the specs
for the range hood.

- Okay.

- When do you say you want that?

- In a week.
- In a week. Wow. Okay.

- As long as Randy
don't sneak nothing else in

and stays out in his
office for the next week,

we'll get the kitchen done.

Little bit of fooling around,

but I'm sure we can manage.

we're closing in on Janet

and Liam's move in date.

Outside things are looking mint

inside, time for Sam and
Sasha' input on the final touches.

- Look at this place.
Looks amazing.

- Janet and Liam
were downsizing,

but this house still just needed

that little bit of extra space.

If you don't have a basement,
you're losing a lot of storage.

And remember, we live
in a plac where you need

a lot of coats, a lot of boots.

Right? So, it was
important to add on a little bit

of something to this house.
So, I think the addition

really... nailed that.
- It's a must.

Oh, what a great addition. Wow!

- It's coming together, Randy.
- That old wall is the original

exterior of the old house.

- Look at that wood.

- I love how we're keeping that.

That's so important
to Janet and Liam

that we are keeping some
aspects of character, right?

- I know.
- Exactly.

Then, you're gonna do
this beautiful built in here.

I can't wait to see that done.

- And make it look kind of
old, like it's always been here.

- And that's really
their style, too.

We want to keep that in
mind. They have that vintage,

kind of industrial look.

- Definitely. We'll do
a custom piece there.

We're also putting two old
doors there that we're refinishing.

So, they're gonna open up.

- Let's go to the living
room, get to see this.

- Yes! What a great room.

Look at this.

- Great ceiling height, Randy.
- It's huge, what?

This is the new addition.

Still got a little
bit of the old.

But look at the
skylight with the height.

- Yeah, that's so great.

It brightens up the
place completely.

This is a great room, but
we have to keep in mind also,

it's a bit narrow
and it's a bit long.

So, we have to make
sure, with our furniture,

we have to have the
right size sofa for here,

we have to have the
right size armchairs.

It's gonna be cozy. It's
got to have a good feel.

And we're keeping
these concrete floors.

- We are.
- It is. This is it.

- Rugs and texture are
gonna be key in this space.

- Exactly. But we're gonna have
the warmth, so we're gonna have

the coolness from the
floor, but at the same time,

we're gonna have the
warmth from the wood

and we're gonna
get the books in here.

- But the real warmth is gonna

come from the
woodstove over here, right?

- It's so good. It's
gonna be fantastic.

And that's also another
nice little use of space.

Because this is kind of
an empty random corner.

So, it's gonna
fill it in really well.

- Exactly.

- While you're
looking at the fireplace,

you got a nice little
shot right to the tap.

- Yes.

- 'Cause he's
having beer on tap.

- Awesome!
- So cool.

- Let's have a look.

So, this is the
kitchen, dining room.

- Great.
- Open concept.

- Look at these ceilings, Randy.
- Oh, wow.

- This is the original house.

- I love it.

The ceiling is the
floor to the upstairs.

There's only one layer.

- There's only one
layer on this one, yeah.

(Laughing)

We had to put in metal beams
to actually support everything.

- Right.
- I love that.

Again, it's bringing
in that industrial...

- But some character.
- Yeah.

- The old meets new.

- So, this is gonna be the bar.

- The most important
part of the house.

- Most important

- Taking a little tiny space

underneath the stairs
and turning it into a bar.

How unexpected.

We're gonna put some
beadboard on this.

- Yeah. It's gonna have
that little bit of warmth,

that character feel.
- Yeah.

- And that's gonna
go all the way around.

But that's gonna be
closed off with doors.

If you don't want to
show it, you don't have to.

- And that's the thing
that I love that we're doing

with this house, is
bringing in a little bit of old,

bringing in a little bit of new.

- I love that the stairs stayed.

And I think a lot of people
would have ripped out

those stairs.
- Yup.

- But it's what really adds
to the character of the home.

- Each chip in it I
think has a little story.

So, we'll give
them a little dusting.

- Oh, is that what it's called?

The last time,
you said a little bit

of a dusting on a set
of stairs took us forever.

(Laughing)
- Yes.

It's probably gonna
take you forever.

- It'll look good. Be easy.

(Laughing)
- Easy!

Everything we give
you is easy, right?

- Oh, yeah, just
so simple, just...

- Very simple, straightforward.
- A walk in the park.

That's why everybody wants
to refinish them old stairs.

'Cause it's easy.

- We don't really give you

easy things to do, Randy.
- I know, right?

- Nikki's gonna lose her mind.

I'm already expecting
some text messages of like,

"missus, I'm gonna
knock you out."

- Imagine if we asked her
to sand down all the stairs.

- Oh! But she
loves us, so it's fine.

- Yeah it's gonna
be a bit of work.

- She's fine. She got it.

- Somebody got the
lucky job again of picking

all these bloody staples out.

It's like déjà vu.

Did it last year
at the gushue's.

Now we're back, petty
harbour, doing it again.

Sam and Sasha wanted
to keep the stairs?

They should almost be
in here picking the staples.

Take off the high heels
and start picking, ladies.

At least last year, Randy
would come and help me.

This year, he's just
out on the phone.

Pretty cool feature
though, to be saving.

It's a bit monotonous.

It's gonna be
worth all the misery.

(Randy): While Nikki's
finishing the stairs,

outside of St. John's,
I'm checking in on another

major feature: The new counters.

So, I'm here today to
check in on a cool workshop.

The only thing is, it's
not wood. It's metal.

(Rhythmic music)

- How's the kitchen
coming along?

Or the kitchen
top, I should say.

- Yeah, well, it's uh...

Oh, it's a one-of-a-kind,
kind of thing.

So... a lot of it is
making it up as we go.

I hate to say.

- Well, it's gonna be a first
for me having a metal top

in a kitchen, but I think
it's gonna look awesome.

- I've never seen it before.

- Janet and Liam's house is
definitely gonna be different.

It's gonna be a
lot of industrial flair

with a traditional flair.

So, this countertop is
definitely gonna set the bar.

- I got involved with
this project from Liam,

the homeowner.

I did some other countertops

for restaurants in town.

You know, it's gonna
be very original.

The sink and the...
tap are going here.

- Okay. In this slab.
This is the island?

- Yeah. Is there a beer
fridge going underneath,

like a keg fridge?
- Yeah.

- I knew I liked
Liam for a reason.

(Laughs)

The steel comes
out of the factory

and it's a bit rough.

So, I had to smoothen
that out with a polishing disk.

But also, I will
grind patterns into it.

So, before I clearcoat
it, so it'll have more of a...

An artistic feel to it.

Do you want to have a
bit more fun before you go?

- Yeah, sure.
- Make a knife?

- Yeah. Jeez, I'd love to.
- Let's go.

- The best part of this
visit is like anything.

I get to play with tools, fire.

Still a hammer. It's
not wood, just metal.

- You go over that one.
- Oh, mint.

- I started this about 10
years ago, I would say, yeah.

'Cause my son is 20 and
we started doing it together

out back in the firepit:

The poker came out red hot
and he asked if he could hit it

with a hammer on the
rock. I said, "yes, go ahead."

And he was really into it.
So, I get to do my art with it

and be physical, and do it
with my son. So, it's great.

These are old newfoundland
railway spikes that get dug out

of the ground from
the old railway track.

For a bit of...

A bit of art, a bit of history,
I hammer these into knives.

There's a little bit of
coordination you get used to,

the spinning and
hammering at the same time.

You got it. Yeah.
- Yeah.

- The hammering technique
is what a lot of people

have trouble with, you know.

Or how to hold a
hammer properly.

So, Randy's a
natural at that, for sure.

It's not hard to turn, is it?
- No, it's not hard to turn.

- There you go, that's
good, that's good.

It can be over-twisted.
Look at that.

- I did love metalwork
when I was younger, so...

I did try it out, but again,

I kept coming back
to woodworking.

I do have a love for this,

but more of a love
for carpenter work.

- You can feel it when
you hit that soft spot, eh?

- Oh, yeah.
- You feel the difference

how the steel moves.

- So, dipping it makes it hard?

- Yup. The quick quench.

(Rhythmic music)

- Look what I made.
An old railway spike.

That's what they used
to have the railway tracks.

But hey, I just made a knife.

Pretty catty, isn't it? Eh...

I wouldn't sell it
for straightness yet!

- There it is. There you go.
- Wicked. Awesome!

We're getting an
early start down the bay

in upper island cove.

Today, Saturday

and look... here mixing
stain to get that floor done.

So, we got me,

harv, Jamie, and al.

This house is a
hundred plus years old,

and we're giving it
a really big update.

(Randy): We added a
catty little piece on the back

for a new porch,
pantry, and washroom.

The porch opens up
to a custom kitchen,

which we're now
building in the shop.

The living room has a
new doorway to the back

and we're adding a feature wall

plus a deadly wood
stove in the corner.

The biggest change is upstairs.

We're flipping the washroom
with the main bedroom,

giving this space a
mint view of the bay.

We installed new
flooring upstairs

and now, it's time to
give it some character

to match the rest of the house.

We're a little bit behind.

So, every day that we
work is a day farther ahead.

So, working on a
Saturday. But hey, plus is,

coffee and a feed.

We wanted to go
with that old rustic look,

but we did want to go

with a nice dark stain colour.

Really don't know
how we're gonna do it.

We're just gonna throw it at
the floor and see how it works.

Paintbrush, some kinda sponge.

It's all about speed.

Oh, it's gonna be a good day!

- We're just going
with the normal spruce

that most people
got in their backyard.

So, years ago, that's all
the trees that you go cut.

We're trying to keep
that little bit of history.

What's it like, harv?
- Oh, mint.

You want one of these machines.
- Is it?

- Oh, yeah. Gonna
look really good.

- So, we figured out
how we're gonna do it.

That was easy.

Harv just went there,
started mopping it on.

You know what?
It looks really good.

Stain on, stain off.

Stain on, stain off.

Like any other stain
project you would do,

Harvey's applying the stain,
me and Jamie's coming behind,

take a rag, take the excess off

then we'll clear coat it.

Sounds too easy.

Do any kind of flooring,
you always want to work

your way to the doorway.

Work my way out.

Looking good.
Move to the next one.

So, dunzo. All the stain done.

B'ys are getting
ready for the clear.

Give it another couple
hours of drying...

Back in brigus, the
weekend work continues

for me at an old family home.

(Soft music)

So, I got an interesting
call the other day.

It's actually from my cousin.

They're looking at
building a new house,

tearing this one down. As
much as it breaks my heart

to tear it down, it's
so much going wrong

with this house that
need to be upgraded,

and it's just not in the budget.

It was my great aunt's house,
and me and Melissa actually

stayed here for six months whil
we were renovating our house.

A lot of stories.
Let's go tell a few.

I remember actually back in
the day with my grandfather,

coming up and
visiting his mother.

So, my great grandmother.

If the walls could talk,
imagine the stories.

I definitely remember
coming here,

christmastime
and special events.

Used to be an old
wooden bench right there.

Um... gran used to
be around the corner

in the rocking chair,
especially by the window.

As much as this old
place, you'd love to keep it,

needs a lot of work.

The walls got no insulation,
the floors got no insulation.

Guaranteed how old it is,
you're gonna find probably rot,

probably a lot of problems.

The electrical panel
is kind of out of date.

And once you go upstairs,

you'll see there's
not much headroom.

(Laughs)

So, this is the upstairs.

Wasn't a lot of
room for three of us.

And this room here,
got neither heater,

so it was pretty cold
in the wintertime.

(Laughs)

But before tearing it down,
my cousin susanne wants

to save whatever
we can and reuse it.

Definitely a good way to
keep some family history alive.

So, I'm getting the
old man in on this one.

- Even though we're
gonna tear it down,

we want to save
as much as we can.

- Yeah, I mean it's...
We'd like perhaps to take

some of the floorboards
out of it and maybe use it

in a wall in our new place.

- It's like a treasure hunt.
You imagine, this house

was built a hundred
plus years ago.

Aunt vina lived here
for probably 70 years.

I know grandfather, father,
all kinda did some work on it.

Um... so, god only knows
what you're gonna find.

(Upbeat music)

- Right here.

There's some nice
boards behind that. Rip her.

- Today, we're here
at aunt vina's house,

see if we can take out
some old boards, save a few.

Like cardboard!

Jeez, I'm gonna be
here a month till Sunday's

so I can get this off.

- Ah... it's a little bit
of sadness, I guess.

Losing a place where I
spent a lot of time with my dad

and his sister, of
course, aunt vina.

This is where my
grandmother lived for the last

10 years of her life, also.

So, we just not only visited

my aunt, but I used to
come for pop and 20 dollars

from under gran's mattress.

- It's where you sneak
a little bit of alcohol.

(Laughing)

- I think aunt vina would be

quite upset with us right now.

- Hopefully it's not true she'll
come back and haunt us.

- I think she was already
into the house last night.

I was looking out through
the patio door, and I seen,

over in the distance
in the dark, a woman.

Truthfully.

- Lord dynes...
- I walked in through the house,

it must be a shadow.
And then, I went

and looked again
and it was still there.

(Laughs)

It's a true story.
- Maybe it was the fairies.

It's always a treasure hunt.

You never know
what you're gonna find.

You're always looking
for the wide boards

and money in the walls. (Laughs)

Never found any yet.
For me and the old man

to be able to come here

and save all the old
boards out of it and be able

to reuse it in their
new house, win-win.

Especially, you know,
for two of us be able do it.

Oh, look. A board.

Amazing. It's wood!

Notice how all the
old houses, though,

were built way more solid...

- I know.
- Than the new ones.

This old place
means a lot to us,

means a lot to
Andrew and Suzanne.

So, we wanna save every
piece of board that we can.

- It's lots of manual labour.
Something Randy don't like.

- Not really.

(Laughing)

Lord, we picked the
longest one that's there.

- As you can see, not a
peck of insulation and...

Square nails. So, it's old.

- No wonder I was cold.

But this is a good
find. Nice old boards.

If we can only get it off.

You know, it's about
eight to ten inches.

Fine board off a ship.

They never meant for
it to be... taken apart.

Oh, yeah, we're definitely

gonna find the old
boards with no insulation.

I lived here. It was
enough to freeze you.

(Laughs)
- And can you believe,

my aunt vina, up
till 93, I think it was,

or 94, she stayed
here year-round.

- I don't know how
they did it years ago.

I was with sweaters,
pants, heavy socks.

It's a wonder I didn't
have any survival suit on.

- Not tough as
the old folks, eh?

(Laughing)

- Icicles was
hanging off me nose.

(Laughing)

(Upbeat music)

Over the bay in petty harbour,

me and the rest of the
crew are flat out to hit

Janet and Liam's move in date.

- Paul makes a
pretty catty bookshelf.

(Drilling)

I'm just the muscle.

- And I'm doing
something a little different!

I figure I'd come in
and jump on the welder.

So, what we got to
do is actually weld

this beam to this one.

So, we're gonna weld this all
together and then it can't move.

Let's make some sparks!

(Upbeat music)

You don't wanna have a
hurrican and the house fall down.

My weld's the only
thing that's holding it.

Don't have to do
the sides at all.

I'll just do the front.

Melissa's gonna be mad
if I burn a hole in my jeans!

You know what? I wanted
to go into metalwork.

But hey, definitely
comes in handy.

When you got to do
something like this.

Look at the bead on that!

(Laughing) For a rookie.

I'm not a welder.

I'm looking around,
probably looks like a big mess,

but we're cruising right along.

B'ys are up at the roof,

all the outside is
done, the deck is done,

we got underneath
the stairs done,

trim is almost done.

Every day's gonna
look like a war zone,

but hey, it's almost finished.

Eh...

Let's go see the old doors.

These doors is custom.
They came from away.

They're pretty cool.

Harv would agree that
they look really nice,

seeing he spent hours
taking off all the wood paint.

And hours of scraping.

When you come
in through the door,

it's first thing
you're gonna see.

This, the old wall.

We're doing a custom
cabinet right there

to hang all the
coats, put the boots.

So, this room is
gonna be impressive.

We've been giving
her on the main floor,

but the upstairs
got a fix-up, too.

This is gonna be
their main bathroom.

Coming along just like
the rest of the house.

So, this is the
original beadboard,

came out of this original house.

They put it in the storage unit.

Now, we're repurposing
it, putting it on the wall

and it kind of ties in,
because this is the old wood,

this is the old beadboard.

So, you got a little bit of
old, you got a little bit of new.

Pretty much all
upstairs is done.

We sanded the original
floorboards and now,

they're ready to
be clear coated.

I love all the finishes,
especially the view.

Sit down here and play the
accordion and watch a boat.

(Imitates accordion playing)

And it looks like
smooth sailing ahead,

despite the shipping
delays that happened.

Downstairs, the new kitchen
cabinets are right on track.

They've got a rustic feel
and no trouble with the install

- gorgeous.

- Which is great news
because Ian the blacksmith

can work his metal magic
and install the new counters.

It got that industrial vibe
that Liam and Janet love.

Our goal with this Reno is
not only saving the house,

but creating a cool
mix of old and new.

With the countertops
installed, I've got a catty idea

for an old-style backsplash.

We're gonna try to
get that latt-wall on

and a few other
little touch ups.

(Laughs) Oh, god...

(Sighs)

(Rhythmic music)

- We got our team.
It's me, harv and al.

But then we got
the painters here

and we got the tilers
here, whole lot of people.

- Cinnamon roll and
tea, favourite snack.

Keeps the energy up.

Keeps us going.

Randy is pushing us like...
Like you wouldn't believe.

(Laughs)

- Look at that,
b'y. Perfect height.

Might have to take a
little bit off the island but...

First one we got to
do, harv, is notch it.

- Right away.
- Right away.

- Of course.

- Were installing a
backsplash today,

but there's no tiles.
It's gonna be wood.

So, years ago they used
to use lath and plaster,

little strips of wood and
then put plaster over it.

We're doing little strips
of wood, but no plaster.

So, kind of keeping
the old trend.

So, we actually went and
got... It's smooth on one side,

but it's rough, and we're
gonna use the rough side.

We pre-painted it,
make it look like...

We took the plaster
off and left the laths.

(Upbeat music)

I never, ever had to
install lath and plaster.

We're usually tearing
it out, not installing it.

But hey, it'll look good.

Not even half done yet.

I ran out of nails.

might have to get a feed and
go home for the day, refuel.

With all the big installs
done at petty harbour,

it's time to work on a
smaller project, that I love.

It's the perfect finish.

A nameplate is something

actually meaningful
to the homeowners.

And each nameplate and each
design is gonna be different.

Back in the day, you
couldn't really find anyone

by the street address,

by the house number,
we never had any.

The only way you would find
them is by the house name.

Still, today, I don't know
half the streets in brigus.

I don't know half the
numbers of the houses.

I only know them by the names.

So, it's only fitting to keep
naming them houses as we go.

Petty harbour is
a really old house,

like this old piece of wood.

That's what we love about it.

You never throw the wood away.

As you see, look,
it's a little piece.

I'll use it for a sign.

There's many more signs to come

(upbeat music)

After a lot of long
hours in the final stretch,

and a snowstorm to boot...

Nothing's going to
stop Sam and Sasha

doing the final touches,

so Janet and Liam
can move right in.

- The addition is
new, but it actually has

a feeling of old.

It feels like it's
always been here.

We have this exterior wall,
which is an amazing feature,

it's got the wood look again,

it's bringing in
that old kind of feel

and then, that warmth
of the fireplace over

in that corner and
the rustic shelves...

It really does have this amazing
feeling of new and old combined.

- When we met with Janet
and Liam and went through

their pieces that they
were going to bring

into this new home and
when we saw these tiles

that Liam's sister
actually handmade,

it came to us. (Laughing)

Let's incorporate the tile
into a custom-made piece

so the tiles are actually
sitting into wood.

- It's a piece of art,
truly is what it is.

And it's so special to them.

My actual favourite thing in
this house I think is the bar.

It's completely
unexpected, you do not know

it's gonna be there, and
most people probably

would just cover it
up, put some suitcases

or something there, you
wouldn't think to use it.

What a fun piece to talk about

when you have friends
come over. Surprise!

- And they love to entertain,
so it's really important.

I think the staircase was

a really special part of this
house to Janet and Liam,

because there wasn't a
whole lot salvaged or saved

from this house,
but that staircase,

it was so important
that they kept it.

I think they wanted
to incorporate pieces

that you'd almost question,
were they originally

part of the house?

So, even though
the powder room sink

and the kitchen sink weren't,
they were found elsewhere,

they are old, we had
them redone, resurfaced

and I think people will think,

"huh, I wonder if that
was always here?"

- The kitchen is
such a great space.

It's bright, it's open,
you're got that blue colour,

it's really warm, but then,
it's that metal countertop.

It's rustic, it's old,
you can do whatever

you pretty much want on it,

but I love the little bit of
the wood cutting board,

the custom wood cutting
board, the moon shape,

that wood again warming up.

Whenever you have metal,
the more wood you can bring in,

it's gonna soften it.

- And then, that wood ties in

to the cabinets as
well and the shelf.

- The new bathroom upstairs
is such a huge addition.

Now, you have a custom stand
in shower that was never there,

a soaker tub that's amazing.

A place for Janet to
read books. So beautiful.

- Got some really
beautiful neutral tiles,

but then, we've got
that big splash of colour.

We went with a
really bold chartreuse

on that old salvaged beadboard

that we took out of the
ceilings on the main level.

And then, we have
the old exterior wall,

which the vanity is up against.

And so, there's a real
mix of textures in there.

- Marble on the countertops.
- Yeah, exactly.

We've done a lot
with that space.

- Janet and Liam chose
the colours of the house

and I absolutely

love it.

We need to get them on our team!
- I know!

- I was a little bit... At
first with those blue doors,

I was a little bit like,
"is that gonna work?"

- I know, I know,
because the siding is

so vibrant and the
trim is so vibrant,

you'd think, "maybe I'll do
more of a subdued door?"

But no. They just went
bold with everything,

and it works so beautifully.
- So, well!

I love that they took the
risk and it totally paid off!

- Yeah.

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): This job may
have started in the spring

with a fall deadline,
but with delays

out of our control, you got to
find ways to make things work.

But hey, just like any build.
We came through, we got it done.

And now, we're gonna celebrate.

A little bit longer
than three months but,

hey... it's okay.
They're gonna love it.

And even after the delays,

the budget only
crept up to 300 000.

But hey, that's the thing when
you're renovating old places.

So, I'm glad that the homeowner
wasn't really fixed on it.

They kind of know
that you never know

what you're gonna run into.

- House looks a
little bit different?

- Very different.
It looks fabulous.

- It's a transformation.

- It is. Especially from the
first day we met here, what

because we did
something totally different.

Something that
you really don't see.

We kept the old
house, we built on new,

but look: The
exposed metal beams

to the concrete floor to
the metal counter-tops.

different in this place.

of scraping on them to

There's always wasted
space under the stairs,

but we did
something pretty cool.

- And the thing about it is,

all your components
for the in-floor heat,

is all down below.

staircase from the house.

And that's the thing that
I'm happy that you let us do.

'Cause talking
about the staircase,

imagine how many people
actually went up over for who built it.

But look at these old beams.
Someone had to go in the woods,

chop them down, bring
it in here all by hand.

That was a hundred years ago.
- Oh, my god.

- And still solid, ready
for the next hundred years.

- It is. Adding these steel
beams to make it open concept...

'Cause it wasn't built
like that years ago.

- No.
- But definitely today,

to be able to look out
over petty harbour...

- Ah... what a blessing.

- The older houses
had the smaller windows,

but definitely opening it up,

the big window, bring
lots of light into this kitchen.

- The light in this house,

the natural light in
this house is fabulous.

The windows are
just absolutely...

- Yes.
- Amazing. They are perfect.

I know that's your porthole
and we kind of were trying

to figure out what
to actually do with it.

What perfect? Come
up over the stairs.

- Wow.

- I get to see the
eastern rising sun.

I thought it would be a
perfect feature in the house,

and you put another
window outside.

What a fabulous job.
- Yeah!

The single pane wasn't
really energy efficient. So...

- No. Designed for
the side of a boat,

not the side of a house, really.

- Really, really fantastic.

- So, with the new addition,
we did build a new washroom on.

part is all new... wow!

It is just spectacular.

It feels like the outside.

Feels like the colours
look like newfoundland,

- They do.

- It's like a room on its own.

- Another room that
wants to be lived in.

- Absolutely.

And I'll be doing lots of
living in this bathroom.

- Well, maybe we'll leave
you alone and we'll go down

and get a pint... (Laughing)
- What a beautiful tub.

- You know, it feels
great to have it all done.

Janet and Liam be able to
come in and they love the place.

Feels pretty good.

Trying to make
this open concept,

there was a lot of
hurdles to go over.

But then when you
got the metal beams

and you open it all
up, look at that ceiling.

Why cover it up? That's part of

the old house,
part of the history.

So, seeing them special element
really make this house pop.

- Anything good
is worth waiting for

and I think that this
is one of those things.

This is like beyond
my wildest imaginings.

And I have a pretty
wild imagination.

- She does, indeed.

- I just... it's beyond...
- She really does.

- It really is.

- You know, maintaining
the streetscape,

being a recognizable
property in town,

embracing the heritage of
this community and this hous

has been a joy and a privilege.

Never a cross word.

The name of the
house, wow. (Laughing)

That's a good one. Right?
- Yeah.

- It's a running
joke in our family.

Janet and I have a very
passionate relationship.

We love each other
very dearly. But we are...

We speak very plainly to each
other and very, very honestly.

And sometimes,
overwhelmingly honestly for...

- Yes. And it has made
people uncomfortable at times.

- Uh... but here we are.

And I (bleep) Love you.

Working on old homes
is always a challenge.

A house like this, I've
shed tears of happiness

and tears of misery. But
hey, look at the final product.

- I love the exposed
beams. I love the ceilings.

See, on the main floor or
upstairs and the openness

and... everything like that.

That's what gives
it some true history,

some true character.

That's what gives
it something unique.

- But look here. First time
we're using this beer tap,

good friends, a
really great spot.
