Third generation builder,
proud newfoundlander!

My team and I are
building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing.

We fight the elements
year-round to get the job done.

It might be tough for
some, but not for us.

Because when this is
your view, it's worth it.

We're on the West
Side of newfoundland...

Where we just delivered an
amazing playhouse to a great family.

(Applause)

It's a 6-hour ride back
to brigus... so I figured,

hey, it was an adventure
getting here, why stop now?

Keep the adventure going!

So me, Nikki and the old
man are doing something

we always wanted to do.
We're going white water rafting.

There's only one
place to actually do this

in newfoundland and
that's the west coast.

Everyone seems like
they're excited for it.

- I was right up on
it. I was like, deadly.

How often do you get to do that?

- Do a lot of sea kayaking,

but I don't think
this is similar at all.

- Let's get ready.

- Welcome to
rafting newfoundland.

Since it's the fall,

it's gonna be a little cold out
there, so you guys gear up.

We start off with wet
suits. That's for you,

this one is for you
and this one's for you.

- Do we have
vaseline? (Laughing)

- All right, come on.
Let's go get dressed

and get on the water.
- Mother of god!

(Laughing)

- Mint! Let's go.

- I got no shoes on
'til I gets over there.

I left me rubber
boots over there.

Ah... look at them ripped
muscles on this one go... yeah!

- We're hitting the water.

- Guys, your oars.

- We have to have an oar?
- Yes, you're working today.

- Wicked.
- Geez, no days off here.

You must have
spracklin blood, do ya?

- Supposed to have snow today.

But hey, anybody can
go rafting in the summer.

- That's right.
- That's why we're going now.

Wes coast, back on the avalon,

there's a ton of catching
up to do at home.

It's the weekend,
and a perfect time

to push ahead on my new deck...

With my best
helper: My son Grady.

This is what we
do on a Saturday.

We'll always build something or,

in this case, we're
taking something apart.

Shorty's always by my side.

He's more interested
in driving the equipment

than actually on the tools.

Maybe he's taking
after me! (Laughing)

We're gonna start
on the main deck.

The first task at
hand is what I'm at,

taking apart them stairs
and then we start building up.

(Laughing)

- You bossy there, are ya?

The goal this weekend
is to get the steps off

and maybe get the outer
perimeter kind of laid out

and then I can go
full steam ahead

'cause it's all up here and
I got nothing on paper so...

We're full steam ahead
everywhere else too.

Down in upper island cove...

You gonna try to pour today?
- See how things go...

- The foundation walls got
poured and now we can start

framing up the back addition.

And then, in petty harbour...

- Set 'er up.

- Windows! Yes!

- The homeowners are
excited as much as us

to see the construction
site becoming a house again.

- Originally, I started painting
the clapboard and here I am

installing it too,
just like I thought.

But it's good to see 'er
getting buttoned up though.

- There's still a
long way to go,

but the beginning of
the end is almost in sight!

Back home in brigus...
My backyard build

is ready for the next phase.

All hands-on
deck... For my deck!

(Laughing)

Back in summer, me and
Nikki made a teensy little bet

to see who makes the
best chicken wings...

We'll have a little cook-off,
we'll set up the barbecues.

- I think that's a
nice little competition!

- I love a personal project,
and the cookoff gave me the pus

to turn my deck into a deadly
outdoor entertainment space.

But I'd like to use
it before it's winter!

I want this done, so I
started taking it apart

and Melissa's after
me to get it done,

so I'll bring in the team,
move it ahead a little bit.

You know, the b'ys got this.

We're building on
to the old deck...

Creating one big
space to have a party.

I'll have a place for
cooking and the dining area

will be covered
with a new pergola...

And I always wanted a hot tub,

so I'm gonna make one
in the shop out of cedar.

It's gonna be deadly!

I got Josh, harv and
Jamie helping me,

and Grady's supervising
my cook-off rival, Nikki.

If they're working on the deck,
I'm in cooking up my recipe!

Funny enough, I was
doing that last night!

So, we're down at the
deck and Nikki's up here

painting all the
trim for island cove.

So, she probably comin'
over to the edge of the hill

and listening to the trade secrets
about how to prep the wings.

See, look. Shorty's
keeping her distracted.

Don't tell her the ingredients!

- Competitive? That's
spracklin to the t.

Whether you're bettin' for money

or bettin' for the fun of it,
he's always competitive.

He's already questioned
me a couple times.

What do you do with your
wings? Tellin' ya nothing.

You'll find out the
day I cooks 'em.

(Laughing)

- Hey, shorty. Let's
bring you to school.

Imagine, you're goin' to
school and we're buildin' a deck.

(Chuckling)

- All the boards are
ended here right now,

so he's gonna continue
his deck... on out.

So, what we're basically doin',
we'll look for any short boards,

pop 'em up, so we're not
gettin' that straight line.

So... look better.

When we joist over
the rest of the deck,

new board will
continue right on out

so we haven't got
that continuous join.

Josh, we'll grab
a six-by-six now,

while he's diggin' that...

- To have the boys here, it'll
be a big help to put the 6x6.

It's hard to do a lot
of stuff by yourself,

so they'll get the
hard part done

because you need
a couple of hands

to stick all them big posts up.

It's great having
help from my crew,

even though I'm their
boss, and this is my home,

they're just as picky as me.

Not bad over here.

What's it like over there?
It's still got like this...

(Whirring) (Indistinct chatter)

We're still kicked out this way.

The house is 140 years old,
so it's not square, not level.

Now that we're buildin' the
new deck onto the existing deck,

it just looks wonky.
It kinda goes like this.

So now we're just
making a few little tweaks.

But that's the thing about
working with an old home.

You know, you just can't
throw everything down

and use the proper tools
and a new construction.

You just gotta look at it.

This is the best tool. Your eye.

Left the job site.
Gotta get shorty.

You know, he came
out this morning,

did his blessing on the team,
made sure it looks all good.

Now he's comin' home
again, to check on progress.

How was the day in school?

Look. We got a lotta deck.

because we're here

with the mini and the
gator and you wasn't here?

That's one thing I hated
when I was in school,

when the ol' man would be
at stuff and I'd come home,

not be able to be at it.

Didn't want to go
to school next day.

Hopefully that's
not for you, though.

You got 12 more
years there, buddy.

Straightened everything up,

but now our posts
are kinda wonky.

So Jamie here is gonna
back dig this post right here

so we can kick it out
at the bottom a little bit.

We had to fiddle with
our post here a little bit,

but that's all straightened
out there now.

The deck is dead straight and
we're ready for boards here now.

So we did have an
opportunity to fix it.

So we did fix it.

- I'm in upper island
cove today, beautiful day.

But hey, mad sea on the go.

It's pretty... Pretty
crazy out there.

Wouldn't want to be
out there in a boat.

But here checkin'
on Josh and Harvey,

trying to get the
floor on this place.

We're renovating
the whole place.

Upstairs, we're moving the
bathroom to the back of the house

and creating a bigger bedroom
at the front of the house,

to enjoy the ocean views.

On the main floor, we're
giving the living room

a facelift with a feature
wall and a new wood stove.

In the kitchen, we're
knocking everything down

and building it all back up.

It'll be open to the new
addition we're building,

which will have a washroom,
pantry, and a new porch...

Perfect for living
here in newfoundland.

Foundation walls are all poured

and now we're ready
to put the floor on.

But we're still in a tangly
situation tryin' to get

the floor to blend in
from... To the existing,

the new to the existing.

Always a tricky thing
with an old home.

Like a lot of old
houses around here,

this one is built on top
of basically loose rocks

and old concrete instead
of a real foundation.

- That piece of concrete
there, that's not doing nothing.

- Looks like if you
touch it that'll fall down.

Over time the rocks shift,
so we're going to build

a new foundation wall
and use it as a bearing point

for the back of the house
and the new addition.

The new floor joists
are going to rest on top

of the new concrete
foundation wall.

The old joists and
sills are a bit tangly,

so each joist gotta be
custom-notched to fit.

But when it's done, these
joist and the new foundation wall

are gonna carry the
load of the back addition

and the main house for
hopefull another hundred years.

So it definitely
don't look good.

We're gonna have to figure
out how to get the two-by-ten

in underneath that floor.

So I guess get
our floor joists in,

start over there,
work our way across.

Never easy.

(Chuckling)
- No, it's not.

- Look at that.

The mice chewed off the wire.

They love eatin' the
casing off the wires.

- Oh, yeah. Pure copper.

Mice are stayin' warm,

but was gonna burn
the house down.

We're havin' a
little bit of a hiccup,

just how we're gonna
blend it all together.

Then we even noticed
like a wire was all rotted off.

So, there's many a
things that need to be fixed

before we can actually start
puttin' it all back together.

Nothing else we can do.
Better make it happen.

- About six feet.

- Right here, we done a
little knee wall right here

that's solid on concrete
that the boys poured for us.

This is good
support right there.

We're runnin'
into this right here,

so we're notchin' up over that,

into the main
floor that's inside.

So down the road, all
that will be supported.

So... that's it.

It's... it's takin' a
fair bit of time to do.

It's miserable
actually, but I mean,

once it's done, it's done.

It... you won't have no
more issues with this here so,

it's good to go.

- You know, the next thing
is to get this floor all on,

sheeted over and then
we can start the walls.

Once the walls is
up, start the roof,

and then actually start
puttin' it back together.

- Can't argue with perfection.

Ready for a sheet...

- Yes, sir!

- Another work week done,
but the work doesn't stop for me.

With the sun shinin',
it's a perfect day

to keep plugging
away on my new deck.

Hoping this is gonna look good!

Pressure's on getting er'
done in time for the big cookoff.

But working at my own
home doesn't feel like "work".

It's fun!

It's coming along.

The deck extension is done...

Next step is finishing the
pergola over the dining area.

Then my favourite part...
The new cedar hot tub.

Can't wait!

If you're not entertaining
in the kitchen,

you're entertaining outside,
so build a kitchen outside,

dining room table.

The intention on this
vine, it'll keep on growing.

So, if it got
something to cling to,

as you see, it's just hanging
off the side there now.

So, once I join this
arbour into that eave,

it'll keep on going and it'll
keep going over this whole thing.

Nice big purple flowers
that come out of it.

It'll look mint!

Another weekend job, and
two more weekends to go!

At my shop in brigus,

I'm so excited about a
major build for my new deck.

Hot tub time!

- Today's the day.

This is the cedar
tub for the deck.

The b'ys made it in the shop.

The most common hot tub
you're probably gonna see

is all built with fibreglass.

This one's a little bit
different. It's all made of wood.

All the staves are joined
using a bead and cove joint.

Some call it a canoe joint,
to give that circle a shape.

We're gonna fill it up with
salt water when it's all done,

but we gotta plim 'er up first.

It's all dried out, so we're
gonna put the water into it

so it swells up and
then it don't leak.

When the tubs in its
final place on my deck,

we'll drop the stove into
the tub and we're good to go!

It's gonna be a wood-fired,
so no power, no electricity.

Throw a log down
in the firepit. Done.

- Turn 'er on there, Matt.

- The water comin'
from the pond, see?

We'll let the water
go right to the top.

It might take a little
while, 'cause I'm thinking

there is gonna be
a little bit of leakage.

The moment of
truth. She's buildin'.

Cedar is the best wood,
especially for a hot tub.

Imagine, no
chemicals, no nothing.

Put saltwater in,
it's even better.

Au natural.

Man-oh-man.

I'll jump in that cold tonight.

We're in upper
island cove today.

We got so many job sites
and from here to St. John's,

you know, you're about
an hour and a half away.

So there's a lotta work
just driving back and forth

to make sure all of
them are movin' ahead.

So, I'm here now
checkin' on the b'ys,

see how they're
makin' out today.

How you makin' out, b'ys?

- Having our lunch.
- Having a feed.

What do you got to share?

- Want ten wieners?

(Laughing) We got wieners.

- So, you got the roof all done?
- Yeah.

- So now all we gotta
do is cut out that hole.

- Yeah.
- Get that ready for the window.

- Try to make
that fit. (Chuckling)

- You'll get yer feed, I'll go
and have a look on the inside,

get a game plan. Then
we'll cut out that window.

- Okay sounds good.

Since this project started,
we came a long way,

so on the back we
got all the foundation in,

it's all framed up,
we got the roof on

and now we're
makin' it watertight.

We got harv, Jamie and
al shingling on the back.

They're just going
right to town on it.

After that, we can move inside,

starting with the
new kitchen window.

- 66 and three quarters.

I think that's all we need
for the two windows. I think.

- Let's make a hole.

This is the moment.

Hi!

- It's a double window,
acting as one big window.

It was way too long of a wait
to wait for one big window,

so we located two smaller
ones to make the same look.

Supplies are crazy.

You just can't go and put your
hands on anything anymore.

Same look.

But you just make do.

- We got the door
in on the addition

so the whole
thing is watertight.

When you make
a place watertight,

you can move ahead
with the plumbing,

move ahead with
electrical and start putting

all the finishing
touches on the inside.

So, we're gonna take down
that wall from the kitchen

to the new addition.

Let's see if we can
make it happen.

Flat out, moving straight ahead,

knock down that wall, make the
kitchen big, open, right to the porch.

So I see you got the
temporary wall in yesterday.

- Yeah.
- That's all right.

We got all that braced up,

'cause we're gonna need
this to take out this beam

and we're gonna need it
definitely to take this wall down.

Go boom...

So, we'll go from
this stud to this stud,

right up, take it all down.
So, we go big or go home.

- Go big or go home! (Chuckling)

- We'll cut it out
in one big piece

and any of the boards
that are good we'll save.

The rest... keep harv warm.
- That's always good.

A lot of people burn wood
here and it's the thing to do.

Like he got a furnace that's
heating his hot water tank,

the full house. It's all...
You're wood and oil?

- Wood and oil.
- Yeah.

- Oil... oil in the summer.

- Yeah.

And wood in the winter.

(Laughing)

You can go
through it pretty fast,

but they come with
it pretty fast, too.

So... you can't
keep ahead of it.

- As you go in Harvey's yard,

it's the remnants
of all the renos!

(Laughing)
- You dig through the pile!

You can never have enough of it.

And we made a hole.

Lot more light, lot bigger.

Then we got a lotta
work. (Laughing)

Looks like we're not gonna
be able to save any of them,

so stoke the fire!

Instead of making a
table, you're gonna burn it.

- Yeah, gonna burn it.

Our other biscuit box Reno

isn't making the same headway.

But there's always
something to do,

so Nikki's moving things
along as fast as we can.

- Alright. Of course, typical
newfoundland weather,

she's miserable.

Crunch time, everybody's
trying to get work down.

So we're here
playin' in the mud,

tryin' to get a fence up,

tryin' to get some
landscaping done.

Flat out, buddy. Flat out.

- There's no other way to explain
a day like today, only (bleep).

But that's it, you
gotta work in it, so...

Brand new pair of
boots in the summer.

- You got new boots? (Chuckling)

- Yes, I do. I got new boots.

- This'll destroy
'em in a hurry!

- Right now, we would normally
never do the landscaping

until pretty much the
house is buttoned up,

almost ready for
passing the keys over.

But we're at a
standstill with it.

The shipment for
the doors got delayed,

the shipment for the
windows got delayed.

Tryin' to juggle everything.

So while we're
waitin' for this stuff,

keep truckin' on the outside.

We still got a deadline
we gotta try to make.

Keep all parts movin'.

- We're just gonna
pop off these two rails,

because it's kind of an
awkward spot to join 'em.

So, we're just poppin'
this outta the way,

so I can run a skill
saw through here,

but I don't wanna
cut right through.

And then we'll
pop this one down,

so I can run a skill

so it'll cut through this side.

So, it's gonna be kinda
like comin' in this way

and in this way.

- So of course, livin' in
newfoundland, big ol' rocks.

We came along with
our posts, and of course,

we got one that's lyin' on a
gigantic rock that we can't...

So I had to bash
a hole through it.

I'm gonna straddle
my saddle to that,

let the glue dry and then I'll
hang my post on top of that.

Basically, this is a cliff, so
we gotta work around the cliff.

So, here in newfoundland, people
pay money to put rocks under there.

Like you don't live
on a rock enough,

you gotta put 'em in
your front yard, too.

This one we
actually dug out here

when we were tryin'
to get the fence post.

The homeowner loved it.

My favourite thing about
today is my awesome crew,

because if it wasn't for them,

I'd be so miserable, I'd
be gone home long ago.

- I'm at my shop in brigus,
where the new cedar hot tub

is sealed up and watertight
after soaking for a week.

So now we gotta try to move it.

Figured that was simple.

I should've looked at
the numbers on the tape.

I kinda made the
hot tub really big...

A little too big... Just to
make sure, double check.

Oh, yes. Actually, it's
three inches too big.

'Cause now it
won't fit in the trailer.

So the options we
have is turn it on the side

and roll it in like a barrel

or lay that big pallet
right on top of the trailer.

I'll probably lay the
pallet on top of the trailer.

(Motor coughing)
Woah... when she starts.

(Motor starting)

It'll be me loadin' it
on with the forklift,

the b'ys'll guide me in and
then we'll need everyone on site,

'cause we're gonna pick it
up and... walk it down over.

Who's ridin' in the tub?
It's like the clampetts.

(Laughing)

- We got it on, but not too
sure how this is comin' off.

Someone gotta be
using a lot of muscles.

It won't be me.

- Ehhh... it's safe.

There is a back road
to get to my place,

so we don't have to go
on the highway or anything.

So, if we lay it on the top,
it's not like there's gonna be

a lotta cars around.
But still... that high,

it's like a boat.
The higher you go,

the more chance you
got to flippin' it over.

Keep 'er swinging hard, harv.

I'd say that's good, harv.

The hardest part
is getting off of it.

I wonder could I get 'er
on the back of the gator?

Gator's pretty heavy, though.
- It is, yes.

- Maybe I'll back
the gator in there.

- Drive it down in the gator?

Will the gator hold
that? Weight-wise?

- What's the worst
gonna happen? Flat tires.

- There's nothing he won't do.

I can't wait to see his

- My prediction, it's
just gonna slide down,

down on that deck perfectly.

It's a perfect world.

Geez another inch,
we're almost there.

- Ready?
- Yeah.

Okay.
- Go ahead?

- She's all down on the gator.

- Here we go. What's
the worst can happen?

Flip 'er on the turns.
- I'm not stressed.

Randy got lots of
firewood when it goes!

- Umm. (Chuckling)

You know, the hot
tub was pretty tricky.

Luckily enough I got a little,
you know, six-wheel gator,

throw it on the back of
that and brought it down.

- Right there.
- Right there.

- Geez, that was too easy.

- Oh, we made it.

- The process of
gettin' it down today

I didn't think was gonna
be as smooth as it was.

But believe it or not, his little
six-Wheeler machine there worked mint.

(Laughing)

Tires come off the
ground a little bit,

but he made it down here.

I didn't have much
confidence in him.

- Oh sorry.

What did I say would happen?

(Laughing)
- Boom!

Right down in place, harv said.

- Everyone doubted the gator.

So the trick was gettin' it
down here this morning.

But as you see, Jamie and
Nikki is preppin' where the hot tub

is actually gonna
make its final landing.

So, we had the deck around it,

then we're gonna slide the
hot tub over, drop it in location.

And that's it. Fill it up
with water and jump in.

But there's a little bit of prep
before we actually drop it in.

There's gonna be a
wood-fired stove inside of it.

That's how you're
gonna make your heat.

We're not usin' freshwater,
we're usin' saltwater.

Rotate.

Alright, hold on.

- Okay. I'm in.

- Mint. Then, comes
the wings cook off!

Not feeling really a
whole lot of pressure.

I think the only one
got pressure is Nikki.

- I think we got the
pressure to get it done too!

I've worked out my
game day recipe.

I got it down to a couple
more shakes of this

and shakes of
that. I'm ready to go.

He's gonna do whatever he
can now to pull out the win.

I'm going on pure talent!

- Oh, dynes!

While I stay home to
finish the deck in time

for the company cook-off...

Harv's leading the charge

- All hands are on
deck, I'm here now,

on the outside.

He's cuttin' and everything
we need for a job out here.

Jamie's at trim.

We got Michael here with
us and Josh is here with us.

So the b'ys are
insulating, vapour barrier.

This many guys, you
can really move it along.

So... that's... That's a positive
and that's what we need.

Get it movin' along! (Laughing)

- First of all, I gotta
make that hole bigger.

'Cause my pipe's gonna be
a little snug goin' down there.

- The plumber's on site, too.

They got their
hands full, really.

I mean, the type of house
it is, there's a lot of open...

There's not many
walls to run plumbing in.

They're getting that
(bleep) Done for us.

- These pipes, a
particular type of homes,

you don't have much
room in the floor joist cavity

to hide our existing plumbing into
compared to a newer construction.

So, we're trying to do what
I call invisible plumbing.

When they don't want to see
any signs of the existing plumbing,

they want to keep the old
style and integrity of the home,

keep that historical look.
So, it's a bit of a challenge.

What we're up against here now,

we're gonna run an inch
and a half drain through here.

That'll be incorporated into this
new beam that the boys put in.

But this is the cavity area
that we have to work with,

so we gotta try to sneak
some plumbing vents and drains

back through this
cavity area here,

which is quite the little task.

Usually, after every time
you cut a piece of pipe,

you always got these jagged
little edges in the plastic

that toilet paper, hair,
everything get caught up into it,

and over time, it just
builds up more and more

and creates a blockage.
So we try to rim our pipe,

so we have a nice smooth hole.

You get your fittings together
and there's no hold up.

- Our work depend on
their work gettin' done.

So, the quicker the
plumbers get done,

the quicker we can drywall
and move on with our work.

Here in newfoundland, I mean,

right here now it's a great day.

But tomorrow is probably gonna
be crap and the snow is comin'.

And no... well, we
work in it anyway.

But it's great when
you don't have to.

- Listen to the heat.

- We got heat, boy, we got heat.

- Definitely a big day
today. It's the wing cookoff.

Me and Nikki is here. And
we got a few more competitors

on the go here now, too.

- It was one thing, like we started it off
just a friendly little thing between us.

Word got around. Now everybody
in the crew wants to get in on it.

- It's like this deck. It
was only ten by ten,

now it's like
thirty by whatever.

- Ya got flame, spracklin.
- Got flame?

- Open this one
up full blast, too?

- Yeah. Blue sky!

We're closing in on winter...

And we got the deck
ready just in time.

You know what? It feels
great to have the deck all done.

When we first moved
here, we built this deck,

'cause we built the
piece on. It worked,

but it didn't really work well,

'cause we always
hung out in the shed,

and we always
hung out on the deck,

and it was always
like a little low area.

We love entertaining.

Don't matter if it's snow, rain,
sunshine, its all the same to us.

So it only made sense to build
a deck and join it to the shed.

- I love my new deck.

There's a lot of room
for the kids to come play,

we can have their toys. I can watch
them while I'm gettin' supper ready.

So yeah, it's way better.

So starting off, I got the
kitchen area, you know,

the barbecue, the prep area.

The cabinets, you know,
we built out of plywood.

It's probably some of the
pieces we had goin' around.

And the top is
actually made of cedar.

So the countertop is
cedar that we had leftover

from the hot tub and then
the cut-out from the sink,

we made a nice little
cutting board to go with it.

So that's the thing, you
reuse whatever you got.

The dining table sittin' on the
deck is definitely a good feature.

It's a harvest table.

I'm sure some of the lumber
actually came from this house,

so we made the table out of it.

So it means a lot to us
and when you're sittin' down,

it's that old newfoundland
lumber that we took out,

re-salvaged and... hey,
good to have a feed on.

The hot tub really ain't
finished yet, you know,

we're waiting on stuff,
gotta be shipped in,

there was a delay, but
that's the other thing good

about doing stuff for yourself.

If it ain't finished,
eh, you finish it later!

- The hot tub is just another
thing that Randy has yet to finish.

So his to-do list
just keeps growing.

- Melissa's not a
fan of the hot tub,

didn't really wanna go with it.

But her big thing that she
wanted was a hanging chair.

So I had to compromise,
get her a hanging chair.

And I got the hot tub.

See which one
gets used the most.

- I'm glad that Randy
could take some time out

and finish something home,
'cause he's always so busy

making everybody else's
houses and gardens pretty.

So, it's nice that he was
able to finish our deck.

- After gettin' this deck done,

I'm definitely lookin
forward to the competition.

You know that wing competition?

No matter who wins, it's
all gonna be a good feed.

Especially with 300-plus wings.

Slippin'.

- Awesome.

- So we got the fries
all cut up, soakin'.

Now we're gonna
do the first dip.

You just wanna blanch 'em,
just make 'em golden brown.

Yeah, you know, I always thought
about opening up a restaurant.

Instead of newfound woodshop,
it's newfound foodshop!

- I'm stoked for this big day.

It's nice to get out and have
a bit of friendly competition.

Well, I'm takin' it
friendly. Some of us aren't.

But it's nice when we all can
relax, unwind and enjoy ourselves.

- How's everyone today?
- Fantastic.

- Get us all together as a
crew? There's nothing better.

- I'll get 'em tipsy
and then I can win.

(Laughing)

- Ah, the deck looks
awesome. Party deck.

And we're gonna do a lotta
partyin' on it tonight for sure.

- Randy has this
beautiful new deck, I mean,

he's putting it to amazing use,

we're having a
great time after today.

How lucky of him to
have this amazing space!

I'm so happy for
him and his family.

- So yeah, it started
off with me and Nikki,

but then we went
to the ol' man...

P.j. That works in the shop,

Matt that works in the shop.

You know, everybody knows al.

And we got two of us.

- So, if the competition
wasn't stiff enough

having to deal with you.
Now you got everybody

with their own homemade recipes

tryin' to get this figured out.

Stress level just went
from zero to a hundred.

- Don't bother me. They
all go down the same way.

- Paul never got in
on the wing cookin',

but he's definitely gonna
be the... the wing bearer.

He's gonna actually
bring it out to everybody.

- I think they put a weird
nickname on me as the wing bearer.

But I'm gonna be like the
score keeper, the tallier.

Let's see what happens.

- Typical Paul, wants to be
around when there's food.

Don't wanna cook it.
(Together): He wants to eat it.

The way we're gonna
be cookin' the wings,

I think all five of us
are gonna use fryers.

And the ol' man, well,
he's gone to the barbecue.

Kinda old school.
That's... that's his way.

- For sure.

- We can't judge ourself
and we're not lettin'

any of the teammates, 'cause
hey, we're all buddies here.

So, we're gonna
bring in the judges,

which is gonna be
Patrick the electrician,

Shawn the plumber...
- Jason our flooring guy,

and Sasha. We had to get a
girl's touch in on this too, eh?

- I love food. I
will accept all food.

But I die for wings.

So the b'ys better show up.

- Yeah. I just gotta figure out
what the winner's gonna get.

- Hey, buddy.

win at anything he does.

so we got some
wood chips in here

and we done a little bit
of smoking and... yeah.

the recipe, though.

all the wings cooked,

This competition is just not
about taste, it's about look.

get the presentation

with a little bit of ranch
and a little bit of barbecue.

A bit of spice, a bit
of taste. Good to go.

- So, we're gonna
cook 'em out here,

bring 'em into the kitchen,
set it all up, you know,

and make 'em look
just so, bring it out.

None of the judges'll know
who actually owns each wing.

The highest rank is a ten.

It's one in a five. So one in a
five for taste, one in a five for look.

- Yeah, the beauty of this is,

it's nice to be judging
Randy's work today,

instead of him judging mine.

- And then our wing bearer,
Paul, is gonna add 'em up.

- So, we'll start off
here with the first wing.

- My gosh.
- We got drum and tip.

- Back on the plate.

- Oh, yeah. That's nice.

- I like the flavour
of the sauce on it.

It's not too much sauce,
not... not overly messy.

It's really enjoyable.
- Yes, I'm all about the design.

So the design on number one...

So this here's gonna be
wing number two, folks.

- Oh, yeah.
- Spicy!

- So this is the spice?
- I like the spice.

I like the crunch in this one.

- Wing number three.

- I definitely gotta
finish some wings.

We never get time to do this.

We're either working
or doing our own thing.

And, just to get out have
a drink and have some fun,

it's perfect. It's
what it's all about.

Mmm... that is a good wing.

I've been lookin' at these ones.

I might have to change
some numbers here.

- I know. I'm like,
can I go back?

- Five.
- Yeah, wing number five.

- I want to know who's
house I'm going to for supper.

- We gonna hit
wing number 6 now.

- The peppers,
one in ten are hot.

Did you get the sweet one
or did you get the hot one?

- Got the sweet one, I
thought it was the jalapeno first.

- Everyone got their

scoreboards filled out?
'Cause I'll pick 'em up

and I'll start
tallying the votes.

- I had to do up
some serious math.

The judges even had
to go into the fractions,

they couldn't keep it
to the whole numbers.

We do have a tie, though.
- Oh, yeah?

- Tied for first place, we
have wing number one,

number four, Mr. Matt.

(Cheering)

- Look at the b'ys in
the woodshop winnin'.

That's what they were
at all week, cookin' wings.

- I wondered who invited them to be
part of the wing competition anyway.

(Laughing)

- We knew it comin'
into it. Fat guys don't lie.

(Laughing)
- The next highest

combined score between
presentation and taste

was actually wing
number three... Nikki.

- Woo!
- Oh!

(Laughing)

- As long as I beat spracklin.

- I heard that it was a sub that
kinda tampered with the heat.

So hmm...

- He's full of (bleep)!

(Laughing)

He lost, cold lost.

(Cheering)

- You know what? Now
that the wings are over,

enjoy the new deck, maybe fry up
some turkeys, have another feed.

This is only appetizer.

- All in all, it
was a great day.

- That's the best part of
it. You know, everybody...

You know, all the subs...
You kinda work hard all year,

and hey, you play hard by
eatin' wings and... havin' a drink.

- Time to get a scoff on now.
