My team and I are
building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it
a rock for nothing.

We fight the elements
year-roun to get the job done.

It might be tough for
some, but not for us.

Because when this is
your view, it's worth it.

As you travel north of brigus,

you're into a gorgeous
part of newfoundland.

Upper island cove is about
20 minutes from brigus.

You know, this is an old town

that was built in the 1600s.
It was a fishing village.

So, you'll see a lot of
fishermen around here.

And you know
what? It's so beautiful.

It's built on the cliff and where
it was an old fishing village,

all the houses right
along the shoreline...

Which they probably fished from

you don't see that
very much anymore.

Everybody's trying
to build inland.

So, that's what's
cool about down here.

This is an older home.

It's probably like a
hundred plus years old,

an old biscuit box.

The biscuit box house
is a common house

that you're gonna
see all around the bay.

A biscuit box house
is a square box

with a little bit of a peak,
but pretty much a flat roof.

The name came from when
they used to ship biscuits

over in the ships years
ago, it was a biscuit box...

So that's how they
built their houses.

This is gonna be an interesting because
Grant the homeowner, is stuck in Ontario,

so I'm meeting his cousin
granville so we can start right away.

How you making out?
- Not too bad, how are you?

- Oh, not too bad.
- Grant and I are family.

He's my second cousin.

His grandmother used
to have a house over there

and a cellar and whatever
everybody had back in the day.

My wife grew up in the house.

I lived in the house one year,
at first, when we got married.

- So, a lot of history with,
you know, the old place.

This one. We might find
some interesting stuff.

- You may, yeah. Yeah.

- So, we're building
a piece on here,

but really not gonna change
the look on the outside.

We're gonna build a porch,
a little pantry, you know,

a half bath to kind of give
them a little bit more space.

The big job's on the inside.

Let's go in before
we gets rained on.

- Yeah, let's go!

We're gonna build
a piece on the back

and it's going to have a porch,

it's going to have a pantry

and we're gonna have a washroom

the kitchen is gonna
be in the same location,

but we're gonna
bring it on the wall,

bang out a new window.
Where the cupboards is now,

we're gonna have two
doors going into the porch.

In the living room,
we're adding a doorway,

accent wall and a wood burning
stove to keep things toasty warm.

So, you got a lot of work
done. You got her cleaned out.

- Oh yes.
- Needs a little bit

of a facelift.
- Oh yeah.

- Even though we're
gonna renovate it,

we're not going to lose the
character in the old house.

You know, them memories
will still stay with you.

So, you come in from the porch,

you come into the kitchen,
all new cabinets along here.

Everybody always spends
their time in the kitchen, right?

- Yes, that's right. Yeah.

- Now, we're actually
gonna open up this wall

because we're thinking
there's an old chimbley into it.

It's still going to
be the dining room

with a great view of the ocean
looking at conception bay.

Tearing down these tiles,
leaving all the exposed beams

is going to add that
much more height to it.

Because they're going
to be open beams.

So, rip up the ceiling,

then we're actually
going to leave these stairs.

Hopefully, put in new spindles

and we're going to put
a doorway over here.

Fireplace. And look, you
still got that amazing view.

Remember yourself here?
- Oh yes, yeah.

- Christmas tree there.
Gun rack up on the wall.

- Oh yes, boy!

We gotta put that
back for decoration?

- Well, I wouldn't
say. Not these days!

- No? (Laughing)

- Changes, don't it, boy?

- And upstairs, there's
even more changes.

We're going to make
the bedroom a washroom

and the washroom
the main bedroom

and we're keeping the other
two bedrooms as is for budget.

Which is gonna be about $200,000

and take three months so they
can move in for the winter holidays.

The big job is in this room.

Take the washroom from the front

and put it out here.

So, when we close
up this doorway,

it's going to be the
toilet, vanity, the shower,

and the tub is going
underneath the window.

It's going to be a fair
size. Light the candles.

- There you go, read a book.
- There you go!

Let's have a look
at the other one.

So, the only thing we're doing
out here is kind of the ceiling.

These two bedrooms
are going to keep as is.

The big change is
gonna be in this space.

- Yeah.
- We're moving the washroom.

Going to make this
room a lot bigger.

This is going to
be their bedroom.

Capture that view
in the morning.

That's what it's all about.

This will be a big bedroom
once we knock out this wall.

You don't realize it now.

I better get at it anyway

because we only
got three months.

So, I can get started!
- Yep! Give it to her.

- I know, right?

You know, the biggest
challenges for us there now,

is getting that piece
built on the back.

As you see now
all that cliff behind it,

hopefully, we don't hit that.

But if we do, you know,
it's a good foundation.

This is definitely
a fun project.

Look, we're right
next to the ocean,

in a different location.

It's another old build

and you never know
what you're going to find.

Build a piece on,
ripping out these ceilings,

trying to make it all work...

That's what excites me the most

While I'm in upper island
cove firming up the demo plan...

My company doesn't stop!

We still have lots
of jobs on the go.

A couple of hours
south in petty harbour...

There's another biscuit
box house next to a cliff

where we're adding a piece and
doing a total gut job on the inside!

In my hometown of
brigus, the bedroom addition

on the button's house is built,

so it's time to go inside
for all the finish work.

Yep, we'll be run off our
feet for the rest of the year!

Which is why extra help is
arriving at the perfect time

- It's been a while.
Feeling pretty good.

I got new boots, all oiled up

and ready for the marathon,
ready for the Olympics.

Harv had an accident

and he had to get hip
replacement after he got hurt.

So that's why he been
off for a year and a half.

Now he's back, you know,
all greased up, ready to go.

What do you want to try first?

- Uh, I don't care.

- He's gotta kind
of ease back into it

before he jumps on
the scaffolds on roofs.

So, he's in the woodshop.

Make sure he's going to
keep all the other limbs.

Been away from
the saws a little while.

- Fairly rusty, yeah!

I'll agree with you there.
No doubt about that.

- You know, we're doing
so many different things.

So, to have harv back and
be able to have that trust

going into the job site, knowing
it's going to get done good.

It's definitely good
to see him back.

- Yes, and it's good.

- Back in upper island cove
at Grant's house, it's a big day.

We gotta demo
this whole kitchen.

We're makin' a doorway
to the new addition.

So we gotta remove
all this drywall.

The whole ceiling's comin' down

we're not removing
any of the floorboards,

just the flooring.
The carpet gotta go.

Carpet on the stairs.

And then, we gotta go upstairs

and demo the washroom
and we gotta remove a wall.

I've sent Nikki
and al ahead of me

to get a jump on the work.

- Where did spracklin
got us to now?

In the middle of nowhere.

Come in to find out
today that tick, tock,

we got three months
to get this job done!

I'm pure newfie and this is
my first time down this way.

- Really?

As if we don't have enough

the stress level is like

It is, it's a great big

So, I was trying to
be a smart cookie

and get ahead of the
game before Randy came in

and so I said, "I'll take
the sink out. Easy!"

Unhooked one little thing!

- Fun stuff!
- Oh my god!

How is water
spitting everywhere?

Everybody jumps in.

The main valve
wouldn't get shut off.

Happy Monday, Randy!

- Hey, boy.
- It was out of our control.

There was... Yes, it looked
like I'm the one who broke it,

but realistically, you sneeze and
you would have cracked that off.

Old copper pipes.

This is why they
want to upgrade.

You can't touch them.

Crumbled in our hands.

(Laughing)

- Ow, that hurt!

- Randy came to
me after and said,

"hey, Nikki there's nothing
you could have done about it.

It was crumbling anyways."

- Look at how
heavy a line that is.

- Yeah.

- So, that's the
main water supply

coming into the house.
Unfortunately, the valve

ain't working, the pipe broke,

and well, now, we're
getting a shower.

Not one I wanted on
a Monday morning!

You know, with
them pipes leaking,

probably the
floorboards is gone.

Who knows, even the
sills because we're close

to the back of the house.

Fingers crossed that we
don't have to replace that.

Disastrous, but
you gotta love it!

- The main valve
couldn't get shut off.

Called the town. Luckily,
they came and saved the day.

holding that water
in the pipe forever.

- The floor is pretty soft.

- It's actually really pretty.

This fireplace is beautiful.

The brick is good, solid.

Already painted right pretty.

- Demo's goin' good now.

We gotta go upstairs
and demo the washroom.

Just watch out for
the copper pipe.

Already had my shower for today.

- So, this is the big
moment of demo.

We're going to
take down the wall,

open it up into a big space.

Woo-woo!

Ugh!

Woohoo!

Oh, my butt is stuck.

We have an opening!

Demo went good.
Considering the water break,

didn't think we were going to
get as much into it as we did.

But we got the list
checked off. Moving on!

- Back home in brigus...

We're coming to the
end of another big project.

It's the bedroom addition
at the button's house,

down on the bay!

We're giving the sitting
room a fresh coat of paint.

In the living room, we're
adding a feature wall,

with floating shelves
and stone surround

for the new propane fireplace.

But the big change is on
the other side of the house.

We've expanded the main floor

to create a new bedroom
for the homeowners.

It has loads of space...

And a large bathroom
with a soaker tub

and a standup shower.

The add-on's come a long way.

The windows and
siding are installed...

The plumbing and
electrical's done,

and now, we're
ready for the finishes.

With the end in sight,
I've asked Sam and Sasha

to give this place a look-over,

so we can move ahead
with some design details

that'll really make
this house a home!

So, what do you
think of this place?

- Nice big windows.
This is awesome.

- Yeah, the beams,
the open concept,

the high ceilings.
- Yes, it's fantastic.

And one of the things
we're actually doing

is we're going to put
some light paint in here.

It's going to really
freshen up the space.

Having those whiter walls
will make those beams pop out.

- It really will and also just help
modernize the space as well.

I know Linda and Dr. Button
really want to make it

a little bit more modern.
Still a little bit traditional,

but a little bit more
modern for them.

So, the buttons have just

moved in from St. John's,

so they're a little bit
overwhelmed with what to do

and how to really
approach this home. Right?

So, we're really
happy and excited

to be able to help
them with this.

- We're gonna look
at updating the rug.

Some new decor, some cushions,

some throws, some
nice window treatments.

That's going to
make a difference.

- This is the stone that
you guys picked out.

So, we're going to
clad that whole fireplace.

- Perfect.
- The only difference is,

we're going to go straight up

because the homeowners
wanted straight instead of this.

- Yeah, it's a little
bit more modern.

- Yeah.
- So, one of the things

that Sam and I have
been talking about

is that we wanted to add in
some shelving for the clients.

- If we're gonna do
shelving, they actually got

some reclaimed lumber
that we can probably use.

- Oh, perfect!
- That's great.

- So, with the shelving there,

it's really just the paint

and the decor touches in here,

but really, we need to
check out that other room.

- Well, that's where
all the work is.

Still a nice view of the ocean.

- Oh, this is incredible.

- I love the tray ceiling.

That's going to be really nice.

- It's going to be
beautiful and we're actually

gonna do a soft
blue in this room.

A little bit more of a
relaxing spa retreat

type vibe in here.
Really calming.

- That room is really
all about the view

and those windows. Right?
- One hundred percent.

- Yeah.
- I mean, that...

Not everybody gets to have that.

- No. And that's
really the inspiration

for the colour palette, as well,

bringing in those
ocean blues and Greens.

And just making it
serene, a nice retreat.

Kind of a hotel kind
of a feel. Exactly.

Kind of ocean-inspired
palate is what we're thinking.

- It's like their own
little hotel space.

- Exactly!
- Enter through the front door,

come on in, mint!
- Yeah, exactly.

(Laughing)

We're down in upper island cove

gettin' ready to do
the dig for the addition.

Big day. Dig for the foundation.

See if we're gonna hit rock.

So, Jamie's in the excavator.

The addition is going
to be six feet away

from the house and 21-feet long.

You know, that's a
good-sized addition.

Nothing better than the claw.

The claw!

(Laughing)

There's always concerns
when you dig in the back.

You never know what
we're gonna run into.

Pretty much, we're
gonna run into rock.

It's just how big it is.

But hey, rock is
a good foundation.

If it's big enough.

We got a hole!

But, we got a few issues.

Definitely this rock is an
issue and not an issue.

You can kind of work around it,

but it's a big ol' rock.
That one's in the way too.

I'm up here to meet ed
and he's going to be doing

the foundation, get a game plan!

- 21. First thing he gotta do

is put in the footings and
then start putting in the walls.

Jamie finished all the digging,

but the little thing that
we didn't want to find,

there's no foundation
under the existing house.

There's only rocks.

Which, good for back in the day,

not so much now because
we're doing the new foundation,

so we need to do one
side of the concrete wall.

Which is gonna be tricky.
That's the biggest issue.

You know, that rock
foundation was good back then,

not so much now. When
you got a foundation like this

all ready to founder in,

you gotta have
something to brace it up.

So, we'll do a
concrete wall out here,

six feet out, 21-feet
long, six feet in.

And we'll do one side
of the concrete wall.

Risky!

Could have a blowout.

When you have a blow out,

means every bit of concrete
going inside that wall

ends up in the floor.

It's okay if you want
concrete floor, but we don't.

It's all falling in.

Big hole.

No little critters anyway
coming out of that way.

A piece of lead.

Tie that onto your fishing line.

Always finds a treasure.

- I gotta go!

get the footings in, hopefully!

Ed took off pretty quickly.

He said it ain't the
worst he's seen,

but you know, it ain't the best.

So, usually when
they take off quick,

it's not a good sign!

Over in petty harbour...

We're moving along on Liam
and Janet's biscuit box house.

The new piece is for a mudroom,

living room, laundry,
and a bathroom.

The original building is an
open-concept dining area

and a kitchen with big windows
for the view of the harbour.

In the middle, a
big custom island's

getting a beer tap for
Liam the brew master.

Shawn my plumber laid out
the in-floor heating system

and the next step is
pouring concrete for the floor.

There's nothing
going over top of it.

No hardwood, no finishing.

This concrete floor is
going to be the finish.

We've got to cover just
over 900 square feet.

And while pouring
concrete might sound simple,

installing in-floor heat
is a bit more challenging.

After filling the
foundation with rock

to make everything solid...

A layer of styrofoam
is laid on top of that,

and then the piping for the
in-floor heating is installed.

Then on top of everything,
we'll pour concrete

that will be four inches thick.

Hot water runs
through the pipe...

And then the heat rises
up through the concrete

to keep your toes
nice and toasty,

and warm up your house!

So there's no room for mistakes

but Rick and Terry,
they're up for the task!

- We've been workin' with
Randy now for three years.

Rick, how many jobs
did we do for Randy?

Quite a few.

And Randy's good
to get along with.

It's very easy. Easy
goin'. (Laughing)

- That's a hand trowel finish.

The customer
wanted a matte finish,

I think she called it. So a hand
trowel finish is best for that.

We have to trowel it twice so
there's less porous in the concrete.

It's a tighter finish.
We're almost done.

We got the last little
bit just in the shade.

- So I'm here in brigus today.
We're here at the buttons.

Harv and Josh is on the
inside doin' all the trim.

And I got Nikki comin'
along give me a hand

to actually sheet
over this fireplace.

So, we can put the stone
around it and make some heat.

So the buttons fireplace
in the living room

used to be a wood burning.

So they wanted to switch
it over and what better,

just as well use propane.

Instant heat, way to go.

And it's definitely going
to be the focal point.

When you're sat
down in the living room,

you're looking out over
the ocean with the fire going.

- Oh, wow!

- This is our job for the day.

So, harv and the
boys got it all framed in.

So, me and you
can sheet it over.

- Okay.
- Basically, from here down,

it gotta be fireproofed. Up
here, just gotta be sheeting.

The propane unit, everywhere
in the rest of Canada,

it actually comes
in natural gas.

We're the only ones that
don't have natural gas,

so we need everything propane.
- Excellent.

- So, all of our barbecues,
fireplaces, gotta switch it over.

- When we go camping with the
kids, that's all we do, strictly propane.

- That's the beauty of the
thing, when you put in propane,

you got one tank outside, you can
run many different things off of it.

So, they're even running
their cooktop off of it.

And there's nothing better
than cooking on a propane oven.

- I agree. Totally
different taste.

- But it's actually used
outdoors just as much, as well.

You know, you got your barbecue,

you got your firepit,
you got heaters.

My forklift's ran
off of it. Many uses.

And it's pretty good
on your pocketbook.

Plus it's less on your insurance

and it's 45 per cent
less on your energy bill.

Oh, easy.

I took Nikki along because
she's trying new things,

and why not, throw
her in at the fireplace.

There's going to be
some floating shelves later.

See if she's learned
anything over the years!

- You know what? Looking good.

We got it all sheeted in.

Now we need to get the
floating shelves up on both sides.

Then we can bring the Mason in

and turn that bad boy on.

- You know, all this work
and all this talk about propane

does make me pretty hungry.

because I kind of

Since I bought this house

probably three
or four years ago,

this space right here now,
we're after using it a fair bit.

We kinda built this deck
when we renovated the house,

and even though,
we'll gather on the deck,

we'll always gather on
the ground and in the shed.

We love entertaining,
so it only makes sense

to build a deck and
join it to the shed.

This is something that I've
been planning for a while,

never really had a game plan.

It's kinda one of those things.

But when we made
that bet for a cook-off...

You gotta have a
prime cook-off area...

I'm pretty competitive.

So I'll have the cook-off
and I'm not gonna stop there.

So basically, I'm
making a new deck

with a barbecue area.

Then I'm having
the dining room table

so we can all sit around and
eat the feed after it's cooked,

and then an arbour over it.

And then, a hot tub
right next to the shed.

This one's gonna be...

It started off being
a weekend project.

Might be a little bit more
than a weekend project.

We got a lot on the
go, and I'm really busy,

but I always love
a little project.

My idea usually snowballs.
That's usually how it happens.

I'll start off with
a little bitsy one,

and it'll end up with a new
hot tub, and a barbeque area.

Sounds deadly! I just like
making work for myself.

(Laughing)

Seeing what's down there.

So, hey. Me and Nikki's here,

getting ready to haul up the
deck and we got shorty supervising.

- Got a little helper
hopefully, eh, bud?

deck. They care about the food.

- They care about the visual.

You know, a hot tub

it, if you lose, it's cold.

- Geez, you should have told us

before to work out
our hot tub body.

You got a hot tub party too?

- That's beach.
- Oh, geez.

- How are you gonna fill
it up? From the harbour?

- No, I'm gonna
bring it out and sink it,

and then bring it back.

- Are you serious?
- No!

get the deck demo'd.

- Before we start the new deck,

I've got to rip out the old one

which came with the
house when I bought it.

Totally gone.

So, I'm ripping this one out.

I'm going to do a little
sandbox area for the kids

so they can play into
it, and the rest of it is just

gonna be grass and
some more flowers.

- What's the verdict
with your plants?

- Don't touch 'em.

- Typical Randy.
Don't touch his plants.

Don't mess with
this boy's garden.

You know those homeowners
that you go in and they're like,

"oh, don't worry about
the garden. I'll replant."

Randy's like, "touch my
garden and I'm tellin' ya..."

He's precious about his plants.

- Don't hurt the grass.

Watch out for the nails!

- Where are you going?

- Up there.
- Up the hill too?

- Well, geez, that's
where I gotta have it!

- Even though the
sills were rotted,

most of the wood is still good,

which is great news
because I'll be able

to use it somewhere else.

There's always another
job and another purpose.

we never specified wings.

- It's a three-course meal.

meal, a deck, beer...

Holy god, buddy!

I say get your logs
out and call it a day,

you're hallucinating there now!

That's why he's
gotta build a deck

and everything to try
to make his be better.

The concrete floor is cured,

now we can start framing
the addition at the back.

- It's a little different to being in
a bathroom tiling, little bit better.

Nice, getting the fresh air.

- We were gonna do
it, but you know what,

in the eleventh hour,
Jason called me and said,

"hey, I got the tiles
done on the other job."

Is there anything else,
you know, for him to start on.

I'm like, "geez, I got
the perfect job for you!"

Jason's looking pretty
catty there today you know.

- Yeah, covers the
bald head, Randy.

- Jason's a good
hand, you know what,

anything we need done,
he's right there to do it.

On time and it don't
matter what it is,

he's kind of like us. From
tiles, framing up, you name it.

He don't mind
taking on the action.

Which is a good thing.

That's hard to come
by, to be honest with you.

- Am I turning red? Geez,

- We're putting the door to get
into the living room right here,

so this is how you
enter the house.

Look, we're all busy,
we all got our own clients,

but we're able to
come together and...

He got the same
love for building,

just as much as us, so...
- There's zero competition.

It's just working together
and getting the job done.

- And you know what?

If we all can't sit around
and have a drink together,

then we all did something wrong.

- That's right.

The layout of the new
addition is looking mint!

But taking a closer look,

I want to change
things up a little bit more.

Right now, we're thinking
about trying to feature

some of the old wood.
We've got that beautiful ceiling.

We took up the floor, which we
had to do to pour the concrete floor.

So, there's not many elements
that you're going to see old.

When you walk in
through that front door,

that's what we want to highlight.
We want to show the character.

Once Jason's all done,

we gotta do something
with the existing roof

to kind of shore it
up and make it safe

and make it watertight.

And then bring on the
drywall on the inside,

and then bring on the keg
so we can have a dance!

We're in upper
island cove today,

and it's another pour.

Some day!

From brigus to island cove.

More concrete, more fun!

It's all about the
foundation today.

So putting an addition
onto the house,

you gotta put in the footings,

pour the concrete, you
want nice, wide footings,

and that's what's gonna make
all the weight of the load carry it.

Then you lay the walls
on top of the footings

and then pour more concrete.

Then you're ready
to start buildin'.

We got all the footings in,

now the boys are
framing up for the walls

and getting ready
to pour the concrete

inside the walls that
they're framing up.

But they got a lot of obstacles.

We got big ol' boulders that
we don't wanna really move,

so the boys got a little
bit of jigging around it.

It'll still be a straight
wall when we're done!

Jeez, ed, that don't look
like you're having fun!

Yeah.

Fun spot.

- This? No.

Looks like if you
touch it, that'll fall down.

- Oh yeah.

- So, Ed's the foreman
of the form crew

and we found out that we
need to carry the back level

of the house, the
existing house.

Yeah, we found... Like
a lotta these old houses,

there's no concrete
wall. It's only rocks.

And a lot of them rocks
is after founderin' in,

so there's nothing on the
back of that wall there now.

Like nothing. Just a hole.

So we gotta have something there

to carry the back wall.

- That'll take that. No trouble.

- Yes.

That's what we'll do.

- I ain't moving that,
so that side there

will have to rest on that rock.

We're gonna fix the structure
issue on the back of the house

by running a new floor joist

in and past the
old existing joists.

So, we gotta get our
floor joists in there,

in this area, plus
on the other side.

So, the floor joist is gonna
come from the exterior wall

to the concrete wall that
we're going to pour here new.

And run it in
past this mud sill.

It has to carry the whole
exterior of the existing house,

to two-levels, so
we gotta make sure

that we got a bearing point.
Which, this concrete wall,

is going to be the
bearing point now.

You gonna try to pour today?

- Gotta be done.

You know what? There's a
lot of work to go into an addition

that ain't really that
big. It's only 6 by 21.

But hey, definitely
worth it in the end.

You know what? The homeowner
needs it, it's gonna add extra space.

So, it's going to
be worth it for them,

so it's worth it for us.

Down in brigus...

The button house on the bay

is getting close
to the finish line.

We've got a lot of flooring
to lay in the new addition,

so I've got my guy
Jason on the job.

In the bedroom, we're adding a
straight run of hardwood flooring.

It's light, bright and
perfect for the space...

And it's the same
feel in the bathroom,

but with white sheets
of herringbone tile.

And Jason's work isn't over yet

a mosaic stone is going
on the fireplace wall,

giving the homeowners the update
they wanted in their living room.

- This is a nice light colour.

It's gonna brighten
up this room.

It's gonna look real good.

- With all the construction
complete on this $140,000 project,

time to bring in Sam and
Sasha for the softer finishes

and really pull things together

- so Linda's sitting room,

we went for a real
cheerful yellow,

which is also on the
outside of the house.

So, it's nice to bring
that yellow inside, as well.

But really, the
inspiration for this room

was her yellow bird chair.

- So much fun. That
chair is really fully Linda.

It's full of life. But the
best thing about the chair,

it's got a little
bit of blue in it,

it's got a little bit of green.

So we incorporated
that everywhere.

We pulled all our
colours from that,

and you can't not be
happy sitting down,

watching brigus in the
morning over the ocean.

It's such a great space.

- So, in the living
room, we really did

just really a refresh
of a lighter paint colour,

light and white, but
really still nice and warm,

to complement the
rest of the house.

- Updating your
paint in your house

is one of the biggest
things you can do

to really freshen the space.

And we wanted to freshen it up

with just some white paint.
So we put in a soft white,

which really
complimented the area.

Which was one of the one
things we really wanted to happen.

The addition is really
a beautiful space

that has been created as a
sanctuary for Linda and Dr. Button.

It's a beautiful huge space.

And then that ensuite off
of it. I mean, it's perfect.

It's a little spa for them.

The end tables
were a great find.

They weren't being used.
They were downstairs.

So, we were able
to get them repainted

and all of a sudden they
look like a brand-new table.

I'm so impressed that you can take
anything that's just an old little piece

that you don't even
realize, paint it, boom.

Brand new.
- Exactly.

Linda was really hoping
for white nightstands.

When we came across these wooden
end tables downstairs we thought,

"perfect." we'll change out the
hardware and it's an easy fix.

- The bedding is a really
important thing for this space.

It really ads the pop of colour.

Okay? So we have the
soft neutral tones on the wall.

We put a soft rug
down on the floor.

But then we add that pop
with that kind of turquoisey tone.

And then the beautiful Jessica
waterman quilt that's there,

which then ties
into that sofa...

The sofa.
- The sofa.

- I know.
- It's the best part.

- We have a little bit
of a crush on the sofa.

- We're very excited
about the sofa.

It was really nice to give them
a bedroom on the main floor.

So that this space
can be utilized

for many years to come.

- Big day today.

So Linda and Wayne
are gonna come in.

I know they been
waiting a long time for this,

so now it's time to go get
'em and show 'em the room.

- Wow.

- Beautiful.

- This is 'effin awesome.

You know, we started this at
the beginning of the summer...

- View is amazing.

- And now we
got it all finished,

so Linda and Wayne
are gonna come in,

see their new bedroom,
see their new bathroom,

and even see a little touch
we did in the living room.

I know they've been
waiting a long time for this,

so now, it's time to go get
'em and show 'em the room.

- It definitely was a
nice space to begin with,

and then taking
that wooden fireplace

and putting in the propane
fireplace, you know,

having them custom shelves,

kinda blends in
with the ceiling.

- Yeah, it's really gorgeous.

than picking up the remote,

hittin' the button,
instant fire, instant heat.

- Yeah. I love the stone, too.

I love the fireplace.
- Nice cozy space to sit back,

look out over the
ocean, watch the whales.

Nothing better than that.

I know them shelves, you
brought us a long piece of lumber.

But they got a
little bit of a story.

They came from
port-aux-Basques, I think.

- Port-aux-Basques area.

Our friends brought
them over to us.

They were two
big pieces of wood.

They were steps or stairs
originally in a fish plant.

- Oh, okay.
- So we're thrilled to get them.

- You want to have a
look at your sitting room.

- Yeah.

- Wow.

Oh, my.

- Beautiful.

- It is your gold chair.

- Oh, and the fabric...
- And the birds.

Oh, what a beautiful room.

- When you moved here, you
kind of used it as a storage room.

- We didn't know
what the purpose was.

We decided it was gonna be
where our piano was gonna go.

So I call it the piano room.

- Okay. So who
can play us a song?

- Nobody! (Laughing)

- This is your room, but we
got two of your rooms out there.

Wanna have a look?
- I certainly do.

- After you.

- The quilt. The bed.

- Oh, my gosh.

My gosh, my gosh.

- What a job.

And the draperies.

Oh... but this, look at this.

- It's comfy. (Chuckling)

- I could have a nap on this.

It's a beautiful couch.

Beautiful.

And the fabric is gorgeous.

- It's little capelin.

- The couch in the
window is just spectacular.

Was it from a house
here in brigus that you...

- No, no, I found that
over in ferryland, actually.

I found this in an
old wore down house.

I always know, there's
a use somewhere.

- Cozy.
- Oh my god. It's cozy.

Even sitting down that chair,

like I said, pop
open that window,

to hear the waves just
crashin' over the rocks.

- This is absolute...
Absolutely beautiful.

- Beautiful.

Our table... Our end tables!

- Now they're white.

- Oh, lovely.

And the tray ceiling, I love it.

I love the drapes
behind the bed too,

I think it's just...
- It's two windows.

Like I said, you turn
down the lights a little bit,

it's amazing, with
the high ceilings,

with the tray ceilings...

But you know, you can
lie down here and relax,

but we also got another place
you can lie back and relax.

(Laughing)

You wanna see your bathroom?
- I do.

Gorgeous.

- In this whole space
is your own retreat.

You got the tub, you
got the stand-up shower.

And that's what we wanted to
do with this, you know, addition.

Bring something that is yours.

From the trim, to the colour,

to your tub that
you really wanted,

that was the first
thing we talked about.

- It was. I didn't care
how big the bathroom was.

- Yes.
- Or the shower.

As long as I got my tub.

- It's probably a place you're
never gonna wanna leave.

- No. (Laughing)

- True. True. True. I'm not
gonna get anything done.

I'm gonna end up
doin' all the cookin'.

She's gonna wanna
be in here all the time.

- But you know what?
Before you can stay here,

we gotta meet your guests
and we got my team coming.

- Perfect.
- And then we'll leave you to your retreat.

Anything that's a challenge...

You know, you take
this beautiful home

and so many lines, so
much character into it

and to blend something
in, was gonna be tricky.

But hey, I never back
down from anything.

Now that it's all done,
really happy with it.

You know, I drive by and
you don't even look twice.

And I'm sure everybody
else is the same.

It just looks like this
was always here.

- What makes a
home, I think it...

When there's
part of you into it,

with the add-on, with every...

All the new things
that we've done with it,

it's now our home.

- You have to make it your own.
- Finally, it's our home.

- You have to make it your own.

And I think we've
done that beautifully.

- We're delighted.

- Now that it's all done,

we have some
special friends coming.

So, they're all dyin' to see it.

(Indistinct chatter)

Our dear friends, and see...

- Linda and Wayne just moved in,

and they made really good
friends with their neighbours,

which is Tim and Valerie.

Tim and Valerie is
coming to the party.

We kinda set the bar high
when we did their place.

- Oh my.

Holy cow.

- Being here in newfoundland,
especially in a small town,

everybody knows everybody.
So once you do a renovation,

then you get recommended
to the next person,

recommended to the next person.

But you're always
settin' the bar high,

because when someone
recommends you,

you don't want to do a bad job

because it looks
bad for them, too.

So every job we do,

we gotta make sure it's just so.

- We're absolutely thrilled

to have the buttons
as our neighbours.

We've become very good friends

and they've certainly
enjoyed our space with us

and now we're looking forward

to enjoying their
new space, as well.

We feel nothing but joy
for our new neighbours.

- Looks good. What do you think?

- Oh, I love it. (Laughing)

- It's great to be done.
- So happy.

- Colours are beautiful.
- That's right.

- Even with the huge bed,
there's still lots of room.

- Lots of room.
- Barrels of room.

The fireplace looks amazing.
It turned out awesome.

The detail is to die for.

It's no better feeling when
you can give the homeowner

back their house and walk clear.

Let them enjoy
it now for a while.

look at him, he's plopped down.

- I'm tryin' out
all the furniture.

(Laughing)
