it's a different house!

- I'm Randy spracklin. Third generation
builder, proud newfoundlander!

My team and I are
building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing.

We fight the elements
year-roun to get the job done.

It might be tough for
some, but not for us.

Because when this is
your view, it's worth it.

I grew up here in brigus,
and like any small town,

I seen a lot of changes and a
lot of builds on the waterfront.

It's a popular spot for sure.

Down on harbour pond,
me and the old man

are about to start building on one of
the last waterfront properties in brigus!

It's a catty project we're
really excited about,

but the ocean tides mean
it's definitely gonna get tangly.

We're headed there now to
scope the lot: Me in the rust bucket.

But the old man,
he's not wasting

the last days of summer!

- I've had a motorcycle
most of my life. I love it.

So, any chance
I can get, hop on.

If it were summer
all year-round,

this would be my
preferred way of travelling.

Randy makes fun of me now.

There's a movie with
old guys on the bikes

and that's what he calls me.

Old guy on a bike.

- We got the old timer clubs.

- You're getting
there. Yes. (Laughing)

Years ago this used
to be part of the pond.

And they filled
in over the years.

- Living in brigus all my
life and being into this,

every time I see an open
lot, I'm picturing a house.

So, open ground
there: Picturing a house.

Like, I'm even
looking at the rocks.

How can I build a
house on a rock?

So, when I see a piece of ground

and we get to build on it,

hey, that's what I love!

This is a really nice lot.

Pretty narrow, but you
got access to water.

We're gonna make a slip way
and there's not many lots left.

- It's very few, the
one's that's left now

are not going to be
gone for a long, long time.

- This project is going
to be an interesting one.

It's going to be brand
new, three stories.

The first level is going to
be drive-through garage.

Kind of like a carriage house.

One area for the cars.
The other area for guests!

Up on the main level, the
kitchen and the living area

is an open concept
with plenty of space

to entertain and
take in the views.

It has lots of windows
and loads of light.

And on the top floor is a study,

bathroom and the main bedroom

with one of the best water
views around the pond.

It's a beauty of a location. But it's gonna
take a lot of work to make it perfect.

Tide being high is
going to be an issue.

- It's gonna be a mess. Gets
the foundation on the ground,

I say you're going to be walking
in two feet of water all the time.

Other than low tide.

- I need to have
me duckie boots on.

We got the water
right next to us

and that water level
actually raises higher

than the piece of property.

So, this house is going
to have to be built up.

Probably like a foot and a
half above maybe from the road.

- That's what I kind of figured.

A foot and a half
from road level.

That would be the...
- Yeah.

Tide being high, we're gonna
have to dig four feet down.

Uh, hopefully find good
fill and not made ground.

- It's probably made.
- I would say.

The homeowners have a
good budget of $450,000.

But the project
is a long-hauler.

It's gonna be 10 months,

maybe a year before the
homeowners can move in.

The problem with doing
something so custom

in such a tangly
area with the tides...

That tide could come up and down

we could be shut
down for days, hours.

So we gotta have a big window.

Might go down to small,
but with three stories,

looking at the ocean,
ponds, slipway.

It's going to be really nice.

Now we just gotta get it here.

This is going to
be a tangly one!

The boys better
get their oilskins on

when they do the
foundation on this one.

(Rhythmic music)

While we're taking
on another big project,

we still have jobs up
and down the avalon.

One, two, three, go!

On the other side
of the pond in brigus,

the new bedroom addition

for the button's
house is all framed up.

Donezo!

And the roof trusses
are ready to be installed.

In the old fishing
village in petty harbour,

the biscuit box
renovation is moving along.

- There we go, opened up!

- And then, in the
countryside near petty harbour,

called the goulds,

we're doing a big renovation

on a huge single-story
home for the hanlons...

They want to
change the space to fit

their growing family's needs.

The new sitting room
is getting a feature wall

with a built-in electric
fireplace, and a large TV.

The old bedroom in the front

is now gonna be
an office for Taryn

and the mudroom for the family.

In the main bedroom, we're
building a custom headboard...

And we removed
the bathroom walls

creating a huge walk-in closet.

We moved the tub
under the windows

and built a big walk-in shower
with loads of space and light.

And way over in the kitchen,
there's a huge change.

The homeowners
changed their minds

and decided to go with a
brand-new custom kitchen.

The new design will
still have a large island

with a drop down table,
but it'll have all new cabinets

floating shelves, and
loads of prep space.

The change in plans
means more time and money.

But it's the right call
for Chris and Taryn

to get the home
they'll love forever.

We're goin' all new kitchen.

So now, they gotta
think off their feet

and figure out a game plan,
what we're gonna do in that kitchen.

So, I'm here to meet
Sam and Sasha.

Because sometimes, it's hard
for homeowners to make decisions,

they got them hundred ideas.

They need someone like
Sam and Sasha to come in,

take the hundred
and then bring it down

to one that we can work
with and get this job done.

- Looking good!

- It's come a long way, Randy!

- Yeah. It's coming
along, a lot of work.

- You've been busy.
- Oh my god,

closed up these doors,
ripping up all the tiles.

- This project is a lot of fun

because it's such
a transformation.

- They had a great home before.

It was beautiful, it was lovely.

But the layout wasn't
really functional for them.

- Yeah, so we got
this big old space.

You know what,
closing these doors off,

it don't seem
like it's a hallway.

It kind of makes
this room separate.

- Yes!

- I guess this is
the sitting area?

- Yeah, and it's like,
it's gonna be more

of a useable room
rather than just something

you kind of walk past.

And that's where
we'll do our fireplace,

our two-way fireplace.

- Two-way fireplace.
Electric two-way fireplace.

- Electric two-way fireplace.
- Bumped out.

- Bumped out.
- TV above.

- Bring in some wood. Randy!

- I know, right?
- You're doing a great job!

- We're going to do some
light colours on the wall.

Get rid of this brown.

- And then also, because
we're doing tile floor,

which you don't see a
whole lot in newfoundland.

We want to warm that up, right?

- So, what kind of pattern?
- Herringbone!

- Really?
- Just herringbone.

Just simple.
- Just a simple design.

- Just simple.
- No hard work.

- Throughout.

- Into the kitchen too?
- Into the kitchen.

- Yeah. When you
do the whole space

it'll make it feel more
consistent, right?

It's important to
keep that flow.

- It will look good.

I got one little more surprise

that the last time we were here,

they were going to keep
some of the existing,

put in some new.

But now we're going all new.
- Ah!

That's so good.
- Makes our job a lot more fun.

- So much more fun. I think
it'll tie more into the house, too.

We're really
transforming each room,

so it will just be that
updated elevated look

that really needs to go with
every other room were doing.

- It'll make the whole
house cohesive, then, right?

- I know it always
creates more work,

but it definitely will work.
- Yeah, no, it'll be fun.

- Randy just threw
us a huge curveball.

Full-on kitchen
has to be redone.

- Yeah, I thought we were doing

like, a little bit
of the kitchen,

but it seems like now
we're just doing the kitchen.

So, it's a little bit
more work for us,

but I think Chris and Taryn
are going to be really happy

that they decided to
also do the kitchen.

- Definitely.
- Yeah.

- We got a lot of
work in the washroom,

but we do have a
big walk-in closet

that we gotta figure out too.
- Oh, so gorgeous!

- Oh, this makes so
much more sense.

- What a difference
in this layout.

I love this tub area.

Free-standing tub.

Place to put your
drink, your book.

- Yeah, all that
beautiful light coming in.

- Yeah, exactly.
- We're going to do some

really nice tile in here.

Um, this is where
we're going to pop

in some colour in the tile.
- Because everything else

is going to be kind of
white. White porcelain.

Bring in some
colour in the shower,

then bring in the
brass fixtures,

and then a little bit of
wood in the vanity as well.

And like look at
the massive shower.

This is huge.
- I know.

- Let's just all get in
the shower here now.

- How many people
can you fit in the shower?

- Lots more space
than just three.

- My favourite
transformation for this house

would definitely
be the bathroom.

It used to have all those
doors. It had the really big tub.

So, I'm really excited to
see that space, you know,

really change into something
that will be used a lot

by the family and also, it's going
to be lighter, brighter, warmer.

It's going to come
together really nicely.

- We have a lot done.

I feel like there are some
possibilities of changes

that could happen along the way.

- Always.
- But we have a great start.

I'm so happy with
how it's coming along.

- I'm feeling really good.

As long as we
keep the same plan.

- Go team!

the button's bedroom
addition is all framed up,

and Paul's got the
team to raise the roof.

- You're clear!

- So, today we're
at the button's

and we're putting
on the roof truss.

She's going to be nailing
the truss on with me.

Just look at this.

This is what
brigus is all about.

- Al's on the ground
hooking truss up.

And Josh.

He's going to be
stripping off the shingles

to get ready for getting it all
closed in and weather-tight.

Today and tomorrow
is our window.

So, we're going for it.

- Stressed out.

Trusses is a hard
job for anybody.

And this is my first
time being full up here.

See if I get through the day

without Paul yelling
at me to get down.

Shaking and everything. Woo!

It's going to be a hard day.

And the fact that they're going to
put me up there nailing with them.

It's going to be a challenge.

Hopefully, Paul got
his patient panties on.

- Watch your fingers
underneath, watch your fingers.

- Two inches.

- Relax now.

Nikki, get back on the
other side of that 2 by 4.

There's nothing
holding it up out there.

- So, last year at Betty's,

when we done trusses,
I was on the ground.

Big difference. There we go.

I was the one on the tag line,

which is basically...
I'm just guiding it in.

But now when you're up there,

you're setting them,
you're nailing them,

you're making sure
everything's where it needs to be.

Sitting right. It's a lot more
pressure being up there.

So hopefully... Hopefully I can
handle it and not crack today.

You might see Nikki's
back walking down the road

halfway through the trusses.

- Nikki, truss over your head.

- Okay, I'm not ready.

You want to make sure
you're alert, you're on point,

and you're running
with the system properly.

Any little hiccup,
you're two steps behind.

22 and a quarter.

- 22 and a quarter
for the other.

Don't measure them all because
they might not all be the same.

- On average, you wouldn't
normally nail it to the gusses?

- I'd nail the
gusses on your side.

- When you make
that one little mistake,

it sets everything back.

And I gets frazzled
pretty easy too.

- So today, we're
at the button's

and we're putting
on the roof truss.

- Stressed out.

Trusses is a hard
job for anybody.

- Nail her on, Nikki.
- Good?

- How come you haven't had
a turn climbing out yet, Nikki?

- 'Cause I can't
keep up with you,

let alone do anything else.

- Oh, she been doing best kind,

she'd be doing
better if she relaxed.

- Too short!

I didn't pick the right trade
for my height, that's for sure.

- Hey, you could have been
a confined space person.

- So, nobody had to
see me or hear me?

Paul knows his stuff.

He likes to do stuff right

and I got a lot of
respect for Paul,

but sometimes, he's
really hard on me.

- You gotta pause for the
cause sometimes, Nikki.

Being flat out don't
get you anywhere.

- So, by the end,
when we start getting

to the last four to five trusses
when everything was working good

and we had the
system still in check.

Although I couldn't keep
up with him with the nailing,

I was confident that I was
doing the process right.

- Lower it down a bit.

- Down a little bit.

- I gotta go towards
you a half inch.

- Get her plugged down now.

- I'm flush there now, Paul.

- Best flush.
- Oh yeah!

- So now we got this done.

You know, it's a good feeling,

now this is behind us, but
there's still a lot of work left to go.

- Paul, do you want a
freshly washed grape?

- No.
- I'll share a grape

for a peanut butter ball.

- For the pedestal, you got
the peanut butter balls on

you think you can offer
something better than a grape?

- Chocolate-covered blueberries.

- Next time we does trusses,
will you let me up with you?

We've got the whole team here

and we're going
to blitz this place.

We've got to try to
get the fireplace in.

We gotta get it all
done for the painters,

so it's going to
be a hectic day.

Chris and Taryn,
they were planning

on saving half of this
kitchen, going half new,

keeping half the existing.
Now, it has gotta go.

So, if I take it
apart piece by piece

like it's going in, someone
else will be able to use it.

Which, they're still a
good set of cabinets,

it's just not really
going with the style

that we're planning
on putting inside.

- Like a trim party!

I love interior finish.

Finishing work is
probably one of jobs

Randy feels most comfortable
sending me to, I'd say.

- I got the pocket
doors ready to be hung.

- Right now, everything
seems to be going good.

We're operating. Seems like
we got all the material for this.

Knock on wood,
nothing's gone wrong yet.

But once I speak,
stuff starts going wrong!

behind this wall.

We gotta make a fireplace here,

so I'm going to just...

which right away, we got a wire.

Lots of wires.

It's never easy.

Never knocked on the wood
hard enough this morning.

- Yeah so, we're
in the goulds today.

If you call on the sparkies,
it'll probably take, what...

Maybe a day for them to come.

That's what we do, run the plug.

So, this wire, I can actually
disconnect from that plug

and the boys can kind
of configure it after.

So, thumbs up on that.

I'm gonna hit the breaker,

so when the light goes
out, power is gone.

- Okay, you want to hear me?
- I can hear you in, brigus!

Being the contractor,

like I can kill the
power here, unhook it,

but I'm not going to
try to run it and redo it.

Sparkies will come
in and do that stuff,

so I'll just unhook it,
get it out of the way

so we can make a hole and then
they'll do the finishing touches.

Yeah, so I can cut
out the fireplace,

get the insert in,
moving forward.

- So, the design
calls for this fireplace

to be bumped out into this room,

but it has to be
sunk into the mantle.

So, I'm just slowly putting it
together piece by piece and...

It'll make more sense
when it's all done.

- We got all the trim done,
ready for the painters,

the headboard is finishing
off, fireplace is all framed up.

Even all the kitchen
cabinets, they're coming down.

So, we're all ready
for the painters,

then bring on the
tiles. Good day!

We're at the button's in brigus

and we got a big day ahead.

We gotta sheet over this
roof, try to get it all shingled,

try to make it watertight for
the electricians and plumbers.

They don't like getting wet.

We got full team today.

We got Paul, we got Nikki,
we got al, and we got Josh.

I think the old man's
even going to stop out.

(Whirring)
- I love doing shingling.

Everybody got a good flow.

And we work well as a team
when we're shingling, so...

- The buttons are adding
a whole new addition

to the side of their home.

The house's unique
design in brigus,

with loads of
nooks and crannies.

So, the tangly job for us

is sticking the new
piece to the old piece

so the new piece
don't look like new!

- Got her!

- The challenge
with this roof here

is how to tie this to this

so that we can get
everything watertight

so we don't end up
with a leak from rain,

or wind, or snow build up.

So, and the other
real challenge is,

how do you tie it into the
architecture of the house

and make it
appealing to the eye.

You never know,
this one could be

the next most photographed
house in brigus.

- You never know!

- Al, I'll take some shingles.

- Take some shingles?
What, you got them all used?

- Paul do, yeah.
- In a while, you'll get a few.

After the roof is on,
we can seal her up

and start insulation.
And wouldn't you know...

A truck full of insulation
just showed up.

(Beeping)

- This delivery
is actually early.

I had to leave the
job site to come in.

We wasn't prepared
today to have the delivery,

so we had the forklift in, we
had to move around some stuff.

It's always the way.

When you're not ready
for it, it comes early.

When you are, it comes late!

We got seven pallets today,

so I'll bring out the
forklift, unload it.

Hopefully, I don't
break nothing.

Hopefully, it fits in the shed.

- Every time Randy
gets on the forklift,

he runs out of propane.

The insulation for the button's
house arrived a day early.

Just when I thought we could
get a break in the schedule,

my forklift broke down.

- I knew this was
going to happen,

but I thought it was
gonna be the propane.

But instead, it's a
radiator that broke.

Change out of me good shirt and get
into some old stuff and give Randy a hand.

Should've unloaded
it all by hand.

Don't know what's
wrong with him.

- This is how you hand bomb.

I say we roll them
there. Watch yourself.

- It is what it is.

Now we gotta get
them all in the shed.

So, I had to get the team
to come and help me.

- Randy called
us to do a favour.

We gotta move
all this insulation.

- But I had to bribe them.

A feed for insulation.

- As soon as the food
shows up, we're stopping.

- Now, we'll have
an insulation race.

- In the countryside, at the
hanlon's house in the goulds,

we're making great
headway on this huge Reno.

We got all the drywall done.

The plaster and the
painting is now finished.

And the next big
change is the huge tile job

throughout the main floor.

It's Jason's favourite
pattern: Herringbone.

- We want it to run
perfect from the front door

into the sitting room.

Once you're going
with this herringbone,

you're committed.

So, we gotta keep it going
nice and... nice and even.

- It's a lot of work
and it looks amazing,

but the tile job isn't over yet

- yeah, so there's
four different tiles

going in this bathroom.

Today we're starting to
put the tiles on the shower.

They're blue, and
they're gonna be stacked

on top of each other
with straight grout lines.

We got a laser level
set up so, you know,

we'll get them perfectly
level and perfectly plumb

and the walls are good in there.

So should look real nice.

Little bit of a challenge.

You know, it looks
great when you're done.

- Back in my
hometown of brigus...

It's a perfect day to start
digging the foundation

on the harbour pond lot!

The brand-new house is
going to be three stories,

with a drive-through garage
and guest room on the bottom.

The main floor will be
raised up above ground level,

with an open concept
kitchen, dining and living area.

Upstairs is the main
bedroom, bathroom and a study.

Lots of windows on every level

for that perfect
view of the bay.

Mint!

The water is coming
from the pond,

so now, when it
goes... We're at low tide.

So, when it starts
coming up to high tide,

yeah, that water
will be up pretty high.

Which means it's not "if"
we hit water, but "when".

(Quacking) Uh-oh!

The duck went for a swim.

We're making a duck pond.

Good place for making a
swimming pool, anyway.

- Well, pick up one
that's big enough.

- What we found out this
morning wasn't really good news.

You know, we found a little
bit of rock on top of shale,

but we dug a test hole
and probably, what...

Four feet down,
maybe three feet down.

We hit nothing but pug.
- This stuff.

- Which is just old mud
that'll never compact.

It'll never settle.

So, you don't want your
house sitting on that or it'll...

It'll make it go lopsided.

- Disastrous.

- Uh-oh!

(Chuckling) Duck
went for a swim.

We're making a duck pond.

In brigus, the dig for
the new foundation

at the harbour pond
lot is off to a wet start.

The water is coming
from the pond,

so now, we're at low tide.

So, when it starts
coming up to high tide,

yeah, that water
will be up pretty high.

- So, every house along here
got this water underneath it.

Because as the tide rises,
the water just comes in

until it meets the crest.

When we first started this job,

we dug down and one of the
older people here in the town said

we should dig a little farther,

which led us to digging
the whole thing out.

Always knew we
were going to hit water.

We just didn't know we're
going to hit this pokey topsoil.

So anyway, here we are.

- Always listen
to the old-timers,

they knew everything...

- That's why you should
listen to your father more often.

- The next step
is dig it all out.

Bring in blasted rock,
compact it with the big roller,

before we put any foundation.

Any concrete goes
down on this ground,

it got to be all rolled in
with big, blasted rock.

Because we don't
want the house to sink.

- That smell?

That's what you call
rotten trees, rotten...

grass, everything. And
salt water mixed into it.

Yummy!

You definitely don't
want to fall in that.

You'll smell like
that for a week.

While the foundation work
continues at harbour pond,

around the corner, the button's
addition has really taken shape

this project is great.

It's right here in
the heart of brigus,

looking out over the ocean.

But we do get rough weather.

We get four seasons in one
day here in newfoundland.

So, we need to make sure
all the heat stays inside.

Let's break this
open. Get started.

So, we're using rockwool
comfortboard80 exterior insulation

which is durable
and energy efficient.

- Did you get me a drill?
- Uh, nope.

- I've got my old man
giving me a hand.

You know, the old school
versus the new school.

He's not used to insulating
places back in the day,

so today, I'm going to
show him a thing or two.

We got the building paper on,

so now we're going to install
right over the building paper.

Luckily enough, we already
got the studs marked out.

So, when we screw our
washers into it, good and solid.

- Straight forward.
- Straight forward.

It's a perfect day
to be doing this.

Nice and warm outside.

Come another six months,
it won't be so toasty.

I won't be here
with my shorts on.

- It's probably my only
concern is learning from Randy.

- I'm a good teacher.

- Especially when
he calls me "old man".

(Laughing)

- The benefit of using
exterior insulation:

It's energy efficient.

That's the number one thing.

The other benefits
is, it controls moisture,

resists mold and mildew,

it good sound proofing,

plus it's made out of
natural recycled material.

Almost like a rock,
what I'm standing on!

- Insulation's come a long way

since we started at these
old houses of course.

We opened up the walls and
found sawdust for insulation,

newspaper or something on
the outside over the old boards,

and then they put
the wallpaper over it

and that was their insulation.

- It was frosty inside
just as much as outside.

- So, hey! How you making out?

- Looking good.
Getting through it.

- Mint.

Good stuff to
work with, isn't it?

- It's excellent.

- So, we're doing stone
wool throughout the addition.

We're not even going
to stop on the exterior.

There's going to be
interior, exterior walls.

Ceiling, floor joists.

It's non-combustible and it
prevents the fire from spreading.

It protects your family.
Protects your home.

But we're not
going to stop there.

I'm ready to put it to the
test. The old man is skeptical.

But I'm gonna prove him wrong.
- I got the torch.

- Pssh, that's not a torch.

This is a torch.
- Holy... flame thrower.

- Hey, don't try this at home.

- Light her up!

- Whoa!

- Look at that!
- Works.

- Touch it on the
other side, still cool.

That's what you want
when a fire's happening.

So we're here in
the goulds today

and we're trying
to finish it off.

There's a whole lotta
people moving around.

One of the last big things:

Install the fireplace around.

So Paul's here
trying to get that in.

And hopefully we do, 'cause
tomorrow we gotta be done.

- So, this wall here is going

to be a big
feature in this area.

It's going to be full on
custom panel fireplace

and the fireplace is two-sided,

so you can see it from this room

and out in the new kitchen.

It's going to have
custom built-in cabinetry

along the bottom,
so it'll look pretty good

when it's all put together.

- The boys built it
offsite. We brought it in.

Now Paul is fitting
it all together.

It's like a Jigsaw puzzle.
You got a bunch of pieces

and you're just trying
to make them fit.

It's gonna look amazing
in the end, but hey,

we got a little
ways to get there.

At the front entrance, the
new mudroom slash office

is really getting close too.

Looking really good.

Everything is coming together.

Just a few little
detail touches,

like hanging the hooks.
A few paint touch ups.

So, we're in the kitchen.

There's a lotta work
going on there, too.

So, it's just everybody
trying to come together

and get it all done and
get all the final touches.

The cabinets are looking great.

A lot of work yet though.

Number one on the list
is finishing the custom

drop-down table that
attaches to the island.

Yeah, so definitely
here in the shop now,

business has picked up.
Now, we actually got p. J.

And Matt here in the shop

and we're pretty much flat out.

'Cause whatever Sam
and Sasha can think of,

or any other homeowner
that may come along.

Like we need to keep
up with the demand.

The vision always was
that the woodworking shop

is always do something that
you just can't buy anywhere else.

You're not gonna
go to a big box store.

It's definitely
one-of-a-kind pieces,

why I love the old wood.

Like this table.

So yeah, this is wood
that we brought in.

It's birch. It was all rough.

And then the boys
cleaned it all down

to make it nice and smooth,
getting ready for a finish.

So, Taryn and Chris, they
loved the stained piece.

Now, we just gotta
stick it all together.

You know, by the end
of the week, hopefully,

it'll be installed so we
can have a feed on it.

You know what?
There's always concerns.

This is only how
many pieces we got.

One wrong cut
and we got no more.

Good thing the boys
have got measuring tapes!

With the final pieces
finished and installed,

this $180,000 Reno is
ready for Sam and Sasha

to do the final touches before
Chris and Taryn move back in.

- It's nice when you
are redoing a home,

to have some cohesiveness.

In this house, there's a little
bit of wood in each space.

We've carried it
from the kitchen,

into the sitting room,
into the mudroom,

and then into the bedroom
and the bathrooms, as well.

- The kitchen now
has a drop-down table

that Randy and his team made.

It's beautiful. It's solid.

It's all connected in one space.

So, it's really family oriented.

The mudroom is
a fantastic space.

You have that fantastic wallpaper
that's done by krista power.

I absolutely love it.

- If you're gonna go
dark with that colour,

put it on your trim, put
it on your baseboard,

carry it throughout.

(Soft music)

- The bathroom
transformation is amazing.

- It's insane.

- Just with moving the tub.

We've made it really beautiful

with the white marble
tile and the hex tile.

And then, also
the beautiful blue

brought into the
space in the shower tile.

- Yeah. It's just so
spa-like and so relaxing.

The transformation
of this house is insane.

This house has a feeling
of excitement and energy

and I feel like it's
gonna be a beautiful start

for them in here.

get everything done,

sitting room here now,

with a nice fireplace,
nice floating shelves.

It really makes this room.

This is beyond our
dreams, for sure.

- Yeah, I think we've
definitely taken full advantage

of the existing... The
bones of the house

and really... it looks amazing.

- It's certainly an upgrade
from a coat rack in the corner.

You know, takin' that
doorway from there,

then move it to here, and
then you had a little desk

in the corner with the bed.

So now you got a
nice big working area,

but you got a big area
to hang all the coats,

sit down for the kids
to put on their boots.

- So much storage.

Oh, I'm gonna
enjoy working here.

- But there was a lotta
work into the cabinetry.

To the desk, to the bench.

It all came together,

and then the wallpaper
made this room really pop.

- Wallpaper is just stunning.

And it ties everything in.

- I was skeptical when
we talked about wallpaper,

but it looks awesome.

- Oh, yeah.
- Yeah.

- Amazing.
Colour is a little bit

outside of our comfort
zone sometimes.

But seeing it all together now,

it makes you feel so at home
when you enter this place

and that's what we wanted.

(Gasping)

Oh my gosh.

- What a nice bright
room. What a difference.

No more wall-to-wall curtains.

- No more wall-to-wall curtain.

- I think that's
probably the best part!

- We never did a whole lot here.

Kept all the floor, just
brought in the paint.

But we made a new headboard.

We tied it all together

and made it into
a nice little retreat.

- Everybody out, I
want to go to bed!

You got your closet.

- Oh! So much more storage!

I love this! Look at that!

- Before, they had two closets.

- They swing in
different directions.

When the doors are
open, you can't get by.

- It worked, but it
was really small.

So opening it up into
a long rectangular,

you got like, a little sit
down area for your makeup.

A whole lotta hanging
space and a whole lotta space

to just throw stuff in.

'Cause I don't know
how to fold very well,

so more drawers, the better.

- Oh wow, you can see
actual light from the windows!

No more walls, no more doors!

This is so amazing!

- So open.

- Look at that...

Look at the tub!

Oh, it's so nice.
- Such a beautiful tub.

And just free-standing, without
the big enclosure around it.

Takes up so much less
space. Looks so nice.

Just awesome.

- This was the big thing.
We took down that wall.

Because you had the shower
inside of them windows.

It was an odd little space.

It worked, but it didn't
work for you guys.

So making this
all open and bright.

- I feel like we've taken
ten separate spaces

and turned them
into two, and just big,

beautiful open spaces.

- This is like the
bathroom of dreams.

So much more space for the kids.

Nice and tall for you.

- Yeah, we got the height.
- Oh, it's so good.

My favourite is having
all that natural light,

it changes the whole
look of the room.

- We still got one
place left to go.

- I can't... I can't
take anymore.

(Laughing)

(Gasping, chuckling)

- It was definitely a good
idea to kibosh everything.

But the right move to
tie everything together

was to go all brand new.

I don't think you would've
achieved what you got here now

keeping any of the old.

- And we actually have
seating for everyone now.

- I can't believe
how great it looks.

And even though the
kids will hang their art,

we also made another little
secret department for the kids.

this side... if I was smaller.

are gonna love that.

- Geez, I would
hang out in there.

- We've always wanted
a secret compartment.

- Yeah, I had one of those
wall cubbies when I was a kid.

So like, that is...
That is super cool.

They're gonna love it.
- Every kid loves a hideaway.

- We actually made this house
into a home for your family.

From the kitchen to the
mudroom, sitting room,

right into your bedroom,
your own little retreat.

- We moved in not that
long before the Reno

and it was a house that was...
It was built for two people.

house for a family.

So it's a space to grow up in.

our favourite bands

is a local band, hey rosetta!,

and we just love their music

and one of their songs
is "carry me home".

For us, like the... The
Reno really for us meant,

making this home, where
we wanna be comfortable

and where we wanna,
you know, raise our kids.

And you know, eventually,
they'll move away and...

And have their own lives
and we always want this place

to be somewhere where
they can always come home.
