They got here by following
a trail of symbols

This stone pyramid pointed
the way to a massive boulder,

apparently carved
into the shape of a turtle.

‐ This is the best
thing we've found so far.

‐ The turtle pointed
the way to another symbol

a circle with a distinct
set of lines inside.

Symbols expert Martin Flagg

theorized it could
be a Golden Lily marker

for a back door.

‐ So the Imperial family
would have needed

a different way to get
into the treasure tunnel.

They needed
a back door to get in,

where not a lot of people
could see them.

We need to look
this area over real good.

We're gonna look
for some rocks piled,

and if we can find that,
that may be the way in.

a formation of rock

that resembles

like the marker.

just like in the symbol

That could be the back door
that we been looking for

has led us to
this formation of rocks.

Now we have to
come up with a plan

to figure out
how to get inside it.

it could connect a tunnel

from the front door
to the back door.

this line goes through

it goes through our pyramid

and the hole at breach six.

I wanna rip
these rocks out and see

if there is a tunnel
behind that formation.

It's like 50 tons.

Our excavator's
only 25 tons.

I mean, how are
we gonna move this?

We can't get down
to the front side of it,

there's no way
to get over the cliff.

This is tucked into
the face wall there,

piles of rocks up here.

over the top to even work it,

it's gonna be

you go to move these rocks

you could set off any kind
of traps they have inside,

which could be any

up permanently.

And the Golden Lily would've
had a map or something

telling where and what kind
of traps they have inside,

which we don't have.

We did see some anomalies

that show that there could
be a tunnel or a void there,

was based in part
on his recovering a piece

many trees with symbols

cut down in order to hide them

from other prospective hunters.

seen in our drilling days.

It could be bedrock,

chewed up my drills

I've worked with cement
for 50 years

in construction
on different sites,

but I've never seen this
this quality.

It's so strong, so hard.

but I'm assuming

because it was so hard
to drill through,

that it could possibly
be bunker‐grade concrete.

And if it is
bunker‐grade concrete,

then we're on the right track.

was invited to Germany

and he met Hitler.

‐ In December 1940,

General Yamashita
was sent to Berlin

on a six‐month mission
to meet Adolf Hitler

and officers
of the German High Command.

‐ During this visit,

Yamashita is known
to have inspected

the hardened bunkers
along the French coast,

and it is alleged
he may have obtained

the Nazis' secret
concrete formula

directly from Hitler's
top engineers.

‐ So Yamashita knew Hitler.
‐ Yeah.

Hitler gave him the secret
to bunker‐grade concrete.

‐ Nazi concrete?
‐ Yeah.

‐ The Nazis were teaching the
Japanese how to make concrete?

‐ I think so.

‐ They had some, you know,

stuff that bombs
couldn't get through.

And they shared that
with the Japanese,

and the Japanese said, hey,

you know, this is great stuff.

We can use that to hide
and protect all our treasures,

and no one will be able
to get through it.

A bomb won't
even get through it.

‐ During World War II,

while the Allied Forces
were strengthening

their air and sea defenses,

Germany focused
on land‐based fortifications,

constructing bunkers

made of a special
reinforced concrete.

One such stronghold
was the Wolf's Lair,

Adolf Hitler's top‐secret
headquarters

on the Eastern Front.

Even after deliberate
demolition efforts

by the American forces
after the war,

the main complex
still stands today.

In the Pacific,
the Japanese forces

were also constructing similar
bunkers and tunnel systems.

It is possible
they may have used

the Nazis' secret
concrete formula

when building their infamous
tunnel defenses

for the battles
of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

if it is hardened concrete,

or what it's made out of.

and concrete expert

to examine the core sample
unearthed by the team

in order to determine

exactly what they're
trying to drill through.

some samples with me,

and I wanted to see
if you can at least

help us verify
what we're dealing with.

You know, the guys,

they're at
a total standstill,

they're breaking through bits

and these are the two samples
that they sent me.

Just by looking at these,
I was wondering what

you can tell me about them,
if anything.

‐ Hm...

it looks potentially
like bedrock of some kind.

It's very gray rock.
Okay.

This one's kinda
interesting here.

This one's got
some smaller material,

almost looks like
sand particles in here.

And there's kind
of a gray cast to it.

Interesting.

Let me take a look
at something else here.

the sample from Bingo,

Gerard believes he has
an example of concrete

that matches it.

‐ So take a look at this.

This is shotcrete,

which is typically
used to build pools,

to line tunnels,
things like that.

And this shotcrete is made
of Portland cement and sand.

Now it's kind of gray.
This is definitely gray.

And notice how there's
no coarse aggregate in this.

‐ Yeah, no big pieces in either
of them, very similar.

‐ In either of them.

And lookwe have some
sand‐sized particles in here.

Got a lot of sand
in this shotcrete.

There's a similarity there that
we're gonna want to look at.

And so we're gonna have
to spend some time on this.

to hear some results.

the team gets the results

from concrete specialist
Gerard Moulzolf.

on the concrete samples
we sent you.

‐ Yes, this is the one core
sample that we received.

And while this
while this core here

looks like
it's got sand in it,

which looks like
it's Portland cement

it's actually not concrete.

‐ In base camp,
the team is receiving

the final report
on the core samples

from geologist and concrete
expert Gerard Moulzolf.

‐ It is actually
an extruded lava flow.

In the Philippines,

that whole core of the island

is made of volcanic material,

a great majority
of the island.

‐ Well, if we do come across
a concrete‐like substance,

is there a way to tell
the difference in the field?

‐ Now this is a concrete
that was made in Guam,

and this is
essentially a coral.

And the mixtures
that would've been produced

by the armed forces from Japan

that maybe are doing
something very quickly,

they probably would've
hand‐mixed it with a shovel.

‐ With a US blockade
surrounding the Philippines

and resources dwindling,

it is believed
the Japanese engineers

may have used any possible
materials available

as aggregate in their concrete,

including crushed coral
and seashells.

they mixed some type
