Today I want to show you how to create an effect
in DaVinci Resolve that over the years has been

used in the intros for countless movies and
TV series. And it's actually still being used

today. Most recently I saw it in the intro for
Stranger Things season 5. But it's not the name

or the the logo effect. No, it's the effect that
they use to open an episode. It's this effect.

So, let me show you how to create this effect
in DaVinci Resolve, also in the free version,

by the way. And it's super easy. I'll show
you how to make it look exactly like this. So,

how it looks in Stranger Things. But, of course,
you can also tweak it and customize it so that

it fits your style or the style of the video that
you're working on. So, yeah, here we go. So, first

things first, we need a title. We need text. So,
just drop a text plus title on the timeline and

make it, I don't know, 30 seconds long. You can
make it however long you want, of course. Then,

pick a font you like. I used molot or molo here
for my example. And the color they use in the

intro for Stranger Things is red. And then also
add a solid color clip underneath, just plain

black. And make it the same length for now as the
title. And then let's animate the title. Now guys,

when I say animate, I don't mean animate animate.
I just mean animate, if you know what I mean. A

few simple things to make it look more like film.
So what I did is I added a few effects. So select

the title and put the playhead on the title.
Then go to Fusion page, select the first node,

the template node, and hit shift plus spacebar and
find the film grain effect. I think in the free

version you'll only see the FGR effect here,
but I'm not 100% sure, so let me know in the

comments. Anyway, add it and tweak the settings if
you want. Then with the film grain node selected,

hit shift plus spacebar again and add the camera
shake effect. Now, why do I want to add the camera

shake effect? That's because when a movie is
shot on film, the image moves a bit. It's like

it has a slight vibration almost, and that's
because of the movement of the film when it's

being pulled through the camera. Also, the title,
pay attention to it next time when you watch an

older movie. The title also shakes a bit. Titles
on film are not perfectly still like a digitally

added title. And so, that's why I added the camera
shake effect. Now, with the default settings, the

title obviously moves way too much. So, you have
to tweak the settings in such a way that it moves

a lot faster. So, the movement has to be faster,
but not a lot of movement. You know what I mean?

So, you can just play around with the settings if
you want or copy the exact settings that I used.

Just pause the video here for a minute. Okay. And
then finally, with the camera shake node selected,

hit shift plus spacebar one last time and add a
subtle glow. I mean, you can make it less subtle

if you want, but I went for something subtle,
right? Barely visible glow. And that's it. Now,

I say that's it, but you know, always remember
you can add as many visual effects as you want.

The cherry on top is always always the music.
And I used music from audio for my sequence, the

to the intro sequence. So, we're done in the

fusion page. Let's go back to the edit page. And
well, I want to add one more effect, actually,

one that I also use in the intro for Stranger
Things, and that's a film dust and scratches

effect. Now, there are two ways you can do this.
If you're in the studio version of Resolve, just

add an adjustment clip on top of your title like
this, and then go to the color page, and here,

look for the film damage effect. apply it and then
just tweak the settings. Make the color white. And

I don't want any color change. So, I'm going
to set these here to zero. And I'll also turn

off this big scratch here. But I'll still have
these white specks, the film dust. And this is

what it looks like then. And if you're in the free
version of Resolve, you don't have the film damage

effect. So, you'll have to use an overlay. And a
film dust and scratches overlay in this case is

basically a video clip of dust and scratches. It
looks like this. Now, you can buy one on websites

like Invado or just Google it and usually you'll
find a free overlay. And then all you have to do

instead of adding the adjustment clip is add the
overlay on top of your title and set the composite

mode here to screen. And there you go. Film dust
and scratches. Okay. And once all that's done,

we have to create the main animation. You know
that zoom in fly through the title effect. And

it's two parts. We have the title going from red
to transparent and then the zooming effect. So,

how do we do that? First, select the title clip
and enable the dynamic zoom down here. And then

also in the text settings, enable dynamic zoom.
Now, when I play the video clip, now it zooms out.

Right? And you can only see the zoom effect when
you when you actually play it, not when you're

navigating the timeline down here. But anyway,
when I play it, you can see that it zooms out,

right? But we don't want that. I want it to zoom
in. So just hit swap here. And now you'll see that

the green and the rectangle have swapped. So the
green rectangle is the starting point of the zoom

and the red one the end point. So I'll leave the
green one where it is. And then I'll put the red

one in the letter we want to fly through, so to
speak. And when I play it now, we get that nice

slow zoom animation. And now all that's left is
to make the title go from red to transparent.

So, put a video clip of whatever you want to
show through the title underneath everything

and then copy the title and
put it at the bottom like this.

Make sure that everything is in the same order.
Then make all the layers above the bottom title

invisible. Select the bottom title and make
the title color white. and then go to the

fusion page and just remove the glow and the
film grain. Then go back to the edit page,

make the video clip visible again, and set the
composite mode to darken. And boom, we can see

the video clip through the title. So, here's the
thing. If you only want that fly through effect,

all you need is a white title at the bottom
with that dynamic zoom and a video clip with

a composite mode set to darken. But of course, we
also want the title to go from red to transparent.

So just make everything visible. And then shorten
the solid color however long you want. So the

title will stay red for the duration of the solid
color. Right click on the end of that solid color

and add a cross dissolve transition. Then select
the top title and put the playhead at the start of

that cross dissolve transition. Go to the settings
of the title and make a key frame for the opacity.

Set the playhead to the end of the cross dissolve.
Make another key frame for the opacity and set it

to zero. And now you'll see that the title will go
from red to transparent. And that's basically it.

That's in my opinion the easiest way to create
that opening sequence. But once you get this

effect working, analyze it. Analyze what every
layer does. Because like I said, for the base

effect, you only need two layers, right? The video
clip and the text layer with the zoom effect.

Everything else is optional, but it's important to
understand what every layer does so that you can

use these techniques and the the the concept
for other effects and for other edits. Okay,
