we live in a cynical world,

a divided world.

Well I say the world's problems
are due to the fact that

half of us
live in truth

and the other half
live in fiction.

pagan evergreen tree,

devouring your heathen
feasts and opening presents

that are born of the idolatrous
god of the almighty dollar,

then you might as well
break out your stone altar,

Instead of eliminating

it doesn't exist.

that God's lessons stopped

with the final chapter
of His book?

Let me tell you a story.

- How is it that old folks

always got some kind
of story to tell?

I was about your age.

Maybe a little taller,
a little older.

Anyway, there was this girl,
Marcy Duncan,

and it was Christmas time
and I didn't have any money.

Well, I didn't have
enough money to get her

a gift that was good
enough for her anyway.

She was such an angel.

So I did the only thing
I knew how to do.

I wrote her a poem

but I never gave it to her.

You see, I was afraid.

I thought what if
it's not good enough?

What if she doesn't like it?

What if she thinks it's stupid?

So I entered my poem into
a community writing contest

at my favorite bookstore.

I always loved that store

'cause it reminds me
so much of Marcy.

- So you were afraid
to give it to the girl

but you weren't afraid
to put it in a paper

where hundreds
of people would see?

- Right, whatever.

I'm trying to make
a point here, okay?

- I sure hope so.
- Anyway, it got published--

my first published work,
actually.

And everyone said
I should be so proud.

But I didn't write
that poem for everyone.

I wrote it for Marcy.

Then some years later when
my first book got published,

I had a book signing
and guess who walks in?

Marcy Duncan.

And she had cut that poem
out of the paper.

She kept it with her
all those years.

She said it was the most
beautiful thing

that she had ever seen.

But even still,
I missed my chance.
