When I was 15, I went to see
the magic show with my friends.

Six of us went, and
I showed up early

so I could wait in line
to buy the tickets.

I bought one, two, three,
four, five, six tickets.

A little later, my
friend arrived here

and I went to hand
out the tickets,

but there were one,
two, three missing.

I was sure I had asked

for one, two, three,
four, five, six tickets.

After seeing this,
my friend said,

"Are you sure you bought

one, two, three, four,
five, six tickets?

When you came back, there
were one, two, three missing.

But you bought one, two, three,
four, five, six tickets."

(audience applauds)
No one believed in me,

so I went back to the
ticket booth and made sure

I bought one, two, three,
four, five, six tickets.

But again, when I came back,

there were one,
two, three missing.

I was sure I had gotten

one, two, three, four,
five, six tickets.

(audience applauds)

Yeah, so this time,

one of my friends decided my
other friend would go with me

to get the tickets this time

while he kept one,
two, three in his hand.

He's a genius.

So five of went to get one,

two,

don't worry, this
is the last part,

But when we came back, oh my,

there were one,

two,

only three.

But remember, one friend
was holding three tickets

just in case, right?

So we were able to see

- I'm from Iowa.

- From Iowa.

What part of Iowa?

- The middle, kinda
by the capital.

I live in Grand
Rapids, Michigan.

And one of the weird
things about my town,

one of the weird
buildings and businesses

that used to exist there
is a flypaper company.

You heard of flypaper?

- Yes.

- Flypaper is like
the glue strips

that hang from the ceiling
that would catch flies.

Kinda gross, right?

They don't really use
'em much anymore, no.

Do you have anything
weird from your hometown?

- On my grandpa's
farm, he had those.

- He had fly paper, yeah.

Anything else weird
in the hometown?

- Lots, too much to tell.

- Too much, too much
to tell in Iowa, right?

(audience laughs)

Well, I was exploring this
old factory in Grand Rapids,

and I was digging through a
box of old sticky flypaper,

through a bunch of
floppy disks, and I found

this really weird matchbox
at the bottom of that box.

I didn't really understand
why it was in there,

why it was packaged so carefully

with so much junk
put on top of it.

I'm gonna let you
off though, Jillian,

and I will tell you what's
in that box in a moment.

But first, I need you to
select a card, Jillian,

any card you want out of there.

You can even look.

(audience laughs)

There you go.

Jillian, if you would go
ahead and write your name

on the face of that card.

And also, I have a hobby.

I like to collect different
items, sometimes strange items.

And once, I bought this wooden
box in an antique store,

and I wanna show you this
very interesting collection.

The part of collection of
this stack of old tickets.

And...

And see, it's
pretty nice tickets.

- [Aiden] Yeah.

- I don't know if it's
from the 19th century.

And you can see there are
different destinations

such as Italy,

Australia, United States,
China, Germany, Turkey,

so a bunch of
different destinations.

What's your name?

- Maya.

So we'll try something with you.

Maya, in a moment, I will

The most outrageous part of

that we could do it too at home,

that the people watching at home

could do this very same feat.

We're gonna test
that out tonight.

So I got some random
people from the audience.

You guys look pretty random.

What's your name?

So here's the deal, guys.

We've got a bunch of

You can grab it.

You can hold onto it, Laurie.

I showed you that.

First, I'm gonna show
you how this works,

and then I'm gonna
teach you how it works.

I'm gonna take the fork

and I'm gonna place it into
my hand just like this, okay?

So watch the fork
really closely.

All you do

is you put all of your energy
and your focus into the fork.

And as you do this,

you'll actually start to
see that fork start to bend.

Can you see it bending already?

- Yes I can.

- You can see it bending just
like that, just like that.

- The more you
think that that fork

doesn't even really exist,

the more you'll actually
see it start to bend

until that fork completely
bends in my hand just like that.

So Laurie, here's the deal.

We're gonna do it,
we're gonna make it

a little bit easier
for you guys.

So I have to explain to
you exactly how this works.

Chad, you grab a fork.

Jimmy, grab a fork.

I have another one.

So here's the deal.

Whenever you first do this-

- Yeah.

- You're actually not even
supposed to look at the fork,

which doesn't make
a lot of sense,

but I'll explain
to you what I mean.

You need to repeat a sentence
after me, Laurie, okay?

Just say there is no spoon.

- There is no spoon.

- Cool.

Now I know we're using forks,

so you just have to think
about it with a fork.

There is no fork, meaning
the fork doesn't exist.

It only exists in your mind.

That fork's not
even really here.

If you imagine the
fork is bending,

that's what makes it bend.

Now, to make sure that I explain

exactly how this
works in the best way,

we're gonna place the forks in
the complete darkness, okay?

So Laurie, you're gonna hold
onto the bag in one hand,

fork in the other
hand, just like that.

Perfect.

We're gonna do the
same thing over here.

So Chad, you're gonna grab
a bag in your right hand,

fork in the left hand.

Perfect.

That works too.

We're gonna grab another
bag for Jimmy over here.

Make sure you hold
it just like that.

Perfect.

Yes, hold it in one hand
just like that, Jimmy.

Fork in the other hand.

Perfect.

So here's the deal. Each one

of the forks goes inside of the
bag just like this.

Once it's in there,
fold over the top.

so we can't get to it.

I want you to go and hold
'em up first, hold 'em up.

You need to get all the heat
in your hands in the fork.

Make sure all of your heat is
on the fort just like this.

So we're gonna put this
one in also just like that.

Fold over the top.

We're gonna do the same
thing with this one,

so kind of hold it
up just like that.

That fort goes in,
hold over the top.

Now hold onto it just like that.

Perfect.

Hold it up just like this.

My fork is the exact
same thing, just like so.

So Laurie, Jimmy, and
Chad, here's the deal.

You guys have to really
focus on that fork.

You have to visualize that
the drawing of the fork

on the outside of the bag

is the fork that
is inside the bag.

So imagine that that drawing
on the outside of the bag

is actually the real fork.

Imagine that that
fork inside the bag

is now going from a
straight position in the bag

to a bent position.

So it's going from
straight to bent.

So imagine that the fork,

the drawing of the fork
is the fork in the bag,

which is the fork in your mind.

Now, if you guys do that,

soon as you feel like
it's actually working,

turn the bag around because
that's gonna represent

that that fork is now bent.

Turn it around once you feel
like it's actually bent.

Chad, not so much.

Okay, Jimmy, are you feeling it?

Slowly feeling it?

Jimmy's feeling it.

He's feeling something
slowly turning around.

themes growing up

play with little water soakers

and we'd shoot each other.

However, we weren't allowed
to play this in the house.

So what we did, me and my
brother, as a fun little prank,

we would always have
five water soakers

and we would fill
one up with water.

Then we'd play a little game
where we would take turns

shooting them at each other,

and then one of us would
get blasted with water,

also getting the whole house
wet, thus getting in trouble.

Tonight, we're gonna do that.

Emma, what I want you to do
is you're gonna face that way.

Emma, one of these
soakers has water in it.

You don't know
which one that is.

I don't know which one that is.

There's a tank up here.

We went ahead and
taped over the tank,

so that way, you
or I can't tell.

Emma, I'm just gonna mix
these up one at a time.

And Emma, whenever I feel ready,

I'm gonna have you
turn around, all right?

Emma, you may turn around.

You may go back there

and you can mix 'em
up however you please.

whichever one you want.
