here, and my daddy before me.

I seen things in these woods
no man's supposed to see.

And I know things no
man's supposed to know.

These woods be a strange place.

(subtle, tense music)

My grandmama always called
this place "Hole in the Wall."

"There be two worlds,"
she told me. "One for men

and one for magic."

And betwixt them two there'd be a hole.

Sometimes things pass through that hole

and them things she called
"the enchanted."

(stick thuds)

(bird screeches)
(ominous music)

(footsteps pattering)

(birds flapping)

(shotgun blasting)

- Good quail tonight, Pete.

Hey, yeah, yeah, we goin' get some supper.

Get your nose to the ground. Stay down.

Good boy.

Good boy.

Stay down, stay down.

(Booker T whistles)

(dog barks)

Good boy, yeah.

Yeah, you're all right.

You ain't good for nothing,
but you still my boy.

- (mysterious voice echoing)
Killer...

(water splashing)

We goin' to eat
good tonight, Pete, yeah.

You're the most hard-headed dog.

Come on, let's go. Get to the next trap.

(birds calling)
(insects chirp)

Come on, Pete. Here. Good boy.

(ominous music)

(Booker T humming)

(owl hooting)

That old owl sound like a witch on fire.

There you is.
(laughing)

This rain goin' to put
that fire out, witch.

(tense music)

Squinch owl on the house, sign of death.

Ain't no folks livin' there anyways.

(tense music builds)

Let's go, Pete. Come on.

(car whooshing)

(car engine rumbling)

(engine shutting off)
(thunder crashing)

(birds calling)
(heavy door slamming)

(footsteps crunching)
(insects chirping)

(gate creaks)

(ominous music)

(owl cooing)

- That old owl's been on that
trailer ever since they came.

Trailer should have been
burned up a long time ago.

Now it's too late for the fire.

You keep your big mouth shut this time.

(dog whimpers)

Commence to holler, I'm gonna whip you,

you and that squinch owl.

Both be digging my grave with
those stumpy foots of yours.

Lord have mercy.

(ominous electronic music)

(truck engine rumbling)

(bird calling)

- Who you be out there?

(insects chirping)

- It's me, Royce Hagan, Mr. Booker T.

Peerce Hagan's boy, you remember?

(car door creaks)

(Booker laughs)

- You sure do favor your daddy.

That's a fact. No lie.
(laughs)

You favor him, I thought
you might be his ghost.

But I reckon no ghosts
like to feel my skin.

- No, I don't reckon it does, Booker.

- When you come on in here?

- Ah, I just came in this afternoon.

Got my Cadillac stuck in a
marsh down there a couple

of miles back and had to walk on in.

Ah, the old house is in
pretty damn good shape.

I was really surprised.

- I tend to it now and then.

Besides, we so far back in these woods,

nobody be messin' 'round with it.

- Everything seems to be right there.

Lot of Daddy's old stuff,
and Aunt Lilly's, too.

- Uh-huh.

This place be sort of a museum.

But I don't be changin' nothin'.

I left it be.

I just sweep and dust here and there.

Be your place to do the changin'.

Been hopin' you'd come,
ever since your Aunt Lilly died.

Been a while back. What took you so long?

- Well, hey, come on, sit down.

I've been out to sea.
Been ridin' freighters

around the world.

- [Booker] Hoo-whee! Ridin' those waves
a long time, boy. (laughs)

Yeah.

What be your plans now that
you got your foot back in sand?

(owl cooing)
(insects chirping)

- I been thinkin'
about cattle ranchin'.

- You got the land.

Just waitin' for those cows to come home.

- You know, Booker, I turned down a lot

of money for this land.

Can't figure out why I didn't take it.

Anyhow, somethin' brought me back here.

Might as well be cows.

And that beats not knowin' why I came

or why I wanna stay.

- Time ain't for wastin' on the whys.

Just figurin' out those
whys is like a dog runnin'

after his own tail.

Leads to nothin'.

- Yeah. Well...

That's just what I've been doin', Booker,

chasin' my own tail
around in a big circle.

- You reckon your heart
told you to stop a while?

- I guess you could say that.

I'm gonna give it a try anyhow.

- Well, I can't tell you
about your own self, Royce,

but if you're looking for a place to stop,

this here land is as
close to your blood family

as you goin' to get.

Just follow your instincts, that's all.

- Well, I guess we'll see if
my instincts do me right.

You reckon you can help me get

that old Cadillac outta
the marsh tomorrow?

- I'll be takin' care of
Peerce Hagan's boy, you'll see.

(hammer strikes)

- Well, we're almost to
the end of it, Booker.

ain't no gator going

I left you in town last week,

all you had was a no-good Cadillac,

and now you got a pasture full

of heifers fixin' to drop calves,

and a fine mare in the crowd.

That's somethin'. Sure is somethin'!

- Yeah, well, once I make my
mind up to do somethin' I tend

to act on it quick. That way,
I stay interested.

Wanted to get a couple of
calves in there right away

so's I can weed out the sorry cows.

'Sides, that'll gimme time
to look around

for a couple of high quality bulls.

- Now that's done, how do
you want the back pasture?

- That's looking all right.

Sure do appreciate you helpin' me, Booker.

- Yeah, any time you need
help you just holler.

'Course, you don't know
but I be might pleased

that you stayin' on here.

- Yeah? Well, now I knows it.

Come on, I'm hungry for a nice cold beer.

- [Booker] Now you talkin'!

- [Royce] You ever been married, Booker?

- No, sir.

I had a woman living out here
with me a long time back.

But I took her back
where she done come.

I learned then to keep my women in town.

I likes to tip in love, tip
my hat and walk right out.

Don't want no woman havin' to
die in love for me no more.

- But you must get lonely out here, huh?

And wish you had some
nice lady around, no?

- I done told you, I tried that before

and I find it worse being lonely

and not alone than bein'
lonely with just myself.

You hear what I'm saying?

- Yeah, I know what you mean about that.

- Never get used to that kind of pain.

- [Royce] What do you
reckon this is all about?

- They come to work.

They livin' out there

- Them's Perdrys.

- Say what?

- They call themselves Perdrys.

And if I was you, I wouldn't
get too friendly with 'em.

- How's that, Booker, because
they wear them weird clothes?

- [Booker] You heard what I said.

- Well, I'm gonna go on out there

and see what they're up to.

- I'm goin' home now. I'm tired.

One thing more, Royce, they be different.

(door opens)

(inquisitive synth music)

- Mr. Perdry, Royce Hagan's my name.

- It is a pleasure.

- Well, I see you have everything
under control out here.

- There's little for
my children to do here,

and we're good workers, you know.

We thought we could help you on occasion.

Surely, you can benefit
from our assistance.

- I don't doubt that
for a second, Mr. Perdry.

Looks like you got a
pretty good crew out here.

- [Booker] You know, I
must have cat blood in me.

Never get tired of fish.

And today I'm goin'
fishin' and catch fish.

Anyway, all I want to
know is there any water?

- Fact is it's pretty
low down by the creek.

- Oh, that's nothin'. Can catch
fish out of a water bucket.

- Well, here, take that with you.

It'll keep the skeeters off your neck.

And you can smoke it, too,

for my first two calves that done come.

- [Booker] Is that so?

- Yeah.

- [Booker] They doin' good?

- Yes, they're real good.

- And them Perdrys, you
run 'em off the place?

- Shit, no. As a matter of
fact, I kinda hired 'em on.

They helped me get

that old orange grove
out there back in shape.

You were right about them workin' hard.

- You ain't gettin' too
funny with 'em, is you?

- Booker, I don't know
nothin' about those folks

'cept they dug and
planted me a great garden.

Now they're workin' out

there like somethin' I
ain't never seen before

on those orange trees.

So 'fore you go warnin' me off

of 'em again, I know they're, uh...

What, a little strange,

I guess, but I like that about them.

They're real shy, quiet. Like
real backwoods, you know?

- Maybe too backwoods is the problem.

Now, I'm not saying you
ought not work with 'em.

Just stay your distance
and don't get too personal.

You hear what I'm saying, boy?

- All right, Booker, I
wasn't thinkin' on it anyway.

I'll try not to get too
personal with them Perdrys.

Well, I think I'm gonna ease on into town.

We is goin' fishin'.

(Perdrys chattering)

- Thank you, Mama.

- It sure was nice of y'all

to bring us food all the way over here.

Haven't et this good
since I can remember.

(Perdrys chattering)

- Alls you do is pick flowers all day.

- And you know why?

Because all she thinks about is Royce.

- [Both] Roycie, Roycie, Roycie, Roycie.

- No.

- I told her today that we good...

- How about some more bread, Mr. Hagan?

- [Royce] Yes, ma'am.

- [Mama] Help yourself to more greens.

- Don't mind if I do.

- [Mama] Twyla made them.

- You cook 'em in hog jowl?

- It could not be pork. Mr. Hagan.

We eat no meat.

- [Royce] You don't? How come?

- We don't like the taste of meat.

- Well, if you don't like it,
go ahead and I'll eat it.

(all laugh)

(tractor rumbling)

- [Perdry child] Oh, look,
Papa. Lookit, it's Mr. Hagan.

- [Perdry child 2] That's it,
Papa. We finished our work.

- [Papa] Good. Time to go home.

We put in a good day.

- [Royce] How you makin' out?

- [Papa] Absolutely well.
We've finished for the day.

- [Royce] You sure have
done a fine job, Mr. Perdry.

I figured this is just
about what I owe you,

and I sure do appreciate
you workin' so hard.

- Oh, no, Mr. Hagan,
you owe us nothing.

- Well, please take it
and please call me Royce.

And that goes for you,
too, you gigglers.

I'm gonna go out and look
over my cows. You wanna come?

- [Perdry girl] Oh, no.

- [Royce] Boy, these two are a
case, ain't they, Mr. Perdry?

- [Perdry girl] Hey, look,
there's Twyla. She'll go.

- She'll go.

- You go, Twyla. You'll go.

- [Twyla] I better not.

- Oh, come on.

- Maybe she's scared just like you.

- I'll go.

- I'll have her back just
after dark. Don't worry.

- Have you spoken to her yet?

- No, I did not think it necessary.

She seems to be following
her natural instincts.

You know, I've sensed
that she knows it's time

for her to leave us.

- [Royce] Are you scared?

- [Twyla] No. Can we rest a bit here?

- Sure, yeah.
(insects chirping)

See 'em?

They seem to be doin' all right.

- They look so sad to
be alive, so frightened.

They must know their end.

- Nah, I don't think they're
ponderin' over their future.

Look at that out there.

All the grass they can
eat, water to drink.

Ah, they don't have it so bad.

They're livin' for now. They're lucky.

(mellow synth music)

(ominous music)

(owl hooting)

You okay back there?

- [Twyla] Yes.

- Just checkin'.

Felt that shiver run up your backbone.

- It's that owl and the wail in the woods.

They're screaming like
they know something.

- Well, what is it that they know?

- I can't say. I just feel some danger.

(cow mooing)

- [Royce] Hey, you ain't one

of them psychic people, are you?

You know, one of those people

who say they can see
things before they happen?

- [Twyla] I told you before,
I know nothing of the future.

I can't see things before they happen.

- [Royce] I'm glad of that.

- [Twyla] I only know
the moment. I feel it.

It's a sense, like fear, it just comes.

(cow squealing)

- [Royce] You know what it
is I like about you, Twyla?

You are scary.

- [Twyla] You mean I frighten you?

- Well, I don't know if
that's the right word for it,

but whatever it is I like it.

Hey, isn't that Booker's
truck pullin' outta there?

- [Twyla] It is.

- [Royce] Does he come by here often?

- He doesn't come to visit,

but he leaves for us things
that he brings from town.

- Oh, he does, does he? Don't
you folks ever go into town?

- No, we don't want to.

So it's a big help us that
he brings these things.

Still, my family and I are afraid of him.

- Booker? Why in the
hell be scared of Booker?

He wouldn't harm anything
that wouldn't bite back.

- I don't know why. He frightens us.

But he knows this so he
doesn't get too close.

- Yeah, I noticed that.

You better get on in now.

- Must happen that I see
you again soon... alone.

(mellow synth music)

(bird cawing)

- [Booker] This be a
clean killing. Yes, it do.

Ain't a natural thing, Royce.

Something very strange goin' on here.

Come out of nowhere,
just like out of the air.

- [Royce] Well, whatever it is

that killed this calf,
you think it'll be back?

- [Booker] Hmm, can't say.

Something like this be hard to predict.

- Yeah, could be it's
just passin' through.

- That's right. I passed through
here my own self yesterday.

And I saw that Perdry girl
sittin' up on the horse with you.

- Yeah, you reckon that's got somethin'

to do with this, do you, Booker?

- I done told you to stay
clear of them people.

Ain't no jokin' on it.

Now, I've been livin' out here
in these woods all my life

and I tell you there's
somethin' strange goin' on here.

These woods have the
reputation of the power.

When I was a young'un, there
used to be a conjure doctor.

Us called him The Swamper.

He used to come all the
way from New Orleans

to gather roots outta these woods.

And the word passed on and my
grandmama used to send roots

to conjure doctors all over the country.

That's where the name "Hole
In The Wall" come from.

The hoodoo puts its name on these woods.

Peerce and Lilly knew
about the strange power

these woods hold.
Ain't that so?

- Yeah, I heard some of
those stories, Booker,

but that stuff's like folktales
that never really happened.

Anyway, what's all this
got to do with the Perdrys?

- Wouldn't be a folk tale

if it be the truth
turned and shaped by time.

What you got here look like
a wolf done killed your calf,

and there ain't been no wolves
in Florida in over 40 years.

Now, these Perdry people, they come

in here just like the
wolf out of them woods.

I've been livin' here all my life

and I've seen some
strange things goin' on

and these Perdrys be one of 'em.

- Yeah, well, Booker, if
they be so strange to you,

how come it is you bring
'em supplies in from town?

- And what you be, a
hound dog snoopin' around?

Now, I ain't saying not

to help the Perdrys
get along in the world.

Just tellin' you
not to let 'em get close

to your heart, that's all.

- Well, I always watch out for that anyway.

- I'll be bringing you my own gun to use.

I'm gonna have to get one.

That just be a nasty killin' here.

Last night, I heard the wind a-howlin'

and a witch owl a-squinchin'

and I know something was
happening in these woods.

Come outta the air...
(bird cawing)

Out of nowhere.

(insects chirping)

- [Mama] Do you understand, child?

- [Twyla] I think so, Mama. But why?

- We were given the power
to choose a new life

and that, my dear one, is a rare gift.

- Is it really true?

It's so hard to believe
that we were once--

- Hush, child.

You must never let the words

of our secret pass through your lips.

You must remember this.
Never! Do you understand?

- Do the others know?

- No. Only you and
your father and I know.

We have told you because
you're the first to leave.

Are you frightened?

- No, I don't feel afraid.

- That's good because
the choice we have made

may be too difficult for us to live by,

and we must know if we have
made the right decision

before the fall comes.

- How will you know
it's right, this choice?

We will wait to see if you can survive

in this new life you're about to enter.

- What if he won't take me, Mama?

I see it in his eyes when he looks at you.

(horse whinnying)

- Well, there's only
one room left to paint.

- That little one with
all the pretty things.

- That's my Aunt Lilly's
room, my daddy's sister.

Hey, you look great.

- You don't mind that I
wear the Aunt Lilly things?

- Nah, you can do whatever you want

with that stuff in there.
Now on, that's your room.

Wanna go for a ride?

- Great. I'll get the hackamore.

- Shoot.

You heard, Pete, you were there.

I told him about messin' with that gal.

Now he livin' with her.

outta that situation.

(truck engine rumbling)

just looking at the colors.

They're all so nice. I
don't know which one to use.

- Yeah?

- [Twyla] Who are they?
(ominous music)

- Well, seems to me that
must be Booker's Granny Mae,

and that one's of my daddy, Peerce.

That might be Aunt Lilly, I don't know.

- [Twyla] Who did them?

- [Royce] Beats me. Booker might know.

- May I ask you?

- [Royce] Sure.

- I would like it that
you not look in this room

until I bring you here
after the walls are painted.

- Yeah, okay. (laughing)

- I believe $49.95 is too
much to pay for those tires.

I'll tell you, I went out there

and I had 'em mounted up on my four grams

and it is not light enough.

What happens is the mud
packs in 'em like that

and they get in that mud
and they just spin and turn

and throw mud and throw frogs
and everything else out there.

I don't know what to think
about 'em, I tell you.

I think they're too much money.

What do you think about it?

- [Charlie] I don't think I believe it.

sellin' greens or somethin'.

I heard he got land-rich off

that piece your Aunt Lilly gave him.

- Oh, yeah, I reckon he did.

- Hey, you all want some beers?

- Schlitz.

- So where you been anyway, boy?

- Well, I tell ya, ran a few blocks,

down South America a lot.

God, I missed Florida.
Nothin' like it. That's good.

(all laughing)

- (Garcia) Aw, man.

- (Charlie) You know, don't you,

- your daddy and mine are probably two

of the finest huntin' guides the state
of Florida's ever known.

Except for Booker.

That old leg of his never
kept him outta the woods,

but he old now.

- Folks around here still
big on huntin', you know.

You know Tillis Atwell?

- Oh, yeah.

- Oh, believe it,

they say he's the
hottest huntin' guide

that they got around here now.

Ain't nothin' that hot about him.

He got some hot dogs, that's
about all he's got is hot.

'Cept his wife,

and I'm about ready to
go see her out right now.

This is really amazing.

Let's turn on the light.

- I've never done
anything like this before.

I felt it the first time I
came in, some special feeling.

This must have taken you a
lot of work to do all this.

Ah, this is really beautiful.

You got a whole wall here left to paint

if you take all that stuff down.

- [Twyla] Well, I have no
more pictures to paint now.

(cow mooing)

- [Booker] Royce, you in
there? Get on out here.

There be another calf killin'.

- What?

Any tracks?

- Rain disappeared 'em this time.

Rain be proper fortune, you know,

if it ain't workin' for you.

- Come on, Booker, where's the calf at?

- A while yonder.

doesn't think about rain

when Moses commenced to
pourin' frogs on the kingdom?
