Izaiah is meeting us at the house
to talk to you about Banneker.
It's a family friend who just started
-as an academic adviser there. -It's fate.
Or luck.
Or, at the very least, something good.
Isn't that cool?
Yeah. So cool.
There you go.
[sighs]
[plates rattling]
Ooh. [chuckles]
Little trouble on the dismount.
I wasn't trying to listen,
but I can't help but hear.
You're not going to break my boy's heart, are you?
I don't want to break either of our hearts.
I mean, I like him more than I've ever liked anyone.
But Tyrell's dream school is Banneker,
and my parents' dream school for me is UCLA.
Tyrell and his Juliet will be separated by 3,000 miles.
My bestie and her boyfriend--
they went to separate schools.
They couldn't even last to Thanksgiving.
I mean, Tyrell and I are so happy, but we're...
so new.
What if it's better to just get out now
before either of us gets really hurt?
MARTIN: Tyrell,
meet Izaiah Hawthorne.
Always happy to meet a future Banneker Lion.
Thanks, Mr. Hawthorne.
[chuckles] Call me Izaiah.
MARTIN: Well, me and Smitty
don't want to intrude,
so we'll wait in the kitchen.
-Can we get you anything to drink, Izaiah? -No, I'm good.
-Thank you. -Okay.
From what I hear, I'm in the presence of chess royalty.
-I do okay. -[chuckles]
Well, someone with your skills and grades
would be a perfect fit for Banneker.
-You think so? -Oh, yeah.
Absolutely. But what's more important
is if Banneker's a perfect fit for you.
Before we get started, why don't you hit me with any questions
you have before I give you my spiel?
This is probably beyond the scope
of what I'm supposed to ask.
Lay it on me.
My girlfriend might be going to UCLA.
How am I supposed to make it work with her
if I go to Banneker?
I feel you, Tyrell. [chuckles]
My girlfriend just dumped me.
Oh, man.
That's tough.
That's the thing about life--
endings, even the ones that gut you,
can always lead to better beginnings.
I hate Dana put you through that.
-I will talk her down. -No need.
I explained everything to my supervisor.
-I'll be fine. -Just saying,
no matter how much money she's slinging around,
-you're invaluable. -I don't need you
or anyone to referee for me.
She's not the first difficult family member I've dealt with.
I can see that.
But you really are a force.
[scoffs]
Some may argue I'm too much of one.
Well...
They'd be wrong.
-[clears throat] -I'll, uh, I'll go check on Peaches.
Mm.
-Ted? -Yes.
Do you want to tell me...
what it was?
What do you mean?
What you ever saw in Leslie.
-Tell me. Come on, tell me, tell me. -[giggles]
It was fire.
But it was just a kiss,
-and I don't want to make too much of it. -Oh, no.
No, no. Mm-mm, girl, we are not gonna jinx this.
-No. -[chuckles]
But, baby, you know, us Thomas women,
we do have good things happen to us, right?
So tell me this.
Was it good enough for you to wash Tomas all up out your head?
-Hmm? -Tomas who?
-[squeals, laughs] -[laughs] Okay?
-Yes. -Look, okay, well,
I have some things I have to handle for work.
-Okay? -All right.
So call me if anything changes
and let me know when I can see Peaches.
I will.
As soon as I see her,
I will let you know
and I will give her your love.
-Okay. Do that. -Mm-hmm.
-Will do. -Bye, Mama.
Bye.
-Love you. -I love you, baby.
[chuckles softly]
Oh. Eva.
[chuckles] Eva!
[Vernon and Sharon chuckling]
Now you get on home, Vernon,
before somebody sees us and gets the wrong idea.
-Especially my wife. -Mm.
[Vernon and Sharon chuckling]
Well, well, well.
If it isn't Senator Dupree sneaking around
with the wrong Articulette.
Delicious.
