The naval base, Idaho Falls, her
parents. I had Eisenhower staff looking

over the continental United States for
her. She was nowhere to be found.

One can't disappear just like that.

My life was over. I was heartbroken.

My life was just finished.

I mean, my wife even decided that she
preferred women.

I was all alone.

I was out in the cold, watching the
cold, Danny.

When you're alone in the middle of
winter.

So you went back to Europe?

I was on my way.

And then I remembered something Mary
said.

That she wanted to do research.

So I remembered medical nuclear
research.

And I called every hospital on the West
Coast.

And I left word. And the day I was
leaving, she called.

I was in the same hotel room.

The same hotel.

How did she find you?

Oh, she heard that a mad Frenchman was
looking for her and willing to turn up

mountains to find her.

Was she in Washington?

She never told me.

She said that maybe one day, God
willing, we would meet.

It wasn't to try and find her.

It was hopeless.

Our worlds were so different, though
bound to be more different.

I'm sure you would have followed her
where you're allowed to.

Who knows?

You know, when I was saying goodbye to
her, that truck's horn came on the line,

and then when I hung up, I heard that
same truck's horn.

And I rushed to the window and five
stories below, I saw this girl coming

the phone box to the cab.

And as she was about to get into the
cab, she turned and looked up and smiled

me.

And I called Mary, Mary.

But I was hopeless.

She got into the cab and they drove
away.

How sad.

And you never got remarried.

Do you still think of her?

Once a day.

Every day of my life.

See that face.

Looking up at me and smiling.

Waving.

But who knows?

I mean, not being her. Could have been
anybody.

There's lots of Marys.

Mary is such a common name.

I'm sure it was her.

What did she look like?

She was cute.

She had long, dark hair.

And a smile like only Michelangelo could
paint them.

Dimples. Picture of love.

Like in that movie, you know what I
mean?
