Previously on The Great Eight, the top
eight drivers heading into Tulsa battled

it out for $10 ,000 and points towards
the individual championship.

Kai Kelly, number one right now, man.

Kai Kelly came in looking to extend his
points. He beat Justin Swanson in round

one and took down Giuseppe in round two.

Kai Kelly takes the win. Nice job.

Damon Merchant was struggling with an
oil leak all day.

I don't know where that oil comes from.

But fought his way into the final.

Oh, it's Damon Merchant heading to the
finals.

Holy, what a rush.

It was a close race until Kai's
parachute released early and Damon won

great ace.

He took home $10 ,000, 10 points, and
moved into second place on the

leaderboard.

I mean, we just worked our ass off all
day in the heat trying to get this done,

and we made it happen. Like, homegrown,
hometown, this is what you get.

Kai still has a commanding lead over the
rest of the field, but all these top

drivers will race for points towards the
individual championship and a chance to

win $10 ,000.

Hey, Firebird Raceway, how y 'all doing
today?

We're here in Boise, Idaho at Firebird
Raceway.

This track opened its doors in 1968 and
has been run by the same family the

entire time.

This track is in the northwest, and it
sits at an elevation of almost 2 ,700

feet above sea level.

The air quality at this altitude will
make it harder for a lot of these cars

make power they're used to.

Today, we're running the Great Eight.
It's the sixth of 14 events spread

the entire country, and things are
heating up.

Here's how it works. If you win the
Great Eight, you get 10 points.

You also get $10 ,000.

If you runner up, you get seven. And if
you make it to the semifinals, you will

get three.

Those points go towards an individual
championship that will be worth $100

at the end of the season.

Tonight, everyone will be eager to knock
Kai out in round one to prevent him

from opening up his lead.

the top eight drivers currently in the

Invitational class. That's why you're
racing tonight.

Going to go over our points standing for
the grade eight, right?

First place.

between Axeman, Giuseppe, and Damon

Round one of the grade eight tonight.

I drew Scott Taylor. We're consistently
in the grade eight. We're doing good.

We've got to stay in there, so we've got
to do good both days. Kai's got a

pretty big lead on us right now, and
everybody's got like 25 or 27 points to

13. So in the grade 8, that's a pretty
big gap there. He needs to go out early,

and I need to win one to actually make a
move on the points.

All right, number two.

Number two is Nate Saylor and Kai Kelly.

All right, Nate, now is your chance to
do the rest of the guys and yourself a

favor, knock Kai out in the first round.

And then that leaves it wide open for
people to catch up to him, all right? We

talked about that. We need to hear it.
That's the strategy. I like it. We have

Kai Kelly.

We need to take him out first round. I
think I have the car to do that. We have

a car that goes down great in these kind
of conditions.

He's been running really good, but I
think with this new setup at this

elevation, he hasn't done yet. I'm
hoping that he doesn't get that figured

So we're going to put a tune -up in it
that we know will go A to B and quickly

and hopefully take Kai out this first
round. If we do that, that gets us,

obviously, some more points and into
round two of the grade eight.

He stops him from accruing points. He's
got such a big lead right now. We need

to put a stop to that.

Lizzie versus Kayla, first round. My
God.

We drew Lizzie Musi. She's a tough
contender. She won in Tulsa. I'm excited

see how close we are at the stripe, and
I think it'll be a hell of a race. Goal

today is to win the grade eight. I think
that's everybody's goal in the grade

eight. Like I said, it's a do or die. We
need to close the points gap and put

some pressure on Kai and Damon.

Which means our fourth and final pair
will be Axeman and Damon Murphy. Big.

Axeman. This is a good opportunity for
me to get Axeman out of that number two

position, solidify myself in there, and
see if we can really make up some

It seems like I run him or Nate Saylor
every week, and they both have my

and that's why we did the upgrade, so
that we could try to be more

We've been right there just a few inches
behind and did the upgrade, but looking

at this, we made some right calls. It
looks good until it didn't, so we just

to get in there and dig in and make sure
to make it run good.

It's not in me just to be okay losing.

And we were losing by inches every week,
and we decided to do an upgrade.

When you do upgrades, typically, every
time I've done one, there's always a

minor setback.

But I think, you know, if we play our
cards right and we hit the tune -up

we got a shot at it. But we got to make
a good pass out running.

And that's going to be tough in this
air. So not only did we do an upgrade

changes the fuel drastically, we're in
air that changes the fuel drastically.

we got our work cut out for us for a
tune -up.

From where this thing come from last
night, y 'all wouldn't even be, you

couldn't imagine even running today. I
mean, it was literally a bare block in

the car, 5 a .m. this morning.

We're not going to be able to race.

The strongest guy on the crew can't even

I just wanted to do it on TV. I wanted
to be the one to get it.

So far with the car, we've been doing
really good. The car's made almost every

single run except for the last run
against Damon Merchant a couple weeks

We changed the front springs. We wanted
to try something there because we were

having the front end was bottoming out
on the top end and upsetting the car

through the light.

We've changed the tires, see if that can
pick us up. Hopefully that gives us

that little bit of an edge there.

You guys I'm hearing, they're changing
this, changing their converter,

their converter, trying more rear gear.

We're going to leave it the same.

So let's see if that plays out, the
smart move, right?

Either we're going to not be fast, or
they're going to be faster than us, and

we've lost a bunch, or we're smart, and
they've, yeah.

We've already known. We made one change.
We changed the spring last weekend, and

the car didn't make it. First run in 30
runs.

And all we did was change the spring.
Now we're changing the tires, changing

springs back.

I mean, everything we do on this car is
a gamble.

So out here, the altitude is like 2
,500, but corrected is probably going to

4 ,500, which affects performance on
these cars, brings the horsepower way

But it brings everybody down. So it's
really who compensates the most or the

best for it and whatever changes anybody
decides to do. As of right now, we're

going to try to just leave our
combination alone that we know works.

We made some adjustments to the car. I
threw a bunch of power right off the

which I normally don't have to do. Put a
little bit more on the launch chip.

Made a great run to the finish line.

it. We finally found it.

Tonight was huge on that first run. Now
we'll have some data to base everything

on, look at the fuel -air -fuel ratio,
make some adjustments, and we need this

win tonight.

But, hey, you've done a killer job.

Okay. It's the first race of the Western
Swing.

All year, none of us looked forward to
coming away out here. Some beautiful

scenery, some nice racetracks, but our
engines hate this air. It's the

country you'll see, but the air sucks
over here. The elevation's high.

Where I live is sea level, which means
zero.

Where they live is like 5 ,600 feet, so
it's way higher than we're used to

being.

Old Jingalang's going to have some
trouble breathing, but I think she's

got enough to get past these boys.

How many more gallons of fuel will we
use if we make a full pass?

Oh, you'll be fine. Okay.

This is our first time out west with a
blower. You know, we always came out

with a nitrous car. I had that figured
out pretty good. I mean, I could almost

go just as fast out here as I could on
the east coast. On a nitrous car, you

make your own atmosphere inside the
motor. On a blower car...

All you can do is suck in whatever air
you've got. So it's going to be a little

learning curve. Luckily, I've got Jeff
and Adam here, so I'm not going to have

to learn much. They can go to
transgrade, asking questions while

my car fat.

We are in Boise, Idaho. This is as close

to home track as I can get. We're about
nine hours from here.

We're feeling good. The elevation here
is really similar to at home.

We've been used to racing on the East
Coast where you're below sea level. So

this is going to be a lot to get through
for a lot of guys. I feel we got an

advantage because we're from up here. We
got a good race car. The track's a

little sketchy.

But other than that, we'll get through
that.

Next pair, Nate Saylor going up against
Kai Kelly.

Kai currently leading.

In the grade 8 points, this points
championship for Friday night, $100 ,000

the driver with the most points at the
end of the season.

A drag race there, but Kai Kelly turns
on that wind light side by side.

Me and Nate take off. He beats me on a
tree a little bit.

Old Jingling rocks back, picks up them
front tires, and goes driving away from

me. I beat him by about a car on the
other end. He ain't no slouch. He made a

hell of a pass. He just made a better
one.

Did Kai beat you?

Yeah, he was close.

But he got me.

He's fast.

I left on him.

And it was side -by -side. It's probably
the best race we've had. And the last

one was close that we had. I mean, him
and I are door -to -door.

It's really hard to gain points when I
lose.

That was a good race, though. Yeah, it
was.

Did you have one pass your paint?

Yeah. I won it.

Kai Kelly is the points leader right
now. So for us to be door -to -door with

him is something that's an achievement
for us anyway.

We got a hot rod.

I got a good crew. We got a fast car. We
got good parts in it. And we make solid

runs. Unfortunately, he got the win.

We're done for tonight, but we're going
to come back strong for tomorrow.

We are in the grade 8 sign, which I'm
super thankful for. It is a huge

accomplishment. However, we are getting
to be like do or die time at this time.

The points are spreading.

We're not up here. We're more down here.
And we need to do our very best to

accumulate some points and get closer to
that 1, 2, 3 spot today. Tulsa was an

absolute train wreck.

We got out of our groove. We kind of...

Just lost control of our program and
what we do.

And Chase and I had a talk this week. We
are back to routine execution, doing

what we know best.

The little engine that could is back in.
The MH6 is in, which we're familiar

with. We've won a lot of rounds. We've
done a lot of digging with this motor.

we're just going to go back to square
one, just like how we started off the

season.

We're getting transmission broke.

Never went out of first.

Damn, that was rough.

Backed up. Everything was fine. And then
it started idling real high.

And as a driver, you just kind of know
something's off.

So I knew that it was going to be kind
of a Hail Mary, if you will, and

luck if it went down.

But it did exactly what I anticipated.
It fell on its face with the let go of

the button. We're just having a really
rough time here the last couple races.

Coming over to you. This is the first
time I ever won a freaking grade 8.

What happened?

Something must have happened. It broke.
The transmission broke at the let go.

Oh.

I knew something because I said normally
she's like right there with me. There's

no... I was just looking forward to,
like, racing. Yeah. Like, to see where

were together.

And now that you've got your stuff
trained up. I know. That would have been

nice kind of.

A boost line broke, so that
automatically creates a vacuum leak,

the idle to go up and idle super high.
And then when you let go of the button,

it just literally has no boost. And if
you know how ProCharger works, you have

to have boost in order to make power.
And we had no boost, so we had no power.

We'll get it fixed here, pick up our
pouty faces, go make a test pass, and

to prepare for tomorrow.

Yeah, we got stuff too.

If you need anything. Okay.

I don't blame you. I hate losing like
that. You want a good race? I know. I

want a good race.

It's broken two places.

Yeah, like this far away from each
other. It's back here and it's back

I mean, as long as the bag goes, it just
eats up, so.

All that stuff, I don't carry none of
that stuff.

So these things are ran off the crank.

This hub hooks up to your crank, and
then you put a gear on it and a gear

that runs your blower speed.

The air here is pretty bad. We're down
quite a bit of boost, so we're going to

put more gear to it to spin it harder to
create more boost.

And in turn, while we were changing out
the gear ratio in that, you always

inspect your bearings and stuff just
because of wear and tear.

I found out that one's got two cracks in
it right here and right here.

Once it goes, it goes, and it's
catastrophic failure from there.

So we caught it.

We're debating whether to run it.

Nate, come over and check us out, see
what we were up to.

Lo and behold, he has an F3, which a lot
of people don't run. Everybody runs F4s

usually. He had a plate for one, so all
it contains is the bearings here, plate

that bolts up to the block, and then,
you know, all the magic happens and

it, and that's food. So I'm going to
clean his up. You can tell here he's had

one come apart and been damaged before,
but I'm not going to worry about that.

We're just going to clean it the best we
can.

Butt everything up and roll with it.
Going first round, we're more borrowed

parts here.

This thing will be fast this weekend.
I'm working on it.

Yeah, we're getting it ready.

That's the goal there.

But I choose it.

I know you went out on a limb to listen
to me and keep the small motor in the

car, and you want the big motor, but I
like being the underdog. Like, this

motor's not as big as the MH6, but I
like it. I love this motor.

We beat three sevens last race.

Yes, yes, yes.

So I gave you what you wanted. Yeah. You
gave me what I wanted.

I feel like this one has more in it.

And on this track, it's nearly as good a
track.

Yeah. So we'll be able to manage the
smaller motor better than they can

the big one. Yeah. So it's going to be
an advantage to have a small one right

now. Yeah, it's awesome to drive this
car. Next race, in altitude, you might

having a big motor in it.

With no testing.

We're testing. We're testing grade 8.

So we use grade 8 to test.

Swing for it.

I think that's a good idea.

When I first got into grade 8, and I won
my first ever grade 8, I was still

thinking I wanted to...

When the Invitational Moore fast
-forwarded a race and didn't get into

8, it kind of broke my heart. I was
like, I want to be in Grade 8 more than

thought. To be back in Grade 8 is
awesome because I can build my points. I

I'm around third now in points, so maybe
I can creep back up closer to Kai in

the top.

And you know Kai's talking trash on the
Internet about us.

Is he?

So basically coming from the last race
to here, the air is going to be

different, different altitude.

So the car is going to have a little
less power. So we're going to have to

little more timing, maybe spin the
blower a little more.

The shifts are a little higher.

The RPMs in the engine make a big
difference in all that. So we'll have to

up, I'd say, 200, 300 horsepower.

All right, final pair of this.

Grade 8 first round. Over in the right
lane, that's going to be Axeman going up

against Damon Merchant in the left.

Great drag race, side by side.

Axeman getting the win. Nice job.

I turned loose at trans break. I didn't
see him. 3 .30, I didn't see him. And

all of a sudden, my car pinned me in the
seat even harder. I said, damn, this

thing is riding.

I said, if he comes around me the way
he's running now, he's a bad dude.

Got the finish line, got that light,
going to round two.

Mine didn't go in high gear. I only
raced you in two gears, brother.

I left in high.

Oh, damn.

Damn. The story didn't work.

Everybody was like, who won, who won? We
were looking for the light. I seen him

coming about the 3 .30, and then I
watched him pull, and I was like, that's

over. Okay, well, good job there. Yeah,
good job.

That was the one draw I didn't want was
that car.

All right, here we go. We're going to go
ahead and start our grade eight

semifinals driver's meeting. We started
with eight.

Racers, we're now down to four.

I got bad news. Kai Kelly is still in,
and he's in first place, so he's just

extending. He's gaining points.

You know, we're supposed to knock him
out in the first round, but he is in the

lead in first place, behind nobody.

I like that, man. I'm going to keep
saying it a couple more times. Kai Kelly

behind nobody in the grade eight right
now. Can we start calling me gold medal?

Gold medal. If you win the championship,
Kai, I will stop calling you silver

medal and call you gold medal.

Now, Giuseppe and Axeman, you're in
second. You're tied for second now.

thing was rolling. One of the fastest

passes I ever made in this car.

When I drew my chip, I got left lane.

Or it dropped just a little bit.

But then people told me left lane was
good. So I said, well, shoot, we're

to turn it up, swing it, make it a
little faster, and hopefully take Kai

The weather's great.

Humidity's perfect.

You know, got a little tailwind behind
us.

All right, man. I'm going to run X, man.
I'm going to kick his ass and win the

grade 8 next round.

All right. And then you can get to win,
and then I'll be in the grade 8 next

week, and then we'll be back.

at the corner of my eye at that

injector hat and then watch his light
come on. That was a hard feeling right

there. Oh.

Well, that was a good one. That was a

Man, Brenda was over there trying to

handle me all hard. He come over there
telling my mom, I was running for 5 ,000

dollars.

We'll do it.

To be honest, I get out 12 every time I
lose. Don't care if it's by a mile or an

inch. I just hate it.

is not being humble, I like to try my
best to humble them. So hopefully

Brindle respects my gangster a little
more and he won't be talking with all

bass in his voice.
