knew about, a thing called The Long Hard
Pavement.

Now, he says that he shipped it off to
Dunkirk Press sometime in April 1948.

got it. They never even knew it

existed.

But evidently that's sort of the way he
worked. He was kind of eccentric.

A man used to go off for months at a
time. His own agent didn't even know he

dead or drunk or what. And all of a
sudden, bam, out of the blue, he'd show

with a completed novel.

But one day in 1948, he didn't show up
at all.
