The story of Grizzly Adams is big and
powerful and beautiful.

They call me Mad Jack.

And me and my burro number seven been
traipsing these slopes and valleys for a

long spell. So I know the story from the
beginning. My friend Adams was accused

of a crime he didn't commit.

So he escaped into the mountains,
leaving behind the only life that he

knew.

Now that wilderness out there ain't no
place for a greenhorn.

And his chances of surviving were mighty
slim.

Weren't no time at all, for he was
beaten down, ragged, and nearly starved.

Long about then, he come upon a grizzly
bear cub, all alone and helpless.

Now Adams knew that little critter
couldn't survive without his help, so he

started right down that cliff, risking
his own life.

To save it.

Now that cub took to Adams right off.

And that was when he discovered he had a
special kind of way with animals.

They just come right up to him like he
was a natural part of the wilderness.

But that bear cub, he was extra special.

As he growed, he became the best friend
Adams ever had. And together, they

became a legend.

Now, one of the reasons mountain men
like me and Adams wouldn't live no place

else on Earth is the friendly solitude
we enjoy.

Being alone, you might say. Now, being
alone ain't the same thing as being

lonely. Why, we got the trees and the
streams and the animals to keep us

company. Of course, that ain't to say we
don't like human company now and again,

if it's the right kind.

Now you take Nekoma's young friend
Tatani.

Now there was a boy that everybody
enjoyed having around, and Ben not the

When an Indian boy gets to be close to
manhood, he has to start learning the

ways of men.

So the old chief gave Nekoma the job of
learning Tatani about life and about

friends. So naturally, Tatani was soon
right at home with Adams and Ben.

Ben was happy to stack all the wood that
Tony was cutting, and Adams knew Nekoma

would be pleased as punch with how the
young brave was taken to his new rolling

knife. But Adams also knew that there
was a time to work and a time to rest.

So, Tony, how about a little rest?

A man must work if he is to eat.

Well, that's true, but not all the time.

Nekoma says hard work makes a strong
man.

Well, Nekoma's right.

But not all in one day.

I will finish the work.

Then I will rest and eat.

Well, you go ahead and finish what
you're doing and I'll finish setting the

table.

Mr. Adams.

I see you aren't the only one that came
to pay us a visit today, Totani.

Easy now, Ben.

You're scaring these little cubs. I know
you're just trying to say hi.

Howdy, Jack.

Now, Adams, we ain't got time for that
till I decide what we're gonna do about

this problem we got. What problem? Well,
Nekoma told me he saw a fella up in

Deer Valley and he had some kind of a
strange new shooting iron and a mean

So naturally, that makes him a bounty
hunter. Well, what else could he be?

Come on over and have some fun. It'll
calm you down. Now, I ain't gonna calm

down, and I ain't gonna move from this
spot till we decide what we're gonna do.

Well, go have us a look.

Mr. Jack.

Nakoma. Look.

Look at that, Joshua.

You don't know what to make of them
cubs.

Are they lost, or are they orphans?

No, Totani. They're neither lost nor
orphans.

Those are Chakotah's young 'uns.

I guess she figured they're old enough
to go off on their own for a spell and

take a look at this big old world of
ours.

But how will they find their way home?

They have no teacher like I have in the
coma.

Yeah, you're right, Totani.

But I think their instincts will lead
them home all right. Adams, we've got

business to take care of.

Totani, how would you like to make sure
these little cubs get home all right?

Meanwhile, Titani was about to get
lesson number one in tracking.

They was talking in crow, of course.

But my friend, I see neither the cubs or
their tracks.

But I only looked away for a second.

A man does not look away from his
responsibilities, even for a second.

Nakoma, I think we've lost them.

Do you think they could be in trouble?

Why do you think that they are in
trouble just because we've lost them for

moment? Because they are small, and the
forest is big.

The forest is their home.

To find them, we'll have to think as
they do.

Jack, a stranger's just a friend we've
never met before, that's all.

Well, this is one stranger we're going
to meet real easy like.

Let's just mosey down there.

That stranger's horse seen and heard
that rattler right off.

But being tied to that tree, there was
nothing he could do but cry out for

With that rattler set to strike, that
poor horse didn't have a chance, unless

someone could separate him from that
rope.

Well, I don't know quite how to thank

This bear's a friend of mine.

Ben, say howdy.

Once again, we thank you, sir.

I mean, this is S. Grant, Captain of the
United States Army, and this here is

Sarge.

You'll be all right. It's a mighty fine
-looking animal you have there. It's one

of the best.

We've already met, Ben. My name's James
Adams.

This is my good friend, Mad Jack, and
number seven.

Jack?

Howdy.

Well, look, you're welcome to my camp,
such as it is.

Thank you, Captain.

I'd like to invite you gentlemen to
share my food, at least I can do.

Well, thank you very much. We have been
walking quite a spell.

What you fixing?

Oh, I got a little bit. Never eaten no
army food yet. It wasn't an insult to my

stomach. Well, to tell you the truth, I
haven't been foraging too well.

I'm not much of a hunter.

Now, growing up in a crow village like
Tatani had, he didn't know the ways of

wild critters, particularly how one type
of critter would act when introducing

himself to another.

So when them cougar cubs said howdy to
the rabbit, well, it was a special kind

of treat for him, especially when them
cubs didn't know what to make of that

stranger they had met.

And vice versa.

Now, Nekoma knew that watching them
little ones play was more fun than a

of monkeys. But he also knew there was
an important lesson in life to be

here. And he was hoping that Tatani
could figure out just what that lesson

Nekoma, watching these cubs is almost as
much fun as working with Ben.

But are you learning anything from what
you see?

I am learning that you can make friends
almost anywhere.

If your heart is set on it.

You know, as a man, even as a boy, I
don't think I've tasted anything as

as this.

of the locations and limits of this

wildlife here.

interest in the animals.

animals.

Horses and mules are a specialty of
mine, but I really don't know that much

about animals in the wilderness.

Anybody that's a friend of the animals
is a friend of ours.

The animals got to drink just like we

You know, Jack, I think you're being a
mite unfriendly to him.

Well, Adams, we don't know a thing about

if you can call that a name.

maybe something even

Number seven don't seem to mind him.

Nekoma was doing more than just tracking
cubs.

He was teaching Tatani the ways of the
wild, explaining to him about the nature

of everything that growed, inviting the
youngster to ask questions.

to express his curiosity.

It weren't much different with them
cougar cubs, this being their first day

in the world, you might say.

Why, them cougar cubs didn't know how
they were supposed to act when they went

-calling, so they just let their
curiosity and playful nature take over.

Of course, cougar cubs coming a -calling
ain't exactly an everyday event, but

left to themselves, animals can
generally...

Figure out a way of getting acquainted.

Don't cubs ever get tired of playing?

Do you think they're going home to their

Whatever that there Ulysses fellow was,
or weren't, he was darn smart.

I never seen a man learn more and faster
about pug marks.

Why, in less than an hour, he could
identify practically every animal that

down to the water to drink.

And it was clear to me that he was in a
big hurry.

But what I couldn't figure out was why.

So that would be, uh...

Four raccoon and three deer?

And one wolf.

Sam, this has been one of the most
informative, one of the most

experiences of my life.

I've been in this forest many times, but
you've really opened my eyes to the

real wonder of it all for the first
time.

Well, you know, it does take some time
to get used to, but... I'll tell you

we're gonna do.

We'll have us some dinner.

First thing come morning, Jack and I'll
take you down to the other waterholes.

That's a good idea.

Well, Captain Grant, I'd sure appreciate
it if you wouldn't use that axe on the

live trees.

There's plenty of dead ones around here
to make firewood.

Would be a shame to ruin all this,
wouldn't it?

little bear cub, he didn't see that bear

settling themselves in for the night,

morning at the last waterhole in the

And thanks to a playful raccoon, he even
found himself a turtle.

While Grant was learning his lesson
about the animals, young Totoni was

about animals, too.

He was learning that cubs was like
children, playful all the time and

curious. He learned, too, that in the
animal's world, there are no enemies.

Now, even though that skunk family was
considerable put out by them two cuckoo

cubs, never once did the skunks resort
to their favorite weapon, you might say.

Yes, sir. To Tony was having every bit
as much fun as them cubs he was a

-following.

What's that one up there?

Well, that's a Chinese elm, Kathy.

We was finished with that there animal
census, but Grant still wanted to learn

more about the wilderness.

Adams identified each tree for him,
explaining how important it was to make

that man didn't cut too many of them
down. And I was delighted to show Grant

different kinds of bark and herbs, the
ones that you could eat and the ones you

couldn't eat.

Well, gentlemen.

You too, Ben. I wish I had instructors
like you at West Point.

Didn't they teach you about the
wilderness at that school? Jack, they

some things, but their point of view was
quite limited.

They were concerned with survival in the
wild, and your concern is with survival

of nature itself.

Well, Jack, I think I'm ready to try one
of your specialties, if you'll trust

me.

Jack, I thought I'd try, uh... How about

That's pretty complicated.

Meanwhile, them two cubs were still
enjoying their romp in the woods.

Now, when they started playing with that
raccoon, it gave Nikoma a chance to

tell Tatani some of the things that he
knew about the animal that looked like a

bandit. He told Tatani that the black
patch around each eye gave the raccoon a

sort of a cunning look.

which rightly fitted his mischievous
nature, and that the raccoon ate just

everything, with berries and fruits
being his special favorites.

Nikoma even explained that if there was
a water supply, why, that ring -tailed

bandit actually washed his food before
he ate it. Nikoma told Totani that the

raccoon family generally had three or
six young 'uns at a time, and when they

cried, they sounded just like little
human babies.

Yep. The townie had learned just as much
about them raccoons as them cubs have.

Well, what's the verdict?

Look, I expect nothing but total candor.

Tastes mighty tasty to me, Captain.

Well, it ain't bad for a greenhorn, but
I think he got a mite too much yarrow in
