And I'm the matriarch
of this family

with three generations here.

three generations?

more than that existing.

So I imagine that view
is a major reason why

you decided to build
this house.

- Yes.

We built this house,
like, 50 years ago.

We started out in Atlanta.

And my husband told me
we were going to the lake

and we were going
to build a house.

The city life
was closing in on us,

and we were going
so he wanted to get away.

- Our family is big.

We have many generations
that come here to celebrate

holidays and special events.

But right here, we're
three generations of women.

And our family is all girls.

We have some boys sprinkled in,
but mostly all girls here.

- We don't have
any little boys.

- We don't have boys.

-We don't knowe
what to do with boys.

- You don't make boys.
- Nope.

- I have two girls myself,
so...

- Do you?
- Yes.

- I have one girl and two
sisters and four nieces.

- And we have nine
Deaf people in our family.

When we do gather,
we have a lot

of people that are Deaf
that read lips,

so we need an open space
facing each other

where they can read lips
and see what we're saying.

- And it looks like you have
a few different zones here.

wheHow does that workips
andfor you as a family?ng.

- And - We're kind ofou have
a feseparated sometimes.re.

But a lot of times, the Deaf
kids end up at the table

or somewhere over there sitting
together because they sign.

- We do separate.
And this one's talking.

And everybody laughs.

You know, they're like,
what's so funny?

- Right.
- It makes it hard.

Y- What does the house,
whmean for you,?

having now three generations?

Y- What does the house,
Celebrated many events here.

Many memories were made here.

- Well, it means everything
because my family

comes here to celebrate.

I get them here.

So we just get together here
for holidays and everything.

Big Christmas tree over there.

This is the family home.

This is the family
gathering place.

- This has always been
where holidays have been,

showers have been,
any kind of celebration.

- You know, you know,n
wwhen you're coming here,

you are going to be surrounded
by people that love you

and care for you
and celebrate you.

So I can't imagine a time where
you didn't want to come here.

- I hope, when I'm gone,
which I won't be here forever,

that they will keep
the house so they'll all

have a place to get together.

- Well, it definitely
has a very specific vibe.

- It looks like it stayed
hathe same this entire time..

- Oh, it has.

Yeah, this room has
stayed the same

except for furniture and...

- Yeah.
- Carpet and--

- Carpet.
You have these tall ceilings.

You have this wood paneling.

- Cedar was the in thing
in the '70s, late '70s.

- This house is definitely
Honey's style.

Vintage is a good word.

- This house is definitely
It's just out of date.

It's stuck in the '70s,
and we just need to get out.

- - So I would imaginetely
that the three of you.

have very different opinions
about what you would

like to see in this space.

Is there anything that you
would like to change?

My mom is very set in her ways

so it takes a lot

As you can tell, nothing
has really changed in here.

That was an anniversary
we were celebrating.

the other character

Well, at least we understand
where you guys gather.

- Yeah, it was a good place
to sit and take pictures.

I couldn't help but notice
this slot machine.

- Yeah, that came
from my mother.

- Growing up, we would
always play it, all the kids.

- You get a nickel.k?

You know, it's supposed
to pay out if you win.

And it never did.

- And so we think that Honey
has rigged the machine.

- What's behind those doors?

- When we were building
the house, they came to me,

and they said, would you like
a coat closet or a bar?

And I said, let them put
their coats on my bed.

I want a bar.

So we have a bar.

- Yeah.

- And that opens up.

- And then this opens up.

- Yeah.
- OK.

- So we can start serving.

- And there's the bartender.

- Wow.

How often do you have
these doors open?

Or is it usually kind of
closed up like this?

- It's closed like that...

- Unless I have a party
or something.

And then I open it up,
and they say, oh.

- That's so much fun.
- That is so much character.

My eye is drawn to--

- That dining room.
- Yeah.

- This is where the
Thanksgiving action happens.

- Well, I see you're keeping
the 1970s kind of theme

How much time do you spend
at this dining room table?

- Not an awful lot.
- Not an awful lot.

- No.
- Well, it doesn't look like

you have adequate seating

for the amount of family
members that you have.

- Well, we do have
two more chairs.

- Uh-huh.

I was just going to ask you,
are you the kind of family

that all finds their way
around one table,

Ior do you often take youru,
plates and find spaces around?

- We do that, but we also put
a table here and extend it.

I mean, we've had it
extended out to here.

- And then maybe the kids'
table is way over there.

- And then another
table over there.

- We talked about hosting
events a lot in this house.

Is there any upcoming
events that you have?

- I recently got engaged.

- What?

It's beautiful.
- Thank you.

- So I would love to have
a bridal shower here,

especially in a new space
that's not '70s themed.

- So - That's right. have
It'll be a brand-new space.

- Maybe there will be
a baby shower after that.

- Oh, you sound like

- You guys have a lot
of fun together.

- Always going at it.

- Do you all play certain roles
in that sort of relationship?

- We're all the boss.

to be our challenge.

is trying to get a sense of
what it is that everybody needs

and how everybody's needs
are all kind of different.

- What's been
your biggest challenge

with changing the décor
as the decades have moved on?

- Oh, I don't know.

It was just overwhelming.

My style in my house
is sort of monochromatic.

But it is peaceful
and soft to me.

I like the layout in the house.

We need Luke and Olivia's
help here because I'm not

a design person.

And so we need
someone else's opinion

- We probably also need
a referee for the three of us

because we're not

- My biggest fear
of the house being renovated

is someone else
is coming in

and putting a lot
of their ideas.

How am I going
to accept that

and how that's going
to change the feelings

I have for a house
which I dearly love?

- I was the one that wanted
to reach out to Luke and Olivia

I have for a house

And I feel a lot of pressure
because if Honey

doesn't like it,
then I don't think she's

going to like me very much.

- I'd come after you.
- I'm a little nervous.

- This is the moment when we
kick you out of your own house.

- This renovation means a lot
to all of us, especially me,

because I've been here
- for so longes.

and it's been the same
thing for so long.

- I was really excited to see
how excited they were

to even look
at our family pictures.

- They are putting themselves
into our family

to be able to have
the vision that we have,

which is to bring
everybody together

and let us continue
to make memories.

- I'm just a little
concerned that some

of the original charm
and personal touches

that my mom and dad put in
this house will be erased,

so we kind of want to hold on
to some of that.

- I think I'm more excited
to see the changes.

I'm most concerned
of losing control.

- Olivia, I was so excited
to come to this house

because it is
the first time we've worked

on a project where
the house is sitting on a lake.

- I know.
It's beautiful.

- It literally has
this incredible view.

But when I went into the house
for the first time,

it didn't really have
a conversation with the lake.

It kind of felt like
a house in the '70s.

- It is a house
from the '70s...

- It is a house from the '70s.

- That hasn't been
touched since.

- Yeah, so we have three
different generation of women.

They've all kind of
grown up here,

along with their
extra large extended family,

some of whom are Deaf.

So right now, Honey's home
extis a bit out of date,ily,

so we need to create a fresh,
cohesive space for everyone

so that they'll all want to
come back in the years to come.

So we're going to focus on
the family room

and the dining room.

So w- I don't know hows on
I'm going to be able to make

all of them happy.

- Yeah.
- So we're in the family room.

- There's two
very 1970s things that

are happening in this space.

It's that cedar planking.

- How does painting
the cedar walls make you feel?

- You know what?
It actually makes me feel OK.

- Ho- Does it?nting
the ce- It really does.u feel?

I think a paint would
actually really go a long way

to change the space.

- It would really
transform that room.

- Mm-hmm.

The other really 1970s
feature in that room is

that stone
or faux stone hearth.

- It's not just the hearth.
It's the entire wall.

- And we saw all
those pictures of them

sitting in front of that
over all the years,

so it's definitely
a focal point.

- My objective is
to lighten up that fireplace.

- Gotcha.
- It's so visually heavy.

- Yeah, it doesn't feel
tolike it gets the sunlight,.

doesn't get
the brightness it deserves.

With that in mind,
I want to use the opening

in the stone wall to display

some of Honey's
amazing knickknacks.

And instead of hiding
the bar in the cupboard,

I want to show it off,
brighten up the space.

- It is very clear this family
needs so much more seating,

I so we'll add a lotf,
brof new furniture,ce.

- Itpulling all the bluesamily
needs soand greens seating,

and earth tones
from that gorgeous lake.

- And the layout
of this furniture,

it needs to be open
and inclusive

so everyone can see each other
and communicate better.

- Plus, I'd really love to put
a bench near the fireplace

sowith some special seatingher
for all the kids and grandkids.

- That all sounds great.

I have one last thing
for the family room.

We had so much fun
with that slot machine.

- I love the slot machine.

- No matter what we do,
we got to give it

a place of prominence
somewhere in this room.

- For sure, Honey has
to keep stealing money

from the grandkids.

- That's right.
She's got her racket.

- It can't go anywhere.

Do you want to talk
about the dining room?

- I think we need
to treat this space

very similarly because
you can see the two together.

- Mm-hmm.

- The original hardwood
floors can stay,
very similarly because
you can see the two together.

but everything else is dated,
and it has to go.
- Mm-hmm.

I'm thinking of a bigger dining
table with much more seating
very similarly because
you can see the two together.

so the whole family can sit
together comfortably.

And we can add a fun rug
for a pop of color.

And I would love to replace
that light fixture

with something more modern.

And the walls definitely need
a fresh coat of paint.

- Part of what makes
design fun for us

is doing things that connect
exactly to their feelings

and who they are.

So whatever we put up
on the walls,

it's got to have
meaning for them.

- I agree.

That gives you
a lot of opportunity

to do some sort of woodworking
project, perhaps.

That gives you
a lot o- Hmm.rtunity

OK, bringing the lake
inside will make it

a little fresher, a little bit
more connected to the outdoors.

OKBut I really wantke
to talk to the ladies,

get a little bit
more information

about what they're into,
to what they like,ies,

and what their tastes are.

- I don't think Honey is
going to have any problem

telling us what she wants.

I definitely need
to hear more from them.

I have an idea
about what I want,

but what they want,
that's a whole nother story.

- That's always
the balance, right?

- That's right.

- This house is
our toughest project yet.

Nancy and Lauren
want to see some much-needed

updates to the house.

But this is still Honey's home,

and she is really
reluctant to change.

We only have a few days
to get this renovation done.

But Olivia and I have
to get the three generations

together again.

We can see there's still
disagreement between them,

and we are desperate
to find common ground.

It's time to put pen to paper.

It is the only way we are going
to get this design just right.

with their design.

Well, that was
really interesting.

to be around for a long time.

all three ladies want

a more modern feel

so we've decided to paint
the cedar paneling

a really pretty soft blue.

Now, listen, it's a big risk,

but it'll give them
the fresh, bold change

that they all asked for.

I also have a lot to think
about with this fireplace.

I mean, it's in desperate need
of a makeover.

I really want to preserve
an organic feel

since we're right by the lake.

But I'm concerned that between
the new blue paint on the walls

and the more modern fireplace,

Buthat it'll just be too muchn
tof a drastic change for Honey.

- While the house
is getting painted,

I can start

After meeting at the lake,
Nancy told me

about an old cedar chest

that had been gathering dust
in the garage for decades.

I love an opportunity
to repurpose something old

and build something new
with it.

It's a beautiful piece.
I don't know, maybe 1930s.

An old cedar closet.

She said that we could do
what we want with it.

So I was thinking
about the bar.
An old cedar closet.

We know how important
that bar was to Honey.
She said that we could do
what we want with it.

She had to choose
whether or not she was going

to have a closet or a bar,

and she definitely
wanted a bar.

So we can maybe use
some of this cedar

to kind of dress it up
a bit and call back

to the cedar
that used to be on all

the walls in the main space.
- Yeah, I like it.

- Now, we're just going to have
to be careful taking this apart

because cedar is soft.

- Now, we'r- It is.oing to have
- And this wood is old and dry.

I think we can just pop
this top piece right off

and try our best to not
damage the soft wood.

It's always bittersweet

and ttaking apartto not
somebody else's work,

but the truth was, this was
just gathering dust,

and I believe that the wood

still has
a whole new life in it.

See, even that, we can
bang out those nails.

There's something there
we could do with that.

I'm not sure yet.

Other question
is whether or not--

it looks like
the outside was finished.

The inside's kind of
this beautiful unfinished.

- Sometimes my creative process
is a bit of a mystery.

And just taking something apart

might be exactly
the thing you need to do

and wait for inspiration

So, you know, right off
the bat, if you take a look,

we might be able to just use
these panels as they are

to sort of panel
the back of the bar,

kind of give it that old,
warm kind of feeling.

- Yeah, I like that.

- So we'll fit these panels

to mount on the back
of Honey's bar.

Not sure whether
I prefer the inside

or the finished just yet.

But either way,
I'm excited to add

warmth and texture to the bar.

And with the leftover wood,

I'm gonna give it
a fun, personal touch:

a custom bar sign.

So I think,
most importantly, we just

try to preserve these panels
as intact as much as possible.

- OK.

- Look at that.

And then we just got to decide
how we're going to finish this.

Look at the other side.

- Is that more appealing?

- I mean, it helps us
with the straight edge.

The only thing I don't love
about that is the nail holes.

- Mm-hmm.

- And it looks like they picked
the nicer boards for the front.

We got some knots here,
definitely more rustic.

- Mm-hmm.
- My impression of Honey is

As the inside
of the house takes shape,

I want to honor the family's
legacy here by the lake,

as well as in the state
of Georgia,

so I've come up
with a simple idea

to add a bit of character
to the dining room walls.

- Hey, hey.
- Hey, Olivia.

- What are you doing?

- Well, can you tell
what I've made here?

- It looks like
a jigsaw puzzle.

- It looks
like a jigsaw puzzle,

specifically a puzzle piece
of the great state of Georgia.

- Yeah.
That's it.

- Well, this was the idea of
a guest book and an art piece.

We put this up
on the wall somewhere,

and people can sign
their name on it somewhere.

- I like that idea.
- Yeah.

It's like carving your name
into a tree trunk

kind of thing.
- Yeah.

- I mean, I would
love to see this

filled with a bunch of names.

- I think it will be,
given all the generations

that they have now
and more to come.

- All the gatherings they've
ghad here over the years.

- Yeah, now,
are you thinking about

cutting the whole thing out,

or is this the whole
piece itself?

- We could hang it
on the wall sort of like that.

- I mean, we want people
to know what it is

when they come in, right?

- I don't think I want
to put "Georgia" on it.

But I thought it might
be kind of cute

Now, we need to figure out

if it's going to be cut out

- I'm going to use, like,
a French cleat so it's

easy to take off
the wall but it's also

- I'sturdy enough thatke,

it's not going to sort of
slip around.

- So that'll give it some
dimension too, then, right?

- Yeah, probably off the wall

is I want to paint it.

to bring back some
of that cedar finish

that we took away in the
living room, family room, den.

do a little sample

and see what it looks like.

with some new stone.

on how to freshen up
the family focal point.

with these, Olivia.

- Well, remember when
we were down at the lake

and we did that exercise
with Honey, Nancy, and Lauren?

All three of them
said they love

that this home is on the lake.

So we wanted to give them
some sort of art installation

to honor the family
and honor their love

for living on the lake.

And I have these paddles here
with this really cool design

with all of our colors
and thought it would be

fun to put their names on it.

witSo there'll be ones
for Honey, one for Nancy

and her sisters,
and the grandkids.

As Luke is rowing his boat.

feel that energy

So this here behind us is

But we also kind of
thought about this piece

as an opportunity for people

And over the years, the entire
board will get filled up
