are a lot of fun.

- I am Simone.

- I am Erica,
Simone's big sister.

And I love my baby sister.

- We're so different,
but we're so much alike.

At the same time sometimes,

- We were born
and raised in this house

- This was the house you spent
your whole childhood in?

- Absolutely.

- It's so unique,
especially for Georgia.

We were wondering,
y'all can give us

a little bit of backstory

- Absolutely.

It was custom built in 1964.

- OK.

- A lot of people say
that it looks

like a New Orleans style home.

- We were saying that
as we were walking up.

Yeah, someone had a very
strong idea of the way

they wanted it to feel.
- Absolutely.

- Our parents bought it about
10 years after it was built.

- Yep.

We lived in this home
until our parents

ended up getting a divorce.

And they sold it.

After we moved out, it changed
hands a couple of times.

- One day,
I called Erica and said,

I wonder what happened
to the house

over the 25-year time span
that we were away.

She rolled by it,
and saw that an investor had

purchased the house and was
intending to sell the home.

So I said, tell him
I'm going to buy that house.d

- Wow.
- Yep.

- And it was a matter
of three months

from that initial
conversation to closing.

- I can't wait to see it.

- Let's go inside.

Yes, absolutely.

- It's our childhood home.

It's where your core memories
are created.

So we had to get that back
in order to create new ones.

It' - It just needs new lifes
to what once was.

- Mm-hmm. And more personality.
- And more personality.

As if we needed
more personality.

- Mm-hmm. And- Yes.personality.
- And m[laughter]ality.

Let's go.
I'll let Erica lead the way.

Right into the lounge.

So this is a testament to
1970s, kind of like fabulous,

- Absolutely, right.
- Sort of big style.

When you were little girls
playing on this floor,

was it carpet back in the day?

- It was white carpet
on this floor.

- Oh, boy.

- That is risky--

- Yeah.

Growing up, this was the den.

This was our relaxation area.

Our mom would entertain
Growi all of her friends.den.

The fireplace was our stage,
so we would lip sync,

anything from rap to R&B.

- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- I will put on a show.

- [chuckles]

- And father played the piano,
right in that corner.

- Did he have a song that
you all remember him playing?

- It was all gospel.

- But he would jazz it up.
you all rem- Yeah.im playing?

He had maybe some other
influences, a little Motown,

a little blues that would--

- Yeah, absolutely.

- I'm a daddy's girl.

When we were kids,
it's very lovey-dovey

to know that
your father is there

and to support you,
and be proud of you

and actually voice it.

It's important.

- My daddy is
a real-life superhero.

I love my daddy.
It- [chuckles].

- We have so many fond memories
of living in this home.

- I especially
loved the holidays.

- It was family.
It was love.

It was just a time for us
all to be together..

- So it was like
a happy childhood.

It was very playful.

It was spending time together
with the family a lot,

so very positive memories,
so much so that

you decided that you wanted
to purchase the house.

And now it's an opportunity
to keep it in the family

and create new memories.

- Is there sort of like
redefining the memories?

Because some of the stuff--
- Absolutely.

- The final years here weren't,
you know, warm and fuzzy.

Our parents split.

So it was a closure
that we didn't quite

get to have fully,
and so just to be able to say

Sowe're back homere
and put it back together.

We just want
to create a space

that lends to us being
able to congregate

with family and friends.

- So a space that people
can share and be together

is a big part of it.

- But this needs completion.

I have so many projects
going on in the house

and made some poor decisions.

- Tell me a little bit
about this arch.

- Well, I haven't
finished it yet.

It was a DIY project.

I wanted to make some type
of entryway into the lounge,

and just add a little character
instead of having

so many straight lines
in the house.

When I saw it,
it was a little crooked.

So I said,
maybe I just need to stop.

- Step back for a second.
- Yeah.

- Because we also
have some lumps.

- Yeah, lots of lumps.
[laughter]

- It was a very ambitious,
dare I say, botched project.

Not many people would take
that one on, so A for effort.

- I respect that.
- Right. Thank you.

I am a DIY scatterbrain.

You see one project,
you start it.

Sometimes it gets hard, so you
have to take a break from it.

And then you see something
else, you're like, well,

Somemaybe I'll start there you
have toin the meantime.om it.

And- There's somethinghing
elsehappening here.well,

- It is another one of my
infamous unfinished projects.

- OK.

- There's a little bit of work
that needs to be done here.

- Just a little bit.

- The floors were
actually done.

And then it was
a little flood down here

and water came down
from the chimney.

And so we had to rip them up.

- There used to be

- It's a great focal point.

So we have to think about
what we can put in here.

of projects you've started.

- I love unique pieces.

- How would you
describe your style?

Because it gives me
retro vibes.

- I would say eclectic.

I love blues and greens.

- So colors that really pop.

- And functionality.

- Yeah, we want to live in it.

I don't imagine having a room
that we can't go in or touch.

- I was looking for this
to be a conversation area.

Design style, I would consider

to be our family home.

- So how did y'all
use the space?

- The cooking would
happen over this way.

- Yep, a huge awning
was on the back.

- Lots of trees.

My mom, she was
big on flower beds.

- She did gardening.
- Yep.

- Mom had a green thumb.
bShe loved florals.

And you know what?

I think greenery
represents life.

- Yes.

- So she would love it
if we added a touch of color

and a touch of life
to the backyard.

- And then there was
artificial grass down here.

So even if we weren't
in the pool, we would lounge.

- Right now,
I see two opportunities

for people to sit down.
- That's about it.

- And I noticed that the pool
equipment is on full display.

- Full display
for everyone to see.

- And also, I don't know
if it was always this way,

but you got a straight shot
into your neighbor's bedroom.

- It was none of that.
No, no, no.

There was none of that.

- There was a fence
and lots of trees.

- One thing we do need
to bring back is some shade.

- Oh, yes.
- Because this is Georgia.

We're in the South.
The summer gets hot.

- The heat does not let up.

- I would imagine this
concrete gets hot.

- The hea- It does. let up.

- The good news is, like,
much like the downstairs,

the basement--
blank, clean space.

- That's a good way to put it.

- Whatever we do,
we want you to know.

that we're going to take care.

of this place
like it's our own.

takes a load off my sister

with all of the projects
that she had taken on.

repurchased a house

that her and her sister
were raised in.

to seeing what we can do

to kind of update the house.

Now that Simone and Erica have
given us a tour of their home,

we've decided
to focus on their lounge

and the backyard pool area.

And the challenge is we need
to create a design

that honors their childhood,
and thbut is updatedl area.

to suit their present needs.

What's your thinking
with this lounge?

What kind of aesthetic
to sare we looking for?eeds.

- With the lounge, I would
love to bring back the '70s.

- Mm.

- It's when
the house was built.

And they love jazz and R&B,

and they spoke so endearingly

about their dad
playing the piano.

And they would stand up
on the hearth and dance.

- That's right.

- So I feel like
we need to give them

a space that has that vibe.
- Yeah.

- And they talk
so much about

this used to be the house
where their parents would

entertain the whole family.
- Yeah.

- I want to bring
that back for them.

- So I'm thinking we add some
kind of funky '70s seating,

maybe some brown velvet
with touches of fur

and some fun tassels.

Anything that speaks to the
period and makes it inviting.

In terms of the color palette
let's lean into green.

I mean, it is
Simone's favorite color.

And maybe we go
darker with it,

and add some mood
to the ceiling too.

- Ooh, addressing the ceiling.

- To really help it
to stand out.

You know it's called
the fifth wall.

People forget about it
all the time,

You know it's called
but it's just as important.

- Interesting you say
that, too, because

that space was so open,
it kind of echoed a lot.

- It did.

- I wonder if adding
something to the ceiling

would also give it kind of a
cozier, chiller kind of vibe.

Let's not forget, we have
that big fireplace wall

that goes across
the entire back.

- Yeah,
we need to do something

to break up all that brick.

- So on either side
of that brick fireplace,

I could build two bookcases,
you know,

just a way to sort of
of add some objects,ace,

personal memories to the space.

- And there is that bar.

- Simone sort of started
some projects,

didn't really finish them off.

That bar was one of them.

We also have to finish off
the flooring, the arch.

It's just sometimes,
a DIY in reality

and what you think you can do
don't always jive.

- Mm-hmm.

- OK, I want to talk about
what's going on at that pool.

- I thought it could be fun to
do some sort of garden oasis.

- Oh, absolutely.

It does feel really exposed.
It feels really open.

So the first thing
I want to do is

give them some kind
of privacy by creating

a living wall of plants.

It makes the space
a little more inviting.

It'd be actually really good
to talk to them specifically

- Oh, that'd be sweet.
- Yeah.

And what about an al fresco
outdoor dining area?

I'm thinking
a large wooden table

with plenty of seating for
the whole family to gather,

a grill station
so they can prepare

some good old
Southern barbeque,

and let's add some outdoor
rugs to really cozy it up

and offer some protection
from that hot cement,

because we both know
it gets so hot out there.

Speaking of which, we need
to add some shade too.

I'm not sure about
that whole awning thing,

but maybe some umbrellas
so they can get together

any time of day.t

It'll really be
an entertaining spot for them

like it was before,
but different.

Can I tell you what
I'm a little nervous about?

Their personalities
are so different.

They both have a strong
connection to this house.

Their personalities

- I'm nervous about being able
to make both of them happy.

- Mm.
- And it's Simone's house.

So I really want to make sure
that it's functional for her,

that she loves the style
-and the aesthetic of it..

But I also want Erica to feel
comfortable coming over,

because it seems like
she spends a lot of time

with her sister.
- Yeah.

- She also has fond memories
she sof the house.f time

- Absolutely.
- We have to figure this out.

- Yeah.

What are you thinking,
design-wise?

- I'm thinking something funky,

tall panels on the end that go
from the hearth to the ceiling.

- Mm-hmm.

- All right.

- And then we have
vertical panels

that run in between
that create these

little asymmetrical cubbies.

And then we can do
something really pretty--

a piece of artwork
or accessory or whatever

right over the fireplace there.

- So as far as material, I'm
thinking of making this out

of veneered plywood,
right maybe a Baltic birchhere.

- or something like that I'm
that will receive some stain.

We want to see the grain.
- Absolutely.

- Because that gives us
that '70s kind of vibe.

- That's right.

I was thinking to do
something reflective--

- [groans]
- --with the shelves

in the front--
what's the struggle?

- I'm sorry.

It's just that mirrors to me--

and I know we're going
for a funky kind of vibe.

- I mean, think '70s.
It's jThink disco ball.to me--

It plays into the design.

It helps to reflect
the accessories

that we're going to
put in here.

The light bounces off.

It gives you a little
razzle-dazzle on this wall.

You're not feeling me there?

- I think of mirrors, and
I think it's a little colder.

I want to create a cozy space.

- But it's fun.
It's flashy.

That's what a '70s lounge is.

It's not cozy.

Like, nobody goes to
a '70s lounge to sip tea.

- [laughs]
OK, that is--.

- You're having cocktails.
- That is a fair point.

OK, how about this?

I promise you,
somewhere in this space,

we will have mirrors.

- Maybe at the bar?

- Oh.
- That'd be kind of fun.

A little backsplash
- action happening?

That would be a perfect place
for my antique mirror.

All right, so that problem
is solved.

- It's also kind of
what I think about

a bar traditionally.

You know, you often see
mirrors behind the bars.

That's a cool idea.

So Simone purchased this bar,
kind of prefabricated thing,

which is nice.

You know, we're looking at
some hardwood doors, red oak.

And we got this
butcher block thing here,

and it's not even finished.

These don't have end panels
on them at all.

- Oh, my goodness.
OK. All right.

- How can we kind of
dress this thing up?

Are we thinking paint?
Are we thinking stain?

- We can stain.
- Mm-hmm.

- But we have
to figure out

what to do with
those end panels,

because those
are not stainable.

So food for thought.
- OK.

- Another thing we could do
is paint this entire base.

Wouldn't have to worry so much
about those being unfinished.

- I feel like the only thing
we are sure of right now

is that we're
putting a mirror here.

- That makes me really happy.
- All right.

I'm going to see how
they're doing outside.

So Brad, I really want to do
something special for Simone.

I mean, they talked about
being around this pool

when they were kids
and that it was

just this great hangout spot.

Right now,
it kind of feels empty.

They got all this pool
equipment and it's visible.

So we want to create a wall
that can hide that equipment,

give them a little bit more
privacy and create interest.

So what I want to do is create
a long wall--about 30 feet.

give them a little bit more
And what I thought we could do

to make this wall
kind of interesting

give them a little bit more
And is add plants to it--ld do

a living wall
kind of situation,

because I want to create
a design that tells a story

about family.
It's our chance

to honor them as we pick
plants and flowers

that reflect
their personalities.

So I'm thinking we give them
five 4x4 posts.

And we're going to run some
ripped boards horizontally

So I'm thinking we give them
all the way up,

building individual planter
boxes of different sizes.

And all these different boxes
will have different varieties

of plants in them.
- OK.

- The other thing that
I want to do for them is,

because there's
this usable space,

let's put a door in here.

But kind of a hidden door
in the wall

so that they can put their
barbecue in there

when they're not using it,
some pool toys back there,

so it's not out there on the
deck for everybody to see.

- It's a great idea.
- Definitely going to be heavy.

So we have to build
this one very well,

very strong, very sturdy.

We're going to put bolts
down into the concrete,

so it's not going
to go anywhere.

- OK.
- Let's get to work.

Now that the living wall
is taking shape,

it's time to turn
my attention to the lounge.

All right, is this
kind of what you were

hoping and dreaming about?
- Yeah, that's it.

That's really going to make
a statement on the ceiling.

You know what it reminds me of?

TBack when I was growing up
a stain my family home,ing.

we had that wood paneling
on the walls because

TBack when I was growing up
ait was built in the '70s..

And that was very indicative
of '70s décor.

And I thought it would be fun
to bring that feeling

back to the house, right?

- Yeah, it's definitely
going to give us

that kind of
funky sort of feeling.

But this is a much more
contemporary, clean,

kind of crisp look.

And the nice thing
about this material is,

if we put it on the ceiling,
it's light enough.

It's not going to pull
everything down.

iAnd it's going to give usg,
some acoustic help as well.

Because this space is so open,
we got these hard surfaces

everywhere,
I think this was actually

originally designed and meant,
weto be acoustic panel,ces

so it knocks off some
of that sort of pingy sound

that we get, you know,
in an empty space.

So how are you thinking
of orientation?

Is it going to run this way
or run this way?

- It's always so much easier
to see it.

- Yeah.

- Ooh.

That already adds so much more
personality to this space.

It helps to elongate the space.

It points your eye toward
this phenomenal new fireplace.

- All right,
so there's that, or--

Well now, that's kind of nice
too, because what it does

is it runs parallel
with the lines in the brick

- Well, you have good taste,
Olivia, because the truth is,

the joists in the ceiling
actually run this way.

- Which would make this easier.

- It just really helps
with the install.

from a design standpoint, too.

But the outdoors?

- Just a little blank.

- And it sounded like there was
so much life there before--

- With your mom's passion,

- I love green.

of the boards are damaged, too.

- They're definitely damaged.

- So it looks like it's
going to be a new floor.

And we can do

Everything on the outside,
the way the water came in

has all been taken care of.

So it's not going
to happen again.

So we're going to
take this out,

even up the floor
as much as we can,

and put in a new floor
for Simone.

add a little bit.

There was discussion of maybe
doing this whole thing in turf,

but that seems like overkill.

- I definitely like it on this

All of our furniture

I'm going to take a moment
to check in with Olivia.

a big puddle of mud right now.

- Do you remember when we were
about to walk up the stairs,

and I noticed that hole on the
wall with that picture light?

and - And I asked Simoneon the

And she said that they
used to have a landscape.

- Yeah.

- And so I thought it would be
fun to recreate that for them.

So it's going to be
a traditional landscape scene,

- Anthrowing back to whatld be
fun they had in the '70s them.

when they lived here, right?

- Hence, this kind
of color palette.

- And also the colors in our
furniture and our accessories.

And what I'm doing now is
just called an underpainting.

So I did a rough sketch.

I shaded in areas where
I wanted to see some shadows,

so I know that I need
darker colors there.

And then once I get that done,
then I'll come back on top

so I know that I need
and do all the details.

- I'm so impressed
you're taking the time

to give them something
truly unique.

I love doing this stuff.

the flooring wasn't finished.

And so we actually found
this new color,

that warm wood color,

This is perfect.

- On the other side,
I know there's

a project that you started.
