but I have a very unusual way of stirring it all up.

How are we? Everybody good?

Okay, good. All right, good, the perfect answer, all right.

My name is Nick, and this is..

- Alicia. - Alicia.

All right, we have Alicia.

We're gonna do a classic of magic for everybody.

This is a classic of magic.

This right here is what they call the cup and balls trick.

Cup, two separate words.

They'll edit that out, but I heard myself when I say it.

Heard myself when I said it is what I meant to say.

Okay, now, this right here is the oldest trick in magic.

It's the oldest trick in the book.

Well, second oldest,

that water to wine thing the one guy did, right?

(audience laughing)

What's his name, Jeff something. He came back recently.

Now normally, you see this game, it's a hustle.

You've seen these before, right?

There's usually one ball, there's three cups.

You move it all around, keep your eye on it,

you've been to a baseball game?

All right, good. It's how you win a hat and a jumbotron.

But the original version did not use three cups.

It only used one, 50/50, very easy to play.

Alicia, you're gonna play this game.

Now the rules are very simple, all you do is guess.

You just have to guess if this ball is under the cup

or if the ball is in my pocket.

Those are the two places it can be, okay?

And I'm gonna show you how this all works

and I'm not gonna do any of the other jokes, you know?

I caught myself on that one.

Now, before we get started, Alicia, just so you know,

this game is not about magic, it's about psychology, okay?

You'll see what I mean. You ready to play?

- I'm ready. - Alicia.

Where's the ball?

- It's in the cup. - Under the cup.

Final answer?

- That's my final answer.

- Of course. Look how nervous she got.

Of course it was under the cup.

Of course it was under the cup, you saw me put it there.

Now I do that to prove that point,

'cause that little nervousness you feel right

before I pick up the cup, that's the psychology part.

That's where I get to win the game.

I'm gonna get you to talk yourself out of it.

And we all understand why, 'cause it looked too easy.

If it looks too simple, you start to second guess yourself.

It's like can't be this easy.

It's like when you find good parking,

it's like, "This ain't a spot.

No way I got this spot."

So you change your mind, I steal your money.

Easier I make it look, harder it is.

Alicia, round two.

Where's the ball?

- It's in your pocket. - Of course,

can't be under the cup.

That'd be impossible.

(audience laughing)

You can change your mind if you want.

- I'm still gonna go with the pocket.

- She understood the assignment.

Give her a round of applause.

There's two for two. She's doing good.

Okay, good. (audience applauding)

All right, fantastic.

All right, now here's what we're gonna do.

Now we're gonna do it again, all right?

I bet some of you still, look, it really is this simple.

All right, really just a ball and a cup.

Other than that, pockets are empty.

You can see, she can see, you can't.

But not like it matters.

All right, I'm gonna do it again,

but I'll get you to change your mind this time.

I am gonna do an extra move, though.

It's this one right here.

Here it comes, you ready?

Alicia, that move right there

is what the kids today call sus.

(audience laughing)

Didn't know if I had the rizz to pull it off.

However, after that sus, suspicious.

I know what it means.

Where's the ball? Let's do it this way.

Is the ball in the cup?

- No. - Of course not, exactly.

Now I did just touch the cup, though,

so I could have done something sneaky.

You can still say cup if you want.

- I'm gonna say pocket.

- Okay, and that's how you lost your money.

I know, exactly, I know, look at that.

Isn't that crazy, I know.

Right, now that's the hustle. That's the one, two, three.

Let the mark win a couple of times,

it builds their confidence.

Third time, triple the bet, knock it on down.

How did I do it? Some of you know how it works.

Some you might have caught me.

The way this works is of course, scam.

It's a complete scam. I have total control the whole time.

All that stuff I said about psychology, hogwash.

You know what I mean?

Yeah, I just turned 40 so..

I never said that word in my life, hogwash. Thank you.

I know, exactly. I say hogwash now.

It means balderdash. (audience laughing)

All right, now you can't guess right

'cause the ball is never under the cup.

The ball was never in the pocket.

You all knew where it was.

That ball of course was in my hand.

That's how the scam works.

It stays here until you guess.

After you guess, I just do whatever I want, right?

So if you would've said cup, I just would've said,

"No, it's over here in the pocket."

You said not cup, so I had to roll it under there

quickly like I did.

Now if you saw me do that, great. If you didn't, magic.

It's a tagline for the whole profession.

But most people look at me funny.

They say that can't be the move.

"He doesn't roll it, I'd have seen it."

But as if to kind of prove my point, no, you didn't.

I know, exactly. Thta's what I said!

That's all right.

Their stunned silence is all I take by the way,

so I don't take applause at all, all right?

So yeah, but that's the thing.

Most people look at me funny right there, right?

'Cause that's the psychology of it, right?

'Cause you were sure that ball just went in that cup,

just like you're sure the ball went in that hand.

Like you know I'm putting it back in this pocket.

That's how you lost even more of your money.

Actually, you know what? Take a look up here.

Okay, now we got it.

I know, exactly. Isn't it crazy?

I know, it's silly, silly, silly.

Now this is the part where someone says,

"Hey Nick, you gotta have more than one ball."

I make the obvious joke, we move along.

However, but you gotta have a bunch of those

to do it that way.

So if I take this, so this is an illusion.

It looks like I'm putting stuff away here,

I always have it in my hand, right?

So you gotta hide a bunch of these in your hand.

Make sure you got a lot of these bad boys,

then you gotta hide 'em all right?

I mean, along with these little oranges,

these little oranges are tough too.

I know, these are fun.

You can't really do much else with that.

I know it's a lot of fun.

But also in the end of it all,

that's how you always end up with this part,

when you end up like all those oranges,

that's how you end up with all of it, I know, exactly.

Isn't it fun? What can we do here?

- The instant camera was invented in 1948

and then it peaked in popularity in the 1980s

and then it totally fell off until today.

I was shocked to learn this,

but the instant camera is more popular today,

sells more units today

than at any time since its invention in 1948.

So, I know it's shocking.

So my question was,

why are people so interested today

in this technology of yesterday?

And the reason is nostalgia.

People love the idea that they can take a picture

and get the results instantly

and go back in time with this old technology.

So in a way, this is a portal back in time.

So I've created a card trick using an instant camera

to go back in time.

And we'll use this, this is a sealed,

regulation pack of cards.

You'll notice that it's sealed on all sides in plastic.

And then, under the plastic, there's a sticker

that keeps the cards stuck inside.

Now I want to take a picture of this moment

as the before moment,

the moment that we're gonna travel back to.

So Laura, would you hold up that deck of cards like this?

I'm gonna take your picture

and what's going to happen is it's going to be

a jumping photo.

So I'm gonna count to three and then you'll, I'm kidding.

It's not a jumping photo. (audience laughing)

I saw the blood drain out of your face at that moment.

Here we go.

I just want you to hold it up, 'cause this is the moment

we're gonna go back to, one, two, three.

(camera clicking)

And instantly, we will have a record of this moment.

Now it does take about 90 seconds to develop.

So while we're doing that,

I want you to open this deck of cards up.

So I will help you.

There's a little plastic bag here,

and if we use that,

we can go all the way around like so.

And now that exposes the sticker.

Can you do me a favor and just tear through that sticker?

I'll start it for you right there.

And then you just tear across.

And when you've torn that sticker off,

I want you to take out the cards.

Yeah, go ahead.

And place them face up on the table.

Yeah.

That's good. Excellent.

Now this is what we call new deck order.

This is how they come from the factory.

And by the way, while this photo develops,

I'm gonna tuck it inside the plastic,

so you can keep an eye on it.

It's not fully developed,

and it'll develop better in the dark.

So better put your hand over that.

Yeah, like that. Perfect.

All right.

Laura, this is what we call new deck order.

It's two jokers, then ace through king of hearts.

Ace through king of clubs, king through ace of diamonds,

king through ace of spades.

This is how they come from the factory.

And I'm gonna have you pick a card

to help us go back in time.

So as I go through, you just call stop.

- Stop. - Right here.

This one? Are you sure it's this one right here?

- Yes. - Nine of diamonds.

I'll put it between the eight and the 10 of diamonds.

And I want you to see,

these cards really are in order

and the eight and the 10 have one card between them

and that's the one you chose, the nine of diamonds.

This is important for when we go back in time.

But now we have to go forward in time.

So I'm gonna give the cards a little mix.

This is how you might mix them in a private game of cards.

And of course after the shuffle,

you give them a couple of cuts.

Why don't you, with your other hand, give them a cut?

Yeah.

Ooh, you cut right to your card, the nine of diamonds.

I'll cut it back into the middle there.

That's a bonus trick, ladies and gentlemen.

Not every performance gets that trick.

Okay, so I showed you how they shuffle in a private game.

Let me show you another way to shuffle.

This is how they shuffle in a casino game of cards.

The reason they do this way in a casino

is because the cards are on the table,

you can never see which way is up.

So I showed you the overhand shuffle.

I showed you the casino shuffle.

This was the shuffle I used to use as a kid.

It's just called cutting cards all over the table.

And now the last shuffle, which is the most important.

I'm gonna turn some of these cards up, some down,

some up, some down, some up, some down,

some up, some down, some up, some down.

So they make a true mess of cards.

And in this condition,

I want you to see that they really do go face up

into face down.

In fact, it would be hard to tell

whether your card was up or down, unless you really looked.

We went forward in time. We did three different shuffles.

It is now time to go back in time.

And to do it, we rewind the deck.

(audience laughing)

And if I did that correctly,

all the cards are now face down, except for one

and that's your nine of diamonds.

(audience applauding)

But if we really went back in time,

all of the cards would be back in order.

That's the two jokers, the ace through king of hearts.

Ace through king of clubs, king through ace of diamonds,

king through ace of spades.

And even the one that you picked is still reversed.

That's your nine of diamonds.

But the cards can go back in time,

they can't go back in space.

Which means if we went back to the moment

I took that picture, these cards can't get back in the box.

But if you lift your hand,

this box has gone back in time.

It's now sealed with the plastic on it.

It's sealed with your picture on the inside.

I want you to check that there are no protrusions or holes.

And under the plastic, the little seal,

the sticker that you broke is now sealed again.

And I'm gonna give you this deck of cards

and this box as a souvenir of your trip back in time.

stop me whenever you want.

- Yes. - Yeah, take it

and yeah, I can actually see the card,

but now, please sign your name on the face of the card.

many of you imagine that the magician

But this time, I show you something more different.

See, here's one card in my pocket.

Let me show you. See, is this your signature, right?

some of our magical powers have rubbed off on you a little,

don't you think? - Uh, probably not.

In fact, there's a magician's test, would you like to do it?

- No. But yes, I'll do it, of course.

- Well, yeah. You'll do anything for me, I know.

- Yes, I will. Yes, I will.

- Okay, question one of the test. What is this?

- That is a wooden thing that looks like a guillotine.

- Yeah. Yeah. - It is a guillotine.

- It's a guillotine. It's a magician's test.

Okay, you didn't do so great on that one.

That's okay. - Okay.

- Now this is a little riveted in that place.

A little blade there. Take a look at that.

Make sure it does not move up and down.

- Okay, no, it doesn't.

- No. Take a look at that box.

Make sure there's nothing sneaky in my little box.

- Not that I can tell.

Not that I.. (audience laughing)

- You can even see that when I put it in there,

that blade moves past all three holes.

I mean, we should all be so lucky, right?

(audience laughing)

Now this is the test. - Yes.

- Put your finger through that tiny little hole.

- No. - Yeah, you got to,

that's how we do the test.

- That's a- - You get to pick

whichever finger you want,

whichever finger you want to lose.

I mean, use. (audience laughing)

- The pinky, then. - Pinky finger.

Oh, the most sensitive finger on the human body.

That's fun. - I hope it's not.

- Dean, can you feel that blade

sitting on top of your finger?

- Yes, I can. I can definitely feel that on there.

- Here's how the test works.

If you have magic powers,

that blade will go right through your fingers,

leaving you unharmed.

And if you don't have magic powers,

then we'll deal with that when that happens, okay?

- Okay. - Here we go, you ready?

- Yes. - One, two,

three minutes ago, I was thinking-

- Okay.

- "There's no way Dean's gonna let me do this."

- I hope you don't. - Should I not do it?

- Well, I just, I fear,

but at least I broke that pinky once,

so the end of it doesn't really work that well.

- Well, then it's fine.

(Dean shouting)

Can you see that that blade is now

on the other side of your fingers?

- I can't see anything. - It's all the way off.

It doesn't move up and down.

And your finger is still perfectly attached.

- Looks like some of that magic

has rubbed off on you, well done.

Ladies, we're gonna have a conversation,

a really short conversation about permanence.

You'll understand what I mean in a moment.

Got a couple of things with me.

I've got a little hole punch

that I got from an office supply store

and a deck of playing cards.

Now here's the strange thing,

we're gonna use one card in a little bit.

I'm gonna leave that sitting over here for just a moment.

But I want you guys, oh, actually, you know what?

Do me a favor. Take any card out that you like.

Nope, not that one.

(audience laughing)

But any other. No, not that one.

There we go. That's good.

Now take a look at the card and tell me,

do you like that card or would you like one of the others?

The choice is completely up to you.

- That's okay. - Do me a favor.

Show the audience.

And as a matter of fact, to make things even more permanent,

I'm gonna give you this marker.

You can place a card face up here.

It doesn't matter if I see what it is.

You can do it face up.

And oh, that's my favorite card, the four of clubs.

'Cause it reminds me of bed bugs.

That's a whole other story.

(audience laughing) Do me a favor,

take that marker and I want you to sign your name

right on the face of the card.

That way, in case you see the card again,

you know that it's yours.

Here's the magic. All you have to do is watch.

from one place to another.
