In all the seasons of My Cat from Hell,
I've never done a shelter makeover

before. But we're only open Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday.

So we have three days.

Oh, cat out, cat out.

This thing is completely messed up.

We've got 24 hours.

We can't fix this.

Hi, I'm Christy, and I am the executive
director for a community -based adoption

center called Sante D 'Or. I have
dedicated my life to helping the cats of

D 'Or.

We are a very small nonprofit, and we're
volunteer runs. We run on donations, so

we've never been able to improve our
facility.

Most of our animals come to us in
suboptimal conditions, including Pigpen,

arrived in June of 2015.

Pigpen survived panleukopenia, which is
a virus that killed both of his

brothers.

Although Pigpen survived, he was left
with neurological damage and some

Pigpen is one of a kind. There is no
other. He just has a big open heart. He

so much potential, and in the right
home, he would be the perfect cat.

Many people come to the rescue
specifically to meet him, and

everybody has walked away because they
are turned off by his ailment and his

behavioral issues.

Pigpen plays too rough. He plays too
rough with people. He plays too rough

cats.

Pigpen is the oldest kitten that we have
right now because everybody else has

been adopted.

His behavioral challenges have really
stood in the way of him getting adopted.

I am really hoping that Jackson can help
us work with Pigpen. It would break my

heart if we weren't able to find Pigpen
a home.

Now, you may not be used to seeing me go
to a shelter, but don't forget, this is

how I started my career, working with
shelter cats, trying to improve their

behavior so they can, in turn, get
adopted.

That's why I'm here today at Santé d 'Or
to talk to Christy, who runs this

shelter, and work with Pink Panic Cat,
who definitely needs my help.

I have a very special someone for you to
meet.

Who's my special someone?

Pigpen. Well, cool.

He is a very special guy.

Cool. Let's talk about him.

How old is Pigpen?

He's nine months old.

Nine months. He is.

Really? He walks older.

What if he walked older? He had
panleukopenia.

And both of his brothers passed away
from it.

Panleukopenia or panluke is a virus that
is extremely infectious.

As a matter of fact, 90 to 95 % of all
kittens under the age of two months who

contract this virus die, regardless of
treatment.

Now, the bug is spread through either
direct contact or contact with common

surfaces like bowls and litter boxes and
cages where this bug can live up to a

year or more. If you want to ensure the
safety and physical health of your

kittens, please make sure that they're
up to date on all of their initial

vaccines. He's gorgeous, man. He's
gorgeous. He's just been this ball of

He's got behavioral issues.

He wants to play so hard, and then he
gets a little chompy.

Unfortunately, because he lost his
brother, that's part of the problem.

What happens is that cats raised by
humans from the time they were a couple

old miss out on very valuable
information they would usually get from

and their siblings, like when is a bite
a play bite and when is it a real bite?

My job right now is to push Pigpen's
challenge line to see at what point he

snaps out.

right so that should be common sense but
it's really as unpredictable as christy

I mean, he's not aggressive.

I don't think he has a ton of control.
The more we just exhaust, the better

going to be. Pigpen has problems with
social cues.

He scratches a little too easily. He
bites a little too easily. He gets a

overstimulated. All of these things can
be worked with.

This behavior has to come out.

He needs that ability to stalk, pounce.

I have got to show Christy that the job
is to get Pigpen nice and tired before

potential adopters ever even walk in the
building.

This is a problem that I see played out
in shelter after shelter, where the cats

are not getting enough time outside of
their cage for play and for social

interaction, and I see this affecting
their behavior, their health, and their

adoptability. We've got to get Pigpen
some dedicated playtime outside of his

cage and time for socialization with
other cats and with humans. This must

happen in order for him to get adopted.

So I'm going to give you homework based
on what we've done. Number one, every

morning, hunt, catch, kill, eat, right?

So it's bring him to a pant, let him
simmer down. Bring him to a pant, let

simmer down, and one more time.

Then end it with a meal. Your day ends
that way as well.

It's about get energy out because by the
time potential adopters come over here,

these cats have to be chill.

The other thing I want you to do is work
with a clicker and treat with Pigpen. I

think it's really going to be beneficial
for them. Adopters love it. One of the

things that people want to see as
potential adopters is that cats will

listen to you because nobody wants to
take home an animal that's just going to

go, yeah, whatever, just feed me.

Flickr training gives us that reason to
connect with a cat. Now, what's that?

Now, all I'm doing right now is charging
the clicker. So that means that I go,

see, there's another thief.

See, he's already doing it. He hears the
click, he's like, where's the food?

You do this for about five minutes,
right?

By the end of that five minutes, this
click will mean good things are coming.

Once the clicker's charged up, then
we're going to go into behaviors like a

He's very adoptable, you know.

I'm so glad to hear that. That makes me
so happy because I worry about him. To

know that Jackson feels that Pigpen is
adoption material is such a huge relief,

and it feels awesome, and I'm so excited
for Pigpen's future.

Looking around Santé d 'Or, suddenly I
start thinking about the potential for

this place.

Right now, you walk in this place, and
you're walking into cages, and you're

walking into bars.

That's got to change. I want to create a
new model in sheltering. We need to

have less caging, more sitting around,
interacting, more of a relaxed vibe that

doesn't scream shelter. And these cats
will get adopted in a heartbeat.

This is the place.

This is the perfect location to
demonstrate that model. Hey. Hey. I'm

I have been working for a lot of years
in the shelter system.

I've got my foundation now in place,
Jackson Galaxy Foundation.

Our big move right now is to change the
way people perceive shelters.

I want to start here. We kind of want to
do a shelter makeover.

Good. These guys are a storefront in the
middle of a very busy neighborhood, so

they have the potential to be able to
raise awareness of what shelters can be

a very visible way.

And on top of that, these guys could
really use my help.

Here's the thing, okay?

Know that this comes out of a total
place of love.

I'm going to start sticking it to you
right away. Okay. All right. So.

First of all, if we remove all facets of
something that says we're a shelter,

I'm telling you, like, these guys will
fly out of here.

Anything that feels like a shelter in
the traditional sense, in my book, has

to go. I want to move away from a cage
-type layout to a colony -style layout.

The trend we're seeing in sheltering and
the thing that I yell and scream about

because I came from a cage -only
shelter.

Colony Living gets guys adopted faster.

It showcases them in a way that cages
can't. That's the future of sheltering.

I get we got cats who need to be
separated out.

But the way that the cats are being
showcased, you just don't get that

bonding where the cats are encouraged to
walk around and interact with people.

It's all about...

Watching them be cats in the most
creative way we can and encouraging

interaction. Cat jumps in your lap.
Suddenly there's that subconscious thing

that goes off in your head where you
imagine that cat on your couch.

That's the vibe. We just got to make it
happen.

My concern would just be I don't want to
miss out on the Orangy Memorial wing. I

really want to. What is the Orangy
Memorial wing? Talk to me. What is that?

Orangy was a very special cat who was
with us for quite a long time, and we

him just.

This was his favorite place to hang out
because he could just sunbathe all day.

Yeah, this is a good hang right here.
That's Orangy. That's Orangy. So we've

this really sentimental picture of
Orangy in this space. And one of the few

spots here where a few of the cats are
free to roam. Well, I want to expand out

that free roaming space far beyond the
Orangy Wink. I've been waiting for 20

years to...

have a place like this that we can show
off. Thank you so much.

know that you are really doing the work

the trenches, on ground level.

I'm so excited for our animals. We could
not do this for them. And to have

Jackson step in and do this for our cats
and our volunteers and everybody who

comes to us is... Cats that haven't even
been born yet. Cats that haven't even

been born yet that we're going to help
later this year. It's remarkable. It is

amazing.

there's a ton to accomplish.

I sent Kate some pictures and ideas
after visiting the shelter last weekend

We're going to look at the space
together and do some more in -depth

No curb appeal at all. Right. What's
going on with the bars inside the

That's the thing.

Nothing against these guys. They've done
a lot with a little, but we've got to,

through the shelters, it can be an
inviting place. It can be a destination.

This is perfect.

She's like, first of all, I can't see
anything through there. What is this

place? It's closed.

That was a potential adopter. It's not
inviting at all. From the moment you

at this shelter, you think the place is
a jail.

That's a perception of shelters all over
the world that we have to smash right

now. Just walking this right now, you
feel that sense of...

Being squeezed.

What if I met a cat here that I wanted
to visit?

There's no place for me to sit. Yes,
there's that as well. It looks

I'm worried that if people are going to
adopt, it's going to be that sort of

pity factor. And that's why you take
them home. That's no way to pick an

to spend your life with. I want people
to think of this as a home.

This is a really usable space right
here. So we actually can reclaim a lot

space if we design it well.

Reclaim the space. I like that.

There is a lot of design changes.

There's a lot of concepts to put in
place. And number one is to create curb

appeal. With that awful wall of prison
bars, that's going. And in its place,

we're going to have this colorful wall
and decals in the window just to create

positive first impression.

And really doing a number on that
awning. All of these three banks of

going to be orange here. A combination
of fresh paint and colorful cat graphics

will achieve that inviting bright feel.

So, these cages.

Gotta go. Right now, this shelter has a
cage -based layout. I want to change

that to a colony style instead.

This way, the cats can be free to roam
around, be more social, and of course,

more visible. But at the same time, cats
that may be in the process of receiving

medical attention or working on
behavioral challenges will also have

accommodated with their own space.

Now, in order to do that, we've got to
open up the center of the room. And

going to do that with new caging that's
more space -efficient and that we can

put around the perimeter of the space.

This opens us up to this new custom
seating arrangement that's going to

more human interaction.

Now, this open floor plan, it's the key,
man. It makes it so that we have an

environment that's more social for the
cats and more inviting to the youth. I

really want to do something that changes
the feeling you get right when you walk

in the shelter by installing a colorful
glass wall.

Boom, baby.

implicitly trust her to bring my vision

to life.

bolts here.

I do have one quick thing. We have
adoption hours, and we're only open

Santé d 'Or pulls cats from high -kill
county shelters. They've got to be open

and fully functional for intake.

We've only got three days to complete
this entire makeover. We can't afford

day more because cats' lives depend on
it.

It's the first day of the makeover, and
there's a lot to do.

I got my design team meeting me.

Kate is my design expert, and Brenna is
the expert when it comes to shelter

renovation. Hi.

Hi. How are you?

Good. I want to introduce you guys to
Bren. Brenna's from Greater Good

Organization Rescue Rebuild Program.

Greater Good, through their Rescue
Rebuild Program, has come on board to

us. Believe me, we need all the help we
can get to get this sucker done in three

days. You guys getting ready to work?

I'm ready. Let's do it.

Come on.

First order of business is to clear this
place out so we can prep the walls for

paint.

Ready, I'm just going to start handing
this up to hold that and I'm going to

stack some more on top of you.

This place is insane with activity and
we've got a ton of work ahead of us.

There is a lot happening. The walls need
to be painted.

Got to get those security bars out of
the window.

We have to paint the exteriors so the
awning can be installed.

So what I'm saying is everything,
everything has to be done today to stay

schedule.

How are we doing?

It's natural to think that it would be
better for the cats to be moved outside

the shelter during construction, but I
actually think the opposite is true.

I think it's better for the cats to be
on their home turf in a noisy

that we can try to control as opposed to
being stressed out in a chaotic,

unfamiliar environment that we can't
control.

Believe me, Christy and I are going to
keep our eyes on these cats at all times

to make sure nothing gets out of hand.

This is, I believe, hands down the best
way to control these cats during this

process. What I want to do for each one
of them is do that sort of half towel

here. Just give them the option. If they
want to hang out and see what's going

on, they can.

If they want to just sort of time out
themselves, they can. My solution here

pretty simple.

It's to take the visual stimulation
away.

There might be a lot of sound going on,
but the cats are going to be much more

comfortable and just towel their cage.

That way they're not seeing, thinking,
and hearing things all at the same time.

They can just be down to hearing.

So we've got this wall free. Let's start
the painting.

We've only three days to complete this
entire project. We have to operate like

machine. Oh, we do?

These guys are fine.

Oh! Cat out! Cat out!

Yeah. Every time the door opens and then
there's another door open, I am worried

about every single entrance because
they're my responsibilities.

Let's stop for a minute.

Shut the door. Everybody be cool. Just
like on any makeover, there's always a

lot of variables.

Safety is always my number one priority.

If something were to happen to a cat
during this process, it would undermine

everything that we're trying to do. And,
of course, it would break my heart. So

when I see a cat out, I know we've got
to get him out of harm's way pronto.

So we're going to be using non -toxic,
fume -free paint, and we're going to

Right now, the colors in the shelter are
honestly a bit sterile. We're going to

brighten things up on the inside and
make things more fun and warm and

we're going to make way for the big

Plexi Art and Sleep.

The bars act as kind of a security net
to keep the cats from getting out of the

building, but let's be honest, they send
the wrong message to potential

visitors. Instead, we're going to be
putting up this bright plexiglass wall

that's going to serve the exact same
purpose, but it's going to be way more

inviting than these bars.

This is my own version of a jailbreak.

May I have your attention?

We have barns!

That's right!

Now tonight, we've still got a lot of
work to do. We've got sparks flying.

We've got cats all covered up. We've got
paint going up on the wall. We're one

step closer to the vision fulfilled, but
we've still got a lot more to go. Turn

this guy around.

opportunity to find a forever home

because we didn't get the job done on
schedule.

We have got a lot to do, but we're
definitely going to be here all night

I'm just hoping that everything turns
out the way that Jackson says it will.

Day two of this makeover. There's a lot
left to do and not a lot of time to do

it. Man, the painting is almost all
done.

We made great progress getting rid of
that wall of prison bars and getting

for the art installation to go up.

My original design called for much less
in the way of caging. Just walking this

right now, you feel that sense of being
squeezed.

In the center of the space, instead of a
bunch of cages, we're going to have

this open seating area, and that's
really going to encourage people to

and play with the cat.

First thing we've got to do is get the
cage situation organized because we

do the walls with the shelves and all
that until that's in place. Agreed.

Agreed. So let's decide which ones are
staying and going. Let's get the cages

out. Let's go. Cool.

So today, the existing cages are going
to be replaced by new cages, ones that

don't scream jail.

Plus, all these new cages will help us
to make room for the custom laid out

seating area.

We got a center of the room. Now let's
fill it up. Let's bring in the cages.

We got all these new cages. We're

These new Snyder cages are going to look
fantastic in the space. And opening and

closing, we don't have that clankety
-clank that's going to be happening,

time the door shuts, and there are

spaces for food and litter.

I should be crying over a cage.

But it's so cool.

The cages look amazing. We are so
grateful for Jackson and doing this for

Thanador. It's really overwhelming.

It's like somebody literally pushed that
off the truck.

So a bank of cages was damaged in
shipping, leaving us in a pinch, to say

least. This thing is completely messed
up.

It's all off -center. We got 24 hours.

We can't fix this. This is trash.

I'm looking at a cage right now that
can't be used. It can't be used at all.

A whole bank of damaged cages means
there's 12 cats that won't have a place

the shelter.

Everything today has to go like
clockwork, and this is putting us behind

huge way.

wrong, probably will go wrong.

Santador pulls cats that are on the
euthanasia list at county shelters. They

have to be open for intake. We do not
have time to waste. Cats' lives depend

it. All right, so we got the room
cleared.

We have the center of the space. Now
comes the centerpiece here. Let's go,

on.

Now it's time to install the seating in
the middle of the room, which will

really encourage people to settle in and
play with the cats.

This is good, guys. Perfect.

This is pretty amazing. Look. Look at
the room reclaimed. It's starting.

All right. We've got storage coming in
here, and they're going to go against

this blue wall. We've got storage being
assembled.

Those cutouts for the cats and the
benches are being cut.

At the end of all this, when the seating
is done, the bars are gone,

everything's painted. Cats have got to
live their life in here. There is no

failure here.

So with this makeover well underway, I'm
going to pull Christy aside and check

in on Pigpen's progress.

He survived Pan Luke, and hopefully he's
making the kind of necessary progress

from his behavioral issues that can help
him find a forever home.

How's he doing?

He is like a whole new cat. I'm so proud
of him. That's fantastic.

I mean, he's got a lot of energy right
now, but it's all put in the right

direction. I watch Pigpen today.

He's just a fun -loving teenage cat.
That's all he is. I fully expect him to

I cannot express how much Jackson has
changed Pigpen's future. He has taken

cat and turned him into this amazing
creature who anyone is going to fall

in love with. Now comes the fun part.

There's stuff I want to do in here that
I don't want you to see.

I need to be able to surprise you, so

Getting kicked out of our own rescue is
a really terrifying experience, so we

just have to hope that he pulls this
off.

done is we've got to finish these

platforms. So that means we have to
build all of the climbing things that go

top of us. The biggest thing, though, is
that plexi wall, right? So they started

to frame it, and then the plexi will go
on it. So that should go smoothly once

the frame's up. Besides the glass wall,
it's all about the small details. And

tomorrow, we've got to hand this shelter
back over to the folks who run

Saucador. And if we don't, cats who
could be taken into this place are going

sit at shelters where they could die.

We are really in crunch time.

We kicked butt all night, and I mean all
night long. And that last wall, man, it

was a lot of hard work, but I'm telling
you it was worth the blood and the sweat

and the tears. It was a flurry of
insanity, but I think unless something

wrong, we're going to pull this off.

Thankfully, we were able to get 12 more
