My name is Kirsten. I have a cat named
Gus.

My friend Jenny saved Gus from a kill
shelter.

And I met Gus, and he was very ill at
the time. And Jenny nursed Gus back to

health and asked me to adopt him. I fell
in love with him.

Immediately after getting Gus, I noticed
that there were behavioral issues.

And unfortunately, he doesn't swat, but
he actually uses his teeth.

There's always scars on me. I've got,
like, you know, all these things are

from Gus.

There's some more permanent ones here.

Once when I was laying down, Gus came
out of nowhere and attacked my face and

put a flash in my forehead.

I'm freaked out to get attacked.

When I try to leave the house, Gus will
attack.

He attacked me in bed and bit my
eyeball.

I couldn't sleep for a day.

I'm a professional musician.

For playing music, you have to have your
hands in good shape. It's my

livelihood. If anything happened where
he bit me and it got infected, that

but he's jeopardizing my safety and my
comfort in my own home.

I don't want him to attack me. When he
attacks me, I feel fearful and really

discouraged, like there's nothing I can
do to help him.

To protect myself at night, I've gone
through stages of wearing my glasses to

then when I wake up in the morning too,

put my quilt like over my head.

Wow. This is like a hostage crisis. She
is now quite literally tiptoeing around

her entire life because of Gus.

Has it gotten to the point where you

the house will often trigger an attack.

My mind goes to a couple of different

The other thing is that the action of
her getting ready to go and that up

overstimulates him, and that leads him
to grabbing onto her. I'm doing this on

purpose right now.

I'm trying to overstimulate him, to
watch his body to see if it's going to

out on me, but those normal kind of
stimulations aren't doing the trick.

know if I give him away, someone

Well... When I was, I think I was five,
I convinced my somewhat willing parents

to go to New Orleans after the
devastating Hurricane Katrina hit. And

volunteered at an animal shelter. Oh,
cool. Right on.

And I ended up, at the end of the trip,
bringing Katrina back home.

That's pretty fantastic.

My heart goes out to you guys because
you have given up a ton.

Literally, probably a ton of stuff.

And everyone's looking at you because it
was your doing, huh? Yeah, heart of

gold. He ran into the garage, put on a
toy tool belt, said, we have to help

these people. But how do you say no when
somebody says, I want to go help

people? Well, you could, but you didn't,
which is amazing.

All you've got to know about this family
is what they did to even get this cat

in their life. Just that alone makes me
want to work just that much harder for

them. There really weren't any issues
until about a year ago. A year ago.

So there's a puzzle to reassemble here.

When you guys moved, did it become sort
of an explosive problem at that point?

Yes. More so, yeah. We know that Katrina
only started peeing around the house

only a year ago. That tells me that
there was some sort of event in her life

that led her to this action.

There's no way a cat does what she's
doing after being trained to a litter

to suddenly.

Forget. Something's wrong with her,
right? Something's up. When cats mark

something, they're speaking.

They're saying, I don't trust this
world. So what's the Katrina game plan?

Since we moved in here, what I've been
doing, I lock them up, go in the garage.

I know it's not nice. I just am so
frustrated with her. But she is out with

access to the house during the day.

We have now gotten to the place where
the only place she can be.

disdain. This feels like the last stop.

Families resort to desperate measures
when dealing with a cat who's completely

abandoned the litter box, and these guys
have gone a bit over the deep end.

Katrina is now peeing all over the
house.

And there's a lot of emotional dynamite
present in this room. So I do not want

you ever to have to get to that place
where her life means less to you now

I'm hoping I can help Zegan by showing
him the realities of what Katrina's

through so that he reacts just like he
did as a five -year -old wanting to go

down and help. He's going to have that
reaction to his own cat. That's where

only thing that says a cat lives here is

Katrina does not have that in this
house. They're all piled in a corner in

garage. I want you to think about what
it feels like to be her.

She's missing you guys.

It's not really a home.

That's a home. For a cat to be stripped
of territory, there's no crime worth in

the feline world. She's now going all
over the house in part.

Because the whole house is being shut
off to her.

complete picture of who this cat is

that you can do with him.

Now that we're talking about it, matter
of fact is the order of the day.

My feeling is play energy and aggression
are the same package. And I think

that's what I keep seeing with him. I
just want to be able to prove it. Every

chance I get, I'm trying to push Gus's
challenge line. So I'm getting the kind

of information that I need. And more
importantly, I get to mirror that

information to Kirsten so that she can
start looking at him in a different way.

I'm just going to put myself in harm's
way. If I know Gus, Jackson should be

really careful right now.

There's a hand and there's a toy.

If he was feeling really aggressive, he

reasons I'm not getting beat up by Gus

With Kirsten, her body language is so
defensive, so reflective. She's not in

control of her own reaction that he
misinterprets and bad things happen.

Kirsten's watching me. Now she can
problem solve. Before, she had no idea

she was looking at. So there's a lot to

So much of what's going on here revolves
around your ability to take control.

As long as you don't put the fear into
it, you can't claim this environment.

you are retreating, when you are worried

about what he's doing and you start

Santa Claus is coming to town. So, you
know, having better litter boxes is

to help Katrina. There's no doubt about
it.

They actually don't seem all that upset
about bringing more litter boxes in the

house. That's a step in the right
direction.

This litter box is going to be the best
for Katrina. The Petco design hardly

even looks like a litter box.

There's the hood so that she can have
privacy, and I see the charcoal filter

also on top to catch the odors. I think
that the new fancy litter boxes with the

cover from Petco, it should cut back on
the odor. We are really excited.

All of that is just wonderful. It's
going to help Katrina a lot.

Okay, so that's exciting. Yeah. Now that
we've got a whole bunch of litter

boxes, step two, we're going to put all
these litter boxes out.

Let's do this.

Again, Yannick and I are going around
the house, putting down all these new

litter boxes, filling them up with
litter, and it gives me a chance to

the kids some more about litter box
behavior.

Fill the bottom of this up, let's say
about two inches high. That's all you

need, okay?

So there you go. That's perfect.

The new cat that always smells like pine

And then I want you to take a little bit
of the litter from that other litter

box and just sort of shake it a little
bit because by mixing part of the

actually used litter with the new stuff,
Katrina will smell it, say, hey, cool.

They start to use it. Yeah, there you
go. Now everything's good. All right.

Look at this taking shape in here. I get
to explain what the process is. You can

see that he's picking up that
information. I love that.

Let's talk about the elephant in the
room, which is the room.

There is no way psychologically that you
can walk through this room.

Finally, I feel like I'm getting through
to him when he's realizing, oh, I have

a job here, and it's not just an action.
It's an emotion. I'm seeing that, and

hopefully the things are going to change
around here.

All right, so my last visit was Mikkel
and Jen and Yannick and Zigan and, of

course, Katrina the cat. Really great
stuff last time around, but I got to see

some furniture in this house first and
foremost.

I got to see this family is really
rallying around the cat that they saved

those years ago. Fingers crossed.

My dreams come true. These guys trust
Katrina enough to put furniture in the

living room again. It's a huge step. So,

Things are getting better around here, I
would hope, judging by furniture.

Really? Yes.

Wow. She'd use the litter box every
time.

And that is night and day compared to
before.

Well, for sure.

It's been really nice not to wake up
every morning and go, what did she tag

time? And we're even get a designer in
here and maybe, maybe think about

a rug.

I don't know. One step at a time.

But it's been nice. Yeah.

We're really happy that everything's
worked out well. We're more united.

less friction in the house because I'm
not constantly saying that damn cat.

Now. Wow, this is a big, long one. It's
dark. Where did everyone go? The things

that were here, my reference points are
gone. And water. So much water.

Still, I don't see my home.

Will I ever see it again?

here, right? Well, since the last visit

you were here, I feel totally different.
I think the most beneficial thing was

realizing that the best way to help him
is to give him his space.

Like, that's been such a relief.

Good, because that was a struggle for
you. Yeah.

Kirsten's aha moment was understanding
that Gus was an overstimulation cat.

And when she realized that she could
disengage without sacrificing a loving

relationship, aha.

Gus Gus and I have been doing pretty
well. Now my legs are in place and I

to get it. So I'm going to try to just
lift him up.

This is the moment I've been waiting
for. Listen, there's one thing that

can't fake with me, and that's fear.

there was definitely a lot of fear. She

There isn't one single thing that I'm
seeing from him right now that is

danger. I feel 100 % okay walking away
from this home knowing that Kirsten is

safe and that Gus is happy. You, my
friend, have come a long, long way.
