But I've never met one I couldn't help.

In my career, I've worked with thousands
of cats one -on -one, analyzing their

behaviors and retraining them and their
guardians.

When relationships are at an end, I
don't have many more options than to

leave. And cat guardians have reached
their emotional limit. Just get rid of

her. I'm their last hope.

Are you all right?

Sorry, I don't know. Cats have nine
lives, but humans only have one.

I'm heading over right now to see Debra
and her two cats, Ozzie and Lily. Now,

her two cats are so aggressive with one
another, they and their behavior got

them kicked out of their old house and
kicked into this teeny little studio

apartment where they're driving each
other crazy. So I'm going to go over

right now and see if I can just untangle
this mess.

I'm Debra. I'm Michael.

And we've been friends for 16 years. And
up until just recently, we were

roommates.

I have two cats.

Ozzy and Lily. Ozzy is eight and a half.
Lily is four and a half.

Two years ago, I decided to move back to
California from New York, and I called

Michael up. When I found out Debra was
moving back, I told her, please, yeah,

come stay with me. And so it was a
perfect situation.

So in the beginning, everything was
amazing.

The cast were incredibly happy to be
there. They loved Michael.

They were best, best friends.

And then one night, Ozzy was attacking
Lily.

flipping all over the apartment. I was
terrified.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

We had to keep Ozzie in my room and keep
Lily in her room. Get back, get back,

get back, get back. Ozzie would yell at
Michael's door wanting to get out and

he's got lungs.

It is 3 a .m. and you hear this.

That's Ozzie.

I never in a million years thought I was
going to have to move out because of my

cat. And now I am trapped with two cats
that want to kill each other. I have

gone from a three -bedroom house down to
a studio.

It's a little bit insane right now. That
first night, I had to sleep with Ozzy

in the bathtub to keep him calm.

I'm just going to try to let him out of
the tub and try to get some sleep.

I'm definitely terrified of being a
crazy cat lady.

I'm not going to let him out, baby.

I love my cats.

I need Jackson to come and help me out.

It's very important to get this solved
for Deborah's sake.

She needs sleep.

She needs less stress in her life. I'm
worried about her.

In my line of work, what I'm always
trying to prevent is people being split

apart and being forced to move because
of their cats.

So this case represents one of my worst
fears come true. I got my work cut out

for me, both in human terms and in cat
terms.

Ozzie and Lily used to be best friends
until a few months ago.

I got home really late from work one
night. Ozzie was insane going after

traumatized cat can't lash out at

making them crazy in the first place,
they're going to turn that aggression

an innocent bystander. In this case,

From living in a three -bedroom house,

Michael. Michael. In a studio apartment
with the cats who are still, I assume,

fighting? Yeah. Lulu's developing bald
spots. She's either chewing or over

-grooming, so it breaks my heart. Okay.
Now...

Another challenge that I feel right now
is that I don't feel that Michael is

part of the conversation.

Yeah. Is it okay if I talk to him? I
would love that, and I kind of expected

that. So he's going to come over. Oh,
great. He can meet you. Fantastic.

It's going to really help to see that
part that's missing, the partner in the

trench.

Cool. Let's meet Mike. You want to hear
a story from a witness to say, this is

what concerned me.

As her friend of 16 years, I think I
know the whole story. What I want to

The bulk of the breaking point for me
was I was worried about Deborah.

She was not getting any sleep. She was
stressed out of her mind.

There's also a third roommate.

And so I think more of the stress and
the friction was really... Was being

it. The other thing that I have to ask

in this process is I need your

This is where Ozzy lives now. I had this

I did this in order to keep these two

Bitty space here. Poor Ozzy. I mean,
that is not a space big enough for a

Ozzy sees Lily, he just goes right for

The biggest problem in this small space
is that there's not many places for Lily

to go to hide. So she made a bad choice,
which was to try to make herself as

small as possible in this chair.

She just started to make some noise.

There's another challenge line with Lily
that I think is really important, and

that's the environmental challenge line.
Just start looking at things in terms

of the cat superhighway, right? And on a
cat superhighway, there are no dead

ends. We can catify the studio and give
them more levels to get around, build

that superhighway to keep them away from
each other. I can make this work.

Every time they eat, I'm going to have
you establish that challenge line on

either side of the door. Start far away,
with a curtain, slowly, as these guys

eat and walk away.

Every meal, just a little bit more, a
little bit more.

We've got to get him out of there.

Yeah. He can't live in there.

So now we're going to deal with the
concept of sight -swapping.

That means on different days, she goes
in there, he comes out here. Okay? No

biggie. We're going to fight really hard
for this.

If we decide together that...

For the sake of everyone's health and
well -being and sanity, this is not a

thing. Then we have to start thinking
about where one of these guys can live

that's not here. Just because two cats
got along at one point does not mean

they're ever going to get together
again. For the greater good, we may have

rehome one of these cats.

Deborah, Ozzie, and Lily. Now, the

situation had gotten so bad that it
forced Deborah to move out of her old

she didn't have the feeling anymore, so
she didn't have to do the action.

So that's great, but Ozzy is still wound
up, and so he's yelling

He is a very squeaky wheel. He's very
squeaky. Well, it's great that Lily's

improving. It's not going to last long
if we can't get Ozzie under control. So

that has to be a priority.

Now, we've got some video footage here
of the homework that you were doing. So

Hey, girl, we're just going to have you
eat right here. I got to see salmon

Feeding them at 5 '6 today, Lily would
look at Ozzie. We also saw the feeding

ritual itself, which was great, because
food source is probably the most

important thing in a cat's life. We're
going to find the balance of their

relationship around food.

I did see Debra playing with both cats
with her friend Michael's help. And

everything that I saw in that video was
great except for one thing.

Ozzie is still in the kitchen trying to
play from his tree perch, and this ain't

going to cut it. All right. The thing
is, you can't play with him in there.

That's why you're having the problems
that you're having. You're never going

poop him out in there. One of the most
important things about a cat like Ozzie

is he's high energy.

If you don't choose where to channel it,
it's going to wind up on Lily. So let's

start taking a look around, huh? Okay.

So I put in some shelves for Lily.

Hey, Matt, this is the superhighway.
It's the superhighway. You totally have

concept down pat.

But she doesn't really want to use that
side yet because of you -know -who.

Debra put shelves in the closet after
the last time I was here, and that's

great. But I want to see Lily going up

front of the kitchen, a .k .a. Ozzy's
lair. Now that would be huge. This is

really important because she's got to
know.

One of the greatest parts of today.

was seeing Lily go bang, bang, bang, get

I'm telling you, my mouth fell open.
Lily was feeling secure and full of self

-esteem, so I'm really happy. So this
level of our equation is so set right

So I want to get Ozzy out here, and
we're going to be relaxed about this.

Let's make it happen. I am a little bit
nervous now that I've boosted Lily up a

little bit because I don't want to push
her too far so that she backslides.

Since the last time I was here, Debra
hasn't let Ozzy out, so for him to want

Yeah. Sight swapping every day. It's
more important getting Ozzy to start

actually playing out here, getting his
energy out. The cats have to own

different parts of the world in order
for all of us to own it at the end of

day. When Ozzy starts meowing like
crazy, you can't reinforce that squeaky

wheel. Wait for a 10 count of silence
and reward that. Also, you're going to

start feeding in full view. Full view,
no curtain, no sight blocker. Exactly. I

want to see this feeding ritual work.

Raise the curtain, move it up. When we
get to that place, Let's use something

else. You're going to put this in the
door, cut a piece right out of here, and

then you're going to use this dish.

One is going to be on one side, one's
going to be on the other. When I come

here next time, I want to see them
eating out of that dish just with the

of a little bit of poster board, and
then I think we're home free.

other space so they can get used to each

other's scent.

Awesome.

Now we have Ozzie out in the main room
playing. Good girl, Lil.

While Lily's in the kitchen chilling.
When you get 10 seconds of quiet, we'll

set down the food dishes simultaneously.

Kind of miraculous, right? Also, Debra's
friend and old roommate, Michael,

continues to come over to help. Now,
this is all great stuff, but I still

haven't seen the long dish feeding
exercise.

This time, that's my goal. I want to see
these guys share this teeny little

studio apartment.

We put the dish down with the sight

Everything's set up, and the scary part
for Debra, and a little bit for me, is

that the screen door is open through
this entire process.

going on over there? She's about to walk

over my lap with any luck. She's very

We were so close, but Lily smelled Ozzy

Now, she's seen a lot in the shape of a

Allie is just beating on her all the
time. We can't have that. I mean, as she

gets older, we've got lots of health
problems that can come along with being

scratched and bit. So I'm going over
right now to see what I can do to help

I'm Pam.

And I'm Callie. And I'm 95 years old.

And Pam is my oldest daughter.

I don't think until the last few years
Mom was an animal person. She's more of

an animal tolerator.

Never expected to have a cat, but I like
the one I've got.

This little bitty kitten was crying
pitifully in the backyard. I brought it

the house. I bottle fed her. I expected
that I would keep her until

I could have her neutered.

I just opened the door and said goodbye,
and she didn't go anyplace. She just

stayed.

Allie's about three years old now.

She's a wild cat.

She's a dangerous cat.

My mom's got very thin, thin skin, and
so sometimes when the cat scratches her,

like the skin comes off.

And her doctor actually said to get rid
of that cat.

My husband died 12 years ago, and I do
live alone, and I am attached to Allie.

It's nice just to have some
companionship in the house.

I am not giving Allie up.

I want my mom to have a companion, but I

attacking her.

I lived through World War II, but I'm
terrified of my cat.

Callie got a cat because she wants a
companion. Of course, there's nothing

with that, but we have to make sure that
she's a safe companion.

At 95 years old, Callie doesn't need
someone who's going to attack her.

Well, I have a cat, and she bites and
scratches.

She's a feral cat, and we can't pick her
up at all. I don't even remember how we

managed to get her to the vet to get her
spayed.

But since then, she hasn't been back to
the vet. She hasn't had shots.

Now, see, now that.

And then Allie goes outside where there
are other cats, and she has been in cat

bites. This cat hasn't been to the vet
since she was a kitten, and that means

she could be carrying dangerous
diseases, and every time she attacks Pam

Callie just can't afford the infection
from a cat bite at her age.

What I really want to do is take a look
around the whole territory here. So if

you guys don't mind walking me around

stop was the dining room, and that just
seems to be the hub of all bad behavior.

She'll be sitting under the table, and
if we walk by on the way to the kitchen

or to go outside, she'll just rush right
out. I have proof, if you'd like to see

it, from my most recent attack, which
happened right over there.

Oh, wow.

And I'm seeing this claw.

And that is deep. Wow.

Pam showed me that ankle wound, and that
was bad. I mean, that was bites. That

was scratches.

Not a good thing. She does come and go
as she pleases, sort of, in the

might have some really fun ideas to work

with this, because I would like to see
her not exposed to disease, and I'd

really like to make sure that you and

So I've seen this whole house, and I've
yet to see Allie. So that's our next

Suddenly, Allie goes across the room and
into the closet, and she's assuming

some of that quote -unquote feral
behavior. Her ears are flat. Her eyes

dilated. She's breathing shallow. She's
hugging the walls. I mean, this is

exactly what she would do if she was
threatened out in the wild.

I've got my work cut out for me in every
aspect on this one.

Here's the deal, pumpkin. I just want
you out of here.

I know.

When Jackson got really close to her, I
was thinking, oh, my God, what is she

going to do? I was horrified at the
thought of what might happen.

Look at me.

Come on.

I know, I know, you're all worked up,
but you've got to get out of here.

Pumpkin, I just want you out of here.

Ow! Putting your hand near a semi -feral
cat in this state is like putting your

hand in a garbage disposal.

I was terrified.

I've got to get her out of this closet.
I mean, as long as she's in there, she's

going to live in this constant state of
fear, and that's just going to set us

back.

I've dealt with a lot of feral cats over
the years, and it's just patience.

So what I wound up doing was just
backing away. I just wanted Allie to

want.

For a basically feral cat to come out of
hiding versus staying hidden, show

signs of socialization. I mean, she
basically wants to interact with humans.

that is something I can work with.

It's been a long day.

Now, we can't get her to the vet, and
what I want to do is I want to have the

vet come to you.

What? You can find vets that come to
you? Of course. There's house call vets

everywhere. So we can have somebody come
here.

and give her that tip -to -tail checkup.
And what I'd like to get on her is

nylon tips that go on the claws.

I always recommend soft paws on claws as
a humane alternative to declawing. And

my main priority right now is to keep
Callie safe, so I really would feel much

safer if I got these soft paws on Allie
ASAP so that Callie can't get scratched.

I'd like you to take these flags, and
I'd like you to put them wherever this

misbehaved. We have to know where and
why Allie attacks, but at the same time,

we've got to encourage good behavior by
playing with Allie. The three -year -old

cat has very specific exercise needs. If
you're playing with her every day, she

will love you.

Finally, keep Allie indoors as much as
possible.

Allie doesn't have her shots, and she's
out here getting into fights with other

cats. Now, the best way to keep her safe
and the best way to keep Callie safe is

to keep her inside.

You guys got a lot of work ahead of you,

house and Callie hasn't been scratched a

bit. I'm going in, kind of holding my

happened that made that happen? We put

And now Allie hasn't been attacking as
much as she had.

About a week ago. She bounced and bit
me.

morning. Oh, my God. One huge bombshell
that was dropped on me today was that

Callie got bit.

Pam showed me a picture of the damage,
and it took my breath away. It was

bad. All right, so I'm a little
concerned about that. The damage put on

was not okay with me.

This cat doesn't really stand a chance
outside this house, but Callie doesn't

stand a chance if she keeps getting
attacked by Allie.

I have more information that we can go
over in the form of this homework.

I got to see Callie playing with Allie,
which was amazing. I got to see Pam

playing with Allie, also cool.

Pam and Callie also told me that they're
making every effort to keep Allie

indoors. And this, behaviorally, is so
important.

Because if Allie is out here, basically
fending for herself, picking fights,

she'll be acting like the feral she was
born as, as opposed to the house cat we

want her to be.

So, now, I see flags staring at me right
now, so let's head that way.

I asked them to put up flags where Allie
attacks so I could just see where the

bad behavior is happening. Because the
flags represent a pattern. Now they can

look at Allie and say she's not a
collection of random acts.

I know that this area here, Pam, is
where you tend to get your legs beat up,

right? Exactly. That's where she'll leap
out from if someone is walking by.

And, of course, that is now we can
identify as classic play aggression.

If Allie's really wound up.

And she hasn't played that day.

When legs go by that dining room table,
what are they? They're prey and she's

going to attack them.

There you are, baby.

As we wrapped up the tour, boom, out
comes Allie, who I hadn't seen all day.

Now, the last time I was here, I saw the
damage that Allie inflicted on Pam's

leg when she tried to interact with her.
But really, Allie is Callie's pet, and

she's going to be spending the most time
with the cat. So it was time to see

Callie interacting with Allie and to see
if we could form some kind of a

connection, because we can't. There's no
hope for this cat at all.

What I want to see, Callie, is I just
want to see how her bond is with you,

vocally. Normal talk that you would
usually have with her.

Okay.

Hey, little Allie.

Are you my pretty little girl?

Hmm?

Pretty, pretty Allie.

Oh, there you go. My little girl.

And just when I thought it couldn't get
any better, Callie started petting

Allie. That is a massive, massive
moment.

Pretty, pretty Allie.

So we're all sitting there, and I look
over to Callie, and she's got this kind

of wistful look in her eyes. And I'm
thinking to myself, man, this woman's 95

years old, and she deserves a full
relationship with her cat.

I'm going to put in every ounce of
effort that I've got to make sure these

stay together.

I've never seen that before.

You've never seen this before?

No. Do you think there's a possibility
that this is a meaningful breakthrough

for Allie? Oh, I know that that's what
this is.

Oh, yeah. They did their homework.

They're playing with her. They're
spending time with her. And they put on

nylon tips and avoided all of Allie's
attack areas.

And now she's a much calmer cat.

Let's start talking about homework.

I want you to really draw her out to the
middle of the room. All play here.

Really avoid around the table. All those
flags around the room demonstrated one

thing. We have a battlefield around the
dining room table. That dining room

table can't be made in play anymore.

Now, there's a few other things. When
people walk in here, give Allie a treat.

And so basically when people walk in,
boom, there's food on the floor.

I want people to come into this home and
give her treats. And my hope is that

she won't retreat to corners, to
curtains, to closets at that point. Now,

finally, this is the key to some success
that we're going to have.

So if you guys come with me.

I'd like to show you something, okay?
Okay. I've got to make Allie an indoor

cat. It's what's safer for her, and in
the long run, it's safer for Callie as

well. If we have this over this fencing,
she can't get out and nobody else can

get in, and she's safe.

I'm a little skeptical about cutting off
her access to the outside. If she's not

happy on just the catio, we may let her
out again. We'll just have to wait and

see how she responds.

You know, we'll take care of fencing
this in. You take care of making a world

for her in here that she wants to be in,
okay? I got high expectations.

When I come back here the next time
around, I'm expecting Allie to be an

cat. At the end of the day, this is
about Callie's safety. At her age, she

cannot afford to have another attack on
her.

here, they were telling me that Allie

was a brand -new cat. Well, that's
great, but Allie still bit Callie, and

a pretty nasty -looking wound. It's just
something I don't want to ever see

again on a 95 -year -old woman, so I'm
hoping no wounds, all love.

gotten any more scratches or bites since

the last time I was here?

We continue to see steady progress with
Allie. We spend a lot of time playing

with her.

We've been trying to make a point that
when anybody new comes in the house,

offer her a treat.

So far, Allie seems to be open to
playing with new people when they come

house. That would have been unheard of a
couple of weeks ago.

If I call her, she comes. That cat will
trot right over to you.

Allie, come here.

Well, that's got to feel pretty good for
you.

She likes me now.

She'll come and sit on the arm of my
chair or maybe get in my lap and sit,

is nice.

I'm really pleased with Allie's
progress, but there's one unfinished

business, and that is the last time I
was here. Allie was still going outside

whenever she wanted to, and that's not
safe for her. So I had somebody screen

Callie's patio, make it into a catio,
and now I'm just hoping that Allie's an

indoor cat.

So tell me, is she an indoor cat or is
she an outdoor cat at this point?

She's an indoor cat now.

Do you have any idea how relieved I am?

Cats don't belong outside, in my
opinion, so I just wanted this cat to be

I didn't want Callie to have to worry
about her either. So we go out onto the

catio, and all I'm hoping for is that
Allie isn't going to exhibit those feral

qualities she did the last time I was
here. So I don't want to see any

attacking, no running away, and no
hugging of the walls.

Man, I got my fingers crossed on this

That level of crazy fear that I saw the
first day that I was here. I think the

catio is definitely a good addition.
It's really brought out a whole new side

her. And she just interacts with us a
lot more, like she enjoys being in the

same house with us.

has feelings for me, I know, and she
wants to be wherever I am.

You've fought hard for this
relationship, and I feel like you're

back right now. Now that Allie is an
indoor cat, she's not acting wild, she's

not picking fights with the neighborhood
cats, she feels safe.

And a secure cat is one that won't lash
out at Callie or Pam. When I first got

here... She was most definitely a
threat, and she proved that over and

again, doing much damage to you. I want
to make sure that I can walk away now,

and you can tell me, Pam, that you feel
safe walking away tonight, that

Allie and Callie are fine together.

I feel completely confident that they're
safe together.

I feel safe.

I don't have a question in my mind.

The fact that I can walk away today, not
just thinking, okay, there's not a

threat, but there's a solid
relationship, that this woman and this

companions for each other. One is a
guardian and one is a companion.

It doesn't get any better than that.

I think we're a success story.
