I've met cats with all kinds of
problems.

But I've never met one I couldn't help.

Oh, hello. In my career, I've worked
with thousands of cats one -on -one,

analyzing their behaviors and retraining
them and their guardians.

When relationships are at an end, I
don't have many more options than to

leave. And cat guardians have reached
their emotional limit. Just get rid of

her. I'm their last hope.

Are you all right? Sorry, I don't know.
Cats have nine lives, but humans?

Only have one.

It's okay.

I'm right here in the heart of San
Francisco, and I come all this way to be

Michelle and Lindy and their cat
Burberry. Now, Burberry...

Especially this cat. She's blind. She's
deaf. She's being all over the house.

And it's the most challenging case I
think I've ever seen.

I can't wait to get my hands on this.

I'm Michelle.

I'm Lindy. I'm the mother. And I'm the
daughter.

We live together.

And we have an exotic short -haired cat.

Named Burberry.

She's deaf and blind.

She has special needs.

She's outrageously special needs.

Don't step in your poop.

Guess who just went to the bathroom by
the door?

She just completely quit cleaning
herself at all. She does no grooming.

She can be distrusting.

She draws blood. People are afraid to
come to our home.

I just think Burberry has no quality of
life, and I want to put Burberry down.

And I refuse to put Burberry down. She's
not old.

My cat's seven.

And, I mean, I remember her purring and
kneading at me, and she would leap on my

chest. I remember all that.

That Burberry's gone.

Now we have the Eagle Feral Burberry.

It's okay.

You can't even walk that far, really.

And then we got a new kitten, Burdox.

It has been horrible ever since.

I just think Burberry is not a good pet.

I don't like that she feels that
Burberry should be

dead.

Burberry is blind and deaf. Oh, my God!

Special needs to a degree I've never
worked with before, but that's why I'm

here. How old is Burberry?

She is seven years old. What's going on
with her?

She's been having glitter box issues for
quite a while.

I can't remember the last time I saw
Bur.

grooming herself at all. Okay.
Michelle's been complaining that this

been grooming herself, which is a sign
of depression.

And she reflects that in her
physicality. Burr has gotten violent.

Can you pet her?

No. You can't pet Burr? You can't even
approach her. She got very vicious with

me. Wow. Are you kidding me? No. After I
got Paradox, my other exotic short

hair, she stopped all.

No contact, no trust.

Basically a bird just kind of torturing
him a little bit. Well, we keep him

apart. How do you keep him apart?

I keep her in the bathroom usually.

All the time?

Generally, she's in the restroom.

When the blind and deaf cat is in such a
terrible state, why would you go out

and get a kitten and then put him in the
bathroom for their entire life? That

does nothing for Burberry. Burberry's
self -esteem and her sense of territory

has been sent underground.

I went to Japan for about three years,
and when I came back, it just

took a 180.

She just stopped letting anybody come
close to her or near her.

Exotic short hairs are very, very
routine -oriented. You can't guarantee

you can disappear for three years and
come back to the same exact vibe that

left. You are the hope for Burberry,
because I think it is time for Burberry

sleep.

Oh. I don't think she enjoys one minute
of her day.

I think that's ridiculous.

You guys talk about this a lot?

I argue about it.

You feel sadness. You feel anger between
these two. I mean, the resentment in

this room is the size of the Golden Gate
Bridge, and that's no joke.

Burberry's done a lot for me. She's
saved my life.

I was going through a really bad
breakup, and I was suffering.

I hate saying it, but I was on the brink
of suicide.

And Burberry was there, and I just had
something to

love and cuddle with.

I love you.

In my mind, that saved a lot.

I mean, honestly, I mean, my past is not
very different, you know? I mean, at

one point, I was at absolute rock
bottom. And there's no way that if I

surround myself with hundreds of
animals, I would surely be dead by now.

get it. In my career, I have met special
needs cats whose perseverance,

determination, and ability to give and
receive love would just blow your mind.

We can be saved from these animals. I am
living proof. Literally, I'm living

proof. I mean, that's a lot to digest.

That's a lot of information, and I
haven't even met the cat yet.

So let me take a look around here, all
right? Okay. Let's do it.

It's time to get up and let the
territory speak for itself.

We call this hallway the Valley of P.

The Valley of P.

Michelle, Lindy, and I go into the
hallway where there's a litter box, and,

course, it's completely pristine.

The whole hallway gets peed up?

Every inch of it. That, to me, is a
little odd, and it can only say one

own the room that's beyond this wall.

I want to keep the momentum going a
little bit here. I've got to see these

together. I've got to see the behavior
between these two cats if I'm going to

fix it. So I asked Lindy, can you please
just bring Paradox out to the other

room so I can see him in there with
Burberry?

Okay, just hang with me.

Okay. Seriously, I'm not going to let it
get bad, all right?

It's okay.

All right, here we go again.

Oh,

as soon as she put that kitten down,
Burberry really went after Paradox, and

that was because of the smell.

You've got a deaf and blind cat, and if
all they're smelling is threat, that's

all the world consists of.

And then Burberry scurried away to her
safe area, and boom, she was off.

Hi, babe.

You can't hear me, can you?

Whoa, okay there.

It's okay, it's okay.

Can you feel that?

Galaxy, I'm literally just talking to
myself right now.

It's okay, baby. It's okay. I can't
think of what I can do to lure her out.

doesn't know I'm talking to her. She
can't hear.

that you're going to like, huh?

Something with a tail to it. Sound isn't
going to help you.

bit, right? I had this realization.

Now it wasn't a matter of how little
Burberry could see. It was about how

she could see.

And that I can work with. Take steps.

What is that?

You know I'm trusting you right now,

You understand what that means?

You're going to bite the toe in, not the
leg?

In that moment, I knew that this cat
didn't have to be euthanized. That was

the table. This cat could get through
this problem, and I could help her get

through it.

Well, well, well.

First of all, Burberry has some ability
to see things.

Wow. Yeah. And let's put something to
rest now.

In other circumstances where I think,
you know...

Some kind of drastic intervention might
have been called for. It's not here. Oh,

my God, I'm so relieved that she no
longer has to worry about getting

because Jackson got to see a little bit
of the twinkle in Burberry's eyes.

Expand her ownership of the world. What
does that mean? More litter boxes, and I

mean all over the place.

Yeah. Toy -wise, find interactive toys
that engage her, not just with you but

without you. Here are some great toys,
right?

I mean, this is a puzzle toy. Take a
whiff.

It's lovely, right? It smells like fish.

I mean, this is all about giving her
what she can use. She can use her paws.

can use her nose. She really can
establish territory in her very limited

We've got to get her feeling like she
owns something.

So the way to do that is first
attempting her out with these great

When she gets there, you breath her in
different places all around the house,

and those places will become places of
ownership.

Yeah. And finally, Doc isn't any more
familiar with dealing with a blind and

deaf cat than I am.

That's true. So we've got to let them at
each other enough so that we can have

that communication started. Yeah. Okay.

in the first place. A case like

Burberry's, one of the most complex I've
ever dealt with.

She's basically blind.

She's deaf. She's attacking people and
other animals like Paradox the kitten.

And the fighting over putting Burberry
down is ripping mother and daughter

apart. So this time, I'm ready for
anything.

Welcome back.

Well, look who's here.

I know she's now, you know, I keep the
bathroom door open, so she now has full

reign of the house.

Seriously, this is the same cat who the
last time I was here beat me senseless

in a bathroom. So I asked Lindy and
Michelle to really go to town on toys to

pull Burberry out of her dendian area.
But I don't think anybody expected the

level of presence socially that Burberry
had today. She has a lot less stress.

It's amazing how, just like us, they
manifest that stress. They stop

They'll look oilier. But she looks a lot
better.

All right, tell me what else.

We put the kitty litter boxes throughout
the house, and the only place she will

now accident is in her bathroom.

Okay. The hallway, which had marks all
over it, is now completely spared, so

that means that she just was feeling
territorially threatened, and now she

doesn't anymore.

Wow. Well, I'm heading back to L .A.
then. No, no, no. There's still a few

little bits left.

Okay. What else has been going on?

With my other cat, Perdox, it didn't
work too well. He's realized

her disabilities, so he'll go run up and
pounce on her.

I mean, he's just being a kitten.

Perdox is the problem, because if you're
not going to exercise a kitten, that

kitten's going to look for a target.
And, of course, that target's going to

Burberry. Now, you guys also shot some
video for me. Thank you very much.

Come on, Burberry.

Oh. That worked.

Beautiful.

Would you say that she's content right
now? Oh, she's pretty gosh darn happy.

Oh, wow.

Interesting. I know.

We got some great moments in there.

How are you feeling?

I'm absolutely delighted because I had
thought we were going to have to put her

down, and here I now have my friend
back.

Yeah.

Because had Lindy not called you, I was
going to put her down. So it's a little

hard to forgive myself.

Michelle felt guilty that at some point
she was recommending euthanasia for this

cat. And you could tell that with her
guilt, on the other side, there was

with a lot of anger that she wasn't
putting forward. I mean, look, I can

the cat's problems, but I've got to heal
the human problems at the same time.

spot, but I'm going to put you on the

As soon as we get up and walk around,
Burberry starts playing with one of

new sensory toys that's on the floor.

Wow. This is Burberry actually acting
like a cat.

I'm glad that you guys got toys like
this. I mean, this is really, really

cat, you've got to take any sense that

they have and amp it.

to the nth degree. What vision she does
have when the light plays off that

We've got to get her to that point where
she feels like she can coexist with

So it's time for us to do a little
something I call eat, play, love. We

have positive associations around one
another, so we're going to start with

play. We're going to get these guys
doing things around one another that are

just to the moon positive, which are
food, play time, and cuddle time for

guys. Last time I was here, big fight in
this room.

Oh.

This time around, there's no way that
fight's going to happen.

Let's get Docs in here and we'll start
this thing.

Okay. It makes me nervous when I know
they're going to be in a room together.

I have seen Docs become a bit of a bully
to Burberry, and I don't want Burberry

regressing back either.

Hold up with putting Docs out.

Now, Michelle, make sure you're really
working that thing.

Michelle has to be commanding Burberry's
attention. Come on.

If she doesn't, it's game over.

Okay, so in comes Doc.

Michelle, make sure you keep it
interesting for her. I want her

something over there. Keep him moving.

Come on, Doc.

Now, Lindy, try to get Doc's moving a
little bit. Michelle, it's real

now that you just keep her moving in a
direction.

I'm trying. Because as soon as, yeah,
right, there you go. Perfect, perfect,

perfect. You got Doc's occupied.

You got Burberry occupied.

So the concept of eat, play, love is
positive association. We start with

then we do eat, then we finish with
love.

Eventually, they just know good things
will happen around that other cat.

When I come back here next time, really
what I expect is that eat, play, love

has taken over the house. Also, no more
of the bathroom being a safe place.

Start bringing all of her stuff out so
that whatever is actually safe begins to

take over the rest of the house.

I want Lindy to extinguish the bathroom
as a safe place.

And in the meantime, I want them to
continue on this path of the sensory

and all these sensory products.

This right here is a pretty cool
concept. So the last thing I brought,

massaging back pad. And I thought since
cats remember that their mother was

purring while they were feeding off of
her, that maybe there's a measure of

safety that... Burberry can get from
this piece. Now remember, this isn't

designed for cats, but you've got to be
thinking outside the box when you've got

a special needs cat like Burberry. Big
overriding principle here is using

sensory experiences to heighten her life
experience.

Okay? Okay.

For my last visit, I want to come back
and see these two owning the same space

without Burberry being paranoid,
thinking she's going to get jumped. Any

deserves a full life, and this one is
finally going to get that chance to have

However, they are actually prone to
deafness.

40 % of white cats with one blue eye are
born deaf.

Meanwhile, nearly 85 % of white cats
with two blue eyes are born deaf.

We're dealing with a cat that's deaf,

practically blind, and dealing with a
new kitten in her life.

I gave them a whole bunch of homework
last time. If these guys committed to

homework, we got a good outcome. If they
didn't, I don't know what I'm walking

Last time I was here, the bathroom
itself was the main place left, and she

still going outside the litter box.

Yeah, she doesn't go there anymore, not

We've had no more pee problems going on.

Can you even believe that? No, I cannot.

It's amazing.

She owns the place.

Yeah.

Instead of having this teeny little
place to call her own, she's got the

house. Oh, my God.

She's just going around now with a sense
of belonging, and Burberry has not gone

outside the litter box one time. So,
let's take a look at your video

The best fun stuff for me.

She is on the massaging bed.

I have it underneath her blanket.

She's absolutely loving that.

The last time I was here, I brought this
massaging pad with me to really cater

the world towards this special needs
cat, and that's become a huge hit.

That's pretty fun.

Yeah. There was one piece of video
homework that honestly, snapshot, I'll

take that with me. The two cats eating
this close to one another. There's no

you could have told me a couple weeks
ago they'd be doing that. So everything

you say is true.

So we had just gotten some terrific news
of sitting there talking to one

another. But it wasn't until we walked
into the living room and I saw her

grooming herself that I said, now there,
that's the cat that I was missing.

This is why you do all the work that you
do. You know that reflects confidence.

It reflects self -esteem. It reflects
happiness.

A depressed cat doesn't groom, and a
happy cat does.

All right, now.

I got to show you some eat, play, love.

Okay. So the concept of eat, play, love
is I wanted to take all the delicious

things in a cat's life, put it all into
one exercise, and the only time that

these guys experience that level of fun
and goodness is around one another.

Ready? Mm -hmm.

Let's do it. When I first showed eat,
play, love to Lindy and Michelle, I had

give them a ton of instructions. Now I
want to see how far they've come on

own.

Yes, good girl.

Ah, yes.

Last time I was here, I was really hands
-on with them. This time, Lindy and

Michelle are working eat, play, love
like pros.

And that's why I was so pumped up,
because it was really a perfect ending.

Burberry's case, not only for Burberry,

other people who are deterrent from
having a special needs cat.

Burberry has saved my life, and it was
my time to save Burberry's life. So it

was the best gift that I could ever have
given Burberry.

Honestly, it's been a real privilege to
work with this cat, so thank you. Not

only did you save our pet, you saved a
lot of pain from Lindy and I. You

helped our family be whole again.

Before we met with Jackson, I really was
mindset that Burberry had to be put

down. I'm so glad I lost that argument.

the city. I can't get enough of it. But

if you're David or Rebecca, city life
has its challenges.

They all live in apartments like this,
and if you're a cat and a dog trying to

live together, those challenges can be
pretty heavy duty.

Leo the cat's having problems, and I'm
going to find out what those are.

I'm Rebecca.

I'm David. And we've been together for
eight years, married for five.

Leo is our cat.

Da Vinci is our other cat.

The black one.

Nala is our little bundle of Rhodesian
joy.

And our cat Leo and our dog Nala fight
all the time.

Oh, God.

Imagine this is happening 15 to 20 times
a day.

Oh, God. What if one day Leo gets Nala
in the eyes? I mean, she could be

severely hurt or worse, blinded.

Oh, my God. Oh, my God. It's been so
exhausting trying to find a solution. I

mean, I'm literally...

They got my wits in.

I literally am emotionally and
physically wiped out.

When I think about wanting to start a
family, it's hard because I know we

right now.

No, no, I'll leave him alone.

Oh, God. I can't even imagine myself on
a day, you know, with a kid, a dog, the

cats, fighting and going crazy all the
time.

I would absolutely not bring a baby into
this environment.

Something has to change because we want
to have a family.

Excited to be here. Good. You got this
beautiful, bouncy, what is she, a puppy,

yeah? Yeah. 15 months. She's just
totally gorgeous.

But that's not why I'm here.

No. So Da Vinci's our black cat. Okay.
Leo's our white cat. I would say the

problem maybe lies more with Leo, the
white cat.

Okay. And when him and Nala get in close
proximity, kind of all hell breaks

loose. The first time we brought Nala
home, Nala went to Leo and wanted to

and pounced on him.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks were created to
round up lions, surround them, and keep

them busy until the hunters came in to
finish the job.

Kind of ironic when you think about the
fact that we have Leo the lion here, who

is being cornered and then gets stuck.

Nala, come here. That was Leo. Was that
a hiss? Because I'm a little deaf. No,

no, no. No, no, no.

Nala. Nala, no.

Don't do that. Go over there.

Okay, then.

That's 15, 20 times a day, at least.
That's very common.

Blood. Blood?

Yeah.

Yeah. Are you kidding me?

Where are you guys right now in this
whole thing?

Imagine me, like, being pregnant or
having a newborn, and this fight ensues.

This gets in the way of children?

Rebecca and David told me they really
want to start a family, and that's in

near future, but there's no way they're
going to do it with the level of chaos

that they have in the house right now.

Let's get up, let's take a look around
the place, and let's see what we can

piece together, okay?

David and Rebecca had a lot to tell me,
but the space itself was going to tell

me even more.

Did you have other plans for this room?
Was this going to be something?

We purposely got a bedroom with a den
because we wanted the cats. We wanted a

space. Their own area.

Right on.

Okay, here we go.

No. So this is what you guys see all the
time. Right. The blocks up into the

corner. The corner. The corner, as I
said.

This. is what happens 15 times a day.
And guys, I have only been here for 10

minutes. Yeah, you see, that is very
concerning.

His instinct is wrong.

Yeah. His instinct is throw myself into
a corner and hope for the best. Yeah.

I see problems with the cat tower in the
corner because that corner is where Leo

gets cornered all the time by Nala. He
goes under it. It's that line in the

sand. This belongs to me. And if you
come nearby, I'm going to swipe at you.

What led you to putting the food inside
like that?

It doesn't allow Nala to get the food
and eat it out of the box. All of a

sudden, I turn around, and she's eating
poop out of the litter box.

Look at that. Covered in litter. Covered
in litter right now. And here's the

other thing. Not only is it disgusting,
it's really bad for her. Right.

Eating clay litter is a real problem for
dogs. It's made of a substance called

sodium bentonite. That's what makes it
clump, but it also expands in their GI

tract and can cause a lot of problems
down the line. We try our best to

her. That involves the constant running
around and making sure she's not in

here. I know they think they're being
good dog guardians, but there wasn't a

single command that they gave this dog
today that that dog listened to at all.

This whole room.

is an issue the fact that we don't have
a door this is something that we really

have to look at okay we have to commit
to it being safe haven because right now

it is definitely not i was expecting him
to say wow you guys have a cat room

that's awesome that's not the reaction
we got oh is that what's going on over

here let's just go quickly take a look
here she chased him he goes up i just

want to see this happen don't stop it
okay oh okay There's Da Vinci being

up onto the counter by Nala, not in an
aggressive way, totally in a playful

puppy way, but how do you tell that to a
cat?

He hides his stress very well. Right.
But the fact that he has to decompress

tells you that his stress level went up.
Went so high, okay. Right. This.

is why I actually go to people's homes.
Because I thought I had it down. One cat

gets along with a dog, one cat doesn't.
It couldn't be further from the truth.

The dog stresses them both out to no
end. They just deal with it completely

differently. So I'm going to start
giving you homework.

Okay. You referred to this area as Cat
Haven. Yes. And it's anything but right

now. Right. We are going to make the
destination and not a trap.

And I'm going to give you the
prerequisite.

Okay. Okay? The tower is the first place
that you start.

You can figure out... how to not make it
trap -worthy.

Now, I want you to see exactly how your
cats are seeing this.

With that in mind, I want you to borrow
my collar cam.

Okay? All you've got to do is put this
on Nala's collar.

Leo is such a second -class citizen at
this point, and I really want to

highlight that to David and Rebecca.

Now they're going to see what it looks
like to be hunted by Nala, up close and

personal. And finally, we have to work
against the nature of the Rhodesian

Ridgeback here. If she can't do a sit
-stay while Leo is walking around her,

will never work. David and Rebecca have
let Nala run wild. But until they get a

sit and a stay down, I'm going to have
them use a toy as a distraction.

When she rolls it around, out come
little treats.

So it's all about Leo.

Having exposure to this dog 50 times and
50 times, nothing bad happens. Okay.

Really what it boils down to is two cats
that are being terrorized by a puppy

and a puppy who's bred to do nothing but
corner prey.

fighting still ensues.

Leo likes to burrow himself in the
cupboards on the lower.

So battle lines have shifted, but
battles are still happening.

Absolutely. Last time I was here, we
were talking about in the neighborhood

20 times a day, fishing 20 times a day.
Probably I would say half, 10 times a

day now.

I know, right? We've set up the cat
haven. We have the gate up.

The number of attacks that they see has
decreased dramatically.

That was just so wonderful.

The last time I came here, we were
talking about basics.

Of dog training. So if he's in there,
Nala walks by, what do you do?

We just try to get her attention, you
know, say a command.

It has been something we've been working
on, and definitely for me especially,

the hardest one.

All right. Okay. We have a lot of things
to work on. Now, the cool thing is we

have video homework as well.

Cat tree is in the middle of the room
now, making sure they have exit routes.

The first time I was here, I told David
and Rebecca to construct Cat Haven.

Back here, we have the litter.

And Nala Cam showed David and Rebecca
what a disaster it is to be a cat in

household.
