but I've never met one I couldn't help.

In my career, I've worked with thousands
of cats one -on -one, analyzing their

behaviors and retraining them and their
guardians.

When relationships are at an end, I feel
like I have to choose between my best

friends. and cat guardians have reached
their emotional limit, It's the end of

Rob and Stephanie sent me in a video of
their cat Stella, and they say that

Stella is stopping them from having a
family.

And we met outside a bar, and it was
love at first sight for both of us.

And we got married three and a half
years ago.

Stella, which was her first cat.

We also have three other cats and two
dogs.

And we have a really, really happy home.

Except for one thing.

Stella's problems right now are biting,
hissing, peeing on things.

Crap. We're really at the point where we
don't know what to do. At this time,

we're not able to bring a baby into the
household the way that it is with

Stella.

We both really, really want a family.

I think if we didn't have Stella, we
would have a family by now.

And it's really hard to hear my parents,
his parents, telling us that we need to

give her away.

The way we look at it, she's a member of
our family.

She's a child.

If we had to give Stella away, my dad
won't take her, my mom won't take her,

parents won't take her, my brother won't
take her. No one likes her.

So the shelter really would be like her.

I can't even imagine thinking about
that, you know?

So, yeah.

So Jackson really is our last resort
here.

I'm about to go in and meet Rob and
Stephanie, and I've watched the video. I

mean, she attacks them, she has them in
fear, and I don't blame them for

thinking twice about having a baby right
about now.

He walked in the door and I saw him.

Pretty sizable guy with a bright pink
shirt, tattoos, earrings, and I thought

someone had the wrong, uh, address.

Well, uh, we have a number of animals
here. Everybody gets along really well,

except for Stella. Okay. Who, in
addition to being extremely destructive,

ripping up furniture, clawing furniture,
urinating, marking her territory, so on

and so forth.

She is also completely alienated from
all the other animals.

When Stella started experiencing other
cats, did her behavior get exponentially

worse? She's gotten worse. Every time
you had another cat.

We'd like to have children.

It is pretty much an impossibility to
bring an infant into the same

as Stella.

Because of the violence?

Because of the aggressiveness.

I can remember being like... 13 years
old, and it's Parents' Day at school,

everybody's parents look the same, but
then there's one friend of yours whose

dad is like 65.

I don't want to be that funky old dad
because my cat won't let me have a kid.

All right, so it's about that time for
me to see the rest of the house. You got

some damage for me to see, I assume.

Oh. We do.

And hopefully I get to meet Stella.

The first thing I see in the living
room.

It's all of this wrapped up furniture.

This is how it was delivered to this
house four and a half years ago. So

that scared that you've never even,
like... I'm not scared. I just don't

want to see it destroyed.

In four plus years, they've never been
able to enjoy what should be their home,

and it's all because of Stella?

That's just not right.

All right, well, I've seen everything
that I need to see here.

Show me the rest of the house.

Okay. Sounds good. Okay.

You can definitely...

Smell the the cat you're here actually
come down it gets worse. Oh, yeah, it's

like going into Dante's Inferno of piss
the smell in that room will knock you

off your feet Take a good deep breath in

And then the real piece de resistance is

There is a really important thing that
we have to look at. She has created

Stellaland. To me, it's really sad. She
urinates because she's anxious, and then

she's scratching at the carpet because
she wants Rob and Stephanie to know, I

exist, I live here. She makes the rounds
with her pee to say, Let's just make

sure this is Stella Land. We have to
assure her.

Yes, it's Stella Land. We promise. You
don't have to take it. It's given. The

thing about Stella is that, yes, she's
very territorially insecure, but it's

justified because she lives in a house
full of animals and people, and they're

going to have a baby too. Poor Stella.

There she is. I would like to see you
guys interact with her. Touch her the

I was relieved to find out that that
wasn't the case.

She acts out when she's provoked.

Okay. She had a fall where we don't know
what happened to her. She came home

with a big cut right next to her tail
and took her to the vet. There was no

broken bones.

I've known many cats who haven't
actually broken anything, but as they

older, they become arthritic around
those areas.

She might have a little. She just has
some pain. And if she has pain, then

time you guys go to touch her back here,
it's ouch.

Gotcha. I got to make sure she's not
suffering either from arthritis or from

some lingering pain from the accident
she had years ago.

What I see is a cat who territorially
feels like she doesn't have a place.

I used to own, now I don't own, pee, now
I do. And we're going to solve that,

okay? Now, let's talk homework, okay?

The first thing that we're going to do,
I really want a lot of litter boxes

downstairs.

between six and eight litter boxes. Oh,
no. It's totally cool because the thing

is, in your house is one huge litter box
right now. You've got a point. I just

want her peeing in a box. So something
else I really want to do, I've felt

Stella's rear area. I don't like the way
she's holding her tail. I think that

it's important that we do get her
checked out.

Now, the last thing that I've got, she
has no height. We talked about being

surrounded on the floor and not being
able to claim that floor anymore.

The thing is, you guys have a beautiful,
big house. It needs to be catified.

Okay. We're going to have cat furniture
and shelving in here. I want her to be

able to traverse this room without
touching the floor.

He likes it.

It's real now that Jackson's here, but
I'm a little fearful of the changes that

are going to be coming in the future.
Just because I'm so used to Stella the

that she's been for eight years and the
way that I've handled her and how Rob's

handled her, I guess I'm a little
nervous to know if it's going to work.

time I was here, Stella was a complete
nightmare.

She had these guys convinced they

We put some cat furniture up. Yeah.
Which I think has been used.

We cleaned up the pee, and there was a
lot of it. And we also implemented

putting out extra litter boxes. And, of
course, the big thing, getting the

results back from...

of that she had some kind of unknown
trauma we don't know the source of it

there's a laceration that she spoke of
i'm seeing what looks like some mild

arthritic changes there so i'm going to
plan on doing next is putting stella on

acupuncture treatment and also an oral
joint supplement Those are going to help

to make her joints healthier and safely
reduce inflammation.

Have you noticed any change in her
overall demeanor? Yeah. I think she's

more calm and a little bit more at ease.

I love that you guys have started to
address this.

But we had talked about shelving last
time. There's no shelving going on. So

tell me why.

Well, to be honest with you, I didn't
really dig the aesthetic.

One thing that really upset me was
coming into Rob and Stephanie's house

seeing that Rob hadn't even attempted to
put up some shelving.

The idea of having it on the wall was
sort of problematic.

Now, I'm doing this for Stella's well
-being. I want to see her be the cat

she can be. I want to see her up off the
floor, not competing for space with the

other animals.

I'm hoping that the next time I come
back here, I see those shelves up on the

wall. Now, just to reiterate how much I
love this thing, the great thing about

this, I just love the stepping up thing.
For Stella, at this point, we're going

to get her pain managed, and we're also
going to still allow her to get up and

see the world away from dogs and away
from other cats and survey her

Let's go check out downstairs the den
and all the other good stuff, okay? All

right. Jackson actually liked the cat
tree that we picked out because it had

different levels, and there was a low
level for Stella to go on. So far, we've

done a good job.

Okay. Smells a little better.

I can still smell it. You can still
totally smell it in here.

Now, the first thing I noticed when I
walked downstairs was being smacked in

face, almost just like last time with
that smell.

Obviously, they didn't clean as well as
they could have.

But let's go on to the good stuff. I
love this box.

I love this one. I love the fact that
you guys listen to me. Clean that place

a little bit and put out litter boxes.
It goes a long way.

Just in those.

You know, past couple of days, I've
noticed things have really improved.

I remember last time she really was
lunging at Rob and striking and

and causing you to bleed, and this time
she just seemed kind of content.

The progress is amazing.

She did have a moment. Yeah, she had a

So this area here represents trauma,

Yeah. But that, what I'm getting from
her right now, is saying, buddy,

minutes ago. Now we put her in a place

where we activated the trauma. Okay, so

She is like a walking feline textbook
right now of what it looks like to be

activated. When you're in a room with a
cat and she's sitting there with her

back away from you, it tells you a very
clear message, which is, I don't want to

be a part of this. I'm removing myself
from this. So if I don't look at it,

not there.

Hi, Pumpkin. It's okay. I'm sorry.

It's okay, Stella.

I'm sorry. So what is this? Now she's
putting her tail up?

She's trying.

She's trying to shake it off. Come on.
That is a big difference. The Stella

I met last time I was here would do
nothing like this. She was about living

that moment. Good girl. She was about
living in the moment of being pissed off

and grouchy.

I'm very sorry, sweet baby. I'm sorry.

You're trying hard, aren't you? It's
okay, baby doll. We're laying the

foundation here to build a better cat, a
better Stella. We want Stella to be at

a place where she can accept touch,
where she can accept company, so that we

think about bringing a baby into this
home as well. And I think, again, we're

not all the way there. We're halfway
there.

seen scratching posts like this. Now
here, let me show you. We're going to

leading her towards places where we want
her to scratch.

This will be one of those things. So you

furniture, and that'll be our way of

second one, I chose this one because, A,
it's horizontal.

The other thing I was thinking was,
well, If they go for furniture, couches,

they want to scratch horizontally on
these things, I want to give them their

piece of furniture.

Sometimes I'm really surprised by the
lengths that people will go to keep

safe. Like Rob will sit there and wrap
his furniture and not have seen it in

four years.

Yet there's not one scratching surface
in that house where the cats can go.

Rob, this is where it becomes really
important for you because I will not

until you uncover some of this
furniture.

But in order to do that, we have to have
the yes established by next time I'm

here. But as long as we can say to them,

all we care about, okay? So it's a big

We know now that she's arthritic. The
barometric pressure drops, and it just

puts pressure on things like arthritic
joints. She's going to have grouchy

What else? I steam cleaned the carpet.

thing.

Very cool. So we're better on that whole
area downstairs. Now, I just got to

turn my attention to this.

First of all, thank you. These shelves,
they were beautiful looking, and they

were functional looking.

I think this is amazing looking.

I love that. They're using that
scratching area. They haven't scratched

plastic on the furniture.

They haven't gone through anything.

Now, it's time, Rob. Let's do this. Come
on. The biggest thing that I wanted to

do, the thing that I wanted to leave
these guys with, was being able to take

this plastic off this furniture. I don't
even remember what it looks like. And

today was our day. Should we do it?

I'm so excited that Rob actually
embraced this process.

As always, I wanted to take a tour of
the house to see how the progress was.

The first place we stopped was the den.

Rob and Stephanie steam cleaned the
carpet, but they also used an enzymatic

cleaner. An enzymatic cleaner is a
biodegradable, non -toxic cleaning agent

breaks down protein -based... The energy
in here is completely different. The

thing I was looking forward to the most
was, of course, spending some time with

Stella. Look who it is, Stella.

Oh, hi, baby doll.

Stella.

The fact that she's seeking attention
from you is just beautiful.

Her aggressiveness has diminished
significantly.

I haven't been bitten or scratched once
in the past, I don't know, the last

time. There was such a massive change in
Stella from first time to the last

This time, she was just bouncing around
from person to person. Hi.

And owning the room confidently.

This is the good little girl that we
both knew was there.

The change I've seen in Stella before
you got here, she's really

unhappy.

I can't believe we're at the end of this
experience, but it's actually really

you, it's got to feel like a fist.

I'm Cameron.

We've been together for about two years,
living together also about two years.

Our relationship is very strong, but one
of the main causes of most

disagreements comes from Mr. Fluff.

Mr. Fluff is my cat. I found him in
downtown Los Angeles during the rainy

season, and he was a homeless street
cat.

He seemed really well -behaved until
about a week into him being there. Then,

like, the demon kitty kind of came out.

No. Fluff, no. Now he's like this big
old fat cat. He's got a bad attitude.

Mr. Fluff will definitely attack us.

Fluff, no. Fluff, no.

We both have him.

Fluff.

Matching battle wounds.

He's just so sedentary and then...

He snaps and he just goes crazy.

Rips up the carpet, rips up the couch,
the screen, runs up and down the stairs.

If you're coming from around the corner,
he's like hunting you.

Then you go in to pet his head and he
jumps up. He'll literally get on his

legs and he'll jump up. And if you leave
it there too long, he'll grab you.

When Mr. Fluff acts up, I will give him
treats.

That's just what I've done for so long,
and it's how I get him to stop.

Me, I'm a little more strict.

Cameron threatens him with the pillow,
and Cameron does not ever hit him with

the pillow, but that's so scary. Imagine
being the cat.

Imagine being me, getting attacked all
the time. I know, but I still disagree

with doing that.

The problem with Mr. Fluff is just him
keeping us from sleeping at night. We've

been together for two years, and it's
just been like...

Nothing's gotten better. We need
something to happen now.

If Mr. Fluff can't get help, then I may
have to move out.

furniture, any screen doors we have.

Not only is it just stressful dealing

Because Cameron is... Very very
aggressive in the way that he deals with

and I am very loving It's the constant
stressor to come home

to Fluff aggression and having to like
you know tiptoe around or feel like I'm

walking on eggshells in my own house for
cat Okay, I feel so torn and so sad

about it. I mean I will never give up
fluff I will never bring him to a pound

give him away The only solution is I
just have to find some other living

situation.

Time is ticking then, huh?

Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So let's get to work.

The stakes are huge here.

Either this gets fixed or Cameron said,
I'm going to find another place to live.

The pressure's high for me and for Mr.
Fluff.

You can see right there is like a really
deep scratch that he did, which doesn't

even look like anyone could do that. I
mean, it scares me. I have never seen a

scratch that deep from a cat before.
Now, a big cat can do a lot of damage,

I've got to find a way for Mr. Fluff to
expend his energy on something besides

the furniture, the carpet, and the wall.

So, I want to recreate the whole ritual
that you were describing. One of you

guys goes to the bed. Yeah, I'm usually
the first one to bed. Usually the one.

I pry myself, hit the switch, run, and
we have to try to get towards the center

of the bed.

He'll go crazy. He's literally like
jumping at our feet. He'll run around

apartment. He'll drop things over. And
we just have to try to not move, not

a sound, so that eventually it'll stop.

This is what you go through every night?

Yeah, pretty much.

That bedroom scenario that I watched was
one of the most insane rituals around a

cat that I have ever seen in my life.

This is Fluff's punishment for bad
behavior is mounds and mounds of food.

He's free fed all day. I always leave
him a bowl of dry food. But he does

eat. Like when he gets annoyed or
something, you'll see him always come

just start taking mounds full of food.

And then I'll give him one can of wet
food a night. Okay. And then treats.

He's a big boy.

Yeah. And I'll stop being gentle. He's
fat.

When cats are obese, they're carrying
around extra weights naturally on their

joints. When they're carrying around
that extra weight on their joints, it

make them irritable. That could be part
of the reason we're seeing so much

aggression out of Mr. Fluff.

Right now, I want to see what happens in
your normal everyday interactions with

him. How would you get him out? If you
need to get him out right now, I need to

see that.

Come on, pup.

I know.

I know, I know, I know.

Uh -oh.

This movement, going to a cat and going
over their head like that, is a physical

manifestation of fear and distrust.

Over the top is almost like I expect you
to do bad things. When you expect bad

things, bad things happen.

Maine Coons were bred in the Northeast
to do one thing and one thing only, and

that was to protect grain stores.

They said, wait a minute, you guys can
kill vermin? Yes, we can kill vermin.

Well, then you can hang around.

Now, he's obviously a professional
mouser because he just grabbed it with

hand and it would have been dead.

What we're going to be doing is
expending his energy. The energy that he

all night long torturing you guys, he's
got to be torturing these things.

I want him to do what he does naturally
to hold you hostage, but this time you

hold the cards.

Okay. A Maine Coon is uniquely
conditioned to do this hunting. So

let's pay attention to it. Let's play
into it. And at the same time, we're

to exercise him in a very condensed...

aerobically fulfilling way so that he

You are teaching the hunter to hunt
something. Your job, as we're going to

forward, is to keep him active in his
job.

Playtime into feeding time, feeding time
into sleeping time.

His rhythms will start to reset over the
course of the week.

Also, because Mr. Bluff has so much pent
-up energy, playing with him on a daily

basis may help stop some of his
destructive behaviors, like scratching

carpet and furniture.

Chasing mice is in Mr. Fluff's DNA, so
what better way to satisfy that need to

hunt than to chase a mouse toy? How have
things been?

It's definitely made a difference with
just the few suggestions that you've

After you came last time was one of the
first times to actually slept through

the night by the bed and didn't mess
with us at all. He allowed you to sleep

that night. Did he allow you to get into
bed?

Yeah, he did. I think it's, I think he
was exhausted.

He needs to not be hyper when we're
going to sleep. Yeah. Tucker him out.

Jessica and Cameron had this insane
ritual of running away from Mr. Fluff

bed every night. The first night after I
left, they played with Mr. Fluff before

bed and he went straight to sleep. So it
looks like the play sessions are really

working. So now tell me about since then
trying to establish a routine so that

One thing he's still doing is getting up
on the bed and patting my face when I'm

sleeping, like when he's ready for me to
get up. He's like, it's breakfast.

to it obviously well. Yeah. Because now
he's got a schedule that he's adhering

to. I mean, I'll still bring him, like
from work, I'll bring him home chicken

something like that, or we'll give him

I want to establish a routine for Mr.
Fluff. I want to see him eating twice a

day and only twice a day. Now, once this
routine is established, then Jessica

can give him treats when it's
appropriate. But for right now, I want

strict plan.

mouth toy, and it took five seconds, and

that cat was out like a shot. It was a
brilliant moment.

It is time for the scratching to stop
and start at the same time.

I think that this one's really going to

he can sleep, he can also sort of see

you, and he puts down scratching scent

next couple weeks.

I want you to work on getting other
types of products for him to scratch on.

Scratchers that serve a double purpose,
that he can lay on and he can also

scratch because then we're taking care
of the horizontal surfaces that he tends

to go for. We're going to strike treats.

No more nonsense. I think it's very
feasible with the diet that he's on, the

very healthy, high -protein diet, what
we call the Katkins diet. I can easily

see about a pound, maybe even a little
bit more come off.

The truth was, if you couldn't get some
rest, if you couldn't live kind of

unmolested by Mr. Fluff, that you guys
were actually thinking about living

separately.

Have you had more discussions about
that? I mean, it's definitely a big

easier but it's not exactly where i want
to be as far as a living situation
