I'm not going to walk down the aisle
until our cat is no longer crazy.

It's the end of the line for Larry.

Every morning, I have to chase Ruby from
the house and get her to go into the

bedroom. Come on.

And she attacks me.

I think she's got a vein or something. I
have to be able to control Ruby.

I'm afraid she's going to attack one of
my clients.

I'm Jackson Galaxy. I'm a musician by
night.

and a cat behaviorist by day.

I've met cats with all kinds of
problems.

But I've never met one I couldn't help.

In my career, I've worked with thousands
of cats, one -on -one, analyzing their

behaviors and retraining them and their
guardians.

When relationships are at an end, I feel
like I have to choose between my best

friends. and cat guardians have reached
their emotional limit, the end of the

line. I'm their last hope.

I think your fear feeds the dynamic
between the two of you. Cats have nine

lives, but humans only have one.

Right now I'm on my way to Tara and
Josh's house. These guys sent in a

And we met at my work at a bar. I took
her out for dinner. I asked her out. And

we've been together for three and a half
years.

Our relationship is wonderful. And we're
engaged.

Larry came to us by a friend of ours.
She had found this little tiny kitten in

an alley. She didn't want the cat. So
she goes, do you want it? We said, we'll

take her, you know, and... She was so
little, we didn't know if it was a her

have a name at first.

We named our girl cat a boy's name
because... It just fit her personality.

Literally attacked.

Crazy thing is she ambushes a lot.

It's like getting a flashback all of a
sudden.

She decides, like, now she's back in the

on.

It makes no sense.

Larry's not normal and mean. Larry's
just crazy mean.

Larry pees all over the house.

No, she sprays. I'm constantly cleaning
up after her and I'm constantly wiping

things down. I'm making sure it doesn't
smell like pee. It's frustrating.

Larry's behavior affects our
relationship.

Well, it's because you're holding her
like that. Look, I try to touch her

and she freaks out. I get upset because
sometimes I feel like he's really going

to hurt her. He gets so angry sometimes.

You just got to be... The only way they
know that they've done something wrong

is if you hit them right when it's
happening. Yeah, but she doesn't learn

it.

Normally, we argue over the discipline.

Everything's great. We're engaged.

But I'm not going to walk down the

Larry's the only point of contention. We
just want to have a normal house with a

normal cat. I'm not willing to walk
around with shin guards all day.

When I walk backwards, she doesn't
attack me.

through your house. Is that normal? No,

but I'm just saying, when I notice it, I
mean, it's not a big house. For me, at

least, it's the end of the line for
Larry. There's no option to give Larry

Looks like a convict just showed up in

my front door and I thought we would get
a cat whisperer. I just thought, thank

God he's here finally.

I don't want to get married until we
take care of Larry.

Because right now, our cat Larry is
crazy. And our cat Larry is a girl. Why

you have a girl cat named Larry?

She has a Larry personality.

Anyway.

So, Larry is, what, violent?

Yeah. Yeah.

One minute she'll be completely sane,
and the next minute she'll be attacking

us.

Does she do with teeth and claws? Yeah.
Yeah.

Did anybody age her when you first got
her? No. We got her legitimately, feel

the palm of my hand. I mean, when we
first got Larry, I wasn't really a cat

person, but look at her.

She's so cute. Over time, she's like my
little kid. So when you first got her,

eyes were open, though.

Kittens normally open their eyes between
8 and 10 days old. That way, I can age

the kitten by were her eyes open or were
they closed.

Blue eyes, healthy looking.

No, like, yeah, but I mean, she had
fleas, so we deflead her.

Rough start.

You might have had a rough start in
life, but it doesn't mean you can go

murdering people.

Cats have a very, very...

Small window between about the ages of
two weeks and nine weeks they learn

everything they're going to learn So for
instance, she would go up to brother or

mom and do this thing, and they would be
like, damn, that hurt, and smack her

back. And then she would then know how
to inhibit that movement and say, well,

I'm just trying to play, so what if I do
this? And then I don't get hit.

So not being around mom, not being
around her brothers and sisters, she's

complete disadvantage.

Also, she sprays my entire apartment.

Oh, she's not fixed. Why is she not
fixed?

Because last time we took her to the
vet, she tried to attack the vet. It's a

pain to take her there. I was surprised
that Larry wasn't spayed. There's no

excuse. Hey, folks, bottom line. Every
time she goes into heat, she stands a

times greater chance of getting ovarian
cancer. She will get out of your house,

she will have a litter, and there will
be another litter of kittens who don't

have a home in this town.

Please spay your cat.

Here are the things. First of all, her
not being spayed means that the spraying

happened. As I was walking up, I came up
to your door and immediately smelled

pee. You can smell it. You can smell
piss right out there. Right. You've got

your cat who's intact.

She then marks the walls and invites
males from all over town to come around.

They come around. Someone marks the
wall. Someone else marks the wall. So we

pee graffiti artists. You got pee
graffiti artists. They can smell her

in here from out there? As if there was
no wall here. Wow. At all.

Wow. Here's the amazing thing is that
they're more nervous about Larry than

are about the wedding.

So this is the time where I get to meet
Larry all by myself. If you guys don't

have any objections, then I'm going to
go hang out with her for a bit.

Good luck. You can enter at your own
risk. I will. It's essential that I

little bit of time alone with every cat.
So I excused myself from Tara and Josh,

and I said, I'm going to go in and meet
Larry. I have no idea what to expect,

but what's the worst that's going to
happen to me?

Unless there's a Tommy gun in that case,
you have no chance.

I actually want to sort of invade her
bubble a little bit because I need to

where that line is between predictable
and unpredictable.

Man, she's got some sharp ones.

I see that her ears are going flat and
her pupils are getting dilated.

Flattening down her ears is a classic
defensive mechanism.

That's a threatened cat.

That's important information for me.

So far it's going exactly how I thought
it was going to go.

I'm going to let you get one more piece
of me.

I want to see how far I can push Larry.

Because you have now gone from being an
unpredictable cat to a predictable cat.

When Larry started to strike out at me,
it was almost like handling a feral cat.

In short order, she turned me into lunch
meat. Well, you guys can come on over

here. What I'd like you to do is show me
how you would start guiding her out of

there.

See, like, the attack is pointless to
me. Like, there's no real, real threat.

She knows who she is. Here, let me try,

So normally what I'd do is I'd just
start slowly start taking things away.

She normally doesn't attack like things.

See, all I know to do is hit her on

There's never, ever an appropriate time
to strike a cat. That being said, I can

empathize with Josh. Because just like
when a cat is threatened, they strike

out, Josh felt threatened, and he struck
out. I have to calm both sides down.

The humans and the cat have to take a
minute, decompress, and breathe.

You have two choices here.

With a cat like Larry, you're either
putting energy into her, or you're

it out. They don't care if you hit them.
All they know is it's energy in.

Don't ever, ever.

Striker. So now, what are we left with?
A sitting bomb.

We are. We're totally left with a kitty
bomb right now.

Larry won the battle. If Jackson can
take his guitar case and fill it up with

some real, real weapons of war, then
maybe he can win the war.

But today, this battle goes to Larry.

I'm working with Larry, an unspayed
female cat who has behavioral and

issues. This is causing a lot of tension
in the home between Josh and Tara. And

at this point, their engagement is on
the line because of it.

Now, I wanted to show Tara and Josh the
wreckage that keeping Larry unspayed was

wreaking all over their house. So I
broke out my black light and started

all of these spots.

Josh, if you don't mind hitting the
light, we're going to see if there's any

damage here.

And we're going to go right over here.

Oh, there it is. Yeah, there's some more
right there.

Most folks think that only male cats
will spray, but that's not true at all.

Female cats will spray for the same
reason that male cats will spray.

Territorial incursions, threats. They
feel like the walls are closing in on

them. They've got cats on all sides of
them. It's their way of saying, this is

my castle, this is my moat.

And so obviously you guys really aren't
using anything that's actually cleaning

it up. You're just sort of doing that.
That's awesome. You make nice little

designs with it. I bet it doesn't taste
good. Finger painting. All right, let's

go take a look at the front door.

Seeing the pee with the black light, it
makes me sick. It's gross.

Out here at the front door. This, I'm
telling you.

is where these tomcats are hidden.

And there it is. Oh, wow.

I thought about getting her spayed, but
I didn't know the extent of what it

would change.

Finding out it could help solve all the
other problems that she had is a huge

thing. And you see how they're hidden
from here and just spraying down here.

Like we were talking about the boys in
the neighborhood saying, hey, baby, here

we are, right?

I'm going to give you the cleaner to
work with.

It's a carbon dioxide -based cleaner.

So far, the most effective cleaning
product that I've found to treat cat

is CO2 charged.

And you guys need to go around this
whole house and clean good, because like

saw before, the way you're cleaning
right now is just sort of smearing it

around. Larry's got a male name, and it
suits her. She marks the wall like a

tomcat. Here's the biggest problem with
Larry. Larry is not spayed.

Larry's not mean.

She's hormonal. All right, guys, it's
homework time. We're going to set you

up where she can get spayed. We're going
to get her knocked out. We're going to

get her fixed.

and we're going to get her back here in
one day. That fast?

Yep. Awesome. And then when that
happens, then we can move forward with

behavioral work. As she's recovering
from surgery, clean up the pee around

house. As long as she comes back here
and smells the same scent that she's

to smelling, she's going to keep going
back to it. So if you clean it all up,

then she's going to have a fresh start
territorially.

Okay. Sounds good. Things are going to
start changing around here for the

they've cleaned all the pee inside the
apartment.

But most importantly, they got Larry
spayed.

Today is Get Larry Fixed Day.

We're hoping that it calms her down,
that it makes her a little more happy. I

just hope Larry doesn't have a flashback
while she's in there.

I don't think this is going to be

She's trying to figure it out. She's

The thing about her is she is just
learning how to communicate.

Spaying Larry is only the first step.
Once her excess hormones are gone.

Then I can get to work on changing her
behavior. When she's stressed, she'll

just revert to those old habits again.
We're a week out of surgery. She's not

exactly feeling like a frisky little
kitten at the moment, but she will.

And the idea is that when she is feeling
like a frisky little kitten, she's

going to be tempted to do the behaviors
that she's been doing for three plus

years. Defending the windows, defending
the doors again. Those are very likely,

I think.

to creep back in, unless you're draining
her energy out in a positive way. This

kind of toy here, where she's going to
go after it like it's prey, is that

natural way. Take that energy and just
go, you know, as opposed to beating up

your legs, beating up on your arms, and
beating up on your house.

So let's move on. Josh and Tara may have
think they fixed everything by fixing

Larry. Surgery can only do so much. I
think now it's time to start challenging

her again. Guys, in order to push
forward, I want to get her walking.

Our goal is very doable.

I just want her walking down the stairs
and around the courtyard a little bit. I

want her to go out there to get that
energy to come out in a constructive

instead of a destructive way.

Jackson gave Larry a bulletproof vest to
wear. And we have to go walk Larry like

a dog. It'll be interesting to see how
long it takes us to get Larry in the

in the first place.

What's up? The last homework that I gave
Tara and Josh was getting Larry out

here in the vest on a leash.

times has she actually been on it

Well, we've been trying to get her in
the harness for two days, and we haven't

been able to without having a real
fight.

I don't think this is going to work out.

Today was the first day we were able to
get her in it. I mean, the fact that you

actually got her in the harness and that
she's not completely freaking out.

Pretty amazing.

She's definitely a bush dweller. I put
cats in two different categories.

They're either tree dwellers, which
means they just like to explore vertical

spaces, or they're bush dwellers, which
means they'd like to have all four feet

on the ground. Yeah, she's in the bush.
So this morning we were walking Larry

and she jumped into the bushes. Now
initially my first thought process is

going back to the flashback.

Then we started realizing that she was
actually just feeling the place out. She

was trying to be comfortable outside.

Now she's a flower child.

Now you see how she's sniffing the door?

With her being spayed, I guarantee the
boys aren't coming around the way they

used to. I smell apartment. I don't
smell pee. Really, it smells good.

Yeah, exactly.

So that's a big, big plus.

Great work.

Jackson noticed that there was no smell.
The pee smell was non -existent.

For the rubber to meet the road on this
one, even though the smell is a ton

better. I just want to make sure that
maybe there's something that you guys

aren't seeing in terms of new spots.

now this is a very clean stove. She has
stopped spraying completely.

One thing I noticed over here, we've got
a microwave that is not a hiding place

anymore. She really caused a scene last

I'm Alan, and we met at a gym.

And recently married in May.

I'm a Pilates instructor and work from

And I'm a personal trainer. I work in
the gym.

Our relationship is great.

But the one thing we fight over is Ruby.

I teach Pilates in my living room, and I
have to get the cat and put her in the

bedroom so I can do my job.

Every morning, I have to chase her
around the house and get her to go into

terrified of Ruby.

She draws blood.

And I'm afraid she's going to attack one

And there's no possible way that I can
even hold her.

Ruby and me fight every day, and it's
brutal.

And usually she wins.

We adopted Ruby from a shelter, and she
has hated me from the beginning.

was abused by the other people that
owned her. And I think it was a woman.

And that's the reason why she liked men
and not women.

And she loves Alan.

Yeah, she's kind to me. I can pet her. I
can lift her. And she bites and

scratches heaven.

And it's always been like that.

Alan's funny. He treats her like a
princess.

Guilty.

Ellen doesn't realize how bad it is. You
know what actually the worst thing that

she's done? Is that she made us fight.
Because it's us arguing about what to do

with her. I just really want Ruby to
love me.

I feel like I'm being rejected all the
time. We did all the tests with the vet

and he was like, you know, she's just a
little... And that was when he first

gave us Prozac.

I am not a believer in the Prozac. So we
stopped that.

We might not know it right now, but
there's another way.

Sometimes when I watch videos of my
clients, it just makes me want to turn

This is one of those cases where it's
just so hard to watch Heather get

consistently hurt by Ruby. And every
action she takes is met with violence.

The only problem is that she has this
cat that jumps on the table sometimes,

attack my hands or scratch me or bite

distracting.

well? That's a fear. When she's in the

No. She's all over the equipment and all
over them, and every single time I try

to get her into the other room, she
attacks me, she growls, she hisses. I

it's just a matter of time before she
really hits, like, you know, a vein.

So whether or not someone's allergic or
not...

She's never out here. I cover all the
beds up so she doesn't scratch them, and

she's already ruined them all, and
they're $9 ,500.

So in your perfect world, she would
never be on this.

Perfect world, Ruby would never be on
it. I would love if she didn't have to

leave here for every client. If we found
a place that she would stay on other

than here, it would be amazing to not
have to forcibly relocate her every

So do you actually feel that Ruby's
really not that big a deal?

Because he can manage it. Yeah, because
I can manage it. So I don't really get

the full effect of what she has to go
through.

My first experience with Ruby was a
pretty dicey one, and as soon as I

in this house is that Ruby is literally

affecting Heather's ability to do her

I think the main thing that Heather's
bringing to this party is the fear.

And Ruby says, I'll take that fear and

end of the day and it's all Ruby.

I never had an idea until what I'd seen
Heather go through today that it was

this bad.

So I do carry some resentment with him
with that.

I actually think that underneath the
surface, that Heather has some

jealousy about Alan and Ruby's
relationship.

What I'm seeing is less of a brain issue
and more of a territorial issue.

I think that she's feeling...

somewhat minimized and threatened and
because of that she lashes out

when you try to remove her from the main
piece of territory sure she's claiming

the desk she's claiming the pilates
machine she's claiming the bed these are

places that are vertical if you look
around there's no other place in this

that's vertical for her to claim we have
to give her spaces to say i own this

and now i can look over at my domain
safely

What I am going to give you in terms of
homework is based around that theory.

about how we can get her up off the

It's definitely not going to be solved
in a minute. There's some work that's

going to have to be done and some
changes to be made, but I get worried

What I'm hoping to see on my second
visit with Heather and Alan is a little

fear from Heather when she's approaching
the cat. My main concern is to make

sure that Heather's business is actually
doing a little bit better than it was

last time, because I know that because
of Ruby, business was a little bit on

decline. And also, I just want to see
that the space itself is more Ruby

-friendly, so that she can move around
it without interacting as closely with

the clients as she was last time. So
let's not waste any time. I am psyched.

impressive was that Heather's energy

For me, the reason why it was so scary,
too, was that she was doing so well, and

then out of nowhere, she just kind of
attacked this lady and lost a client

We're always going to have setbacks.

Heather's clients, and that was a little

concerning.

completely different. At that moment,

she's open, she's receptive. You become
open and receptive. You guys have this

beautiful little kumbaya moment
together.

And then you go, scoop, and she's out.
It was absolutely perfect and a game

changer in terms of your relationship
with her. So, wonderful work there.

We had some other things that obviously
I'm sure you're not too crazy about,

which is what we found on our spy cam in
the middle of the night, which is that

this thing is just like her, still like
her playground.

There was that one moment where she
looked at the camera. She's like, oh,

you got me, you know.

That has to end, obviously. We're
worried about nails going through the

material. Very expensive piece of
machinery.

Okay. So I went out and came back with a
really special thing, which I was

really happy about. I had this guy
design this Pilates bed for a cat.

What I figured was that our girlfriend
was just a little jealous.

and needed her own little Pilates bed.

So this is now Ruby's bed.

I was, like, blown away. Like, I was
speechless, but I didn't even know what

think. I was like, of course he came up
with the best. Of course, it's perfect.

This is going to be her go -to spot.

This will not be her go -to spot.

My philosophy is that any time we want
to say no to somebody, we want to say

right behind it.

So any time that I say, listen, this is
totally off limits, I'm going to say

that this is...

Fair game. That's what we're hoping for.

So let me go back a minute to the
concept of space and the flow of space

and the way a cat perceives space. I
don't know if you guys saw it, but I did

back around the litter boxes where she
cornered herself.

She got this panic look on her face
immediately.

Every time she's cornered herself, we
got problems.

So that means in here, no corners.

I want to make it so this whole room has
no dead ends.

If I'm Ruby and I go, I need to
investigate this room.

Like you said, she gets to the top of
this.

Where does she go from here?

Absolutely no place. There's floor.

So now, break over here for a second.

We take a look at these guys.

What if the tree was here?

So again, we have the flow. Up the
stairs, up the stairs, and now I'm at

of my tree looking out the window, and
then I can go back down again.

And then we've created flow.

That's the flow in this room that I'm
just now seeing. It's just kind of

up. Remember to video.

We'll keep the spy cams going, and we
will get to the homestretch on this one,

okay? Alan and Heather's homework for
the next couple weeks, kind of simple. I

need them to work on that room, flow
through the space, no corners, because

Ruby, when cornered, will lash out every
single time.

Also, I want to see more concentration
on how you address her, both physically

and with words. If Heather doesn't do
her homework this week, her business is

trouble.

I'm about to go in for my last visit
with Heather now, and I'm just hoping,

hoping that what I wanted from the get
-go has been realized. Because honestly,

the concept of Heather losing her career
because of a cat is just unfathomable.

Before, my clients didn't want Ruby in
the room with them. They just wanted her

to be in the bedroom away from them. And
now I'm completely comfortable with

Ruby being in the same room with my
clients.

So the last time I was here, one of the
most important things that I told

Heather and Alan was that I wanted Ruby
to know that when she walked into the

room, the focus wasn't the big Pilates
bed.

So the only thing that we need to deal
with is I just want to make sure the

space is perfect.

So let's just take a look at your setup
here. Okay, cool.

Let's just start with this.

So we got big Pilates bed.

She's not doing the middle of the night
big Pilates surging anymore, is she? No.

When you're having a session, where does
she tend to hang out the most?

She's either on this or she's on her
bed.

Clients, they love the Pilates bed.

They think it's the cutest thing ever.

I'll give you guys props for the flow in
here because this is beautiful.

You've got her Pilates bed going to the
clouds, up to the clouds, here to watch

birds, down again, and out.

The flow that goes through this room
now, I literally can't change a thing in

here. And your clients are good.

Yeah, they love her. They love it. It is
completely night and day. They're like,

where's Ruby?

Really? Yeah.

She knows that when she starts a
session, that Ruby will sit on her bed,

that the client will go to the big bed,
and there's no competition for space

anymore. It's done.

Before, I had to hide Ruby from my
clients, and now they actually,

They want to see her. They want her to
come out and be with them.

I'm proud of her.

I am, too. She's now a welcome part of
the Pilates experience.

It's nice, though. It makes her a lot
more relaxed. The level of tension that

you were carrying about picking her up,
the cat bomb position, you know, where

you're carrying her like that.

And I just want to make sure that that's
okay at this point. Totally fine. The

simple bottom line to the success that
we're seeing today is playing into the

fact that cats are territorial. And Ruby
is no different. Ruby needed to have a

place of ownership. And now she owns...

the outside of that entire room. And
that's amazing to see because it works.

I'm just adoring what I'm seeing right
now. When I was spending a little bit of

time with Ruby today, the first thing
that struck me was the relaxation in her

face. There's a sweetness to her that I
didn't see before. She was grouchy. She

was surly. She was mean.

And now there's just a relaxation. I
could read on her as clearly as I could

read it on a human.

I'm just ecstatic the fact that I don't
have to worry about losing clients or my

job. It just makes me feel, like,
blessed.

There was a point where she was afraid
to bring people over to the house. Or if

she could have people to the house, she
would have to get herself carved up by

her cat in order to get her sessions
underway.

The relationship now between Ruby and
Heather is just...

It's unbelievable.

She just climbed right on top of me. You
started to do this? Started doing my

little meeting.

Has Ruby ever laid on my stomach before?

Ruby's never laid on your stomach
before. Ever, ever, ever. She won't even

next to me.

It was just like, you do love me.

You do. I was so excited.

This is about changing a relationship.
These guys really love Ruby to a degree

that they're willing to look at
themselves and the way they approach

space. And these are the results.
They're beautiful.

It's good to know that things could
change for the better.

Seeing Ruby and Heather having a
relationship that Ruby and I have is

That is worth its weight in gold.

This whole experience has definitely
made me and Alan's relationship stronger

and better.

There's no argument about Ruby anymore.

It was simple things that we didn't know
about, to be honest, that really paid

off. Jackson, thank you. His
attentiveness, his knowledge, the gifts

given us and tools were just a blessing,
absolute blessing.
