When you take a control freak...

I always call myself a control freak,
but in a nice way.

When you take someone
that likes to be in control

and you put them in a situation
which is out of their control,

it makes them feel very uncomfortable.

So much of my life
has been out of my control.

The bullying, and then, later,

what was being written about me,
said about me.

There are so many things we can't control.

And on show day, that makes me nervous.

Now everything is looking
better and better.

Everything is being settled everywhere.

We turned down the candles
so it doesn't take the rain, in case.

- We have the goose.
- Oh my God, it looks amazing.

It's gonna be good. It's gonna be good.

Projection's square and until the ceiling.
Everything's looking good.

This weather is giving me more anxiety
than the weather on my wedding day.

I mean, it did rain on my wedding day.
It cannot rain today.

My team have banned me
from checking the weather.

Walking into this venue today,

you get a sense of the scale
of the ambition that you have.

It's been a long road, right?

I remember when you did
those intimate presentations in New York.

- What's in your head? What's the vision?
- I've been doing this for about 17 years.

The business has been through
an enormous amount.

And as an independent brand,

what we're achieving
is something I'm very proud of.

Just think of all the good things
that come from cold weather.

They're gonna have
very taught skin, aren't they?

And very firm nipples.

I hope Harper brought a coat. Or a jacket.

There's an enormous amount of pressure.

I need this to be a big success.

This business is everything to me.

It's absolutely who I am.

But it's been a hell of a journey.

I almost lost everything.

And that was a dark, dark time.

I used to cry
before I went to work every day

because I just... I felt like a firefighter.

Let's talk about the Beckhams now.

- Always making headlines, but...
- Royalty of another kind.

What I find interesting about this
is the phrasing,

that "hubby" has bailed her out,
her business out.

- Can you explain this?
- So...

We were tens of millions in the red.

Yes, I'm going home to my husband,

but I'm going home
to my business partner as well.

And so I would talk to him about it.

I had to. He was invested.

And I hated it. I absolutely hated it.

We both sat there,
and we looked at... what I'd invested.

And I think part of that conversation
broke my heart

because Victoria is a proud woman.

When we met, she was a lot richer than me.

She actually bought
our first house in Hertfordshire,

known as Beckingham Palace.

So for her to have to come to me and say,

"Can I have some... We need some more money.
The business needs more money,"

that was hard for both of us.

Because I didn't have the money
to keep doing this.

And eventually, I was like,
"This cannot continue."

The entire house was crashing down.

I was losing my business.

I needed outside investment.

I needed someone to help me.

Victoria was not looking for

a financial partner
that would just put money.

She needed a partner
that knew the business,

understood her dream,

and was capable of making it happen.

When I looked at the business,
talked to people,

talked to people outside of the business,

I realized this was
a very, very difficult situation.

It was a disaster.

We started to look at the press.

Horrible.

They were like,
"This is the worst business ever."

Then you look at the book
and you look at the numbers.

Losses, losses, losses, losses.

Never made a profit.

Frankly, I had never seen something
as hard as that to fix.

When I met David Belhassen,

I knew that my dream
would be for him to invest in my business.

But it's like having an enormous ship
that has set sail,

and you've gotta turn
the whole bloody thing around.

And I didn't know
if he was up for that challenge.

And that was really stressful for me
'cause I was...

I really was desperate,

not just for the money

but everything else
that he could bring to the table.

I never invest in something
I don't feel like is right. I don't do it.

So after we closed the books,

I said, "We're not gonna do it.
Forget it. No way."

I felt heartbroken,
absolutely heartbroken,

because it's taken so long
to get to this point.

So I was to announce to the team,
to everyone, that,

"Sorry, we decided not to do it."

And then I go out with my wife
on the Saturday night,

and I see her. Stunning.

And I said, you know,
"What are you wearing?"

"Victoria Beckham."

I said, "Are you buying
a lot of Victoria Beckham?"

And she said, "Tons.
I love it. It's amazing."

And the flame lit there.
It became like a fire.

And on Monday, I gathered the team,
and we say, "We have to do it."

"If we fail, we fail."

So we signed.

And I remember she was very emotional,

and she told me, "I won't let you down."

I was never afraid
to put the hard work in,

but I had no idea how painful it would be.

- You look amazing.
- Thank you.

You look so beautiful. Are you happy?

You've done your hair and makeup so nice.
You both look gorgeous.

Cold.

Victoria, in show mode,
she's obviously very focused.

She's going over the collection,
over the looks,

I've never seen my wife flustered.

This year was different.

And I could tell she was like,

Felice fell off her bike.

When I became partners with Victoria,

the business was
in a very, very challenging situation.

So I needed to understand,

is she really capable
of accepting what had to happen?

For years, she had people telling her
what she wanted to hear.

I remember one of the expenses
was the office plants.

'Cause she loves plants.

And it was costing, like, 70,000 a year.

And then there was someone
who was coming to water the plants

for 15,000... a year.

And that's only the beginning.

So I went to her, and I decided to just
tell the truth, exactly the way it is.

And I didn't know how she would react.

And I said, "Victoria,
we have to change everything,

restructure the business,
and that's gonna be painful."

And when I finished, she just listened,
and she left a little silence.

I took it on the chin.

And it was hard,
you know, hearing those things.

I hadn't been to business school.

I'd come from an entertainment background.

We were an entertainment company

that had never ever, ever worked
in fashion before.

I didn't realize it at the time,

but the waste was mind-blowing.

I mean, I had 15 different linings
for the insides of the outerwear.

People thought that I was used to
getting the best and getting everything.

Bizarre things, like flying chairs
from one side of the world to the other.

I hear it now, and I'm horrified.

But I allowed that to happen.

And I think part of the problem

was people were really afraid
to tell me no.

Why?

I think, probably,

there's a power, if I'm being honest.

The power of celebrity.

- Thank you, Victoria.
- Thank you.

People thought
that I wasn't used to hearing "no."

I'll hold my hands up and be accountable
for things that I have done

that I should have done
and could have done differently.

And I was in debt.

There was a lot I had to change.

I realized I'd lost my way.

One of the big problems we'd identified

is that her DNA
was fading away in the brand.

It was no longer
becoming Victoria Beckham.

It was becoming something else.

I needed to put Victoria Beckham
back into Victoria Beckham.

And then, one day, I had an idea.

I phoned Juergen Teller,

and I said, "Juergen, I wanna recreate
the Marc Jacobs campaign."

Normally, I don't repeat myself.
I rather would do something new.

But it was sort of special
because of... it was her idea

and it's her own label.

When he shot me ten years before,

the laugh was on me.

But I wanted to reclaim that image
for myself.

I wanted to say something with that photo.

She took control.

And people got it.
It's fun. It's nice. But it was literal.

She was getting back in it,
working the product to death,

working her vision,
what she was all about.

The chicness, the glam.

I was beginning
to step up to the challenge,

to lead my business,

and I wanted to do more.

So I went back to something that I knew.

This really is me working from home.

I've got my technical makeup mirror.

And just wanting to share with you,

and really just showing you
what I'm wearing, makeup-wise, every day.

Here we go, ladies.

When I launched Beauty,
I knew what I wanted to create

because I feel like I've spent
half my life in the makeup chair.

So I take the bushy end,

and I'm going to put it
in this darker color.

When I was in the Spice Girls,
I was in that glam chair all the time.

Something that people
really associated with me

was that smoky eye.

So I really wanted to say,

"This is how I do it.
If I can do it, you can do it."

I use just one product
to create my smoky eye.

That one product...

I trusted my instinct.

I allowed people to see the real me.

You have to excuse
the fact this filming is not ideal.

I'm not great at this.

I remember waiting
to see what the reaction was gonna be.

Oh my God.

And it was incredible.

The minute that Beauty was a success,

to have something
that was finally working...

It was good to meet you.
Love your hair. Gorgeous.

...that made me believe in myself.

But I knew that I had to keep going...

...because the fashion business
was still struggling.

I don't know what we're gonna do.
The girls spend two hours,

three hours, four hours
in hair and makeup.

They're wearing high-heeled shoes,

they're wearing garments
that can't be getting wet,

and we've gotta get them from the house
into the covered environment.

In any business,
an entrepreneur puts everything there is

in his or her personality
into the business.

They know that success
is about perseverance.

You have to sort of keep going,
keeping on, keeping on, keeping on.

If you don't have that in you,
being able to really persevere, nonstop,

the only outcome is failure.

I've worked hard
to earn my place in this industry,

and I don't wanna lose
everything that I built.

Fuck this.

We're doing this show, no matter what.

Everyone, we're starting
the rehearsal. Please clear the runway.

Let's put the shoes on, and someone hold
the girls' hands down the stairs.

I'm just worried
that if you don't have a run-through,

it's gonna be hard

There's no guarantee
it's all gonna be okay.

That worries me
because I do like to be in control.

But I really try to not project that

because then the whole house of cards
will just come down.

It's incredible how much work it is

to put together a real collection
and a show.

It's six months of inspiration boards,
of fittings, of choosing fabrics.

And people can tell whether the person
who was designing that piece of clothing

loved it and was into it
and was excited about it,

or whether it was designed
by a merchandiser

and really doesn't have any soul.

To see Victoria evolve from the beginning,

when she had this idea of, like,
"I might do this brand,"

to the first show in New York...

to now.

I mean, I have never seen Victoria
pull off something this big.

In the journey of a creative person,

every decision you take
is what make you who you are.

In the five years I worked with Victoria,
my job was like,

"Okay, let's feed the roots all the time
for you to grow."

If she wants to become a fashion designer,

you have to be true to yourself
for every moment of that process.

I wanted her to find that

because following your dreams
is to try to find yourself.

So then the runway.
