in the fashion industry.

The fashion industry didn't like her.

The industry can be a little snobbish.

We wanted to cross that line.

You want to be taken seriously.

I knew that to start
this new chapter of my life,

I had to change.

Strip the other personas away.

You know, I buried those boobs
in Baden-Baden.

I became a simpler,
more elegant version of myself.

And I went to work.

From the top, where she is,

I had to bring her
back to the bottom to learn.

He really challenged me.

If you want to be a designer,
you have to know who you are.

Who was the customer of Victoria?

It's women who wanted to be like her.

She was the product.

Ultimately, it really was
about what I couldn't find.

I wanted the perfect dress,

and I couldn't find
what I was looking for.

but I did start
by draping on myself, you know?

We didn't have the budgets
to have fit models,

so I used my own body.

with Roland, and just bits of fabric.

A dress is that little movement

He just kept saying, "Perfect the dress."

He made me question everything,
every decision that I made.

I used to cry a lot.

How do you make it yours?

He gave me the tools
that I needed to create.

I was doing what I finally wanted to do.

We didn't know
if she was going to succeed,

but she was ready for this challenge.

I didn't need to say
"Hey, look at me" anymore.

This creative outlet,
that can do the talking.

This is the first time
I'm showing as a house

with fashion and beauty
and fragrance all together.

It's definitely the most stressful show
we've ever done.

Stressful!

There's so much that could go wrong.

Are you going to attach it at the bottom?

I've been cross-questioning
every single decision in my head.

- So we have four there.
- Okay.

- One, two, three of those.
- Yes.

Everything has to be perfect.

It's gotta be best in class
before I put it out there,

so there's never any compromise.

And I've spent years
building this foundation.

When I stepped into the fashion industry,
I had a lot of naivety.

I remember thinking,

"Oh, she has no idea what she's in for."

I first became aware of Victoria
in the mid-'90s.

I did know that she loved Gucci
because she was photographed all the time.

So I was always happy
when I saw her photographed in my clothes.

David as well.

I never know what to wear.

Yeah, it must be
really hard for you, Victoria,

you know, trying to decide whether to wear
the little Gucci dress,

the little Gucci dress,

or the little Gucci dress.

Exactly.

I remember when I first heard

that Victoria was going to start
her own fashion label.

And I wanted to call her and say,

"Why? Why would you do this?"

"Do you understand
this business is so tough?"

She has to show to people,
demonstrate to people, that she had it,

and people are not easy to recognize that.

If you are a pop star,
you're gonna be a pop star forever.

I thought she was very, very brave.

I think a lot of people
didn't take it seriously.

I think a lot of people thought, "Okay,
Victoria Beckham's starting a collection."

"Someone else will probably design it.
She'll stick her name on it."

"Won't be very serious."

And everybody warning her,
"You will not be accepted."

"Oh, here comes another celebrity
wanting to be a fashion person."

Everybody was coming out with a line.

Jessica Simpson had a line,
and Paris Hilton had a line.

The likelihood
that I was going to become successful

was very, very slim,

but I really didn't listen to that.

That fueled me, to be completely honest.

So in 2008,

I decided to show my first collection.

I didn't do a big fashion show
and come out to dry ice.

I was showing ten dresses
in a hotel suite.

And even though David helped me
set up this business, financially,

he didn't come to the show.

I didn't want celebrities there

because I didn't want it
to be about celebrity.

I was really, really scared.

It's almost like
you're standing in a room naked.

You feel vulnerable.

The fear of being rejected
by that industry was there.

Journalists,
they didn't really say very much,

and they left, and I'd be sitting there
thinking, "Did they like it?"

I knew what the expectation
of every person is going to be.

He said, "What's the worst
that can happen?"

To fall flat on your face.

I remember
the first review coming through.

It was amazing.

I was absolutely blown away
by the response.

The press was really,
"Oh, wow. Oh... Oh, wow."

My PR at the time said,
"You're not gonna believe this."

It was Madonna in W Magazine
wearing one of my dresses.

I didn't think in my wildest dreams
that was gonna happen.

I said, "One show is not enough."

"I can't give you a diploma for that,"
you know?

"It's just the beginning."
She's just scratched a bit the surface,

and... and, uh... and now the next one.

Morning.

- How's your house coming along?
- I have, like, turkeys.

You have turkeys? We've got chickens.

I have to tell David
he should get some turkeys

'cause you know he's got lots of animals.

I was never the young girl,
growing up, that dreamt of getting married

and dreamt of being a mum.

It wasn't until I met David
that those things even occurred to me.

I was in the Spice Girls
when I got pregnant with Brooklyn.

I was so excited to be pregnant.

It was August, in Miami.

I was a couple of months pregnant.
It was so hot.

I was in a PVC catsuit.

I had a bucket on the side of the stage

that I would have to
just keep running offstage

and, like, being sick in
because I had such bad morning sickness.

And my PVC catsuit
was having to be let out on a daily basis

'cause I was... I was growing.

I remember, I used to turn around
to the tour director and say,

"I just can't go on,"

and he'd say to me,

"There's only 102 shows left to do."

The determination that she has...

that comes from her parents.

We've built and planted
every single thing in this garden.

Every... Everything.

So you can see Tony stopped work
when you arrived.

My parents still live
in the house that I grew up in.

When they bought that house,
it was a shell.

My dad built it himself.

He had this dream, and he was gonna do
everything that he could

to create the perfect living environment
for his family.

It had everything that I wanted

because I could see
that I could do things with it.

- Didn't have everything I wanted.
- No. No.

I wanted a cooker and to be able
to turn the taps on and off.

Yeah. Yeah. It was in a terrible state.

Tony, what kind of business did you have?

- Electrical wholesaling.
- Electrical wholesaling.

The children have always been a big part,
weren't they, of what you did.

They have, yes. Yeah.

My dad started with nothing.

He used to sit me
and my brother and sister

in, like, a little production line.

We would build things.

Plugs and electrical things.

My mum put us all in the back of the van
in our pajamas.

My dad would drive around,
delivering these things that we'd built.

- Lights and...
- Cable and stuff.

- Anything like that.
- It wasn't domestic stuff.

But Tony's always had
an amazing work ethic.

Yeah, I was very strict, to myself.

Dad worked so, so hard,

and he expected me to do the same.

I was with my mum and dad the other night,

and we were talking about
when I was at theater school

and when I desperately wanted
to be a dancer.

My mum and dad remortgaged their house

so I could go to theater school.

And I was so aware of that.

Aware of the responsibility I had
to work really hard.

But I wasn't ever the best.

I wasn't the best dancer, the best singer.

I didn't look like
a lot of the other girls.

That's where I started getting
a lot of criticism

about my appearance, my weight.

And I remember the principal
of the theater school saying to me,

you know, "At the end of the show,
we're gonna just fly you girls in."

"You girls can just be flown in."

Meaning that we weren't, sort of,

looking as aesthetically pleasing
as some of the others.

"We'll just fly you in the back."

Yeah, I mean...

On one occasion where we thought
she was doing really, really well,

and then when we went
to see her do something,

she was put right at the back, wasn't she?

- Yeah.
- If you remember that.

Told, "You're overweight.
You'll be in the back."

Obviously it used to upset her.

But it must... it must affect you

because that's a very silly thing to say
to a young person, isn't it? "You're fat."

I remember phoning my mum.
I was crying. "I wanna come home."

And my mum said, "Come home."

"We'll go to Lakeside,
and we'll buy a new pair of shoes,"

and then my dad
would come on the phone, and he'd say...

- "Stay there. Put up with it, and--"
- "And show them all."

"You stay there. You work hard."

And that ultimately set her up for life.

As we speak,
I'm receiving tons of messages.

My WhatsApp is burning.

Yeah, it's been raining cats and dogs
for the last few days,

and I, obviously, am checking
the weather forecast every hour.

Right now I'm trying to find
a lot of solutions

so the show doesn't look like
a living nightmare.

If ever there was a season we could do
something different with hair, this is it.

Because a lot of the girls have haircuts,

you can really lean into
that individuality a little bit.

That'd be really nice.
You know it's outside?

- We do have... We do have a cover.

But obviously, you could be dealing
with a damp, sort of, humidity.

- Right.

- Which is not making your job easy.

But it's just the reality of
"don't know what weather's gonna be like."

I had my heart set
on an outdoors show space

because I was convinced
it was gonna still be hot

on 27th September in Paris.

We're going to this
amazing castle next to Paris

that has never received any show before.

So, basically, the structure is not ready
to welcome all these guests.

It's crazy.
It's getting worse and worse every day.

This beautiful path is now covered by mud,

which is obviously not acceptable
for the guests we're gonna host.

I knew her as a Spice Girl,

and we admired her style
and her sense of commitment to fashion,

but most of the celebrities
who get involved in our world

are not true designers.

I thought maybe this was a hobby.

I didn't quite believe it.

Well, we would invite her every season,

but she didn't show up.

It's either this
or it's two different colors.

because I prefer the fit.

this knee-jerk reaction

anytime a camera comes up,

that next time there's a strong breeze,

her neck gets stuck in that position

so she can't eat anything
or take any fluids

and eventually starves to death

so that her Gucci twinset suit
falls off her

and she expires.

People felt it was okay
to criticize a woman

for her weight, for what she's doing,

for what she's wearing.

There were a lot of things happening
in TV then that won't happen now.

That can't happen now.

I was weighed on national television
when Brooklyn was six months old.

"Get on those scales," on television.
"Have you lost the weight?" You know?

And we laugh about it and we joke about it
when we're on television,

but I was really, really young.

And that hurts.

My Victoria that I knew
sits at home in a tracksuit,

smiling, laughing, having a glass of wine.

That started to go purely because
the criticism that she was getting.

I really started to doubt myself
and not like myself,

you know, because I let it affect me.

I didn't know what I saw
when I looked in the mirror.

Was I fat? Was I thin? I... I don't know.

You lose all sense of reality.

I was just very critical of myself.
I didn't like what I saw.

I've been everything from "Porky Posh"
to "Skinny Posh."

I mean, you know,
it's... it's been a lot, and that's hard.

I had no control
over what was being written about me,

pictures that were being taken,

and I suppose
I wanted to control that, you know?

I could control it with the clothing.
I could control...

I could control my weight.

And I was controlling it
in an incredibly unhealthy way.

When you have an eating disorder,
you become very good at lying.

And I was never honest about it
with my parents.

I never talked about it publicly.

It really affects you

when you're being told, constantly,
you're not good enough.

And I suppose that's been with me
my whole life.

Was fashion something
you and Victoria always bonded over?

Oh God, no.
Oh my God, we never bonded over fashion.

I could care less about fashion.

She's taught me a lot about fashion,
you know?

If it was up to me,
I'd wear so much jewelry,

I'd look like a Christmas tree.

And she's like,
"You know, you really should wear less."

"Just less."

We were in LA.

The boys were at school,
and I was pregnant with Harper.

It took years and years,

but things started to change,

and things were going well.

and how much fun it was.

So I got curious.

It doesn't so much as bore me as anger me.

It's a huge deal.

that totally proved us wrong.

It was clear
that there was a vision there,

there was a point of view for people
to recognize what she stands for,

and she achieved it with grace
and with charm and with humility.

It was a real pinch-me moment.

I couldn't believe it.

She's actually, really, to be taken
as a serious designer, which she is.

The fact that people are accepting me
is really exciting.

There were more and more people
we had to invite to the presentations,

so, naturally, we went from presentations

into the big show
at the public library in New York.

I remember,
I was still breastfeeding Harper.
