Being in a place abandoned like this...
...it makes you think about every horror movie
you've ever seen.
That's how I feel right now.
If I have to sleep in one of these rundown buildings...
I don't know if I'd ever go home.
It's just scary.
But one good thing about Adak
is we have a McDonald's.
I'm a Burger King man myself,
but it's pretty cool we have a McDonald's out at Adak.
In the early 1940s, the US military created
this huge military base out at Adak.
And after World War II ended,
troops started pulling out and it had a smaller presence.
And then the crab industry came in.
My Grandpa Lee first came to Adak
when he was 12 years old.
He was one of the pioneers.
It's my hope that the very beginning,
the very starting of our family empire
is where I can grow a future.
Oh, oh!
That's not very good.
That's not gonna do it.
OK.
Not looking good.
No, that's not very good.
They're not coming up like we were hoping.
I really don't know what I'm gonna do here.
They gotta go back in the water someplace.
The problem is you don't wanna get too spread out
because it just takes so much time gathering everything.
I mean, everything's about the expense, you know,
because the price of fuel has gone up so much.
Time is money, right?
Aleutian Lady.
That's him over there.
I wonder what he's up to.
Son of a bitch!
What is this?
No frickin' bueno.
This is ugly.
This is ugly, ugly.
First count or this count?
These numbers suck, Rick.
Hey, Sig, how you doing, man?
- Yeah. - Yes, I'm not seeing much.
So I just, I'm curious what, you know, if you've got
anything to share, 'cause this is pretty pitiful so far.
I mean, it's nothing exciting.
A lot of blank pots, a couple of tens, and...
Argh!
You know, they've gotta be around somewhere.
So what about your grandpa?
He had a place out in Adak, didn't he?
I mean, he's gotta know something.
Yeah, my grandpa's owned it for a long time,
and I don't think anybody's been there for a couple decades.
Maybe he's got some old information
that you can dig up. Who knows?
...see what we come up with, so if I come up with something,
you come up with something, we can always share that info,
that data if you want.
...find out anything, and we'll go from there.
Good luck, I know you gotta do a little digging,
but yeah, who knows what you'll run into.
All right, Sig. Thank you, man.
Do you really think it's a good idea
to go in a partnership with Sig?
No, no, I don't really trust him.
But right now, Sig had a good idea to see
if there's anything on Adak.
'Cause, if there is anything, it's well worth looking at.
Hey, even if I get a little bit, I'll still get something.
Rick, he's getting information.
But in the meantime,
we gotta see what we can do about finding some crab.
I'm just gonna run these up the hill
and cover some ground, cover some depths.
See how we do.
Come on, crab! Come on, crab!
Oh, ah!
Whoa!
Whoo-hoo!
I got it, I got it.
Another whale, there's a lot of whales right here.
Oh, my gosh.
- Right there. - Oh, oh, my gosh.
- See the little babies? - Oh, my gosh.
He's right here.
Whales are smart. I'm too slow.
They're not gonna let me hit 'em.
Well, keep hauling ass for us.
We ain't got no time.
I got really old crab on board.
We have to be in in 22 hours.
If we don't make our offload, we get put in the back
of the list, you lose a half a million dollars
of crab if it takes too long to offload.
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
Wow!
Wow!
Oh!
Look at that pot.
- Damn! - Definitely above 80!
Just incredible how big these crab are.
We're gonna have a 10-pound average for sure.
Ha, ha, ha
Yeah, baby. Why not?
All right.
On this boat, we have a tradition.
I got my safety glasses on.
OK, stand back.
- Oh! - Rocket Man!
Whoo! Ha, ha, one more.
All right.
Fire extinguisher.
Oh, baby.
...at home.
All right, right now, gotta go as fast as this boat can go
all the way to the damn delivery.
21 hours and 45 minutes. It's gonna be close.
OK, Neal. I just need a little nap, man.
I've just been up too long, brother.
Thank you. Thank you.
- Standing by for you, brother. - Hey!
Johnny!
What the [bleep], man.
They're having me turn around. I'm gonna be later now.
The Coast Guard wants to check all my permits.
They come down and do a complete safety check on your boat.
They're here to keep us safe but...
they're gonna mess around here for two, or three or four hours.
Just when I thought I was gonna be on time, now I'm not.
Got the lights on.
Oh, my God!
This is-- this is not good.
This is not good at all.
Four, four, four, four...
Three go, stand by, stand by.
Borderline ridiculous.
That's all, my permits are right there.
I said, "Are you guys sure you need to do this right now?"
They said, "Yes, we-- need to, for sure, we need
to do right now, so."
Now we just have a delay, so.
I'm gonna be late for my delivery.
Bla, la, la, la, la.
All right, roll it back up for you guys.
- All right, Captain. - Yes.
We're just gonna grab our stuff, and then we'll make
our way down there. - Get you off safely.
Thank you.
Three, three, four, four.
Let me know
Come about two feet, two feet...
Jump, jump, jump.
One more. Four feet.
It's only been upward hill.
We're having such a good season,
it's gonna end on this kind of note.
We're gonna be four hours late for the cannery.
Unless I can make up the time on the way to town,
maybe we can make eight and a half
with the wind behind us.
What are you guys doing?
Turn around.
OK.
Neal MacGyver.
It looks like they're...
it's like they're putting up a sail or something.
Whoa! [bleep]
I've never seen that before.
...it helps even the eighth of a knot,
it's gonna help save an hour.
You never know.
Seal the Deal Neal,
don't ever go anywhere without Seal the Deal Neal.
Roger!
Everything that the old man was doing was all west.
I remember some of these hot spots,
but I don't know exactly...
but he had everything marked on here.
I see a couple of valleys, I wanna play with.
I mean, when you look...
it's pretty...
I mean, it's talking to me.
It's definitely, definitely hinting...
...and, we're gonna fire some off.
Roger!
And in the meantime,
hopefully Rick will come up with something.
My grandpa Lee, I'm here because I was talking to him,
and he thinks he has some of his old charts and log books.
I can't tell the difference between these places.
Hey, Grandma, how are you doing?
How's Grandpa doing? Is he able to talk right now?
I'm out here in Adak.
Hey, Grandpa Lee.
What was the house number again?
I'm driving to our house right now.
All right, Grandpa.
I'm gonna take some videos of the inside
and bring them home, and we could all look at them.
All right, Grandma and Grandpa.
I love you guys so much.
Love you.
I wanna check it out.
I wanna find out if there is a potential
of finding a gold mine.
Oh, that must be it there.
Yeah, 123.
At least it's not collapsing.
Oh, see if it's open.
Oh, man, there ain't even a freaking door handle.
It smells like an old person's house.
It's kind of like they left it,
expecting to come back real quick.
No way!
Some old slacks.
Do I even dare touch this stuff?
So here's my next outfit.
Got my shirt, got my pants.
"Mi Costa."
I'd assume it's one of the boats my family owned up here.
Wow.
That stinks.
I'm striking out.
All right, here we go.
Here we go, we got a desk.
That's badass.
That's one of my family's old boats,
the Robert E. Reeseoff.
Freaking...
Oh!
All right, this is what I was looking for.
I mean, this thing's so old...
there's no date on it, there's no nothing.
This might... be something special.
This is an old-ass chart.
This is what I was looking for.
From Atka...
Adak, Kanaga, Tanaga.
I got from Tanaga to Atka, covered.
That's 200-plus miles of bottom.
He's got strings in all of these bays,
all these little passes, and tiny valleys right there.
Wow.
He has the bearings wrote down,
he's got the depth curve changes that aren't on the map.
This is priceless stuff.
We need to find a way to narrow this down.
All right, I'm gonna get this back to the boat.
All right, we're getting close.
We've got a 30-mile spread on our gear,
uh, different depths,
shallow to deep.
And then we'll see what happens here.
And I'm excited because, I've been out this way
for quite some time, so...
I'm hoping that this is similar to what we saw in the past,
you know, similar to what my old man used to do.
Coming up.
No, no, no, no, no. That's not gonna do it.
Ah!
OK, next one coming up.
That's a little better.
Good.
They look big. That's the main thing,
but we need more.
All right! Third one.
Come on, come on, come on.
Oh, that looks...
beautiful!
I mean, there's still crab. It looks good.
That one looks fine, but it is less.
- Yeah! - Whoo!
So the last couple of pots have been kind of tapering down.
It almost makes me wonder if the, you know, if there's
just a little strip in here, and 65 is the magic number.
We're just gonna have to see.
Hey, Rick! How goes it?
How was it over there at your grandpa's place?
...a bunch of old magazines and pictures.
I found a couple charts, too.
Is there any info on those things?
Anything we see out here, I will share with you, OK?
Hey, do you wanna take a picture of the charts
and send it to Sig? - OK.
I got it. Hang on a second, Rick.
Stand by.
And these gullies kind of go up to the north,
but they cross a lot of different depths here,
fifty, sixty fathoms. Here's a gully.
He's gonna screw us on this one, I got a feeling.
I mean, kinda if you take my 65 fathom range,
you know, it does narrow it down a little bit.
You know, I think if you kind of just combine the two,
you're probably gonna see crab all along in there,
all along in that ridge, all along in that gully, I bet.
Well at least put the elevator music on,
so I feel like I'm...
Sorry, I had you on mute.
...in that 65 fathom range.
There are some gullies that kind of go up and down there.
Put the two together,
and I think that would be a winner, I really do.
Yeah, sounds good, 65 fathoms.
Why don't I just meet you at the south side
of that little gully?
Be a little tight in there, but... if there's crab,
there's crab, right?
All right, man. Bye.
We gotta give it a shot,
and the sign we saw, definitely in that 60 range,
that 65 range was good.
It's just not enough to bang out a big trip,
but it does show that there's, you know,
that there's crab out there.
If it pays off, it could be good,
that's all I'm saying.
I mean, if you miss--
it's fuel, time, and money, and it's all the things
we don't have right now, so very risky.
My grandpa put in tens of millions of pounds
of king crab from out west.
If I could find something, that could be the game changer.
Looks like right now we're gonna be a little bit late
for the cannery.
We're gonna get our crab to them,
but it'll be a little bit late.
We're doing eight knots. That's as hard as I can run it.
But Neal's got the sail up.
We're getting about nine knots out of this.
Nine and a half, ten knots with a sail.
We'll make it.
I can see the harbor entrance right there.
Roger!
Oh, yeah, it's right where that white water is.
Whoo, whoo!
Look at that this one. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Oh, [bleep]!
Those are like 20-foot waves.
Look at those breakers.
We're on a 113-foot surfboard right now.
That entrance is so small.
It's only like 120-feet wide or 28-feet wide,
so we only got 50 feet on each side, it's scary.
Six to nine fathoms, three fathoms, 18-foot waves.
Yeah, that's pretty ugly. Just not enough water in there.
We got $300,000 worth of crab on board.
It'd be nice to just tie them to the dock, that's for sure.
If we hit the bottom, we suck mud up,
flood all our crab, kill all our crab.
It's happened to a lot of people here.
Let's get up there and take a look.
Well, if we do,
we're gonna surf our way in there, that's for damn sure.
That's a big wave. That's a big wave.
Look at that [bleep].
Hang on.
That's scary.
I don't wanna scare me right now.
- Look at this. - Oh, my God.
That's a set you don't wanna go in on.
Holy [bleep].
Might be too rough. I'll go up and take a look.
Yeah, it might be.
It's getting shallow right now.
Just do not hit the bottom.
Otherwise, I will put my survival suit on right now.
We could-- we could probably get in there,
but just gotta wait for the right one.
Yeah, we'll get a little closer.
Just ram it up there if you're gonna do it.
Look at that wave.
Oh, my gosh!
Look at that wave. Oh, yeah, look at that.
[bleep] Oh my gosh!
I want nothing to do with this.
Nothing do with this.
Yeah, we don't wanna go in there, my friend.
This is too shallow right here.
That's just too big already, I think.
Yeah, that's freaking way risky.
- I'll turn around. - Yeah.
Too much money worth of crab on board,
we could lose our boat, we could lose all our crab,
and we could lose our lives.
Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh.
- Holy smokes! - Oh.
It's gotta be 25-foot frickin' break surf coming in.
Oh, my goodness.
Two extra hours, take a little break,
and then we can go in the harbor.
But not right now.
Not for the faint of heart.
There he is.
Right on. We're gonna do this thing.
All right, are you about ready?
...take a chance and work it together.
I got Bob watching you drop the pot.
I don't wanna get too close because right now we're gonna
tangle up if we set at the same time.
Yeah, totally.
Hey, how's it going, Sig?
...or a loser?
Well, if it was a winner, then it was my idea,
and if it's a loser, then it was Rick's idea.
All right, I'm gonna let the first one go.
Going over!
This is about a tenth that's going over.
Go!
I feel like I'm cheating, man,
like we're using somebody else's old information.
OK.
So, what do you think?
I mean, we got room for another 10 more each, or what?
It's gonna be close.
We're gonna be coming out of it here in a couple,
but I wanna get as many in here as I can.
...kind of fire at will right now.
Roger.
Well, I think we got a pretty good shot
at hitting something here, I really do.
I don't think you can get any more gear in there properly
the way we did.
...gonna at least have the opportunity to catch.
...fun, you know?
So stress, no stress, crab, no crab,
I had fun. That's so far, so good, man.
Knock on wood.
Trying to get into the harbor again.
It's been like really bad here,
but I think we're gonna be OK this time.
Come around really slow, then we can slowly go in.
It's a really small entrance.
Here we go.
It's a very small harbor.
You see that blinking orange?
Right there, blinking orange. Head straight towards that.
I can't see it.
Stick your head out the [bleep] window,
and you'll be able to see really good.
I know, I am. I'm turning around again,
'cause I can't [bleep] see it.
You got to stick your head out the window to see.
You're coming in too hot. I can see it.
I know, all I see--
Let me get it. I got it.
Go ahead, Neal.
If I can't see it, I'm not going in.
If you can't see it, don't do it.
Aim straight for that light.
Yeah, heading straight for the light, brother.
I'm coming in slow.
Stay away from that breakwater
on your right. - Yeah.
I see these breakers going in there, brother.
I'm going too far to the left.
I can see the harbor entrance,
but it looks [bleep] sketchy as hell.
I can see the breakwater on your side.
Straighten it out.
Don't let it blow you to the starboard.
Where's the blinking yellow? Go starboard or port?
Two fathoms.
This ain't easy.
- One fathom. - Very scary.
Very [bleep] scary.
They turned the starboard.
Starboard! Starboard hard.
[bleep] [bleep]
- I'm right here. - I'm sorry.
I didn't know you were there.
That was terrible, honey.
Oh, my God. I'm in trouble.
You guys might have to protect me.
I need protection.
One fathom.
One fathom.
Very [bleep] scary.
[bleep] [bleep].
Where's the blinking yellow?
You see blinking yellow?
Yeah.
Just keep coming around to the port.
OK.
Straighten it out. [bleep]
- Right ahead. - Yep.
- OK, this ain't easy. - No, you're good.
Give it all she got.
Coming in. Hot rod.
- Just like that, right? - I got it right here.
- We got it made. - Yep.
Keep going. Just straight ahead.
I can see the whole shot, buddy.
We got the whole shot.
- Whoo! - Straighten her out.
Now I got to go wipe this [bleep] off my ass.
[bleep]
Wow!
We made it.
You imagine abandoning ship right there.
How embarrassing would that be?
My whole career flushed down the toilet.
We just got schooled by this little harbor.
Wow!
Holy moly, what a long day.
Took a big risk, but I don't have any regrets.
Not at this point.
All right, coming up on the first pot.
Here we go.
A lot of suspense here.
We took the west side, Sig took the east side.
I can't wait to get the first one up.
You can't deny that.
Oh, hell yeah, there's 50, 60.
- Nuh-uh. - Yeah.
- Whoo! - It's looking good.
- Yeah. - Hell yeah.
- Whoo! - Yeah, baby.
Hey, Sig.
Whoo!
...we are in 'em.
Oh, yeah. They're all going in.
That string is just on fire right now.
It's doing great.
- Oh yeah, baby! - Here we go.
There she goes.
We're in 'em, big, man.
I'm impressed, man. Way to go.
Everything you're doing.
We thread the needle.
I don't think you can get any more gear in there.
This is going to be very fun.
Holy crap.
All right, you guys. Thank you, man.
- Yeah! - Whoo!
It worked out great.
I don't think this was just luck or coincidence.
I think that this place is rebounding, it's coming back,
and it's like we stepped back in time, you know?
Pretty exciting to see.
An hour two minutes late, but they're gonna take us.
Thank you, Lord. Whoo!
Thank you, God.
Go around it, right?
They double that one up.
We did it. We [bleep] made it, dude.
That sail saved us a couple hours.
Oh, baby!
Half a million dollars worth of crab on the line right here.
I don't know if this is the smallest harbor in the world,
but it's the smallest harbor I've ever been in in the world,
in the world I know.
Good boat, good boat. Unbelievable.
Christmas day right here.
This is a fisherman's Christmas right here.
Yep.
