the old Dutch Harbor.

I mean, this was the center
of the crab universe
back then.

We're talking millions
and millions of pounds
of crab,

billions of dollars
that went through here.

And then all of a sudden,
out of nowhere, the crab
just disappeared.

They were gone.

Until now.

A whole cod pot
full of king crab!

One of these guys
that was out here fishing cod

took a video of a pot
full of red king crab.

It was bycatch.

If you're finding
that kind of crab
in your cod gear,

there's crab out there.

And I'm not
gonna be the only one
going after these crab.

They're coming.

But the farther west you go,
it will just eat you alive.

One week
before the start
of the fall season...

...a cell phone video
captured near Adak Island

shows the first sign
of red king crab
on the western Aleutians

in a generation.

Cod boat video
catching all this king crab
came out,

so we all freaked out,
as you can imagine.

The fishery out there
used to be big.

West of Dutch Harbor,

these remote
and once fruitful grounds

spanned the steep banks
north of Atka and Adak,

all the way to Attu,

covering over
60,000 square miles
of fishable depths

where Bering Sea
and Pacific currents collide,

creating ten-plus knot tides

and unpredictable,
towering 20-plus-foot seas.

Going out west used to be
the Mecca.

Both my grandpas,
they were putting in
130 million pounds every year.

If it's anything
like they saw,

we're gonna hit
the motherlode.

Come on, team! Let's go!

But with a 12.2-million-pound,
$128 million fall quota,

even the most seasoned captain
has no choice but to face
the risks of going west.

When you go west,
you're subjected
to even worse weather.

That's the graveyard
of crab boats.

So many unknowns
out there.

It's gonna be like nothing
I've ever fished before.

That's a lot of fuel.
That's a lot of time.

But it's untapped resource.

High risk, huge reward.

the big boys play.

It was a key location
in World War II.

It was one of the major
refueling stations,

and you can still see
a lot of structures here.

Quonset huts
and bunkers and stuff.

When I was a kid,
I was on a boat out here.

We had a guy
who broke his back
and he was bleeding profusely.

When we got up
to that breakwater over here,

I could see two nuclear subs.

My skipper said, "[bleep] you!
We're coming in. We don't care
what you're saying."

And they said, "[bleep] you!
We'll shoot you down."

Now, I get to go to Adak.

We are way, way out here.

After steaming
55 hours across 445 miles
of Aleutian chain...

Sig Hansen
is one of the hardest workers

so we should be able
