the events of this remarkable period in

of a stolen artifact considered by

many to be the eighth wonder of the

And can miraculous survival stories be
the work of divine intervention or

Well, that is what we'll try and find

September 1st, 1939.

As dawn breaks, Nazi Germany launches a
surprise attack with one and a half

million soldiers,

2 ,500 tanks, and 2 ,000 warplanes.

This massive invasion marks the
beginning of World War II.

After conquering Poland, Hitler expands
German territory throughout Europe.

and steals billions of dollars in gold.

One of the things connected to Hitler's
grand scheme of completely restructuring

Europe is loot. As Nazi Germany extended
its control over most of continental

Europe, a great deal of acquisition of
valuables went on.

And so they were just sort of grabbing
anything that might be of value.

Nazi Germany.

had to be very minded toward the
accumulation of gold as a resource that

going to help it win the war.

Their military went to war with the
world and then stole a great deal of

from millions of people.

In April 1945, near the end of the war,
the U .S. Army received intelligence

about a hidden stash of stolen Nazi gold
in Markers, Germany.

There, in an abandoned salt mine,
American soldiers discovered a jaw

fortune.

The US Army discovered the most
astonishing hidden hoard of Nazi gold.

I mean, they literally walked in and
were almost knee -deep in gold coins and

other treasures.

They couldn't believe their eyes.

And some total value was, by today's
valuation,

$8 .5 billion worth.

And that's just in that one tunnel.

So it makes sense that there are other
tunnels and other caves elsewhere that

have more Nazi gold.

Is there billions of dollars in stolen
Nazi gold that has yet to be found?

And if so, where could it be?

Well, according to local legend, some of
this vast treasure could still be

hidden where the war started.

In Poland.

During the closing weeks of World War
II, the Germans are hurriedly trying to

evacuate things that have occupied
Poland.

And there was a lot of stuff in the
chaos at the end of the war.

It was being loaded up any way you
could.

It's been spirited out of the country.
And then a lot of valuables go missing.

And so that's where you get stories of
things like the Nazi gold train.

The fabled Nazi gold train is one of the
most enduring mysteries of World War II

and an obsession for treasure hunters
around the world.

Legend has it that a Nazi train brimming
with stolen gold and valuables

departed from Wroclaw, Poland in 1945.

And then it reportedly disappeared.

Without a trace.

As the story is told, they had a special
train which was to transport the

contents, at least the most valuable
contents.

It was armor -plated, and they had gun
turrets on it, so it was very well

protected.

And it was filled with 300 tons of gold,
bullion, and other valuables and

artwork that were loaded onto the train.

And the train is never seen again.

The belief is that that train carrying
God only knows how much gold was on its

way between Roslav and a town called
Walbrich.

And somewhere between Roslav and
Walbrich, the train was sent onto a

where it was then ultimately stopped
permanently and then buried to prevent

from falling into the enemy's hands.

Could the Nazi gold train really be
buried somewhere near the 40 miles of

between these two Polish towns?

For Polish treasure hunter Michael
Dembinski, this persistent local legend

fascinating mystery.

Did the Germans hide this train
somewhere along the line? That is the

possibility that has intrigued treasure
hunters for the best part of 80 years.

It's all about eyewitnesses, really.
There's nothing on paper.

But this story was doing the rounds.

In Valdrich, if you talk to older people
there, they will say, yes, but I

remember that story from childhood about
these trains full of treasures that

have mysteriously disappeared.

Not only do the people of Valdrich
distinctly remember the coal train.

They also say that during the German
occupation, there was a stretch of train

track that branched off the main railway
line and it led to a fortified location

that was under Nazi control.

A place called Kassage Castle.

Kassage Castle finds itself just outside
of Fallbrich.

The castle itself is beautiful. It's a
magnificent palace, really.

Now, very important in all of this is,
The rumour that many, many people talk

about, that between Książ Castle itself
and the main Wrocław to Walbrzych

railway line, there was a spur linking
Książ Castle and the main line.

This is still to be confirmed, but there
are enough rumours to suggest that this

actually was the case.

Książ Castle has been described as the
Pearl of Lower Silesia in Poland.

It's a beautiful fairytale place.

that the Nazis certainly took a great
interest in, not only above ground, but

below it.

Local people told the story of an
underground city where they would have a

of Nazi -looted gold and treasures, and
perhaps the great

legendary Nazi gold train.

This is crucial to the whole story
because it was here that the Germans

building a top -secret complex of
underground tunnels

and bunkers and caverns. And to this
day, no one can really

come up with a good reason as to why the
Nazis were so obsessed with completing

this project.

We don't know what the plan was for how
this site was going to be used. All we

know is there's a massive underground
network of tunnels and caves that were

being interlinked together, and that
there might be a train with unimaginable

gold wealth on it, buried there in 1945.

A secret underground lair in the same
region that the Nazi gold train was said

to disappear.

For many, it's just too coincidental to
ignore.

But only about 10 % of this massive
underground complex has been explored.

So even if the legendary Nazi gold frame
was buried there, there's still no

guarantee it will ever be found.

The problem for treasure hunters in that
area is where to start.

There are thousands upon thousands of
tunnels.

and the difficulty is finding where they
begin and end.

The tunnels branch off here and there,
and some of them go underwater.

Each of them is extensive in size, and
it really does beg the question, why

the Nazis doing this?

So in terms of further searches for the
gold train, my hunch is that

it's going to be found under Change
Castle.

Will further exploration of the winding
tunnels beneath Kajar's castle finally

uncover the lost gold?

Hiroshima, Japan, August 6, 1945.

8 .15 a .m.

29 -year -old engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi
is walking to work.

When a blinding flash, brighter than the
sun, fills the sky.

He doesn't know it yet, but the world's
first atomic bomb has just exploded over

the city with a force of 15 ,000 tons of
TMT, creating a massive

shockwave that disintegrates everything
in its path.

Instinctively, Tsutomu Yamaguchi raced
into a ditch as an atomic fireball began

to pulverize almost everything in sight.

Like a gigantic hand from outer space
coming down, crushing everything,

all structures away.

The bomb that exploded over Hiroshima
was the most destructive force ever

unleashed in history.

80 ,000 people died instantly as
temperatures approaching the surface of

vaporized their bodies and bathed the
city in lethal radiation.

But astoundingly, despite being less
than two miles from ground zero, Mr.

Yamaguchi somehow survived.

Mr. Yamaguchi was working in a big ship
company called Mitsubishi.

And Mitsubishi shipyard had a
headquarter in Nagasaki.

And towards the end of World War II, he
was walking from his dormitory to the

shipyard to get some documentation.

And then he saw a strange B -29 flying.

And from the B -29, he saw the
parachute, two, three parachute was

He saw the huge fireball coming from the
ground, and it's like an eruption of

the volcano.

And then he passed out.

He woke up, and he didn't know how many
minutes passed, but what he saw was a

huge pillar of the fire over the
Hiroshima city.

Everything was bad.

There is ash falling from the sky.

And he realizes that his eardrums have
been shattered and that he was burned by

the enormous amount of heat that came
out of the blast.

He got a thousand times the dose of
radiation that we experienced in one

year simply by walking on the surface of
the Earth.

Anyone who was in that type of a radius
from an atomic bomb would experience...

anywhere from 95 to 98 percent chance of
dying due to all the different

dimensions of injury that are possible.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi's survival of the
nuclear devastation at Hiroshima is

impossible to fathom.

But what's even more unbelievable is
that just three days later, on August

9th, 1945, he did it again.

Yamaguchi is from Nagasaki.

After being atomic bombed, he wants to
go back to meet his family.

So he gets on a train, travels 186 miles
from Hiroshima to Nagasaki, and then

for a second time, he sees this flash of
light coming from an atomic

detonation, the Nagasaki bomb.

And there's a repeat of the tragedy.

He was in his office.

with his supervisor and the colleagues.

And at that moment, the Nagasaki bomb
blasted.

And he immediately ducked and hid under
the table, under the desk.

So he survived, but his colleagues lost
their lives.

More than 75 ,000 people died in the
Nagasaki bombing.

Yet once again, Tsutomu Yamaguchi walked
away from a deadly nuclear blast with

only minor injuries.

Even more incredibly, despite being
exposed to a lethal dose of radiation

the second time in three days, he lived
an otherwise healthy life before finally

dying at the age of 93.

Those two quick doses of radiation
within three days of each other is

terrible. You would think it would
have...

destroyed his body, his internal organs.

But somehow, this man had a system that
was able to withstand it.

And so it shows that there's a lot more
going on with our bodies, and they're

capable of a lot more than we may
realize. It just takes these

circumstances to show us that.

From a medical perspective, it defies
all of this.

This active naval and Air Force base is
also home to the Pearl Harbor National

Memorial, a hallowed site that draws
nearly 2 million visitors every year.

At the heart of this historic landmark
is a floating memorial.

built over the sunken wreckage of the
USS Arizona battleship.

It is a solemn place to contemplate a
dark day which will forever

live in infamy.

The morning of December 7th, a
substantial Japanese fleet launched an

assault on the U .S. at Pearl Harbor.

The goal was to cripple the U .S.
Pacific fleet so that they could not

Japanese plans for invasion across the
Pacific.

They launched about 353 aircraft.

They attacked for about an hour and a
half.

And over the period, they killed some 2
,403 Americans, including

68 civilians.

And they damaged or destroyed 19 ships
of the United States Navy.

The Arizona was one of the first ships
to be attacked, and the very first

attack. Ten aircraft went after it, and
they were dropping armor -piercing

aerial bombs.

One went through five decks into the
Arizona, which had about a million

of gunpowder in it.

Caused an explosion so large that the
ship's bulkheads blew outwards.

The entire 30 ,000 -ton ship was lifted
bodily from the water and then sank very

quickly.

Fires burned for two days afterwards,
making it almost impossible to engage in

recovery efforts.

And so 1 ,104 sailors and marines of the
Arizona are still aboard. They went

down with the ship, and the remains were
never removed.

So it is definitely a cemetery.

The names of the men who died on the USS
Arizona are immortalized on a marble

wall at the Pearl Harbor Memorial.

And for over 80 years, the attack on
Pearl Harbor has continued.

Haunt the American people.

So when we see at Pearl Harbor, oh, this
is where this happened or this is where

so -and -so was killed. I've got
goosebumps right now just talking about

is a spiritual experience for anyone.

When you talk about Pearl Harbor, there
are a lot of reports of ghost hauntings.

This is a location that saw so much
death, so much tragedy, and now as

back, there's an energy that still
permeates the area.

These are echoes of the past.

The people that died in the attack on
Pearl Harbor died in horrible

circumstances. They were burned to death
or drowned or both.

If any place was going to be haunted,
Pearl Harbor is such a place.

Pearl Harbor is a graveyard.

But could it also be a home to restless
spirits?

Some say yes, in light of the fact that
both civilians and military personnel

have reported strange apparitions and
supernatural phenomena throughout the

base. The most famous of which is a
mysterious spirit referred to as

Reportedly, Charlie is this sort of
benevolent, mischievous spirit.

Charlie's on Ford Island. So Ford Island
is in the middle of Pearl Harbor.

And it was actually the first to be
attacked in the battle.

So many people think of Ford Island as
being haunted.

And according to the stories, sometimes
a light will be left on that wasn't

supposed to, or a radio will turn on, or
a station will just change.

And when that happens, they'll say, oh,
that's just Charlie.

This is a spirit that's been around the
area for a long, long time.

people attributed to somebody that
perished there at Pearl Harbor.

So it's one of those things that really
heightens that idea that Pearl Harbor is

haunted.

While encounters with Charlie have been
reported on Ford Island for decades,

many visitors have also felt a ghostly
presence near the wreckage of the USS

Arizona.

The USS Arizona Memorial is a very
reverent location.

You can feel the fatness that is there,
and they've done a really beautiful job

of creating this memorial so these
sailors who lost their lives in such a

gruesome, horrific fashion can be
remembered to this day.

You go out to this bridge -like
structure, and there isn't a ship

It's underwater.

The water is fairly murky, but you can
only sort of make out this, the kind of

vague outlines.

And you really have to examine things to
figure out what you're looking at.

You have to keep in mind that what
you're essentially standing over is a

That, to me, is the most important part.

When the Pearl Harbor attack occurred,
the USS Arizona had just been topped off

the day before on all of its fluids.

So when it sank, over a million gallons
of oil were trapped within the

superstructure.

And what's happening to this day is oil
will rise to the surface, and they call

these the black tears of the USS
Arizona.

This oil rises up, and it creates kind
of a slick on the water, which you can

see from the memorial.

And occasionally people will see in the
slick what appears to be like a ghostly

face. And some of the photos of these
are truly haunting.

And, of course, it's not surprising that
people would take that as being some

sort of representation.

of the agony of the men who died aboard
the Arizona.

Skeptics may scoff at the idea of ghosts
or things of this nature, but you

cannot deny that when you walk aboard
that memorial, it is a powerful

experience. It's just a fascinating and
unique piece of American history.

In this suburban town stands the
Catherine Palace.

Originally built in the 18th century as
a summer home for the Russian royal

In the early 20th century, many referred
to the Amber Room as the eighth wonder

of the world.

Its value has been estimated to be over
500 million in today's dollars.

But it's hard to appraise exactly how
much it would be worth, because the

magnificent jewels and panels of the
Amber Room were stolen.

On 22nd, 1941, Adolf Hitler launches
Operation Barbarossa, the Nazi

invasion of the Soviet Union.

Within weeks, German troops lay siege to
the city of St. Petersburg.

But Hitler's goal isn't only to capture
the Russian city.

He's also fixated on taking the Amber
Room for himself.

The Nazis were obsessed with looting
valuable stuff.

Artworks, you name it, anything that was
valuable.

So wherever they saw it, and let's not
forget they occupied many, many

countries, they took it.

The German commandos, they knew exactly
what they were doing, and in a mere 36

hours, pried these sheets of amber off
the wall, packaged it

up into 27 crates, and it already had a
destination in mind.

The Nazis put the 27 crates containing
the Amber Room on a train and shipped

them to Konigsberg Castle in Germany.

The Amber Room was then put on display
in the castle.

That is until August 1944, when the
Allied forces

advanced into Germany, and the Nazis
were forced to move the Amber Room yet

again to prevent it from being reclaimed
by the Russians.

But no one knows for sure where they hid
it.

For the Nazis, towards the end of the
war, when they knew their number was up,

basically all their looted artworks and
treasures were dispersed.

And they were hidden down silver mines
or disused mines or caves.

That's the enduring mystery of the Amber
Room. Was this put on a train and sent

into Germany? Was it sent up into the
Alps? Was it sunk into a lake? Would it

into a salt mine?

There are a tantalizing number of
possible locations

for what became of it.

Where did the Nazis hide the Amber Room?

And could that secret location be where
it still is today, more than 75 years

later?

According to many researchers, the best
clue as to the whereabouts of the Amber

Room came from a Nazi war criminal named
Eric Koch.

Eric Koch was Gauleiter of East Prussia.

That's the sort of equivalent of
governor of that whole region.

And he was one of the most unyielding,
brutal of any of the Nazis.

He was the one who put the Amber Room on
display in the castle.

He also ordered it crated up to be saved
as the Soviets were approaching and was

arrested as he was trying to get on a
submarine bound for South America and

sentenced to death, only he was not
executed.

And part of the reason he was not
executed is that he was perhaps the

only person who really knew what
happened to the Amber Room.

In 1986, Eric Koch died of natural
causes in a Polish prison.

But according to eyewitness accounts,
before his death, Koch was seen leading

Polish authorities on a search for the
Amber Room at a former Nazi military

near the town of Mimerki, Poland, which
is located just 80 miles southeast of

Konigsberg.

Based on the fact that you have
eyewitnesses, the most tantalizing new

is that the Amber Room is somehow hidden
in the former Nazi army

headquarters in Mimarki in Poland.

This is an important site where you have

In 1940, the Amber Room was never
recovered.

And since that time, it's never
recovered.

And since that time, many have wondered
where the Nazis hid the treasure.

In recent years, some researchers have
suggested that the Amber Room could

possibly be hidden beneath a former Nazi
military base located in Mamerki,

Poland.

And on June 27, 2019, a team of local
researchers lifted a concrete slab from

the ground in the area of the base,
revealing a narrow, unexplored tunnel.

Some believe that this discovery
suggests that the base may, in fact,

treasure stolen by the Nazis.

Historians don't know, actually, how
extensive this tunneling is. I mean, you

literally could have miles of this
stuff.

So, of course, the speculation is that
maybe this is where the Amber Room is.

Because it's only a couple hours' drive
from Konigsberg, you could easily have

put those crates on a truck and brought
it to this Nazi facility.

Could underground tunnels below the Nazi
base be the true hiding place of the

priceless pieces of the Amber Room?

According to local historian Bartek
Plebancik, the answer is yes.

Bartek has spent years exploring
numerous tunnels that are already known

connect more than 30 bunkers and
fortifications throughout the base.

It is his belief that in addition to
these structures, there may be a larger

network of secret tunnels that lie even
deeper underground.

This tunnel is 30 meters long. It's
connecting two bunkers, like an

channel between those two bunkers.

Unfortunately, this is the only one
channel we could find in America right

looking for other channels like this.

Hopefully, maybe with Amber Room inside.

Because Bartek and his associates have
already found evidence of previously

undiscovered tunnels in the forest area
near the base, he is utilizing ground

-penetrating radar to gather more

Baltic Tech found the Karlsruhe wreck at

the bottom of the Baltic Sea in the fall

The Karlsruhe is a really interesting

Königsberg Castle was located on the
shores of the Baltic Sea, and so it was

well positioned for the evacuation.

When the Red Army descended upon this
area, and the Nazis knew that the gig

If there was anything remaining in
Königsberg Castle that had not yet been

evacuated, it was going out on that
ship.

The Karlsruhe was unfortunately sunk by
Soviet aircraft.

Fully laden, had about a thousand people
on board, and possibly with cargo

including the 27 crates containing the
Amber Room.

The study is continuing to understand
exactly what is contained in this ship,

but there are many who are hopeful that
the 27 boxes containing the Amber Room

are among its hidden treasures.

Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire,
England, September 1939.

Shortly after the outbreak of World War
II, British military intelligence

establishes a top -secret base at this
secluded country estate.

Referred to as Station X, it is home to
a hand -picked team of brilliant

mathematicians who are charged with
cracking an infamous German encoding

called the Enigma machine.

The Enigma machine is an
electromechanical ciphering device for

text message in such a way that it
cannot be deciphered or decoded.

When communicating with an Enigma
machine, an operator can key in a plain

message that's encoded by the device
that can then be transmitted as alphabet

gobbledygook to the other operator who
receives it.

And through adjusting a series of rotors
and plug boards, the receiving end can

then turn that alphabet soup into a
coherent message.

But anybody that's listening in won't be
able to make sense of the message.

Enigma was such a successful cipher that
it took a Herculean effort to break it.

At the peak of British decryption
efforts, nearly 9 ,000 personnel.

worked tirelessly at Bletchley Park and
its substations to try and crack German

ciphers. And then, finally, a
breakthrough came when mathematician

realized that the Enigma machine had a
critical flaw.

The Enigma machine had one big weakness,
and the weakness was that a letter

cannot be encoded as itself.

So if it's the letter A...

No matter what, the Enigma machine will
never make it the letter A.

So you automatically know what letter it
is not.

You're able to work from that.

Alan Turing came up with the idea of we
could automate the process of running

through all the possibilities of what
letter this might be.

He worked with another person by the
name of Gordon Welchman to come up with

device that they called the BOM device.

And the bomb device was simply an
electromechanical device that was

run through a vast number of
possibilities to see if you're capable

what you think the message setting might
be.

And the bomb device, by 1941, was
cracking Enigma -encoded messages every

And so at Bletchley Park, they would
crack Enigma, and then the clock would

strike midnight.

and they'd have to crack it all over
again. And that's how it went every day.

Alan Turing's and Gordon Welshman's bomb
device was quickly mass -produced and

utilized by coat -crackers across the
globe.

The one -ton machine deciphered codes on
a day -to -day basis from 1940 to 1945.

All the while, Germany was unaware that
their Enigma machine had been

outsmarted.

Ultimately, it was the breaking of
Germany's unbreakable code that would

lead the Allies to victory.

Breaking the Enigma secret ended the
Battle of the Atlantic once and for all.

And that's because now Allied forces
could understand where German U -boats

operating on the map.

And the U -boat during World War II was
Nazi Germany's one and only strategic

weapon.

That was the only weapon they had that
in and of itself could have won that

And it didn't happen because Alan Turing
and the staff of people in Hut 8 at

Bletchley Park cracked German naval
enigma.

And in so doing, they shortened that war
by probably two years, and they

probably saved about a million lives.

What's the human fascination with
solving codes and ciphers? The key.

To winning World War II?

Perhaps.

But in any case, cracking the notorious
Enigma code saved millions of lives from

the Nazi war machine.

With more than 127 million people
mobilized to fight, World War II was the

largest and deadliest conflict in human
history.

And while many of the secrets
surrounding the Second World War have

revealed,

How many more mysteries might still lie
hidden and remain

unexplained?
