The crash of Flight 401 actually
happened. Certain scenes and characters

been fictionalized for the purpose of
dramatization.

On December 29, 1972, Eastern Airlines
Flight 401 took off from New York's

Kennedy Airport en route to Miami.

The weather was clear.

The plane, Lockheed's new L -1011, was
the safest ever built.

The pilot, one of Eastern's most
experienced, yet he and many of his

had only two hours and 20 minutes to
live.

The plane crashed, leaving in its wake
two questions. How could such a disaster

have happened? And how could 73 of the
passengers survive a crash that was

classified unsurvivable?

mismatch in the autopilot system.

The NTSB's final report determined that
the probable cause of the crash was the

failure of the cockpit crew to monitor
the instruments during the final four

minutes of flight.

There was no reason to expect that such
a crash could ever have happened, or

that it could ever happen again.
