I'd like to give you a tour of this building first.

This building is a national treasure. It's the temple kitchen.

There is a carving installed there.

It reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of Date Masamune, the Sengoku warlord,

and his passion for the construction of Zuiganji Temple.

[Inatomi] What you see depicted here is a raptor.

A raptor is a bird of prey, such as a hawk or an eagle.

-It symbolizes the bravery... -[Raul] I see.

...and strength that Date showed as a warrior.

As well as his precepts as a warrior.

-Precepts? -[Inatomi] Teachings.

This painting reflects those as well.

[Inatomi] Look here, for example.

-The falcon is holding down a white bird. -[Raul] I see.

-[Inatomi] Another's hunting a white bird. -[Raul] Yes.

-What is it? -This white bird is the hint.

A symbol of peace?

It means to not be boastful or conceited

but to listen attentively to others.

He requested that he be depicted with a right eye

in any portraits or statues of him created after his death.

It's really interesting to look at this while hearing about its backstory.

Having the paintings explained
