And it turns out that once again, I'm in
deep trouble.

No, we're going to Morgan. The reason
is, I mean, it's a two -fold way. So

they're doing the launch of their new
car, and I'm hosting that.

From what I understand, it's got a big
launch. They're making a big deal of it.

Yeah. But we're also there as the Cog
because they've got this car that we

do for them.

Yeah, the first ever Morgan Arrow 8.

And what's also cool is that you've had
20 -odd years working there, and you

know the company, the people.

So, Jamie, you're our secret weapon.

I'm looking forward to it. And when we
get there, we're going to meet another

secret weapon, Zog.

He's more of a tool.

Morgan are one of the few remaining
British car manufacturers.

They've been making cars by hand in
their Malvern factory since 1909.

And before he came to us, Jamie worked
here for 19 years.

in the assembly shop in the morning,
launch the new car to the world. May I

I've been to a few launches, and they've
been in the evening, and lots of people

have come. Mm -hm.

You went to their last car launch, Zog,

Can I say what happened? Yeah, yeah. He
over -refreshed himself.

I probably had some Morgan gin.

spilled it in the new car they were

launching. I anointed the bonnet.

So that's the launch.

Yeah. But there's also a possibility of
a job as well.

There is. So, we've got a really special
car in the history of Morgan. It was

our first ever flagship, and it's in a
little bit of a state of disrepair.

Here it is.

in all its glory unveil it let's see it
ah yes one of its cross -eyes so this

was the car in the year 2000 that
launched this was like A new Morgan.

And we want to, yeah, we want to restore
it because everybody is going to see

this car alongside the new flagship.
We'd love to do it ourselves. We just,

are flat out of the way. You want to get
the real people to do this.

What might be useful, Beth, if we can

It's nice to get something that I know
inside out, but there's quite a bit of

pressure. So how it looks is everything,
and how it looks at the launch of the

new car is critical.

because he knows the cars, but he needs
to be on his toes, because he hasn't

just got to finish it on time.

He's got to finish it on time and to
perfection.

Getting that Morgan job is a real coup,
so I want to celebrate with my mate

who runs a big engineering business next
door to our workshop.

That is, if I can drag him away from his
beloved steam engines.

Before it explodes, Morgan, the job is

absolutely tremendous, very, very

It's a 1913 Foster Portable. Ten horse.

What does it do?

Well, it does this.

Is that literally it?

Good, isn't it? No.

It just makes a wheel go round. So
you've thought about getting one, then?

Like I say, you smell better now. That's
lubrication. The only lubrication I

need comes in a pint glass.

Since joining the cog, it's been a
massive learning curve for me.

Every car is slightly different.

Your Ferraris, Aston Martins, MGs, E
-Type Jags, I've got no experience at

with them, so it's really difficult to
make an estimate for these cars. On a

Morgan, I know them inside out, so I can
do a perfect estimate to the hour how

long this should take us.

So we've got to strip the car. This will
take one person around three days to

do. We will then go into the prep and
prime stage.

I'm estimating 30 hours for this one.
Any imperfections or inclusions in the

paintwork will be flattened and polished
out.

So I'm confident with this job. It's
going to be tight with the time frame.

it's a prototype, it can throw up a few
curveballs, but we'll just have to wait

and see.

How much of your life is spent on, like,
business -y stuff, then?

As opposed to... Well, now, now it's as
big as it is. I mean, I live in my ivory

tower. I mean, I used to be on the shop
floor and it was heaven, you know? Like,

getting dirty and messing about, you
know, in the workshop, making nice

Do you not do that anymore?

Hardly.

Hardly. The only thing I get to play
with now is steam.

Steel? I'll tell you something, though.

It's so therapeutical.

It just so happens I know where there's
a rather delightful little steam car.

I don't want it. There's 50. I don't
want it.

You're not looking at it for what it
really is.

feeling when you can't really remember

Well, it turns out I've agreed to look
at a steam car.

Well, it all depends on how you define
explosion, right?

you've got a catastrophic mess.

A catastrophic mess is if a boiler let
loose, but I mean, it's got protection

So today, we're going to fit the new
front splitter.

The challenge is, the one they've sent
us is actually one that went into

production. As you can see, if I put
them both together, so it's not the same

this one, because this was a prototype,
it's all fibreglassed. So I don't think

that's going to fit.

We're going to have to repair the old
one by the looks of it.

That's a lot of work.

You know, we've got a...

a really small window to get this ready
for the launch and it's just put a bit

more pressure on us no time like the
present i'm gonna have to get it in and

it started straight away

so what

i'm doing at the moment i'm just making
some little brackets so where the crack

is we're going to put that screw it in
so it's going to hold the crack in place

We're going to refibre glass and all
that to make it absolutely solid.

And then we take the plates off the
back, well, just screwed in, and

the front, and you'll never know.

It's unusual seeing someone else paint a
Morgan.

The way he sprays it is slightly
different to the way I start and finish

but because I painted thousands in my
time, it seems like he's doing a good

Yeah, we're looking really good.

Are you all right? How are we doing?

We're actually on target. Everything's
painted now.

So I'm just literally building it up.

The Morgans are first for us, being
ahead of schedule on a job.

I might be forgiven for thinking that
all is on the up, but I've got a nagging

feeling it isn't.

I'm looking at E -Type Jaguar, Rebuild.

Jamie took it in with a £20 ,000 budget,
max.

That equates to about 250 hours.

But I think Anton is already about 50
hours in.

Hmm. This doesn't really look like a
simple rebuild to me.

And... Yeah?

Mate, I was very pleased when we took
this job on, because I thought,

rebuilding an E -Type. It'll be like a
big Meccano set.

That's what I thought. I didn't think
it'd be a Meccano set that's been kept

the bottom of the sea.

And this is... It's not ordered, is it?
It's not, like... Nothing's labelled.

Right, this is just some bits, isn't it?

There's a lot of partsmithing.

and then we're going to water the bits.

The one thing I don't want is that job
stalling because the customer's unhappy

with spending more money. It's in bit.
It's occupying valuable real estate out

there. It's taking up a lot of hours.

And then we end up finishing it just to
get it gone and unpaid.

Yeah, exactly.

I'll update you when we see where we are

Are we actually going to try and start

of a steam car is that instead of coal,

it actually burns petrol to heat the
water to make the steam to power it.

So what we're going to do, we're going
to aim this in through here, look. That

is the pilot light. So the pilot light
has got to get hot enough so that when

introduce... pressurised petrol and it
comes through these two nozzles here.

Yes. Into the bottom of the boiler that
it then ignites.

Right. You've lit the key.

Yeah. Why is that going in there?
Because it's got to warm. Into that

Over here.

What are you doing with that? Just, you
know, in case, just rehearse.

Oh, yeah, look at that.

Holy... No, I don't like... Is it
supposed to be doing that?

Yeah, they do a lot of that.

Yeah, that is a likely flash, that is.

that's fuel vapour.

with the petrol, or it was not enough.

I'm not sure yet. We haven't learnt it's
foibles, you know what I mean?

This pressurises the tank with the
petrol in it.

Otherwise the petrol will just sit in
the tank.

That's definitely better going.

Noise has changed.

Now that's burning beautiful now. Now
it's talking to you, it says it's

up. So it's now heating the water in
that pressure vessel up front until we

steam. Then when we get steam,
eventually, through a system of pipes,

there. at the engine.

It's rising rapidly.

Put your foot on the pedal and the

What's going to happen when I do that?
The back wheels are going to turn.

How far do I open it? Hold it there.

We're not there yet.

Overall, I am thrilled.

The car clearly needs a lot of love,

We got there in the end, and I think
once the whole car has been done from

to back and restored, then it's just
maintenance.

In all honesty, we don't know everything
about this yet.

I still have concerns about this E
-Type. I'm worried the job could easily

up costing more than the owner's got.

So I've asked a friend, Henry Pearman,
who knows these cars better than

anybody else in the country, to come in
as a favour and take a look.

Henry! Hi Richard, how are you? Well,
I'm better for seeing you. Thanks for

doing this. I do appreciate it.

I'm going to leave you to get acquainted

I'm properly grateful to Henry for doing
this, because I need his backup. I need

the confidence of him having seen it.

I will take his word for it.

Probably had new fills, but... This is
all filled over, which it shouldn't be,

where the seams are for the sills and
the little drains are missing.

The reality is everything needs
restoring and rebuilding, and there's a

work to do. All the brake cylinders are
rusted when you look at them for the

wheel cylinders and things, and they're
hundreds of pounds each. So you could

quite easily spend well in excess of £10
,000 just on part to turn that into a

running driving car.

White, no sugar.

You really are getting stuck here.

Here's what I thought when you came to
us. Yeah.

I thought, well, that's basically a kit
car, isn't it? All the bits are there.

Yeah, yeah. And £20 ,000 to just bolt it
together.

Yeah. Should be easy. I should do that
in my shed at home. Yeah, yeah.

And the first thing you said wrong is
all the bits are there.

Yeah. Because they probably aren't. It's
an older restoration on bodywork, so...

There's quite a lot of concern.

Is 20 grand going to come? No way. I
don't know what your labour rate...

your labour rate's £5 an hour.

No. You'd be lucky to get it together
not knowing what problems you might find

at about 1 ,200 hours, I would guess.

So we're looking at 60, 70 grand's worth
of labour.

Yeah. Without parts. Exactly. And
without problems.

And without trim.

This is not good.

And now we've got Mike, the owner,
coming in for an update on his car.

How can this happen?

You always build in a bit of wriggle
room, because it might end up costing

But how can we go from 250 hours of
labour to 1 ,250 hours

in labour? From 16 ,000 in labour, and
that's his budget, to 70

,000 in labour.

What he's going to do is... I'm worried
that that can happen in the first place,

but secondly, what am I going to say?

We've got a meeting, and, um... I'm
going to be the bearer of bad news.

back us up... I brought in a friend of

mine, Henry Pearman, to spend some time
looking over your car. He knows every

millimetre of those cars.

So, first thing is, in his opinion, and
I value that, £20 ,000 ain't going to

get that car built.

Right. The second headline is, realistic
value is somewhere, if it's done really

well, between 80 and 100.

Right. The problem is, you could easily
end up spending that, getting it ready.

The restoration work that was done on
the body... There's a few key things

weren't done quite right. The seals
could be spot welded on with little

holes. There are parts missing. I don't
know what we've got, the parts list.

Yeah, we're up to, at the moment, parts
alone.

You're looking at about £8 ,000.

It's going to take a lot of commitment
to get it there.

And that isn't going to be reflected in
the value of the car at the end of the

day. And I can't give it to you any
straighter than that.

How did you arrive at an estimate for
the job?

We didn't really have an estimate. He
had so much to spend.

I said, is everything with the car? He
said, yes, literally just bolted back

together, which seemed OK.

As we know it, it wasn't. And I guess
that, I'm going to say, that should have

been the first red flag.

We spent a lot of time figuring out.

What was actually missing?

But by then, we were into it. We'd spent
hours, which we had to charge back to

the customer, knowing that what we're
not going to be able to do is the job

customer wanted doing.

No, exactly.

We also hadn't photographed it as we
should have done.

I'm worried.

I think we've had enough wake -up calls.

I'm worried reputationally.

Yeah. I do worry sometimes we're taking
the wrong things on.

Yeah, and that's what's bitten us a bit
over the last few months.

I feel tremendously loyal to Jamie. I
think he works hard.

But we are dropping the ball
occasionally.

We needed a bit more thought, needed
someone to take a step back and go, hang

on, what we need to do is look ahead and
see those mistakes coming and avoid

them.

There's no varnishing it. We all screwed
up on that E -type. We've

underestimated jobs in the past.

I thought we'd got over that, but we
obviously haven't.

I've tried everything to solve this so
far.

I've had consultants come in. I've had
specialists.

I've tried computer programs,
technology. I've tried everything.

So I'm going to go and talk to my mum
about her, maybe coming in and helping.

It's not a mad idea.

She's run businesses herself.

She does organise days.
