- This isn't the movie I set out to make.

I was trying to tell the story

about what we thought was an urban legend,

but it became more about us,
the people investigating it.

You'll see what started out
as a somewhat polished movie

start to deteriorate
over the course of it.

Towards the end, I was
just trying to get anything

that might be helpful in here.

I've kept some identities hidden.

By the end, you should
start to understand why.

At some point, you'll
probably be wondering

why I even continued to make this movie.

I kept thinking back to this
punk band that I used to like,

A real political type.

People used to ask them,

why do they spend their time writing songs

instead of doing something
with more impact?

Well, if you're trying
to start a revolution,

it's better to have a catchy chant

than to hand out pamphlets
that no one's gonna read.

Give people something that'll
really stay with them.

So let's rewind about eight months,

and start at the beginning.
(uneasy expectant music)

- [Reporter] The search
for missing teenager

Bradley Dawes continues.

Questions are being raised
around the connection

to Jason Heartwell and Robert Dubrel,

two other Adelaide teens

that were found murdered
earlier in the year.

Investigators are seeking
assistance from the-

- [Reporter] Pennington
teen, Arnold Brown,

was found dead in Port
Adelaide this morning.

Police now believe there was a link

between the six other
bodies found in surrounding-

- [Reporter] Online forums are a ablaze

with chilling conspiracy theories,

as amateur detectives speculate

that the nine confirmed victims

may only be the be beginning.

Dark whispers of secret societies

orchestrating ritualistic murders-

- [Reporter]Suspects, people
like judges, politicians.

- [Reporter]prominent Business owners
are rumoured to be involved.

It sounds like there's
something very fishy

about the whole thing, if
you do a bit of digging.

- [Reporter] Earlier this week,

one of Australia's most infamous
murderers, Max Lammasche,

was denied parole for the second time.

Lammasche was charged with
murder as the sole perpetrator

of nine male victims from 1991 to 2002,

but many suspect he had accomplices,

and that others were involved.

Numerous attempts to
reinvestigate these murders

have fallen on deaf ears.

Rumours still persist about police.

(uneasy expectant music)

- [Patrick] All right, for fuck's sake.

That's what I got so far, you know,

just editing with what we've got.

A lot of it's just Googled shit.

We've gotta drop in more of
our, you know, actual interviews

and the rest of the
shots from the animators.

-I thought we were making a
movie with good stuff.

- Yeah, we'll use, that
one's falling apart.

We'll use the good camera.

This is for like B roll and, you know,

because these are from the '90s and 2000s.

So it'll fit the aesthetic, it just-

It can just be like extra
shit that goes in the,

you know, while someone's talking,

we cut to shaky handycam footage.

- What are we doing?

- [Patrick] So we're
doing like interview parts

and talking about the movie,
explaining things we’ve filmed.

So as the movie goes on we'll
do these like, you know,

like Big Brother-style cams

where we talk about things we've seen

and people we've talked to and stuff.

- (chuckling) Like a confessional?

- [Patrick] Yeah, kinda
like a confessional cam.

- What do I talk about?
- I'll prompt you.

It's a documentary, you've
gotta tell the truth.

- Okay.

Hi dolls, I'm Sarah Stewart,

I'm executive producer of
"The Household" documentary.

- [Patrick] All right, can you
take it seriously now please,

do a proper one?
- Seriously.

So where did you get the
idea to make this movie?

- Well I mean, if you
take it back a bit, um,

so I got into filmmaking
through skateboarding.

Me and my friends would
go out and film each other

doing tricks and stuff.

And we all lived around Port Adelaide,

so that's where we'd go skateboarding, um,

and that's where a lotta the
Household stuff happened,

you know, happened years before
we were hanging out there.

But you know, our parents
would tell us to be careful,

and we'd meet all kinds of characters

hanging out around there.

- [Bystander] 'Cause the
police come around here

all the time, so be really careful.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- Okay? Where do you live?
- Eh?

- Where do you live?
- So I've kind of always

known about it since I was a kid.

- I don't have time for
this, I gotta get ready.

After high school, "Oh what am I gonna,

what am I gonna do?"

So I went to film school, did
that whole thing, you know,

shot a few weddings, did
some photography gigs.

But you know, it’s a
hard industry to get into,

especially if you don't
know the right people,

and life moves on, need money.

So the last few years I've been working

as a air conditioning repair technician.

- Pat just, like wasn't happy.

He was just in a rut, just
floating through life.

You know, I could just
tell it was horrible.

It was just miserable.

So I encouraged him to
maybe, I don't know,

think about giving filmmaking another go.

And he was always talking
about the Household,

so I said, why don't you make
a documentary about that?

- So the basic story of the Household

is over the span of about a
decade, nine kids were taken.

There was a guy called Max
Lammasche who was arrested

and charged with the murders.

You think, well end of story, right?

But people can't really agree

on what's fact or fiction.

There's a lotta rumours out there,

and some people think
he's actually innocent.

Some people think he was a patsy,

and that there was a, you know police,

police were covering up for them,

whoever you think they are.

So no one's really sure what happened,

and that's why we're making this movie.

And we'll figure it out, hopefully.

(soft uneasy music)

- What are you doing?
- Testing the camera,

and making sure it still worked.

If it can put up with
our bullshit friends,

it can put up whoever,

whoever we're gonna end
up talking to on camera.

- Yeah, that's very true.

- There's a short clip out
there, floating around online,

that's apparently made by the Household.

The story goes that someone before us

was making a documentary
about the Household,

and they dug it up from somewhere.

I can't find any evidence about

whoever was making a
documentary before us,

whoever apparently found the Howard tape.

You don't learn much,
but it's, it's unnerving.

(uneasy expectant music)

(static crackling)

(static hissing)

- Once Pat saw that,
there was no stopping him.

I think Lammasche did it, and
I don't know how much weight

I put to those secret
society ritual killing

kind of rumours and stories
that just go along with it.

(possums stomping)

- Shut the fuck up.
- My god, fucking possums.

- [Patrick] Fucking piece of shit house

in this piece of shit city.

I cannot wait to get out of here.

- Well, good thing we are,

'cause you are burning
our bridges in this town,

and I'm glad that we'll be an ocean away

know how it's gonna go.

us and famous actors

and politicians and whoever else,

but we'll be in sunny London,
so I do not give a shit.

Kind of over living in Adelaide.

So I figured, you know,
put this movie together,

use it as a bit of a, a show reel,

try and get some work in the UK.

The industry there's
just so much bigger,

it's a lot more opportunity
for someone like me.

- I just want a pint of Guinness
and some fish and chips.

- Wait, isn't Guinness Irish?

- They have it, it's still closer.

The closer to Dublin that
you get, the better the beer.

- I can't wait to go to New Zealand

and see some kangaroos. (laughing)

You just mixed them up completely.

- They have sheep in New Zealand.

They have Guinness in
the UK somewhere, yeah.

- Well, (chuckling) you
better not say that kinda shit

when we're, when we're there.

I don't think, you know,
the Irish and Scottish

like getting mixed up for the English.

- I would never ever mix them up.

(Patrick laughing)

Like, I just thought why not, fuck it.

I'm up for anything and
I can work anywhere,

so it's no issue to me.

So if it doesn't work out,
we can just come back.

- So we've given ourselves a year

for production on the movie
to get all that finished.

You know, do interviews, visit locations,

investigate things while we're in Adelaide

where everything happened.

In, in that time we can
get our visas sorted,

save up some money, get a plan together,

um, and get out of here.
(upbeat music)

So we've been making a real effort

to hang out with our friends before we go,

spend as much time as possible with them,

'cause who knows how
long we're gonna go for?

We might fall in love with the place,

and just don't come back.

And it's been good having them involved

'cause our budget is.

- [Patrick] Jesus, close

There’s a lot of fucking weirdos around.

We've been friends with
Sarah and Pat for years.

Those two are always up to
some kind of weird project,

like their band, or that time when Sarah

tried to do standup comedy.

So when they said they were making a movie

and moving overseas, we
really weren't that surprised.

Growing up in Adelaide, you
hear all kinds of things

about the Household.

Everyone has a story about it,

or knew somebody who knew
a victim, or has a theory,

or something that they
think really happened.

- Yeah, I remember that.

And I remember I thought they also had

like these weird rituals,

like rich people killing
parties and stuff like that.

I think I remember
(beep) were involved or something.

- Drink again.
- Yeah.

That'll make you feel better, mate.

- Damo has been my best
friend since primary school.

We've known each other for
years and years and years.

I love him to death, but
he's into some dodgy stuff,

which I won't go into detail
on camera for obvious reasons.

(engine revving)
- Good.

- But turns out he's
actually a pretty good actor,

who would've thought?

So, been doing some dramatic recreations

of some of the Household stuff,

what we think might have
happened where there's, you know,

when there's no photos
or videos available.

And yeah, he looks 15
years younger than he is.

So you just put him in the shadows,

he looks like a teenager, it works.

- I'm happy helping with whatever.

Acting, second camera,
anything else you need to do,

that camping thing in a few months.

Pat's always got cameras
around and he's always filming,

so we're all kinda used to it.

Info online about the case
is pretty hard to come by,

but there's like an AFL
football forum, of all things,

where there's actually quite a bit

of information posted
about random mysteries.

It's hardly peak journalism,

but a few leads came from there.

There's people on there
talking about the Household,

they've found this guy's YouTube video,

and he's talking about it.

And he's just, he's made
a YouTube video about it.

and so they say, people
go missing afterwards.

but it's hard to take serious.

He's just so melodramatic
and over the top.

You can see his eyes like
reading, reading a script.

He's almost got, like perfect
unintentional comedic timing.

- Some of you guys might remember

during my hundred subscriber party

that me and the Dan Pack,
we all took a shot for Jim.

Jim was my brother, and
he was murdered as a kid.

If you're from Adelaide,

you might've heard of
the Household murders.

Jim was the last victim.

(soft sombre music continues)

Even at six years old, I knew it was weird

the way the cops were
acting with my parents.

So a few months after
they found Jim's body,

this Max Lammasche guy was arrested.

But even before that, I remember the cops

were just really hammering in

that he was the one who
did it, it was only him,

even though he wasn't on
their radar at the time.

So anyway, there was this
one cop, Detective Dandy.

He seemed to be on our side,

and he just didn't buy the story either.

Now recently, I contacted that very cop.

I remembered his name, so
I looked him up on Facebook

and he told me some
very interesting things.

He didn't wanna give
away too many details,

or he couldn't, but he wanted me to know

that I wasn't crazy,
there's definitely more

than meets the eye with this case.

He almost seemed sorry

that he couldn't do more for my brother.

So this is my appeal to the
world for any more info.

We can solve this, guys.

Stick around for part
two, where we hear more

of what the detective had to tell me,

and we can hear what I
personally think happened.

- This guy's using
his own brother's murder

to shill his YouTube channel.

But in saying that, you know, he does feel

like a bit of a kindred spirit,

he's into making music and filming stuff.

The one thing I can confirm
that is legit in that video

is him talking about Detective Dandy.

That name pops up a lot, and
he seems to be the only cop

that's ever really made any
noise about what happened.

- I've been calling and
emailing Dandy for weeks.

If I had his address, I would
drop him off a letter myself.

That's how desperate we
are to talk to this guy.

- [Patrick] Dandy must
have felt sorry for him,

he talked to him, he won't talk to us.

- Yeah, we need to see if
he’ll talk to us, ASAP.

'Cause he was mentioning, you
know, getting disappeared.

But that's what I was worried about too,

and he said it as well.

- [Patrick] Yeah we joked
about that, I'm not worried.

He's just been playing it up for YouTube,

and you know, he's got
his dozens of followers

looking out for him. (laughing)

What has that got, like 17 views?

- No one else has gotten back to us yet,

so hopefully we can interview him.

Um yeah, I saw your Reddit post,

and I thought I had to reach out.

- I'm glad you did.

Just for some context,
so I made a Reddit post

about Household victim Collin
Bauman, 'cause you know,

I was looking, looking
online for some info,

and there, there wasn't
a whole lot about him,

but Jane here reached out to me,

'cause your, your grandpa
thinks he saw Collin

act-actually being taken.

So I'm, I'm really glad that
you, you got back to me.

- So Grandpa isn't with us anymore,

but I remember hearing
the story that he had told

about how he was working in Ottoway,

he was a council worker,

and he was meant to be
fixing some cricket nets.

And yeah so, and the story goes

that there was a group of kids

mucking around at the cricket nets,

and he obviously wanted to
get on with fixing the nets.

So knowing him, he probably, you know,

told them to F off, so he
could get on with his work.

Yeah, and fix the net.

- And so one of those kids,
your grandpa thinks was Collin.

- Yeah, that's right.

So after he'd had a word to them,

Grandpa heard the kids talking and,

and they were just saying,
"Oh, we may as well,

may as well go home."

And one went one way and the
other one headed off who,

who we think is probably
Collin, was probably Collin,

went the other way heading
towards Port Adelaide.

As Collin walked off, he had to cross

the Eastern Parade drains,
and Grandpa looked back.

And when he was on the
bridge, apparently he stopped

and he was talking to someone below.

Grandpa didn't think much of it,

but when he looked back the kid was gone.

And in that, in that time period,

there's not really anywhere
that he could have gone,

apart from into the drain.

- It was a lead, at least.

We went to the drain entrance
that Pat's informant,

for lack of a better word,

had told him about, and had a look.

It was full of water, but
Pat knew another entrance.

- I'd actually done a photo shoot

and skated at the drains

Jane was talking about a few years ago.

I knew that there was another entrance

just a few hundred metres away,
and they, they connected up.

So not all hope was lost, and
we could still get in there.

- It's fucked.
- What?

- [Sarah] That, that's heaps scary.

- So did your grandpa,
did he tell the police?

Did he report this?

- Yeah, so he did.

He, a few days later he saw
that Collin was missing on,

on the news, and he did contact the police

to try to make a statement,
and the police said,

they'd get back to him
to take his statement,

and they didn't get back to him.

And then he tried a few weeks later again,

and yeah they, same thing again.

They'll get back to him,
they never came back to him.

So yeah, so he just kind
of stopped bothering.

He figured the um, information
mustn't have been important.

- [Patrick] That's pretty spooky looking.

We've all heard the stories

about the mysterious Adelaide tunnels,

which apparently go to Parliament House,

and Port Adelaide, and the
army barracks up north.

So it's just kind of
interesting that, you know,

he might've disappeared into them.

- Um yeah, I haven't heard about that.

Um, do you think you'll
investigate the drains?

- Yeah, for sure. We'll,
we'll go check that out.

or Household members
getting us down there.

It was homeless people and
junkies and crack heads

and graffiti artists that worried me.

You know, if I was
hanging out in the drains

up to no good doing things
I didn't want people to see,

I'd do my best to scare off, you know,

a film crew coming around as well.

- [Sarah] That's weird.

- [Patrick] Did you leave your door open?

- No.
- Well,

I fucking locked it before I left.

- [Sarah] Yeah, I didn't leave it open.

Did you open it when you
put the skateboard in?

- No, I put the skateboard in the boot.

Fuck, the camera gear.

- [Sarah] Oh, everything
looks like it's there.

- [Patrick] Yeah, what the fuck?

What the fuck? These cords are fucked,

well, they've unplugged this.

- [Sarah] So someone's been in the car.

- [Patrick] Yeah, but why

When we got home I checked the dash cam,

and I didn't think
there'd be anything on it,

but there was this.

- [Patrick] Oh, I guess
the plane's a lot better

than the possum noises in the ceiling.

- So he's saying he's not
gonna do anything about it.

So like, I'm just gonna film it at night

when they're going crazy, so
you know, we've got evidence.

We can go to fair housing
SA or whoever we need to,

'cause you know I want our bond back.

We could use that money in the UK.

- Yeah, exactly.

and be woken up at 4:00 every morning.

So this is the real audio of Karl Roberts,

who was the sixth victim of the Household.

And in 2000 he escaped from somewhere,

wherever he was being held.

I don't exactly know where.

And he called the police from
a phone box in Rosewater.

But unfortunately he died of blood loss

before an ambulance and
the police could get there.

So we've got his last recorded moments.

- Right, so that's the thing

we did a recreation of with Damo for.

But an opportunity came
up for some remote work

installing aircons in a
whole block of apartments

in a place called Port Pirie.

It's good money, you know, we

But there's also a Port Pirie
connection with the Household.

So I stopped on the side of the road here,

on my way to Port Pirie,

because July 19th, 1993,

this is where third victim
Bradley Dawe was found.

His body was found by a retired couple,

and they were caravanning
around the country

and pulled over, just stopped
here on the side of the road,

So I've driven two and a half, three hours

north of Adelaide to Port Pirie,

and I managed to book the exact room

where Bradley Dawes was tortured,

and held for five days before his murder.

So, it's kind of eerie in here.

And so looking through the
old crime scene photos,

I managed to find out which motel it was.

This is really kinda creepy,

and it's not like I get
to just pack up and leave

And just to make things creepier,

I've waited till 2:00 in the morning,

just, you know, to get the right mindset.

And I don't know, that
just felt right to me.

It is believed Bradley was held captive

for five days in this very room,

tortured in horrific ways by Max Lammasche

or the Household,
depending on who you ask.

His limbs were amputated
in a surgical fashion,

almost as if done by a doctor.

The really horrifying thing
is, the coroners believe

that he was still alive for two days

after his arms and legs were
cut off, which is fucked.

What makes this even more
unusual, is there's no way

Max Lammasche could've
done those amputations.

The official story is he committed

all these murders himself,

I'm a documentary filmmaker
from Adelaide, Australia.

This place has been called
the City of Churches,

but locals know it by another name,

the Murder Capital of Australia.

I've always been fascinated
by Adelaide's dark secrets.

So now in 2004, we're going to
investigate over five decades

of this sleepy little city's
most infamous murders.

- My name is Mark Ackerman.

I worked for the Perth Police
Force in WA for 25 years.

After I retired, I studied criminology

and criminal justice at the
University of Northbridge,

and have been teaching as
a professor ever since.

I'm not one for flights of fancy,

but I will tell you what
has been established as fact

regarding secret societies.

So these type of clubs do
exist all over the world.

Most are harmless, just rich people

mingling amongst themselves
away from the public eye.

More sinister groups have
been documented, but are rare.

There was one of these organisations

disguised as a hunting club in France

that was disbanded in the 1930s.

A few members were
arrested, but many fled.

It was a lot easier to
disappear back then,

especially if you had money.

All of the members were from
the upper echelons of society.

Heads of industry, ministers.

We know one of the members was involved

in the writing of the
Treaty of Versailles.

This group passed themselves
off as a hunting club,

which technically they were,

but they weren't hunting foxes,
they were hunting people.

They stripped their victims naked,

gave them a five-minute head start,

pursued them on horseback with shotguns.

I've been a detective for
the Adelaide Police Force

since 1991, so about 13 years now.

I was one of the investigators

on the infamous Household murders.

I haven't figured out
exactly where all this began,

most likely in Europe,
but the nine murders

we know of aren't the first or the last.

I've managed to trace various
iterations of the Household

back to the early settlement days.

You might have heard
about the press gangs,

and the practise of
crimping in Port Adelaide.

In the early days of Australia,

sailors in pubs would be
drugged, they would then be taken

through elaborate tunnel
and drainage systems.

The lucky ones woke up at sea

and were told they could work or swim.

The unlucky ones were sold

to earlier iterations of the Household.

Some of these tunnels were later found

to go all the way into the CBD,

a major one ending at Parliament House.

- Now, this isn't my area of expertise,

but there can be an occult
element to their activities.

Organisations such as
the Veiled Serpent Society,

they worship an ancient pagan deity

called Taphaet, I believe it's pronounced.

But from what I recall, they
were interested in immortality

and by performing violent rituals,

and sacrifices to Taphaet,

they believed they would prolong life.

They would prey on
young men in particular,

as they were seen as strong and virile.

- I know there's been talk about
some kind of occult worship

and sacrificing boys
to Taphaet or whatever,

but that's not anything I
ever heard or saw firsthand.

It's nonsense, if you ask me.

- I'm sure not all of
them believe in the woohoo

and religious aspects but have grown up

around this type of thing,

and have realised they just like killing.

You'd have to find
someone that specialises

more in the occult to learn about Taphaet.

What I can tell you is,

these are old families and old money.

to mock old age, death, God.

They are missing the traditional robes,

and usually it is performed

in a more reverent place, not a shed.

It looks like the victim

has been conditioned with a whistle.

This is usually done with a
more ceremonial animal horn,

but it does feel like someone

who has at least some
knowledge of Taphaet,

but maybe is a bit uneducated about him.

Yeah, so Taphaet isn't a
pagan god, as many believe.

It's hard to say where
fact ends and myth begins,

but rituals were devised around
amputation and mutilation.

They believed by performing these acts,

they could cure sickness, heal wounds,

return hearing and eyesight, et cetera.

More secretive sects even thought

it was the key to immortality.

- They would perform amputations, torture,

sacrifices to Taphaet, inflicting pain

until the victim's eventual death.

This was done to appease Taphaet,

who they thought would
grant them longer life,

if not immortality.

They see dying as below them,
something for common people.

- [Alexandra] Could you
tell us how all of this

relates to the Household?

Is there a correlation with all of this?

- Your producer didn't
mention that this would be

a topic of discussion in this interview.

under false pretences,

In fact, some of the members

actively flaunted their involvement.

They kept him around for the various

SA properties he owned and let them use,

letting Karl Roberts escape,

they tied up that loose end.

These people filmed lots of their crimes.

I don't know why, so they could enjoy it

again and again maybe.

They've learned to be
smarter and quieter now.

and managed to get that

What they did get me for
was a bit of weed and coke.

getting eight months for that?

felt safer in prison.
