I don't feel relaxed.

- No, I wouldn't say settled, not in any sense of the word.

- I moved straight from my parents house

into the house that Jim and I bought.

So this is the first one that's really my own,

and I thought I'd get used to it, faster.

But it feels lonely, and final.

- Why final?

- Because everything I had,
everything that I loved is gone.

- Things change Diane, we adjust.

The more change, the longer it takes, you know.

- Yeah, but how long?

I didn't plan on starting
over at this point in my life

and there are days where I feel I won't make it.

- Really, why?

- Maybe I'm stuck between putting things

behind me and wondering what's ahead.

- Whatever you want is ahead.

- But I don't see it, not yet.

I'm just trying to settle into now.

- Okay, tell me about the house.

- Oh, it's lovely, I have everything I need.

It's small, smaller than I'm used to, but I like that.

And it doesn't have a lot of furniture,

just a couple of pieces left
from the previous owners.

- [Diane] I like the space.

- [Melanie] What about when you have friends over?

- I don't have friends over.

I don't want to.

- What did you decide to do with the unit in the back?

- Oh, I rented it to a very nice, young woman.

I should say doctor, Dr. Andrea Bell.

She's doing her residency in the ER.

- [Melanie] That sounds perfect.

- [Diane] Yeah.

- [Melanie] And the extra income's nice?

- [Diane] Yeah, but income's not really a factor.

- [Melanie] No?

- When Jim and I split our
assets I was left with plenty.

It just seemed silly not to rent it.

- Plus, you're not alone there.

You know, friends are important.

- She's not really a friend.

- No, but she could become one.

- She's young, and she's rarely there,

and when she is, she's quiet, the perfect tenant.

Oh, I made a couple of art appointments with Clara.

- Excellent, you know, I really
think you're gonna like her.

- Maybe I can paint it all out.

- You wanna talk about it, the divorce?

- [Diane] Everything is signed

and filed if that's what you mean.

- [Melanie] But it's not final in your heart?

- I have no delusions about me and Jim.

In fact, I kinda hate him now and that's probably good?

- And why is that good?

- Because, I can't love someone who wasn't there

for me when I really needed him.

I hadn't been there in 25 years.

- I don't want a relationship at all.

I'm not interested in men.

I admit it, I'm still bitter.

I blame Jim for Jamie's death.

- Yeah, well blaming Jim isn't helping you.

I know it sounds stupid.

I know it sounds unhealthy, but I do.

Jamie would have had a brilliant career.

I'll never understand why she had to try cases now.

She never would've joined JAG,

if she didn't have Jim's support.

- [Melanie] Diane, it was Jamie's decision.

- But she never thought she'd get deployed,

I never even heard of an
improvised explosive device before.

- The say she died instantly, but when I picture

that car blowing up, I can't stop thinking about,

- Well, it's our instinct to turn away from pain.

- But, but he turned away so soon, so quickly.

- Grief has its own time table, and it comes in waves.

Even when you think you might be over it,

suddenly you get hit with another big wave.

- My wave never receded.

- Well it will.

We've done a lot of work on this, this past year,

and you have to be patient with the process.

- How patient?

How many years?

- We never put grief behind us.

We learn to manage it.

- And you really think I'm gonna be able to do that?

Jim didn't.

He said, I cried too much, I was too depressed.

As if I could just get over it.

- It will get better.

- Those are just words.

My whole life blew up, Jamie was gone,

Jim was a mess, Marley got a brain tumor.

God, that sounds awful to mention

my dog's death in the same breath as my daughter's.

- Not to me.

- I crawled into a hole and I wanted to die.

But I dragged myself out, and when I did,

Jim should've been there waiting for me.

But he wasn't, he didn't wait.

- Actually, I see more of Michael, than I do

of her even though he lives in Seattle.

- You must miss him?

At least they have good
relationships with their fathers.

Have you thought about maybe getting another dog?

- Oh yeah of course, I miss Marley,

just I'm not home all day
long, and the responsibility,

and God, the thought of putting another dog to sleep.

months ago but won't leave.

She's sleeping in their bedroom, eating their food.

The Fishers are victims in their own home.

- You know, that really is a beautiful painting.

I'm just not a very good painter.

- Neither am I, but I enjoyed it,

You know, if you hadn't agreed to see me alone

after Jim and I stopped coming as a couple

I don't know what I would've done.

- Well, it worked out.

Is Jim in therapy somewhere, do you know?

- I don't know, I don't talk to him anymore.

I don't talk to anyone.

- Yeah, you said you never had friends over,

but you didn't even talk to them?

- Truthfully, after the divorce
some of them disappeared

and the other ones do
everything with their husbands.

I hate being the third wheel.

- What about coworkers?

- I'm not close with any of them.

They like to talk about each other, I'm not into that.

- Okay, well let's talk about you.

- My whole life, I've always
taken care of everyone else.

I'm a giver.

I feel entitled to take for a little while.

- Take what?

- Take time, take a break, take advantage.

You know that Jim used to call me Mother Teresa.

Like, it turned him off that I wasn't aggressive.

- What, do you mean sexually?

- Well that too.

Our sex was great.

I did find it difficult to put myself first in bed.

I enjoyed pleasing him.

- And did he please you?

- Yeah, our sex was routine.

But, that's normal in a long marriage

and I loved our routine.

- Do you miss it, sex?

- No, not yet.

- How bout you let someone take

you out for a little fun, sometime?

- Jim's dating.

He's already in a full-blown relationship.

- And how does that make you feel?

- It doesn't make me feel anything.

He's the first man I slept with,

the only man I ever slept with,

and I'm the one he married,
the others were just flings.

Every man has to do that, right?

Get it out of his system.

- So we're told.

- I loved our marriage.

I thought we had a great one, but when I look back now

I see that Jim, what he loved,

was having me under his thumb.

And that makes me hate him.

- Hating him isn't gonna help you in the long run,

of course, but if it's a stage that you

think you need to go through,
you wouldn't be the first.

- I see her in court, the
girlfriend, prosecutor Mia Lew.

She's good, she's really good.

She might even be a better prosecutor than Jim.

- You say that with some glee.

- Oh come on, you know Jim.

He thinks he's smarter than everyone.

It'll never last, she's a tiger.

- [Melanie] How so?

- She's aggressive, Jim won't know what to do with that.

- Does it upset you that Jim is with

a woman who's so different from you?

- I'm not that different, I have other sides.

- She said defensively.

Other sides you wanna talk about?

- I just hate thinking about her in my old house.

I mean, is she using my shower?

Is she on my toilet?

I mean, does she have clothes hanging in my closet?

- It bothers you.

- Yeah, it does, I hate tigers.

Jim talked about in couples therapy

on a day that Diane didn't show up.

- Diane still doesn't know about it?

- [Melanie] No, uh-uh.

- Did you advise Jim to tell her?

- Yeah, but here's the thing,

Jamie had run up a pretty sizable debt,

and when Jim bailed her out, they made a deal.

He wouldn't tell her mother as
long as she would seek help,

and that's when she joined JAG.

- Remind me what that is.

- The Judge Advocate Generals Corps.

- Oh, yes, yes, and then she was deployed, horrible.

- You know, I think it could help Diane to know

that Jim encouraged Jamie for a reason.

- Why?

How would that help?

- Help her see that he did it for Jamie's benefit

and not just to stoke his own ego.

- My dear, her daughter is dead.

Do you really think knowing any of that would help?

- [Melanie] Maybe, I don't know.

- Is this about Diane or you?

- You know, I thought that one
of the most important things

that we do as therapists is to encourage

our patients to share their secrets,

and here I am keeping secrets
from her about her family.

It doesn't seem right.

- Our job is to help our patients

navigate through their life problems.

You do that very well, stay the course.

Jim was your patient at one time too

and you can't betray his
confidence, unless you have to.

If you ask me, I'm advising
you not to share this secret.

- Yeah, you're right, I know you're right.

Just, you know, I'm not at ease with it.

- It's okay, Diane is in good hands with you.

People don't realize how emotional horses can be.

But she missed him.

She wasn't even excited to go riding anymore.

She just thought about him.

- We both did.

She was missing her baby and I knew it.

- I'm sure you're right.

I know my dog had emotions.

- Your dog's gone?

- Yeah.

- You must be lonely.

I mean it's not expensive, it's just

a small deposit on our credit cards.

I can buy the tickets.

- I don't think I'd like a cruise, all that rocking.

up the coast for the weekend?

I know this amazing place in Montecito.

It's right about the beach, by the country club...

- The spa?

- No it's a house and it is beautiful.

It's on several acres.

It's my cousin's but she goes out of town a lot.

So, I could easily get the place for the weekend.

- I don't know, Haven.

- It's just one weekend.

You'll love it, it's beautiful.

- This isn't really where I saw us going.

- Well me either, but it feels good.
